      actually so true, to me this kind of reaction shows that they aren't at all uncomfortable with it and don't feel like they're walking on eggshells, and that's how you want it to be around friends. it also shows that, even if they have some internalised homophobia, they're working on it.

      Nope, Isaac was more mad at himself. One, for being someone his best friend couldn't trust. And two, after hearing a fan shout faggot at the team, he realised, it happened so many times, he didn't have the chance to be there for his best friend. So, to Isaac, his best friend had to deal with this shit all alone for many many years just because he couldn't be a better friend.

      @Wattywatasaurus Рік тому +55

      @@gcbryan89I think it was a combination of the two.
      The key line is “What is it about me that made you think that you couldn’t tell me?”
      At first, he probably felt really hurt that Colin had been hiding such a huge part of himself from him even though he was his best friend, and took that as an implicit suggestion that he came off as homophobic. It was that suggestion that cut deep. So that’s why he directed his anger towards Colin.
      But on the flipside, he was probably also reflecting on his own behaviour in the past and how he might’ve contributed to an environment where Colin felt he had to stay in the closet, and in turn started to feel angry and ashamed at himself for allowing it to happen. That’s why he directed his anger at the fan. Hearing a slur that he’d probably heard many times before, but now knowing his best friend is gay, made him realise how much homophobia actually exists in the world, and that his failure to directly challenge it may have been part of the problem, and in that moment, he decided those days were over and he was going to sort that motherfucker out.
      His tone when he asked that question suggested he wasn’t so much looking for an answer as waiting for confirmation to something he already suspected. So he was relieved when Colin assured him it had nothing to do with him.

    Love how wholesome this show is, he finds out his best mate is gay, and it goes with him not being able to be around him, not as you would think because he is homophobic, but because he feels like his best mate could not trust him, and he felt hurt by that. @@Timeless-Moments Without the first season, you wouldn't have seen the revelations. Every character which came off as bad or arrogant or hostile have been exposed to be people (not characters) with issues and foibles and reasons for their previous expressions. They are still as seen in season one (except Roy's voice is a little deeper!), but now we see them are fuller more rounded individuals.
      Jamie couldn't have had his breakthrough without being the asshole of S1. Doctor Sharon couldn't have had her own revelations without coming off as an asshole to Ted in S2. This is the heart and soul (also sole) of good writing. Not giving an audience what they want; but taking them on a journey. Telling them a story.

      The best part of this was that Issac wasn't even in the room for that speech. He INSTINCTIVELY knew that his best friend needed support. He recognized that he screwed up by going off on his own trying to process his own insecurities and shortcomings, instead of just being there for his best friend. And rectifies it by going to Colin's house, learning the lesson Ted did on his own and in his own way.

    One thing that I think is amazing about this is not only is this a good example of a healthy, male relationship - it is also one of the very few healthy male relationships between a straight guy and a gay guy. I think in the past, the taboo of showing gay characters also resulted in a lack of gay/straight friendships with the only real exceptions is gay best friend and female lead
    Ted Lasso brought us that friendship here and not only that, the basically kept every other Hollywood stereotype of a male friendship the same: video games, talking about sex, asking about attractiveness of xyz
    This is important to me because I think a lot of guys (both gay and straight) always viewed gay guys as feminine men and a friendship with them is more akin to being friends with a woman than just another guy, which probably weighs on a lot of gay guys who don't want to risk their friendship with their male friends. Not because of homophobia but because we just don't see regular friendships shown up until shows like this

    In my head canon, if Richmond is like most other Premier League teams, Richmond probably has an academy as part of the team and I can easily see Isaac and Colin being friends since Childhood. It is why when I watched Isaac's response to his discovery about Colin in the previous episode, I felt that Isaac was probably hurt that Colin didn't tell him than be offended.

    Amazing script and dialogue and story in this scene: it brings tears to my eyes. But it’s always jarring to see how rich these young guys are: Colin’s glass house and Issac’s orange supercar. Because of Richmond’s low spot on the league table, I just never got it that Premier League is just that. But I’m a Yank, what do I know?

    This is exactly how me and one of my best friends who I consider my little brother were when he came out to me. We were at a little party at my place and a bunch of us were there, I went to grab a beer and he was in the kitchen by himself just kind of standing there thinking and a bit nervous, I asked him if he was good and he asked if he could talk to me away from everyone else. And I said sure bro what's going on is everything alright. And we went outside to go smoke a cigarette and as soon as the door shut behind us and I sparked up the stogie took a drag and passed it to him he told me he was bi, and that he was currently seeing this dude and that even though I had invited everyone to the house that he made sure this one crazy bastard who I truly consider my best friend and brother like no questions asked type shit to make sure he was there because even though he was sure I was gonna be ok with what he was telling me he just had that 1% chance of what if. And as he told me I just listened and looked at him, after he finished talking and the cig was almost done I looked at him and hugged him, I told him that this changes nothing, you were my brother before you ever told me and you will always be my brother. That this didn't change the way I looked at him nor did it affect his or mine's relationship or hanging out or anything. He looked at me with tears in his eyes and said thank you. I did tell him I was a little hurt that he was afraid I wouldn't take it good that he had to make sure this crazy old bastard was there in case shit went wrong, and he told me "you're a manly man, you live and have always lived a certain way, you don't have a soft bone in your body and even though I didn't think you would flip out, to have me of all people someone you consider family to tell you that they've been living this double life and doing things that you would not believe, it scared me" and I looked at him with tears in my eyes and hugged him and said all I ask is you let me meet this guy so I can make sure to tell him he better not hurt you. And we both laughed and went back inside. Afterwards me and my crazy old bastard brother were outside and he said "so did he tell you" and I said yes he did, and he said I'm glad it went well, and I told him fuck you for having to be here in case I didn't. And he said "that boy respects you so much that he told all of us, we've known for weeks but he made sure to be here to talk to you face to face like a man, and he loves you so much that all of us he told quick and easy but for you he was scared shitless because your opinion of him matters to him. That's how much he loves and respects you" then I told him I get it and he's still a fuck because what was he gonna do if I didn't take it good, and my brother said beat you over the head with a frying pan and duct tape you to a chair and draw dicks in your face with a sharpie till you woke up. And we both laughed and I said you'd really hit me with a frying pan, and he said yep the cast iron one you got sitting in the oven actually. Make sure I get through your thick skull. Then we both laughed and said well at least I know you love me enough not to kill me.

    Idky critics thought this plot line was unrealistic. Jaime never came across as homophobic. Also, he is a black man and more and likely has dealt with the racism that mirrors the homophobia. Am I saying it’s unrealistic that he could have been homophobic? No.
    In fact, to a degree, there should be no reason he can’t tell Colin he loves him, so one could define that as some small amount of prejudice, or at least apprehension,
    But to just assume it’s more realistic that he would be a hateful bigot? That’s not in his character.

    • @ashisepicallyawesome
      @ashisepicallyawesome 27 днів тому +1

      I) It's Isaac, not Jamie. 2) As Colin explains his hesitancy was not about Isaac (or the others) specifically, but about his own hangups and feeling that people would not react well. Again, as he says he was 99% sure that Isaac would support him. And that's the reality for many and why they keep it from friends and family. And it's a stereotype, that is sadly rooted into reality, that there are a lot of men who are uncomfortable telling their friends they love them. Yeah, Isaac can sit there and talk about rom-coms because that's not being vulnerable. The actor who plays Colin even says that football is called "The Beautiful Game" yet there are so many fans who cannot say "I love you" to their mates.

    Issac needs to put himself in Colin's shoes and ask himself "Would he be comfortable telling anyone (inc. his close friend) about his sexual orientation?" While being gay is acceptable in today's climate, it's still a hot button issue for those who've not exactly come around to. Especially in the world of football.

    This whole storyline made no sense to me. I think i must have missed something cos I had no idea Colin and Isaac were friends. Obviously they were teammates, seemed to get along reasonably well and they used to bully Nate together. As far as I'm aware, that was the extent of their association. We never saw them grab a pint together or hang out at each other's place so why would Isaac have expected Colin to ever confide in him? I think a couple of scenes of them doing friend-stuff at any point over the three seasons would have done the trick but I just find it hard to believe Isaac and Colin were actually longtime close friends (which is what Isaac's reaction suggests) this whole time

    • @Muss67
      @Muss67 Рік тому +6

      You missed the entire point of the Issac/Colin relationship. Issac owned up to his mistake and apologized like a man, and Colin accepted his apology because he understood his friends feeling and lack of awareness of Colins feeling and struggles with hiding his sexuality. This scene and the one where he get the red card for going after the fan for his homophobic remark IS Issac realizing how difficult it was Colin all these years. He didn’t force Colin to come out, when Issac found out he kept it to himself and handed it in a manner that was not fair to Colin, but he never said a word to anyone. For you to look at this and just classify Issac as an asshole because he struggled with understanding his own feeling in the situation, then learning from his mistake, to then defended his friend for slander and make the effort to apologize man to man, backing his friend no matter what his sexuality is. The whole point of Ted Lasso as a show is to highlight the growth people can achieve, and that is exactly what this scene is doing for Issac. As a gay man who was in the process of coming out to friends and family, I felt Colin’s feelings but I also sympathize with Issac because everyone has people who they love that they are terrified to tell, even though that person will accept them and people who will need time to process and understand. You being judgmental about this just shows me you totally missed the point of what the show was always meant to be about.
