My older brother who turned 92 a few days ago had the best outlook on retiring. He said "I can do nothing better than anyone".

I think people need to learn that there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing nothing.
I get up early, I get things done in the morning, but come mid afternoon, I relish my siesta.
I'll lie on the settee, maybe read, but if I drift off for an hour, great! It's what I retired for - I can do stuff, or I can do nothing. 👍 That's the meaning of freedom.

I feel strange when former coworkers contact me and ask “so what did you do today?” I am fairly new to retirement and spent my long days at work with them. When I say nothing much…watched the birds, had coffee on the deck, watched a movie, went for pizza. I can’t tell if they wish that was their day or if I deter them from retirement themselves. LOL

I’ve had a really slow day today, just feeling slightly under the weather. I sat and watched the birds in my walnut tree. Back in the day I’d still have to commute and work like a dog all day with no chance to rest. As it is, I’ll just do things later when I feel like it. That cancels out any drawbacks of retirement ☺

Right? A couple people on the FB site mentioned that as well. You feel slightly under the weather and it just makes it that much harder going through the motions of working.

Just one word for bored retirees: Pickleball. After a forced retirement I suddenly found myself lonely and aimless so one day I wandered over to the local Pickleball courts and asked how I could join in. Now I play five days a week and I’m in the best shape in years. More importantly, I get up every morning and look forward to having fun with my “Pickleball pals”. And I sleep like a baby.

Hey Buzz. Hope you and your family are well.
I've been retired for 10 yrs
when I was 55. I decided to downsize and take my small work place pension to live on with a few side hustles. I will receive my state pension when I'm 65 at the end of the year so will feel like I've won the lottery!😆
I have had times when I've felt that I should go back to full time work but that didn't last long😊
I'm never bored, I always have something to do either in the garden, house, church, family, etc. i love retirement ❤️
    Take care. Sahbia👍

A retired friend came back to the share some camaraderie at the annual Christmas Luncheon. He also shared with me the daily routine he had established. He wakes up each morning at the same time he did when he was working. He eats breakfast, brushes his teeth. takes a shower, gets dressed and by 7:00am he's tackling the task(s) he planned the day before. At 11:30 he stops what he's doing, eats some lunch, and gives himself the afternoon off, with the only requirement that there will be a plan for what he will be working on at 7:00am the next morning. He said he feels so good for what he is available to accomplish in the mornings, that the day is more pleasurable and he doesn't feel guilty for doing some fishing, taking a nap in a hammock, or whatever he decides to do with his "Me Time".

    • @BuzzRetirementGarage

That's a good plan because it gives him a routine, some structure to his day. All that can be modified too based on how he feels. He is the boss now.

If you don’t have hobbies, activities, and a curiosity to learn and do new things then you might have trouble with retirement. If your ego is such that you need to be part of the work team, part of the clique, or be the boss etc, then you might have trouble with retirement. I retired last year at 59 and am loving it. Couldn’t imagine going back.

I just lost my last pet Sammy (had 3 girl Chihuahuas for the last 18 years), and really missing my girls!!! I'm healthy and energetic. I have no family here in Florida, so I need to find my new thing. Trying to get my hubby to do more traveling, but he needs some pushing. LOL. Having worked in a hospital for 40yrs I was not aware of how much of that was part of my identity. I feel like when I retired a part of me just died. I retired fully at 67 so I'm not sure how much longer I could have safely worked. Which is to say it became apparent to me that I didn't react as quickly as when I was younger. I worked in emergency medicine so it was important that I was ALWAYS on my game. Still, having said all that I still really miss the hospital environment and my coworkers. Having served in alot of life and death situations together, you really are bonded like none others.

If you kept your certifications , there are plenty of low key medical opportunities out there, lots of jails, prisons need medical staffing., there are "free clinics", there's rural health care stuff like that, where you're still in the game but at a slower more laid back "Oh who brought in donuts"? pace.

I have the same feelings. One day I was working and making million dollar decisions for my company. The next day I was home watching 60-year-old reruns of TV westerns. My sense of self-worth and lack of purpose keeps me from enjoying my retirement.
I am doing a little consulting work on the side and that has helped. I have taken on some home projects and I am hoping it replaces my need to continue my old career.
Enjoying my retirement is not coming easy, but with time, I hope to end my addiction to work.

Listening to inane talk of getting drunk, escape rooms, 2 hours a day about what they were going to eat at lunchtime etc. If I ever tried to insert some common sense when one of the ‘children’ was going to harm themselves by drinking fluoride or something, I was mocked mercilessly. So happy to get out 😂 I sewed a button on a coat for one of them and he turned around and said to people that if I was stupid enough to do it for free then obviously he wasn’t going to pay someone at the dry cleaners to do it. I just filled out my paperwork today and tomorrow it will be mailed in. I LOVE my job but it is not loving me. I deliver mail on a rural route and we just became an Amazon drop and I cannot and do not want to do that every day. It is beyond my strength and vehicle capacity. So at 62 I am done. I worry about my body falling apart. I worry about loneliness as I live far out in the boondocks and away from things I love (art galleries etc). But I will figure it out. I will have time to take care of me and figure out who I am and I look forward to that.

Not even sure I know what it means; yet few people would say I have an exciting life, relatively speaking. By the way, thanks for your realism, my day is coming soonish. I will be taking my savings (no fancy investments or anything of that nature) to a certain small town, as has been my dream since childhood. Thinking about retiring at 65 in January, but not really wanting to do a hard stop. I talked to my employer and they have offered me the option to work part time as long as I'd like at my current hourly rate. Hoping that the limits will go up enough in 2025 to allow me to do about 10 hours a week without any hit to benefits. At that hourly rate combined with SS benefits I will come pretty close to my net monthly amount now, as I've been putting a good amount into my 401(K) thus don't see it. Two hours a morning, then time for the fun stuff seems like a great solution, but only time will tell. My husband will follow 6 months later, God willing. He's got a pension which will help along with his Social Security, so we should not need to touch either of out retirement accounts in the beginning at least.
Thanks for your posts - always interesting.

The way I handle retirement is I do projects on weekdays and weekends I meet friends. This helps me keep track of days.
I don't understand boredom, I always find something to do. I just found a washing machine for free and am working on it. After I fix it I could even sell it for money. Now that I am retired I can take my time to repair it. I have ordered a tool to fix it. I will slowly fix it.
Meetup with others and make friends. A group of us are working on bulk food buys to lower food costs. The Amish has a discount store and we split food and transportation expenses. We go and enjoy the day together and lower food costs. Another friend picks up worm castings for my garden when he picks up his and when he drops them off we talk about things.

I agree and I've read a lot of headstones. When I visit my family in the local cemetery I adopted a guy named Leroy who passed at only 53. The reason I adopted him, decorate his grave, is because the month of February was spelled wrong. I pointed it out to the cemetery salesman who stopped to say hi and he couldn't believe a mistake like that could be made. He passed in the late 1950's. I like to believe that he had them do it on purpose to catch someone's eye and it worked! Anyway, way off subject. Lol. Buzz

Fingers also crossed that the amount of income we have to live on should be the same as what we've been living on. I go to San Diego not too often to restock gringo food, and anything else I can’t get here.
I shopped at Smart & Final in Rosarito Beach Mexico yesterday, paid a premium for “imported” (from California) items out of stock in San Diego. (Sriracha, Tapatio, dill pickle chips). Imported from Greece kalamata olives, not actually more expensive than San Diego.

I have way too many hobbies to get bored! Get a life! Get rid of the boob tube! Go outside! Enjoy not having to answer to anyone! Life is the best it can be! Have fun!

@@silentnot4812 I'll answer. In my case, metal detecting, gardening, home improvement projects, telescope at night, fishing in river and lake Erie, hiking the trails in the Emerald necklace of the Cleveland suburbs, reading, learning from UA-cam, volunteering at the dog kennel, selling on eBay or marketplace, golfing, shooting range, pickle ball, disc golf, playing musical instruments and whatever else you can envision.
