I started listening to your channel right before Christmas. No words to express the loss of your daughter. My daughter was killed by drunk driver a year ago, she was 27. I have been struggling since losing her and my job has been my lifeline keeping me busy, I will turn 64 this year. This video compelling me to retire by next March. Appreciate you keeping it real.

Thanks for sharing your story. It's not so different from my own. I was fortunate to have a great job with great bosses for 20 years. As I turned 63 that all changed. Company leadership changed (for the worse). I went to the hospital with a very bad case of covid and survived by what I truly believe was the power of prayer. I then received notice my employer wanted to pay out my pension immediately in a lump sum, just as I had payed off all my bills! I retired in Oct after my 63rd birthday and never looked back.

Thank you for sharing your very personal reason Buzz! I am learning as much as I can about retirement because I want to have my husband retire before the recommend age of 67. It takes a a lot of guts to retire at an ‘early’ age. I have been speaking with my aunt years ago and based on what she was telling me, I was nudging her to have her husband retire before he is 65. Fast forward to last year, he died before he retired at 62 after he spent a year in the hospital.

I’m so sorry about your daughter. The trauma must have overwhelmed you, your wife and family. It’s not something you ever recover from. You just learn to live with it. We lost our 31 year old nephew suddenly (motorcycle accident) in May of 2022. 11 days later my husband found his 62 year old brother deceased on the floor in his home.(heart attack) 2 months later I was diagnosed with urinary tract cancer. 2022 absolutely stunk. My cancer is under control but the constant monitoring takes a toll. All of these events have caused my husband and me to reevaluate and he has decided to retire this April at age 62 1/2 and start collecting his SS. (I’m already retired and on SS) We have so much we want to do and see while we are still able to. God Bless you Buzz. Keep the videos coming!

Good chat. I worked with many people who had zero plan about retiring. They just wanted out of there. I planned, studied, wrote down the reasons for when that day or opportunity might come years in advance. Then it did and it was still a challenge and seemed like it was happening to someone else. I guess its called surreal. Two weeks before I walked out the door for the last time my father passed away. He was not in the best of heath but never the less it was sudden and unexpected. You never know what curve balls life is going to toss at you. Keep it simple, enjoy the moments . Glad your doing well.

I had a profound loss like you and your wife a few years ago. It absolutely changed me on a soul level. It's like I can't experience joy anymore. I don't laugh easily. I will notice something is funny, but can't reach the physical laughter. I cry easier. I try very hard to recite positive things that I am grateful for. Stuff like that in which I never had to make effort before. I like your outlook that you might not always feel the depression that you feel now. It's true, the only constant in life is change. I guess being physically older doesn't help. The weird aches and pains that can spring up for doing ordinary things is humbling.

I'm not actually surprised that you got such a positive/loving response to your video as I think that nearly anyone can feel for others in that or other situations that they pray they will never have to face. Also in spite of the negativity that the media and whatever else try to push there are a lot of very good people out there and most will help where they can.
We have had a young family member go through a very nasty medical episode recently and the way people just pitched in and helped where they could was heartwarming.
Your comment on time is right on the mark imo, it's the one thing that we all have that's not guaranteed but most of us seem to not consider it so it just passes by unnoticed.
My view on having money/resources is that they just give you time/choices that you may not have if you don't have them.
Good to hear that you're clear and that you got the time to now enjoy your life or live how you choose.
    Cheers.

About 15 years ago I retired from a technician job after 31 years, but I was also teaching my craft nights at a community college. I loved teaching & the students, but the administration changed went nuts & sucked the life out of everything. I learned I had taught long enough I could retire right then or later if I wanted too. Then my fav nephew died at 18.5 yo unexpectedly. That did it, I retired a 2nd time because as they say, “Life is short!”

I've been watching your channel periodically and just ran into this one tonight. A few responses. First, I retired in March of 2021 the day after my 62nd birthday. Like the friend that you mentioned, my older sister was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer at age 45. Although she did every treatment offered, she eventually passed away two months shy of her 50th birthday. My father-in-law was diagnosed with prostate cancer at age 60 and later, 2X with colon cancer but 31 years later, he's still up and about. On November 19th, 2010, my eldest son, who was in the process of attending the Columbus PD academy was found deceased on the floor of his bedroom in an apartment that he shared with his best friend. He was 27 years old, and cause of death was an aortic dissection. I survived a pedestrian run in with a vehicle on a Saturday evening on12/17/2022 in downtown Cleveland. A few years younger and a step or two faster, I'd most likely been a fatality. Thank God for the aging process. So, like you and your family, life has thrown my wife and I a few curve balls. My wife and I have a remaining son, who just turned 34. He along with my beautiful daughter-in-law have given us two granddaughters (5/13/21 and 7/6/23) and like you, we want to continue on with life for them. A bit of good news, my Medicare kicked in on 3/1/24 and I turn 65 on 3/24. Good luck to your family and you and hope to continue watching and subscribing to your channel.

👍 if you can retire early, do it!! You can always work part time on retirement, you’re allowed to keep all of your income up to a certain point and then for every little bit you make, the government takes a small portion, like every two dollars you make they take a dollar.
For people who say oh I’m going to wait till I’m 70 for close to it, before I retire. Well, your health could be a lot less healthy at 70 then it will be at 60 or 62! The older you get the harder to do the things that you want to do when you’re old!
Retire early if you set yourself up, have everything paid for. Don’t just sit in a chair, go and enjoy your retirement !!
My husband waited for retirement. He couldn’t wait. We had plans taken off, things to do ,places to see. Exactly 6.5 months before he was to retire, he went to the doctor due to some health issues, then within two hours he received a call back from the doctor saying, we believe you have cancer! Pancreatic cancer, at age 62 😢. He lived 18 months after his diagnosis.😢 he’s been gone seven years next month😢
Go and enjoy your time that you worked so hard for.👍

Thank you for commenting. I advocate for retiring as soon as you're financially able. Problem is, what does financially able mean? $200,000 in savings or $2,000,000?
With my cancer diagnosis 10 years ago and my daughter passing from cancer in 2020, for me, retiring with minimal savings works. I'd rather have the time than the money.
Fortunately, after 7 months of retirement, my bank account is still the same.
I am sorry to read about your husband. Sometimes things don't seem fair.
      Best wishes to you! Buzz

Thanks for sharing. I commented on your last video and said that we also lost our 28-year-old daughter in 2022 to brain cancer. Now it seems that we have something else in common… about a year after my daughter’s death, my wife was diagnosed with B cell Lymphoma. Ironically she is an oncology nurse who specializes in blood cancers (lymphoma, multiple myeloma and leukemia) so you could say that “she knows too much”. She has had immunotherapy and is doing well, but there’s always that dark cloud overhead as you approach your next scan. Her next PET is the end of February. We are both 58 but this has been our motivation to move more quickly into retirement or semi-retirement while we can enjoy it. We are people of Faith so that is what sustains us in good times and in the valley. Best of health and retirement to you.

Wow......I feel so bad after reading this. It just doesn't seem fair. There has to be a limit to the pain that we must endure. I pray that your wife gets through this issue. I guess it's good that she's an oncology nurse. There will be no surprises. Hope her spirits are high. When the doctor read me my ultrasound results telling me about the mass on my left side, I had already prepared my mind for the worst so I paused, thought about it, then pulled out my pocket knife and said "let's cut it out right now!". Humor is what got me through it all. Stay in touch please. Buzz

I’m sure you’re aware that your little chats are helping many people. Life is great. But as you already know, at times things come along that suddenly disrupt our plans and then attempts to crush our dreams and destroy our happiness. Cancer is a terrible, heartbreaking disease and I’m glad to hear you beat it. I lost my wife young to cancer. She was diagnosed in 2010, three years before our long planned retirement and big move down south to the land of palm trees and sandy beaches. She was however able to enjoy that dream for a short time before she had to go. That was 2015 and I’m still going because that’s what she wanted me to do. Also, sorry to hear about the loss of your daughter. I lost my youngest sister unexpectedly at the age of 29. I saw how that affected my parents and my family. But we went on because we had to. Enjoy your retirement. My advice as a season pro is to take up the hobby of taking care of yourself! Personally I find it great for the body and the mind. Now that we have all this time it can be put to good use focusing on us! We can eat healthier and exercise because there are no excuses of not enough time, a busy work schedule, and other distractions. Stay warm!

I am so sorry for the loss of your daughter. May peace be with you. I, too, was diagnosed with Small B cell lymphoma several years ago in my mid-50s. I was allergic to chemotherapy, but fortunately, I am able to take an immunability capsule daily. It will be for the rest of my life. Fortunately, there are no side effects. I occasionally think of my mortality due to the treatments, and I believe I will be truly blessed to see my mid-70s. I will take my ss at 62 and retire at 60.5 in June 2025. I am only waiting until then to maintain my current health insurance before Medicare at 65. Your comment about family parties hit a strong chord. At one time, both my parents, one of my sisters, a nephew and niece, would be at my Halloween party. They are all gone. I want to spend as much time with the rest of the family and my grandbabies as possible. Though I may miss my job, the family is way more important. By retirement, my bills will be paid, and I will be good financially, so I am not concerned. Thank you for sharing your story.

Hi Buzz. Thanks for being you and sharing your story, it was very heart felt and makes total sense for you to retire early! Go out and live the best life you can live!! Congrats on getting over the 10 year mark! You've got this!!! I had a scare with melanoma back in 2012, but I caught it extremely early as it was literally the size of a pin head, but it didn't look normal to me, so I went in to get it checked), I was lucky as it hadn't even gone through the derma yet, although I continued twice/yr derm checks for 10 years and then got the all clear at 10 years and now just go once a year for a mole check. Just a reminder to everyone to check your moles/skin etc. and get a yearly derm exam. It literally takes 10 min. and could save your life!

It’s difficult to know what to say. Your video brought so many emotions. Life events can be so random sometimes, and I’m so sorry to hear about your daughter. That must be tougher than anything to have to bear. Myself, I’ve been very lucky. I had a non cancerous brain tumour back in 2000, but it would have been inoperable had I been born just 5 years earlier. Improved surgical technology and stunning skills of doctors and nurses means I’m still here. It really hit me when you described that feeling of the letter after 10 year follow up, I felt exactly the same. Retiring and growing old is like winning the lottery I think. Time and health is so important, so retire as early as possible and enjoy time and experiences.

During 2021 and covid we had to deal with cancer in my daughter. The treatment was horrible and that alone almost finished her. It was a tumor in her upper thigh and with surgery It eliminated one of the main muscles in her leg. She had a hard time walking for a while. By the grace of the good lord she doing fine now. They keep an eye on her but so far so good. I cant imagine the loss you feel. On a side note My wifes mother was from your city and she was Polish too. Small world. She was a Jaworski. I’m sorry for your loss, I can’t imagine. I am 58 and am panicking about. Retirement, it seems there are so many video’s out there about needing a million dollars to retire, I will not reach that in any way. My husband has been on disability since 2009 so I have been the main bread winner and it’s been tough. I live in Canada so we get Canadian pension plan and old age security which do help. You hit the nail on the head, the older I get the more I realize what is important to me, which is spending time with my son and grandchildren and when I travel seeing places I have never seen before. Wow , what a heart felt message good to hear. You heart and mind is definitely in the right place. Your calm demeanor heart felt talk has to touch all of us seniors and make us think about our own experiences and have empathy for each other. Once I reached a certain age of mental maturity maybe in my late 30’s or very early 40’s something sank into my head. Don’t judge people , remember this could be a horrible day they are having for any number of reasons and just being nice to them or smiling could be the exact medicine they needed and God may have put you there at that spot for a reason. To make a difference in their miserable day. People being nice to me and understanding anytime I was going through a tough spot were the best gifts I ever got. The death thing hits us all when we live long enough and the losing a child I know to from experience takes that deep innocent joy and excitement out of our heart at least mine it did. Still got happy and enjoy life and moments of joy but that damn scar is there. But my faith never stopped, it was an angry faith for a period of time and a faith I had to take a short break from. I didn’t blame God but I sure didn’t or don’t understand but that’s ok too coz then I recenter and admit I don’t have to understand nor do I have control over it. So I do what we are supposed to do put it on His shoulders they are strong not mine. Agree wholeheartedly with everything you said here. When we lose a loved one once we go thru the normal grief process and if we have our memories that were important and when out of the blue we are doing something and bang they pop up in our thoughts I believe it’s Gods intervention and their spirit touching our souls saying hey I’m here enjoying this with you or I’m just here to comfort you watching over you or something I don’t know 😂that’s just the feeling I get. I just say thank You Jesus, that’s it simple. The peace I got just before retirement once I knew my “ number financially “ that ok I can enjoy this life as a healthy enough person in senior years , I’m good , I had enough. Nice caring people are awesome and there are many at work but the others and there were few, could make the day a challenge, when it didn’t have to be. And we are forced to deal with them on a daily basis . So another reason to be excited to retire. Life is as good as we wanna make it. I think Abe Lincoln said this. And it’s good. Thanks Buzz this a good video. God bless you and your family from the bottom of my heart. 1/4 polish here 😂.

Sorry to hear about what you’ve had to go through and the death of your daughter. You did the right thing by paying off all your bills before you retired. Your reasons for retiring at 63 makes good sense. Everyone’s situations are different and you need to do what’s best for you at that time. You just have to live with in your means and not take on any new big debt. Inflation can become an issue that you may have to think about before making a big purchase like a new car. I myself retired when I was 51 yrs. old because I could. I wanted to enjoy life before I got old. I was able to spend a lot of time with my kids and grandkids and participate in their sports and travel teams. We also vacationed all over the country and did what ever we wanted to. The one thing I did different than those that want to take their SS early at 62, I went back to work part time at 62. I had already been off work for 11 yrs. and knew because I hadn’t been contributing to SS for the 11 yrs. I was
only going get $1,500 a month because of the way they calculated how much you will get. Since I actually loved what I did for a living I went back for 4 yrs. Until I was 66 yrs. old then I took the SS and got $2,300 a month, $800 more than if I would have taken it at 62 , plus I made $160,000 working. The reason I really did that is because if I die before my wife does she will get my SS which is a lot more than her’s. I’ve been collecting it since 2018 and now after Medicare deduction my SS check is $2800 a month.

Buzz, just found your channel and, like you, there a number of retirement channels I follow. You and I are basically the same age (turning 64 on St. Patrick’s Day 😊). My plan is for my wife and I to retire when she turns 65 in July 2025. Thanks for sharing your journey.

Thank you for watching! I'm four months into retirement now and just turned 64 last week. So far the time is flying. Winter has me slowed down a bit but I'll be working the garden very soon. Congratulations on your upcoming retirement! Buzz

Hey Buzz, my hats off to you to share something personal like this which can help so many other people. Glad you’re cancer free 10 years later free …congratulations. My mother-in-law had Carsonoid cancer and she lived to be 96 1/2.

I am worried about inflation. The fact that they tell us we have 3% inflation. When it's more like twenty percent. that in itself makes me think I dont have enough cash to retire.

Well, inflation will always be there in some form. Can't let that stop you from living the retirement dream! Buzz
