You're correct this is an homage to doo wop music. A popular style in the 1950's and early 60's. His writing is sophisticated and elevates this simple love song'
I love that you picked up how he switched the last line from "That hasn't happened for the longest time" to "I intend to hold you for the longest time". Billy Joel has always been one of my favorites, and part of it is how his lyrics are so creatively put together. One of my other favorite rhymes is "I'll take my chances; I forgot how nice romance is".
As I understand it, Billy Joel was between wives, feeing old and a failure at love, when he met this lovely young woman and felt love like when he was a young man again. He knew this was a temporary relationship, as did she, but that was enough for the moment. She became his muse for a time, and the result was this song. Love has the power to rejuvenate which explains the old men returning to their youth again. And Joel was able to hold out hope again for his emotional future. A lot of Joel's songs are biographical, mostly about himself, but sometime about others. This one was personal to him. And yes, a cappella was very much a sign of the late 1950s/early 1960s. Mostly Doo Wop, sometimes love ballads. Often occurred on urban street corners. oving seeing you have the insight to understand Billy Joel.
🎼🗝️ Mr. Saeed , you have a way of tapping into my memory lane with your song choices. I have always really liked Billy Joel. So .... my Senior year of Highschool I decided to join the school chorus. Our music teacher chose this song for us to sing. It was really fun with the "Oooohs" and "Aaaaahs" .. and the "Bum - Bah - Bums". Thanks for choosing another great one ! 🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🍰🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼
The whole "An Innocent Man" album was meant to be hamages to Billy Joel's muscial influences. Another doo-wop hit from the album is "Uptown Girl", whose music video features his future 2nd wife, supermodel Christie Brinkley.
I love this song, my brother was class of 1959, me 1969, and his record collection and listening to them with him was so formative for me as a kid! We still get along!❤
I saw Billy Joel in concert when he was touring for this album. When they sang this song, it was just the whole band gathered around a microphone, and it was glorious!
Saeed, Yeah, I knew you'd get it, that they were their younger selves that were in the hallway and when they come out of the bathroom at the end! Alot of people don't see that! I'm so happy you found Billy Joel! FABULOUS REACTION!
I am always down for the old skool singers. Billy's storytelling is amazing. He has such a huge catalog of great songs. A few heavier suggestions are Pressure, You May Be Right, Sometimes a Fantasy , Allentown and Matter of Trust
Tim Foust, the bass singer for the acapella group Home Free, used to tell stories between sets in their concerts to give them all a chance to catch their breath. One concert, he ran out of stories. So he decided to dramatically read song lyrics. He started out with "And So It Goes" by Billy Joel, noted how old it was and that it reached 33 on the charts. Then he read the lyrics to a song that was topping the charts at the time of the concert. It was "Whip/Nae Nae" 😂😂😂😂 The contrast was hilarious. Especially Tim reading the lyrics in his serious, deep voice.
I feel like this was a tribute specifically to the song So Much In Love by the Tymes. And yes, Billy grew up on doowop in his Long Island home town of Oyster Bay. Billy pays homage to doowop and The Four Seasons with Uptown Girl. He is the best at this!
This entire album is so nostalgic to me. My dad grew up with this type of music and i was into rock and metal, my sister was into pop , my brother was into new age music and mum liked dusco. But this album we all liked . we listened to it everytime we went away camping (just about every week end during the summer) .
The premise of the video is that Billy in his later years (hence the glasses and greying hair) is at a school reunion from his class of 1959 and the photos on the wall are his schoolfriends with labels describing them, such as best dressed, most likely to succeed and so on. They all then start singing the song and switch from the then present day, back to when they were younger, with Billy not wearing glasses and his hair is slicked back to his younger look and is why the janitor looks confused at the end. The Longest Time is from Billy's 1983 album An Innocent Man, where the songs are a homage to the music that Billy grew up listening to in the 50s and 60s, so the title track was a nod to Ben E. King and the Drifters, Uptown Girl to Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons and this song to doo-wop groups like Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, and The Tymes. The other 'singers' in the video were Billy's band members at the time, although they are miming as Billy sang all of the parts himself.
@@SaeedReacts. No problem. I paused the video before it finished, after you had asked about something during it and then posted my message, only to see that you had basically worked most of it out for yourself anyway, but I just decided to leave it there all the same, rather than delete it.
Oh the harmonizing in this!!! He's so jazzy cool! Long, long time ago they called a "Hep cat" I believe. ☺ Def a doo-wap sound here. Billy is so very eclectic.
I thought maybe the guy playing the janitor was a former doo wop star. So I Googled him. His name was Nick Stewart. He wasn't a doo wop star, but he was an actor known best for being on the Amos n Andy Show. You may or may not find that interesting. He had a long acting career. One of his last roles was playing a shoe shiner in the movie Silver Streak.
3:36 You made me think of "Grease" right here. Funny thing was, I was already wondering if you've seen the movie. I know you're a film buff. Great music in that soundtrack.
As delightful as this song is, it’s actually fluff in comparison to most of Billy’s output. If you haven’t yet, check out Piano Man (official video), Downeaster Alexa, Scenes From an Italian Restaurant, New York State of Mind, Vienna, Always a Woman, and Lullabye just for starters, to begin to understand Billy’s incredible genius and stature.
I reacted to Honesty, but its blocked and also recorded a reaction to Scenes From An Italian Restaurant, but its not uploaded yet. They are definitely coming 😄
All the backing vocals are Billy and the aobum this came from innocent man each song is styled after music that influenced billy, e.g. Uptown girl is Frankie valli. Longest time is 50s doo wop
On the record all the voices were Billy Joel.

Amazing lyricist! Such a great song. Thanks for watching.
I love that he actually listens to the lyrics.

INNOCENT MAN (title track from this album) is a MUST. Incredible lyrics (as usual)
Love, love, all Billy Joel, all through his career!❤❤

"Vienna" by Billy Joel is absolutely beautiful. Thanks for reacting to Billy Joel. His music catalog is quite extensive.
I reacted to it, but its currently blocked on UA-cam and now on Patreon until its resolved.

4 part harmony with himself

You should check him out live at the grey whistle test NY state of mind in his younger years
His saxaphone player is awesome in a lot of his music
Will add this one to my list. Thanks!
This is going to be around for a long time to come. A classic.
For the longest time 😄

The video is fun but when you just listen to the song on the stereo it's fantastic. Always reminds me of Rocky somehow😅
Sometimes nostalgia creeps up on you and hits you right in the feels.
100%.
I think he is getting over his wedding jitters.
It is his school reunion do.
You should check out some of his live performances. There's a recent video of him performing "Vienna" on the Howard Stern show.
I recorded a reaction to Vienna, but its currently blocked.
ANOTHER SUGGESTION FOR YOU IF YOU LIKE A GREAT ROCK SONG- " Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress" - The Hollies. ONE OF THE BEST INTROS EVER

I have seen it, but many many years ago. Maybe its time for a rewatch 😄
Some of Billy's best though he's hard to pin down. Still Rock and Roll is similar feel to this one while Pressure is quite different, just my opinion.
React to his song and so it goes
