Would be great to add some comments about battery life, both for the "video playback" case that seems to have become the standard as well as for running some workload. I tend to use laptops as laptops, not just mobile desktops, so knowing how much time and how much performance I can get when not tethered to the wall is always useful =)

@Sony Alpha Adventure honestly, having to read/write text for 10+ hours a day is made *much better* having a crisp, nice 4k display. I'm a minimalist in many ways when it comes to my setup, but 4k screens are second only to the jump from HD to SSD in the quality-of-life improvement in a laptop.

Welcome to the mixed resolutions nightmare, buddy! I have a main 4K monitor and two extra 1080p ones. I'm one of those crazy people who likes 100% scaling on 4K, even on my 32''display. A nice tip is using the large text option in GNOME's accessibility settings, that is the sweet spot for me, without changing scaling at all. And as far as the 1080p monitors go, the scale won't match but you get used to it very quickly

I'd love to have a nice aluminum shell, unfortunately the manufacturing isn't quite there yet to make that cheaply. Most will take a solid block and mill it, which is hyper expensive. A piece of sheet metal stamped into shape would be far easier and cheaper, but you'd have tiny little lips here and there that couldn't exist and allow for extra mount points and whatnot. So it's kind of a tradeoff unless they use steel, which has all sorts of problems too, but it would make welding easier so it could be more than just a stamping. Not that they can't weld aluminum, just that steel is easier.

how good is the cooling though... what temps is the CPU and GPU hitting when pushing it to the max? Some gaming laptops can do that like 80C, while others with same specs have worse cooling and hit like 100C and start throttling. Thats more what I would want to know if I got one for gaming.

I understand you like your new M1 and apple did get many things right with it, but that shouldn't excuse their anti-consumer behavior or any things that they got wrong with it, because that's what they want - people to just accept anything they do as okay. It's not okay, and you shouldn't be okay with this. Those are your options that are being limited by a tech giant. By saying that's okay you're screwing over all the people for whom that's not okay. @@bloodraven2537 Hey dude, you’re entitled to your viewpoint on upgradable parts. Maybe you shouldn’t support any smartphone manufacturer, because they won’t let you upgrade memory or storage.
For me it’s a tool that I use to do my work and Macs are solid and reliable tools. I’m not going to subject myself to a crappy user experience to make some sort of point that nobody will hear.
If you want to upgrade your machine, then buy an upgradable machine, but trying to get others to fall inline with your view is like trying to convert people to your religion.
I don’t care about Apple. If a company like System76 built machines that functioned better, I’d happily buy the better machine. I have zero loyalty to Apple, but right now they have the best machines for me.

@@nitesh-maharaj I am not trying to get you to buy upgradable things. It's okay to buy and like Apple products. There is a lot to like about them. But there are also issues like upgradability. And you CAN do things about it - write Apple a lovely email with your thoughts on their stance on repairability and upgradability or go support the right to repair movement. Be vocal about these issues on social media. That is way better than just not buying their products.
About smartphones, it's sadly already the norm to have parts not be upgradable or even easily replacable, but also the argument could be made that they solder things and make the phone un-openable to save space and make the phone slimmer. The same can't be said about Apple that literally makes their devices not works with 3rd party standard parts like SSDs and require hacky workarounds. That's what you shouldn't be okay with, because it's deducting from the overall quality and ease of use of the product.
I'm not trying to be a linux zealot here. I'm just trying to make a point that the less vocal people are about tech giants trying to limit their choices and control over the devices they buy and own, the more the companies are going to do it, because people are okay with it. That's why you shouldn't be okay with it.

If I was going to be using Windows, sure, RTX 40 series all the way.
I do not want to deal with the headache that is NVIDIA/Linux driver compatibility.
I already deal with enough weird issues dual booting my desktop and just want something that works.
Thing is, I’m not even an AMD guy. Every computer I’ve ever owned or built has had Intel and NVIDIA hardware.
Still, for Linux and open source, AMD wins everyday. And when I finally go to spend money on AMD, their offerings are meager. Between Purism and System76, there’s like 3 to choose from that don’t have 40 series cards and all come with iGPU. And underwhelming parts for things like screens.

Yeah nvidia is just still trash with wayland. With my AMD GPU I feel like I run into a lot less issues with wayland but on my nvidia desktop its just a horrible expirience. Xorg just feels outdated, I mostly notice that on laptops with like multigesture touchpads, multiple monitors, touchscreen and so on.

Is 4K really necessary? IMO, no. 1440p is more than good enough for a 15" screen, beyond which you're just actively killing the battery, which is stupid to me. I hope Linux does DPI scaling better soon.

4k on anything less than 17” is pointless. 2k 120Hz is the sweet spot.
