Cheers Ken! You are not imagining anything, things in the village are so much more relaxed than the towns/cities - which says a lot given how relaxed the whole country is! Everyone was so welcoming and trusting as well to have this strange 'barrang' wander in with a camera too!

Hey mate! Yeah this was a fun little detour on our big day out in Battambang.
We went away last weekend and after seeing peoples behaviour - can absolutely see why we are back in lock down, people not really taking precautions on top of VicGovs own 'ruby princess' moment with the security guard stuff up. I am ok to stay locked down for as long as it takes if we can eliminate the spread - the quicker we do that the quicker we can travel again! Really spewing we didn't get back to SR even for a mini break now..
Hope Andy goes ok in Greece, id be a bit iffy going anywhere in Europe..
Looking forward to see how you go with the Osmo - they look like a really cool little camera! I think going back to QLD for xmas should be ok - they have had a great run and seem to have things under control unlike us here in Vic *shakes head*

If I ever wanted to buy or build a house here it would be a traditional stilt house. I dig the simplicity and functionality they offer. Of course, I would need slightly more amenities like an air-con and good wifi lol I'm such a barang! But I really like how they sectioned off the areas for different uses like the kitchen, the lounging area, and the main house above. :)

    • @MarcsMildlyInteresting

There are companies that make them but in modern materials - We have seen them up close and they look pretty good and you can get all the mod cons too! Far nicer than the concrete McMansions that are sometimes built!
I totally dig the separate kitchen, especially when some of the more exotic fish dishes are being prepared!

And this is exactly how the majority of the population live and have lived for a very long time, and whether we westerners think that's good or bad, it's the way it is and they're perfectly content with it for a variety of reasons. I have traveled extensively throughout SEA and these cultures haven't evolved over centuries because of endless wars and a complete lack of education, and we should seriously think about that before we start throwing money at the cute girlfriend that somehow shows up when we visit these countries; I've seen it all too often. A typical family grow their own vegetables, they have chicken and often cows and/or pigs and they can easily live on $2-$4 per day, the wole family, easily. When the western guy arrives and gets involved with a local girl things change dramatically, because suddenly the ATM is open, the money starts to flow to her and her family, and we actually often have a very negative influence on the whole family structure, because the $100-$200 or $500 per week we give as allowance to that oh-so-cute girlfriend corrups the entire family. Suddenly gambling comes into the picture, the brothers stop working because why would they work when the money is so easily available, the drinking hits new highs and it gets worse and worse and more and more money is needed. It's a vicious cicle and we're not helping these families in the least in so many cases. It's ok to help but we have to be very smart about how we do it and unfortunately most westerners are hopelessly stupid when it comes to foreighn cultures, the men are simply blinded by the cute gf, and to us the $$$ seem minimal but it can easily lead to serious family problems and very often ends very badly. The general population doesn't understand budgeting, and there's no 'tomorrow', life is lived today, because they've lived for generations in uncertainty. Tomorrow may never come, so let's live and party today, and giving a family in Cambodia, or anywhere else in SEA for that matter, even a few hundred dollars at a time, is criminal. I've spent years in Cambodia, using it as a home-base while traveling to the neighboring countries, and these people are very good people, they're incredibly tough people and they'll see through you in a milli second. Common sense isn't common, it's actually learned from our parents and throughout life; common sense doesn't exist in SEA, it's just the way it is. Money corrupts almost instantly...I've been there, done that, don't do it...or at least do it very carefully and only as small gifts and only when absolutely necessary. Sorry, I didn't mean to ramble, but I like SEA very much and we westerners aren't necessarily helping these people by simply throwing money around, it's disrespectful and we're looked upon as self-centered walking ATM machines by most of these people and they laugh behind our backs, and it didn't use to be like that, and might I add, I'm not accusing the gentleman in this video of any of this, but watching the video just got me going. Sorry.

    • @MarcsMildlyInteresting
      @MarcsMildlyInteresting  4 роки тому

Hey Sean, Thanks for sharing your well thought out and considerate comment.
Sounds like you have a fair bit of experience in the area and have witnessed a few things in your time travelling around SEA.
I think the main thing any westerner can do is to act with diligence and to educate themselves before jumping head first into one of the scenarios you described above. I am lucky to have spent a lot of time with my Khmer Wife and her family (you can see in our other videos) and have an appreciation of the mindset, priorities and values they have. Things like planning, problem solving, critical thinking & root cause analysis seem to be the biggest things that frustrate me, where as I frustrate them cause sometimes I just don't go with the flow or am a buzz kill playing devil's advocate to any idea they have - it's an interesting dynamic!
You have given a few great ideas for topics I will try and cover off in some future vids too!
Thanks again for watching and sharing!
      Cheers
      Marc

We have no idea how fortunate we are in Australia. The second house is one you’d tend to see on the outskirts of town.

G'day Gary! Both kinds are very basic aren't they - but most of the time the folk who live there are perfectly happy. We take for granted so many things in Aus - its only when you see these places (when they run off batteries and need water pumped in etc) you can really appreciate what we have. Mind you, its always great getting out in the thick of it - cannot beat the relaxed vibe the Khmer fold ooze when chilling out have a couple of cans out in the village!

Hey Zero You - Thanks for watching! Funnily enough, they probably had better conditions before the KR took over in 75. From what I understand of the countries history, Cambodia was relatively well off before April 1975. Those 4 years, and the years of conflict after the liberation really stiffleed development. There are much better (and much worse) living conditions across the country as well, but everyone seems far more relaxed than us in the west. Where do you live yourself? Are you in/have you ever visited Cambodia before? Thanks for commenting and hope you enjoy our videos!
