I could add a slight suggestion which you can tell me if you think is worth the effort. Consider purchasing some bait worms for three dollars from your local walmart to provide a constant supply of worm castings and then every so often pull back a bit of the top soil and throwing in some plant based table scraps (banana, carrot, potatoe peels) to feed the worms which feed the tree so that the tree can feed you long term. good idea or unsustainable?

Great information; my first year planting out bear root Bartlett pear trees! Armature for sure...So many questions...so I've been trying to learn by listening to expert like yourself...but now I'm getting conflicting ways to plant bear root tree!?! Anyway, I soaked them for couple hours; purchased soil that stated specifically for planting trees/shrubs with slow release fertilizer "Vigoro" will they grow in this...monies spent was too much to repot with different soil... but love working and watching things grow and produce! I live in the Front Range of Colorado zones 4 & 5 semi arid we are having our spring monsoon weather now this is the second week. Any feed back and suggestions would be appreciated, Great video thank you.
Thanks deeply for sharinG all of your very useful tips!!! I shall be lookinG for a Dwarf Tree to grow and I came here for advice so I appreciated learninG so much from the both of you!! Happi Summer!✌😇🌻😍🌻🐕🐈🐕🦋⚘🌹🌲🌎
Hi, compost becomes compacted and stops the roots from penetrating the soil below. You should never use compost in any mixture. It should be used for a top dressing only . Unbenounced to many gardeners, they have been mislead. I am a master gardener/botanist
This was tremendous. Thank you. Living in Pittsburgh, I've been trying to find a good starting point for container trees like this. Any recommended resources for ongoing feeding schedules and/or recommended nutrients?
were they bare root or potted? what size pots did you use? were they dwarf or semi-dwarf? i have some semi-dwarf trees to plant and when i tried to dig holes i hit rock. lots and lots of rocks! :(

Hello a chicago an gardener now what to do trees in containers. My ? Is store for winter? Do I bring in home cover it with plastic or just leave outside in cold?
Hi jake loved the vids plz keep it up and can u please do a vid in what crops grow in spring in Arizona and when the spring planting season starts thanks
He said no compost in the pot, but I put compost in all my pots and all my trees are lush and very full of fruits. And it gets pretty hot here where I am. So 🤷♀️
Im from phil. Love to avail tha big container of yours for my grafted sweet mango I dont know where I can buy like that one here in mla phil but any way thank you for that info ❤️👍
when the tree needs to be repotted that's when you need to repot it, just kidding really great info here especially about not sizing up pots too quickly
***** Just rewatch the video and check on amazon or do a web search. He mentions everything and you can purchase a lot of the things he mentions in bulk online. I also have watched a different series of video by a horticulturist, and with all due respect to Shamus, I like the horticulturists method for growing fruit trees a little better and his way is more affordable.
+Sally Jackson Ah, thank you for the information. I have a lemon Meyer tree and it has been doing okay for the last 4-5 year but I have no idea what I am doing. It is in a whisky barrel (I think it was a whisky barrel) I haven't moved it from there and it's still very small. I think it is a dwarf but I can't recall. I would love to have other potted fruit trees but I need to research information on it.
Raquel Raquel it may be root bound if it is 5 years old and small. My lemon tree is about a year old and its taking off like crazy and ive been pruning it all season
does they type of pot matter? I've tried 3 times to grow a lime tree in a terra cotta pot, died every time, looks like I did everything wrong. This video will help, thanks again!
You can use something with similar ingredients to E.B. Stone's Citrus Potting Soil Mix. Terra cotta pots breathe better which is good for the roots but only if you remember you need to water more because of the increased evaporation which is keeping the pot cool
Of course you can. Look how big that mango got in that medium-size pot. And there are much larger containers. You just need to root-prune and/or re-pot every 3 years or so. And make sure that the water drains out freely enough.
My advice if you're using it for small-scale container planting is get the recycled glass product "Growstones" which should be available from your local Hydroponics / Indoor Gardening store. It keeps glass bottles out of landfills and has superior air and water holding capacity compared to the lava rocks!
Thanks for another very informative video. I have just one question in regards to container growing. Are there no issues of the roots starting to bake in those black plastic containers when it's in the 100's?
I would be concerned about the stress of frequent repotting. Every repotting would be an opportunity for the plant to die. Maybe I'm wrong. Obviously Shamus doesn't have that problem.... I'm trying to grow fruit trees in a very low and wet location in Florida, so really need to use pots because I'm hitting ground water at 8" under the soil.

Will a Hass Avocado grow and produce fruit in a 5-7 gal container if pruned to 6-10 '? Or must it be put in the ground? Thanks!
Do you use regular dirt or do you use fertilizer?? Or do you mix one of those two with those three things you got there?
All the ingredients mentioned can be found on amazon.com as well. And that's where i found them all before I came to this channel.
Can you please, name them, so I can order them?...thanks

At what point can you stop changing it from one container to a bigger one? Could it have been left in the 15 gallon container?
+Sally Jackson Ah, thank you for the information. I have a lemon Meyer tree and it has been doing okay for the last 4-5 year but I have no idea what I am doing. It is in a whisky barrel (I think it was a whisky barrel) I haven't moved it from there and it's still very small. I think it is a dwarf but I can't recall. Jake what does shamus feed his container fruit trees i dont think he said? or does he only use compost on top and gets results like that?
How long does it take to harvest the mangoes

Do you mulch the container plants? Thanks
How can save in this tree when is cold
Tôi muốn mua 100 gallons containers tìm ở đâu
Hey, Jake I live in Texas do the lila and joey avocado grow here I want to buy one but not sure if it will thrive here.
Hi, can we plant the mango tree in a large fabric grow bag?
I don't see why not, I would mulch the top and maybe put some extra water-holding capacity media on the sides since those tend to dry out much faster
does they type of pot matter? I've tried 3 times to grow a lime tree in a terra cotta pot, died every time, looks like I did everything wrong. This video will help, thanks again!
You can use something with similar ingredients to E.B. Stone's Citrus Potting Soil Mix. Terra cotta pots breathe better which is good for the roots but only if you remember you need to water more because of the increased evaporation which is keeping the pot cool
Breadfruit is it ok in the pot?
Is persimmon good for container growing?
Hi jake,
My name is Jeanny, I'm interesting to buy this big mango in your video, is it possible Shum o Leary ship the tree to stockton California?
I have mangos and guava tree in container 8to 10 years old but no fruit. what I should do for get fruit.
could be your location
Bad sound...i cant understand. Are you close toa highway or busy street?
can u grow apples in container?
Of course you can. Look how big that mango got in that medium-size pot. And there are much larger containers.
You just need to root-prune and/or re-pot every 3 years or so. And make sure that the water drains out freely enough.
Pot size does not matter unless it is a flower really. When you plant the tree in the grond the water runs has no limit.
Can you grow guava tree in a container??
Does any one know where to get lava rock sand in Toronto, Canada ?
My advice if you're using it for small-scale container planting is get the recycled glass product "Growstones" which should be available from your local Hydroponics / Indoor Gardening store. It keeps glass bottles out of landfills and has superior air and water holding capacity compared to the lava rocks!
Thanks for another very informative video.
I have just one question in regards to container growing.
Are there no issues of the roots starting to bake in those black plastic containers when it's in the 100's?
i wonder about that too. thinking perhaps to paint the outside white?
Add more mulch than soil, it’ll be ok
GREAT info!
