My first introduction to the Universal monsters came when I watched the TV series "Monster Squad" as a child. The one with Walt, Drac, Frank and Bruce W. Wolf acting as crime fighters. When I got older, I watched the classic Universal movies and still do today. They're timeless treasures.

I was born in 1970, so my introduction to the classic Universal Monsters came through reruns of the Munsters, Shock Theater on the weekends and Famous Monsters of Filmland.
I had those monster View Masters! I hadn’t thought about them in years. As far as I know, they’re still packed away somewhere at my parent’s house. They were not derived from any TV special I’m aware of. Apparently, they were just created for the View Master.

Excellent video, and I hope you fared well with Milton. I’m from New Orleans, so I know all about hurricanes! As a Monster Kid growing up in the ‘60s and ‘70s, I had all of the Aurora monster models as well as most of the Monster Scenes and Prehistoric Scenes kits. Those models are long gone now, but I started collecting again in the ‘90s and early 2000s. As an artist, my model painting skills have vastly improved since the old days!
I had a wide assortment of monster toys, books, figures and collected all things PLANET OF THE APES, including the models and a complete collection of the POTA magazine.
I grew up absorbing any monster magazine I could find, starting with FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND. I’m proud to say that I currently illustrate and write for SCARY MONSTERS magazine.
I wish I could post photos here, as I would post photos of my current monster models that you would be free to use in your videos. These include Aurora re-issues as well as some by Polar Lights, Moebius and others.
Might I suggest that you make a video about PLANET OF THE APES merchandise? There certainly was a lot of it, predating JAWS and STAR WARS.

Thank you. Although many areas were battered, mine was not....doing well (loved strong wind storms to be honest), but hate that anyone has to deal with terrible aftermath. As you would know, for sure. When you mentioned your paint skills I thought to myself how that is what I would ruin about them. Love that you had those all and continue to do so, they were amazing kits back then, and I bet your work is amazing now...I do wish we could post pictures here, darn it. Your collection sounds incredible, I too love the Planet of the Apes. Thank you for the compliment, the watch, and the comment. See you soon.

I also had a small activity book called Spooky Action cut-outs, by James Razzi. It featured Vampires, werewolves, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde and something that's supposed to be godzilla. You'd cut out the pages and asemble or fold the illustrations. You could ake a skeleton in a rocking chair, Make Frankenstein's monster tip his hat to an old lady. (We never saw that in the movies!) I did a little research and as far as I know there were never any Universal monster claymation specials (licensed or unlicensed). I couldn't find much information on the actual Viewmaster reels but I would guess either the art was made specifically for them or was taken from books that reprinted versions of the original stories.

@@pantheonvideo View Master had a staple of artists who created the sculptures used with the slides. Dracula and the Wolf Man were done by an artist named Joe Liptak, while Frankenstein was done by Mr. Liptak and an artist named Lelia Heath Pearson. There is a View Master website that catalogs all the artists, what reels they worked on and some behind the scenes information. I know UA-cam doesn't like links posted in comments, but that website shouldn't be too hard to find. The problem with the three monster sets is that they were created after GAF had bought the company and switched the film stock to their own rather the previously used Kodachrome, so the slides have all tinted to red. The reels on Kodachrome look they were made yesterday. Growing up I had (and still do have) the talking version of Dracula and Frankenstein and a few years ago got the Wolf Man off of ebay. These are not adaptions of the Universal films but are there own takes on the tales, told from a first person perspective (at least the voice over is) Dracula is told from the point of view of Jonathan Harker's nephew and Frankenstein is told from Doctor Frankenstein's perspective. Now that I think about it, the first person perspective is in line with the original novels. Since the Wolf Man isn't based on a book it's a bit more of an original tale. Over all an excellent video, especially since you had an image of Topps Creature Feature/You'll Die Laughing cards. I think the only thing you forgot were the Crestwood series of books; which my fiends and I had on constant rotation of checking them out from our school library. Though I have I have to admit I have no idea what flip it's are.

@@pantheonvideo Sorry if this is a double post, but what I previously posted disappeared. View Master had a staple of artists who created the sculptural/diorama reels. Both Dracula and The Wolf Man were created by an artist named Joe Liptak. Frankenstein was created by Mr. Liptak and an artist named Lelia Heath Pearson.
The problem with these monster reels is that they were created after View Master was purchased by GAF, which substituted its own film stock in place of the previously used Kodachrome. That GAF film stock has now tinted red with age. If GAF had continued to use Kodachrome the “slides” would look like they were taken yesterday.
I had and still do have the talking versions of Dracula and Frankenstein. I got the non-talking (I’m not sure if a talking version was made for those reels) off of ebay a few years ago.
These are not adaptations of the Universal films but rather new takes on the original novels. The story lines are told in the first person (at least the audio is); Dracula is told from the point of view of Jonathan Harker’s nephew and Frankenstein is told by Dr. Frankenstein himself. The Wolf Man not having a book to be based on is much more of an original tale. Now that I think about it, telling the story in the first person is very much in keeping with the original books style.
Overall a very well done video. I think you got pretty much got everything. I was pleased to see that you included an image of the Topps Creature Feature/You'll Die Laughing trading cards. The only thing you missed was the Crestwood series of books. My friends and I had those books on constant rotation of checking them out from our school library.
