@@polygoncoco Flipping the case 180 degrees and changing the mounting screw positions for the movement (maybe also changing the threading for the crown) It's a no-brainer. Maybe it's just because demand is low for the configuration? Who knows, things might change now because Rolex has dabbled with the tech ;)

While they are neat there not as nice as a caseback crown or a 12/6. Those styles are hard to beat when the watch is the right size for your wrist.

I can remember when I first started wearing a watch that I instinctively wore it on my right wrist as it was and is my dominant hand. It just felt right, that is, until my parents told me that it was commonplace to wear a watch on your non-dominate wrist. They said it was less likely to get damaged. I just accepted their reasoning without any further consideration until now. You have inspired me to experiment and see which I prefer! Thanks for another excellent topic and video.

Ah, this means a lot Alvin! As a youngster I didn't know right from left. In old photos the watches are on any wrist depending on the day BUT the right wrist eventually felt "natural" I guess. It's all down to you though man, if you've spent years getting comfortable with a watch on the left side, stick to it ;)

Omg ! Finally somebody talking about this..thank you ! This has become one of the biggest issues for me personally as a large crown in the traditional position can be a deal breaker on what otherwise would be a perfect watch. It almost always means that a bracelet needs to be swapped out for a strap so that the extra weight doesn’t pull the watch down further into the hand. More LHD watches please👍👍👍

    • @ID-Guy

It's a funny thing because wearing watches on the right wrist, the crown is one of the first things you see (and we seem to pay more attention to them) I feel for everyone who can't get a chance to see them on the wrist. More LHD pieces for sure man. All brands should be experimenting!

I'm right-handed, but if I ever got a Pelagos, I'd totally go with the LHD. It just looks amazingly badass. Me having to do an IDGuy impression by setting and winding the watch upside down would be a small price to pay for how cool it'd look on my wrist. Also, as someone with relatively large hands, the one thing I can't tolerate in a watch is a small/undersized crown, which I find nearly impossible to manipulate. I'll take the "crown dig" into my hand of a larger crown all day.. Great video!

After getting a promotion at work and spending years wanting a nice watch, I finally ordered one. Went with a Laco Flieger Pro and chose to order a left-hand version. I'm a right-handed guy and plan to wear the watch on the left wrist, so why did I order the destro? Well, partly because the configuration is rare and the hipster in me wanted something unique.
All of the reasons you raised in this video played a part in the functional considerations I gave to a left-handed model. I particularly worried about the crown digging into my hand and the potential for the crown getting caught on things. Watching this video deepened my theoretical conviction towards the left-handed Flieger Pro, and I hope that my wearing of the watch continues to further that position!

Good afternoon ID Guy, I had to smile listening to your video on the Oris left hand crown. I am a lefty like you and all the reasons you gave for wearing your watch on your right hand reconcile completely with my logic. I have always worn my watches on my right hand, for all the reasons you gave and would not buy a left hand crown watch. One additional reason why I wear my watches on my right arm, (you might have eluded to this), is because this is the arm I use the least and therefore the potential for damage is minimised. So, for me, the pros of having the crown in the conventional position far out way the cons. Another great video.

I agree with your comment near the end: I am mostly (not entirely left-dominant and wear RHD watches on the "wrong" wrist (right wrist). I'm having trouble imagining wearing a LHD watch on my right wrist with the crown facing toward my hand (instead of my elbow). The LHD watches could be fun just to see if people notice and do a double-take, but I really don't think I want to wear one.

Absolutely spot on, and that’s from a RH person. Crowns have been the reason for me to sell SO MANY watches over the years as a collector. And that’s the issue here; collecting. With a one watch auto collection, there is no winding to be done, however if you’re an idiot like me and have too many watches, you end up having to wind/set them every time you change piece…effectively putting you in the manual wind category! The price is crown callus!
That said, one day when I’m a one-watch-collection guy, it’ll be LHD for sure. One day. 😕

Thanks for the video! I love the tiny crown of the GMT 1675. I’m left handed but don’t mind winding or setting time with my right hand. One other point on the crown….I’ve never set time on a watch while on my wrist, I always when it’s off. I would purchase a left hand watch but would always wear it on the left wrist, because I’m used to it by now. The greatest advantage for me would be to have the crown inside the wrist.

  • @friskjidjidoglu7415

I feel that there were a some points and counterpoints you missed.
A big one was that you skipped over the first wristwatches, which often had the top crown at the top.
The comfort of the wristwatch and the difficulty to set the watch are all dependent on one’s handedness. I want to try a left-handed watch, but only as a novelty. In a profesional context you can’t be bothering with toys. If i wanted a watch to wear seriously, I’d stick to only my right-handed watches (bc i am a right-hander). Another factor that’s important for dive watches is the rotating bezel. The crown guards, too, are still important for these reasons.
The reason crown-right is the norm is because right-handedness is the norm. Pretty simple
And I think a dishonorable mention is the nominally left-handed version of the Tag Heuer Monaco lol.

I'm left handed but I've always worn my watch on my left arm. I think I've always felt more comfortable with it on that arm, similar to throwing a ball, or eating, or writing, I'd use that arm. It makes sense to use a tool in that hand, so I think it's always felt comfortable having my watch on that hand.
That being said, it's never made that much sense to me that the crown should be worn facing your hand since it digs in. (Other than being able to wind it or set the time while wearing it, which I don't do anyway.)

Another extremely specific disadvantage of wearing a watch on your right wrist is when a watch has multiple functions that are actuated with the crown. Even on a hand-winding watch it's not an issue, as it's good practise to operate your crowns whilst not wearing the watch (or so I've heard) to keep the stem straight.

I don't find the crown digging into my wrist to be uncomfortable or even irritating. Maybe it's because that only happens when I'm wearing heavy tool watches that have greater wrist presence. I can definitely understand the concern with crown guards though- I've heard that some cheaper watches have sharp crown guard.
As for the crown getting caught, it still happens with standard crowns. One of my watches even catches and pulls on my hair when I run my hand through it. Actually, this could be one of the occasions where a LHD crown would be an improvement.

Surprising, i would think a LHD would directly get a big plus from a lefty. I like the crown at the 3 o’clock position as a right handed person. The watches that i had where the crown dug into my wrist where sold quite quick.
As a right handed person I don’t see my self directly purchasing e.g. the Rolex GMT Destro. It would annoy me too much that the date isn’t at 3, or at least the right side of the watch. The Sinn watches do this better in my opinion.

"Don't read into any of that" 🤣
I'm a peculiar breed of lefty because I didn't know I was, as my parents made me use my right hand, even though using my left felt more instinctual. Then when I went to school I felt like the odd one out, as everyone else wrote with their right hand so I copied them to fit in. Consequently I'm now a weird hybrid (which is called cross-dominance). I used to wear my watch on my right hand but it got in the way of writing, so I switched to the left. Now it just feels weird if I try it on my right wrist. You should try manipulating your crown (don't read into that) with your right hand, as you will learn to become accustomed to it over time and it will negate you having to set the time and wind upside down.

Not left-handed, 'wrong-handed' as my old chainsaw instructor used to say! Big crowns can definitely be painful - especially if you run your strap/bracelet a bit loose. Batten her down! While I've got an EZM in classic GSG9 LH crown configuration and it is comfy on a motorcycle, it's a serious snag hazard. I've worked around ropes and nets a lot and a LH crown is a short step away from de-sleeving your hand, going overboard, being pulled into a winch or stuck in a net. Not so clever. And for the desk divers, it's death to a shirt or suit!

The Pelagos LHD, that is probably one of the few I’d consider for myself. I’m warming up the Sinn’s aesthetic. The Sinn highlighted in this video, that clicks with me where it wouldn’t have a month ago along with most other Sinn’s. Tasted is nothing subjective and something that evolves or devolves.
