I am new to watch collecting and purchased my 556 A RS last year from Watch-Buys which I believe is the only authorized US authorized dealer. I paid about $1700 for mine new. Just like my 10 year old 4Runner, the watch is reliable, functional and a classic. It’s all you need. For now…
I might be in the minority, but this dial design appeals to my tastes. Like the Explorer 1 and the Smith's, the splash of red on the second hand brings this all together. Thanks for the great content.
10 months ago, I almost bought a 556A RS after watching your video. However, the golden rotor that I really loved was replaced for a silver one. Plus the fact that the price in Canada is way higher than in Europe, I did not want it at the end. 5 days ago, I bought a second hand 556A and really... WHAT A WATCH.
I absolutely LOVE my Sinn 556 A RS. Purchased this recently and it's so much better on the wrist. It's been months and honeymoon period has not worn off.
Great video as always. Love the 556 and little known fact is that the Sinn’s cases are manufactured by its subsidiary SUG, and it doesn’t take a whole lot of research to discover who else SUG manufacture exceptional cases of high quality for, meaning the humble 556 has some very fancy cousins!
I fully agree with your assessment. My 556 A has by far the best legibility of all my watches. I have the 556 mother of pearl and love it. It has extra subtle flair the others dont. The dial is much better in person than pictures, and is different from every angle. Surprisingly the halfway point of rugged and dressy works well for it. It also runs +1s/day or less to boot. Oddly mine came with a silver rotor, only thing i can complain about
I grabbed mine (finally) in December for around the same price. I had been waiting for a 556A RS on the fine link bracelet to pop up and when it did I grabbed it. I cannot take this watch off. I go to grab it every day.
It’s very hard to find a better watch with these specs, on a bracelet, with such a versatile, yet brand-specific design in this price segment. The 556i has been my primary do-it-all, most-worn watch for about 3 years now. Picked it up for $1k and have yet to find another watch that has given me such bang for the buck.
Excellent review. It’s amazing how a splash of red can make all the difference. This is a perfect alternative for the Explorer imo. I personally don’t mind the small date window. I can forgive Hans 😎
I think you went a little low on the movement. Yes, a normal Sellita isn’t anything special, but the Sellita used in the Sinn is a “top grade” movement just one step away from being COSC certified. And it’s decorated a bit nicer than an average Sellita. On top of all of that, Sinn manually regulates each one. It’s a solid 8/10 movement for me.
Great review. Just bought the very same 556 a rs. It's a very cool looking tool watch. Minimalist in its own way but the red second hand definitely draws the eye.
Gorgeous little watch, but for some reason the dial feels unbalanced to me. Just a little bit of writing above the 6 would've made it better for me. Especially with some red text.
I went for the 556ib A beautiful Sunday blue dial, much nicer finishing so it dresses up well on a strap but the multi link bracelet is also fantastic. A better proposition than all the other 556 variants. For me.
Nice review, enjoy your new watch! I am a happy 556A owner. Wearing it right now. It's my favourite watch. I bought it new around 4 years ago for £720 on leather! Those were the days. Since then I bought the fine link bracelet directly from Sinn in Germany (personal taste but I prefer the fine link for pilot's watches) and wear this watch on bracelet everyday. I also own the Alpinist (SARB017) which I love. As the old saying goes, why pay more?
It's hard to spend more then what I did for my Sinn on anything else, they're an incredible value. Their EZM and U series lines are the last true tool watches being made across any brand - impressive specs, matte finishes, excellent legibility.
It is my most worn watch of 2022. For a good reason. It is a quality companion, like would be a slowly ageing dog. Some could find him boring, but It will never let you down.
I dig it. I thought it was a Bell & Ross in the thumbnail - which I love but can’t rationalize buying - and fits my collection perfectly as a next tier Pilot / Field.
I love Sinn. They are just original, quality, and no nonsense. They make tool watches - not pretend tool watches that are actually really just luxury trinkets (looking at you Omega / Rolex / Tudor etc). Rewind 40-50-60 years to the hayday of tool watches and those Swiss brands where killing it and the price was more akin to what Sinn go for in todays market (inflation adjusted). If you are after a proper tool watch to use as an actual tool you don’t buy an explorer, black bay, seamaster, super ocean, SEAQ etc (you buy those to have a luxury expensive timepiece with tool capabilities - there is a major difference). Instead you buy a Sinn - a Damasko - a citizen even. Great video
I own the 556irs on a fine link and a 556ib on h-link. Love the irs especially. Simple, solid, clean. Got them both used but mint for around 900euro's a piece. I live in the Netherlands.
I like this watch a lot, superb legibility at a glance. Without trying to offend any person by name, I am not a fan of the person who decided to have the date complication but I am a fan of the person(s) who implemented it very small with white on black as does 'hide' well enough not to be too distracting and certainly it would not put me off. I have to agree that the red on the seconds hand really does make the dial pop more. If I were considering this watch I think I'd prefer it on a decent leather strap that I think would possibly add to the great tool like design.
@7:23 "Tegiment" is a Sinn marketing word (latin for shell/armour). The actual technology is from Bodycote, a UK company, and known as S3P (Specialty Stainless Steel Processes) which itself is based on the kolsterising process invented by Dutch professor Bel Kolster in the 1980s.
I hesitated between the 556 models for a while, and since I have already a flieger-explorer like with the Tudor North Flag, so I picked the 556 mother of pearl, great watch, great size, elegant daily and much more refined than my Seiko and much less obvious than my luxury pieces. One issue I have with the RS from day one is with the 3rd hand, I wished it was thinner and longer, the tip ending closer to the inner case. All in all, the 556 would deserve more attention, Sinn is truly a great brand and, since I'm going regularly to their factory showroom in Frankfurt, they are truly nice people as well.
I love the sword hands, they look like hands in a pilot cockpit gauge. The red seconds hands is cool too..looks like the needle in a tachometer of a sports car :D
Have the 556i RS. Got it, because the one with the white seconds hand was sold out. I was not sure if i liked it at the beginning, because I found that stark minimalistic monochrome look very cool. However, now I agree with you on the red pop of colour - it really adds some interest. It is now, I think, my favourite everyday watch. The bracelet feels very substantial, and with it the watch feels very solid and pleasantly heavy, and sits perfect on my wrist. I don't know, somehow this weight in a pretty small watch feels like it has more value. Also, about the satin case and bracelet - it is very well done and fits the style and purpose of the watch. I feel like some polishing would an an unnecessary bling, and it would be less impactful design. So, I feel like Sinn did everything right with this one (and the dat window on the i model is at 3 o'clock, btw, so no issues there as well). Thanks for the great review!
@@WatchCrunchOfficial haha! Sort of! I grew up in Toronto! But I went to university in Vancouver! The west completely stole my heart, swore I’d never live anywhere else! Until a certain Englishmen stole my heart! 😜✨ we still always say one day we will move back out west. Maybe Squamish?!
And interestingly, there are more Sinn dealers in Canada than the US: Roldorf (Vancouver), J. VAir Anderson (Calgary) and Classic Creations (Toronto), versus only WatchBuys for the entire US. And for a fun Sinn rabbit hole, check out the story of the Sinn 903 and how it helped rescue Breitling from near bankruptcy.
I have the 556iRS. Love the looks of the H-Link bracelet and the ease of adjusting links. Would have wanted half links for finer adjustments AND no divers extension or that skydivers extension OR whatever extension you would call it. It makes the bracelet heavy and somehow it gets in the way of the microadjustment hole.
I have this one but with the white seconds hand. To me the red hand actually takes away from the visual style. But that's subjective. Anyways, i love the watch and it only gets better looking after a little wear and tear. If it was a thermally compensated high accuracy quartz watch, I would say it would be as close to perfect as a watch could be. (Also a highly subjective opinion, I'm aware..) Great video!
I believe in this case RS is rot sekunde, same for the A and I, it is just a case that the german words have the same first letter than the english ones.
A 556A has been my daily watch for 10 years no regrets, only watch people know what it is. I travel in Asia no risk of being mugged and no “valuing” in meetings. Isn’t that a box to tick a full tool watch that just does it’s job without fuss? Ja buy za SINN!!!
I have a few different seiko’s and other watches and after getting my 556i (originally dreamed of the 556ars), I only rotate between the Sinn and my Casio world timer. Quite possibly the best 2 watch collection around $1000
Hi Max. I love the style of this watch, out of budget for me at the moment. A Seiko Sarg011 will do for now. For half the price, provided you find one.😅😁
Very cool watch without a doubt. But for an alternative pilot watch, I'd advise folks to take a look at the Damasko DK-30 which is also German but contains a genuine in-house movement, and is made of ice-hardened steel (unlike the 556; Sinn doesn't offer regimented steel on this model). Oh, and it's also slimmer and less expensive. Not sure why we're talking about $1000-ish since the Sinn on a bracelet goes for at least $1,500.
The DK-30 is ~$1342 at the two US sellers. To my knowledge, and after looking at their offerings, neither sell it with the bracelet. You can buy the bracelet directly from Damasko, who charges €770.00, which works out to $833.00 before shipping and duties. The Sinn 556 with an H-Link bracelet is $1530 with the comparable Damasko bracelet is at least 42% more expensive. Personally, if I was buying the Damasko, I'd go with the DS30 and save ~$350 as I'd rather have the ETA movement rather than an in-house clone of the 2824 from a relatively new movement manufacturer. "In-house" doesn't mean better. "Submarine Steel" maybe good marketing, but not sure if it's a true benefit in normal real world use.
Great review of a watch that’s one of my all time favorites! I have to disagree though with the date window feeling like an afterthought. I think this is purposely the most unobtrusive date window of any watch. It can’t be accused of throwing off the balance of the design like many other watches do. (Date windows will always be a debate for enthusiasts) Also note that Sinn has modified the date wheel so that the numbers display “straight” instead of at an angle like many 4:30 date windows do.
How is the crown action? I own a 104 and the crown doesn’t pop out after unscrewing. I sent it to the recommended repair folks and it is only marginally better…
I love Sinn's design so much I'm trying to find some good Sinn style hands for a (Myiota 8315) watch that is an homage of something else, but has stong Sinn design style
Hey Max. Thanks for the great review. Owning a 556 makes me question other watches in my collection haha. Why did you pick the 556a RS instead of 556i RS? The 556a RS is great too, but I want to know why you opted for that. Thanks!
I have the 556RS, slightly small for my wrist but still wearable, when I bought it, I picked the red second dial for the same reason as you. Bought it.a few years ago at the US AD and paid there abouts $1100 with sales tax. Only bitch is the small date, to the point I may not set it if in a rush.
I had the 556A and it’s a hard watch to beat, I currently have an Explorer 1 36mm but it’s disappointing, the Sinn wears better, has crown guards, all brushed finish & is a sixth of the cost. I like the date display, you don’t really notice it till you need it. The clasp could be better as could the lume & Id happily pay more for these 2 things to be improved. There’s a gap that needs filling between a Sinn and a Rolex, Tudor nearly do that but at 3 times the price.
It is a nice looking watch , Seiko and many watch companies have a similar looking watch. The price is high for what you get. It is a simple watch but the price is not.
Not sure of your opinion on Islander watches, but they have a nice, similar looking watch for about $260 USD that is a great bargain - the ISL-54. Though it's a NH-35 movement in that one.
This is on my next wishlist, and here's the great reviews, awesome videos again! Btw, may I know your opinions abt Seiko SPB317J1, is it worth it as a add in collection for a dive watch?
I didn't like the markers of the 556i and monochromatic look of 556a, but Sinn fixed it. I really want to like this watch, but another watch brand won't let me. And that watch brand is Nomos...
I'll be disappointed if the next House Hunters I encounter on TV doesn't start with: "Hi. I'm Grayson, and I work at Ikea for Hamsters." "I'm MacKenzie, and I research the effects of jazz fusion on the sex drive of wasps." "And we have a modest budget of $34 Million."
To me the Sinn 556RS is a good alternative to the Tudor Ranger. I would choose the 556RS over the Ranger. Imo. I tried on the Ranger… uninspiring at the price they are charging.
I actually dig a lot of details for this watch. But I just don’t like those hands. Which is ironic as I love the aesthetic of it being inspired by instrument cluster dials. But, I’m failing to see the price point value on this. Aside from the name and the movement, it feels very much like an $800 watch. Entry level. If anything it really feels like a brand that designed an entry level watch, had it blow up in sales and then kept raising the prices to a point where it fails to meet value anymore. And while your version is nice, at the used price point you paid, it’s also super scuffed at that clasp. But it’s a tool watch and maybe that gives it some charm (I actually kind of dig a little “wear” and patina on my watches when it comes along naturally).

"In-house" doesn't mean better. "Submarine Steel" maybe good marketing, but not sure if it's a true benefit in normal real world use.
Nice video. Also I think RS stands for red seconds.
Looks much nicer than the comparable Tudor Ranger and wayyyyy cheaper.
Own the original since 2011. Never left my system. 556A to be exact.
Great review of a watch that’s one of my all time favorites!
I have to disagree though with the date window feeling like an afterthought.
I think this is purposely the most unobtrusive date window of any watch. It can’t be accused of throwing off the balance of the design like many other watches do. (Date windows will always be a debate for enthusiasts)
Also note that Sinn has modified the date wheel so that the numbers display “straight” instead of at an angle like many 4:30 date windows do.
I don't mind the date, but I wish they'd radially oriented it instead of making it vertical 🤔
My favourite watch and think you got it's score pretty spot on Max.
How is the crown action? I own a 104 and the crown doesn’t pop out after unscrewing. I sent it to the recommended repair folks and it is only marginally better…
I love how they twisted RS into Red Seconds
I love Sinn's design so much I'm trying to find some good Sinn style hands for a (Myiota 8315) watch that is an homage of something else, but has stong Sinn design style
Sounds like a fun build
very helpful list you produced at the end 🙂
I’ve owned the Sinn 856 for a long time and LOVE it. Such a great and robust watch
Leveled up 👍
Hey Max. Thanks for the great review. Owning a 556 makes me question other watches in my collection haha. Why did you pick the 556a RS instead of 556i RS? The 556a RS is great too, but I want to know why you opted for that. Thanks!
I like the big Arabic numerals to break up the monotony
I have the 556RS, slightly small for my wrist but still wearable, when I bought it, I picked the red second dial for the same reason as you. Bought it.a few years ago at the US AD and paid there abouts $1100 with sales tax. Only bitch is the small date, to the point I may not set it if in a rush.
We have the same taste 👍
I can think of my Christopher Ward C65 Sandhurst bespoke edition (Royal Marines Commando)
Just picked up the Sandhurst series 1. Lovely watch.
Other than the Arabic numerals, do you think the Damasko DS/DK 32 gives it a run for its money?
Yes i like both.
I chose the DS30 over the 556i, both great every day watches, I don't regret my choice.
I've always liked the 556. Not sure why I don't own one.
Would love to see you talk about the EZM 3 next!
It's a great looking watch but since owning a CW I can't go back to having no otf adjustment. I just wish my Dartmouth had a display caseback.
It is a nice looking watch , Seiko and many watch companies have a similar looking watch.
The price is high for what you get. It is a simple watch but the price is not.
Like the video. There’s a fiber by the center wheel pivot 5:45
I saw that!
Not sure of your opinion on Islander watches, but they have a nice, similar looking watch for about $260 USD that is a great bargain - the ISL-54. Though it's a NH-35 movement in that one.
Seems idyllic in form and function . The crown action I feel is perfect . Very nice .
Hey Max, Where do you post your review list with scores? love to see the whole list
I like the color matched date wheel, but too small. That 556 needs the white on the hour hand to be orange or yellow.
Ohh i was thinking of buying this watch and you dropped a review. I think the universe is telling me something!
Oris is better!
You won't regret it 😉
I'm sure many watch enthusiasts in Toronto would love to meet you too!
I gotta drop by soon!
@@WatchCrunchOfficial Nice!
This is on my next wishlist, and here's the great reviews, awesome videos again!
Btw, may I know your opinions abt Seiko SPB317J1, is it worth it as a add in collection for a dive watch?
I think the red second hand defeats the utilitarian charm of the 556a. Would rather have the white.
I normally hate 4:30 date windows, but in this model I even like it
It's a Skydivers extension 😅 for when the Pilot needs to bailout
This or the Tudor Ranger? I cannot decide
Any chance you’re thinking of letting that Porsche Design go? 😬😬❤️❤️
Even though the numerals are big and functional on the A model, they aren't that balanced and I would go for the I version
I didn't like the markers of the 556i and monochromatic look of 556a, but Sinn fixed it. I really want to like this watch, but another watch brand won't let me. And that watch brand is Nomos...
I love this watch. In the US the retail is 1100? In Japan where I am they sell it for 2200😅
Oh geez 😮
Great review - thanks👍🏻
I'll be disappointed if the next House Hunters I encounter on TV doesn't start with:
"Hi. I'm Grayson, and I work at Ikea for Hamsters."
"I'm MacKenzie, and I research the effects of jazz fusion on the sex drive of wasps."
"And we have a modest budget of $34 Million."
LOL I love it Nolan 🤣
Looks great, but I think that the Orient Outdoor has a better value.
I remember this caliber is top grade, so 5 positions not 2
To me the Sinn 556RS is a good alternative to the Tudor Ranger. I would choose the 556RS over the Ranger. Imo. I tried on the Ranger… uninspiring at the price they are charging.
Can we all please give Hans a round of applause for insisting on date!? 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Great video. Its a beautiful watch!
Got one for my bday in the finelink bracelet. Love the finelink ! Check that out too.
This Sinn has a top grade SW200, regulated for five positions.
it's not really that difficult to add or subtract links......i really like that design feature
