Go Kart Turbo Install! | Turbo Drift Kart Build
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 жов 2018
- In this video we put a Turbo on the 60's go kart! What we needed to do was make a turbo manifold, oil system, and electrical system to make sure the turbo could run completely autonomously, that way when we hook it up to the engine, we would know that there were no issues on the turbo side of things.
Before we began the install we filmed some awesome driving footage to get a preliminary test so we could compare before and after the turbo was installed.
Thanks for watching and be sure to stay tuned for this thing making some boost!

Hot exhaust gas aimed straight at the fuel tank... excellent engineering guys!
The problem with putting a turbo on a single cylinder is... there isn't an exhaust stroke every intake stroke. That's why 4 cylinder and above work the best for turbo's. To compensate, you need a real small exhaust turbine and chamber that has a lot of back pressure to keep the turbine spooled up during the intake stroke on a single cylinder. You'd get way more power out of a turbine style belt/chain driven super charger.

@GenderRollsN' honeybutter
Most likely..yes.
Matte Edström ...momma.
Ben Hawke you would be better off with a little smog pump style supercharger
@Matte Edstrom "your"anus
You should probably turn that Waste Gate AWAY from your fuel tank...
Blurgamer 17 Yeah we’re gona build an exhaust in part 2, it’s just for testing purposes right now lol
Well ain't that gonna be...Exhausting.
That's the heater !
@@Blurgamer17 man what the fuck 😭😭😭
YES YES I'm 18 and I'm trying to learn about engines and when me and my 3 brothers were kids we had these go kart with super long hand brakes that would make you spinnn. Seeing this has helped me find a way to take my passions and combine it with my childhood
With such a small turbo you need a oil restecter and mettle or AN lines because those plastic lines will melt when the oil gets to hot and when the turbo gets up to temp as well you should get a oil pressure gauge with a speed controller for the oil pump to control the oil pressure or you will blow out the seals
Watch colin furzes turbo scooter vid and he will explain everything you need to know
I absolutely love what you are doing! Great job guys!
a turbo like that one with a journal bearing needs a oil restrictior as too much pressure will blow it out the seals. Might want to do some research to be safe guys...
Yeah, that’s why we went with a diesel transfer pump, it’s very low pressure but we’ll look into how much it needs exactly. It stopped smoking after we flipped the inlet and outlet though.
Build Break Repeat you also need a vent in the oil system on the return side.
Restictors should generally not be used on journal bearing turbos, ball bearing turbos need restrictors though.
Agreed restrictors in general are a bodge when applied to journal bearing turbos. They actually require oil pressure to function properly in the same way as cam/crank journals. (It will function with lower pressure but be less efficient and wear faster). It might be a dodgy ebay turbo from the start, but I think it's possibly a combination of running the pump with the turbo stationary (the seals are a labyrinth type that uses the rotation to force oil back in) and having a sealed oiling system as well as maybe reverse feeding it to begin with. I know not many have seen good success with single cylinder turbo setups but I think it's possible to make boost, just far less efficiently than with multi cylinder engines, or a mechanically driven supercharger.
Add a cheap oil pressure gauge to verify what pressure the turbo is seeing.
MIT published an article a few years back on turbo charging single cylinder engines. Google it. You need to add an air capacitor in between the turbo and carb to maintain boost. Basically a steel cylnder with a reed valve on the inlet. MIT even gives a equation for calculation volume of the capacitor.
13mm n 1/2" are relatively the same not 12mm fellas. But still very cool project. Keep it up
Your intro is dope
I’ve been waiting and finally it’s here nice job
Looks safe with the dump pipe up against the fuel tank. 😃 Looks cool.
Twin turbo would be so sick!!!
Twin turbos are for V bank engines. Now if he did COMPOUND turbo that would be overkill. Waaay overkill.
@@UnTamedMustang twin engine 1 motor per rear wheel sort of thing is what I mean
@@UnTamedMustangtell that to Nissan, Toyota, and BMW...twin turbo inline 6s...
Go up against cars and cameras' one wheel peel!
jack the car guy they should
When will we see a live axle on the 60s cart
Would be so much better for drifting
One day someone will get a turbo to work to work on a gokart . keep up the good work
i'm taking my attempt at it now.
weather just got a bit colder but i'll be posting on it.
So you didn't connect the exhaust tube in the turbo and the Intake tube in the turbo so its suppose to do a air and exhaust compression which would make more AIR GET sucked in and more air being shot out. So in the combustion chamber your valves will receive more AIR with more OIL and same amount of gas which would make the EXTRA POWER by the compression ratio improving significantly.
You guys are mounting turbo all wrong, for a good drawthrough setup the outlet of the turbo needs to on the bottom pointed down an directly at the intake port to elemintate fuel pooling
I like that statement! Unfortunately i have no other way to mount the turbo down right now.
ua-cam.com/video/fa2EzTVrjHk/v-deo.html
@@UnTamedMustang ya and to verify I don't mean the actual outlet needs to be pointed down the hole that's in the turbo to the outlet needs to be as close to bottom as possible and the outlet will point downhill to the intake port
Enjoyed the video it's fun to figure stuff like that out.
Oh yeah build breaking repeat coming in with video!!!!! #notisquad
Big Thumbs Up for at least trying!
2 engines 1 turbo 😘
It definitely can work. Just not the way you're doing it. Good effort though👍.
Ps fit a bleed valve to lower the oil pressure, that's why the turbo is leaking
A bigger drain line might help the oil stop pushing out of the seals. And or a larger vented reservoir. Any backlog of oil increases your chance of leaking. Turbos oil drains are designed to drain into a crankcase, into an open air void that is vented to atmosphere. Without any stops in between. Backed up oil pushes out seals.
omg been waiting for this!! soo stoked
I'm doing this to except on a john deere mower/kart.
On my channel.
So, So, So, excited to see this I'm definitely going to do this to my go kart if this works
Build . Break . Repeat. Great name. New subscriber.
Are you guys gonna do complete go cart build video? You know, materials to buy, things to account for in planning and fabrication of the frame work and all that. I think you guys could make a pretty good one. Not very many instructional build videos on UA-cam
The cooler should go before the pump the hot oil in that pump cant be good for that plastic pump ,what is the org purpose for that pump it sure dose not look like it's made for hot oil . i now thats not how u should run it but that setup maybe.u might want add a little length and to try to taper ,gradually reduce the exhaust size down before the turbo .the lengtt will give u pressure and the tapper will give u air velocity and help with back press. try adding air capacitor on the intake side its just big space like a plenum on a car it will hold some pressure when the intake vavle is closed .
I lovet I cannot wait for the next video
Awesome bro I can’t wait to put a turbo on my 670
Now that is f*cking awesome
Hey guys. Great protect. You need to challenge the guys over at Cars and Cameras to a race off with thier 1wd nascart. Would make for some intreasting videos. Keep up the great work. Cheers
Love this intro
You never hooked the turbo up....
The exhaust is turning the turbo but you didn’t have the air from the turbo going into your motor.....
So the air is just being pushed around outside for looks.
Thats the funniest shit I have ever seen . When do the attach the inlet ?
What? It's gets pushed back into the cylinder through the exhaust system.
This is a part 1 of the build. Builds take time.
Cool video.Im sure you guys will figure it out and make it work.
The oil pan needs to be way bigger and maybe have a breather on top so there's no pressure in the tank. The oil obviously needs to enter the turbo with pressure, but has to go down without any back pressure (inside that little tank). If theres any kind of restriction in the oil flow out of the turbo it will just pass the seals
holy shit spools
y'all need to link up with the boosted bois
I wish they'd help me put a Honda engine in my TurbStang.
I think this may turn out pretty awesome.Just some repositioning, and change the ducts a bit.Tire Smoke !
I’m going to try and make my own booster go cart... to deal with leaning out the boost is going to run through a secondary carb... i would like to use the boost pressures to control the system and I will hopefully be able to tune it with a pressure regulator in line with the actuator on the second carb...
Man, I wish someone that had a clue how turbos work would give this a try. I don't have time right now but everything you you're doing wrong and how to fix it I commented on when cars and cameras tried to do theirs. Short version on your oil problems- most turbos don't have a real oil seal so when you force too much oil in them it will leak out both sides of the shaft (your dripping out the intake). You need to seriously restrict down the inlet (how much depends on how much oil pressure you have.
Awesome!
Nice!!! OK, you guys need to set up a race with Car and Cameras one wheel peel machine: "World's Fastest 1WD Go Kart" before they go to a live axle set up, and before you perfect the turbo install on yours. Both Karts are similar and it would make for a great race. What do you say, can we make this happen???!! I'm sure we would all love to see it and it would get mad views. Don't make us beg!! lol!! Hell, you could both race single wheel, do the live axle conversion and race again to make it a full event!! Reference Video: ua-cam.com/video/X-jgY6VB9zg/v-deo.html
rey gar cars and cameras has way more too end. And more power too.
Nice pretty cool keep it up
you need to put a restrictor in the top part of the turbo for the oil as it's only supposed to have so much oil pressure
Link or shop name for the turbo ?
Glad to see you watch my videos and i gave you a good idea !
P.S. My turbo's compressor is still bigger :)
Turbine matches the exhaust valve too :p
need a blow through set up for the carby to be pressurized to make any sort of boost
Definitely should consider angling the exhaust away from the fuel tank and if possible the intake forward for better airflow. It may require a longer routing for the intake but take that into consideration
Who else came to add a turbo to their motorized bicycle build?
Your go carts cute my dwarf car is a go cart on steroids with a Honda hurricane cbr 1000
Awesome thanks
Also ditch the internal wastegate and weld the flapper door closed good and tight you dont need it for nothing on that small motor you wont ever get more than 6psi if your lucky. And look for metal headgasket or make one outta copper!!! Dont use paper gasket and use studs so you dont blow the head off if it does actually build boost.
I subscribed cuz i like the content but also u said let er rip tater chip lol im in
Without a doubt - this is one of the best channels on UA-cam.
You need a oil feed restrictor it's just a fitting with a small hole in the inside for oil if it's not enough oil drill the hole a bit bigger you can use brass pipe fittings and tap and die for threads in the turbo hole for oil because I have s better than using a gasket because they can leak. If you get to much oil pressure in the cheap turbo or even a good turbo it will get blow by and dammage the turbo for real!
That style of turbo isn't designed for single cylinder engines as the turbo will slow during compression half of the engine stroke causing major turbo lag. Get a belt or chain driven supercharger/blower.
Cars an camera brought me here 👀
Were did you buy that turbo
kgomotso selwe eBay, it’s called a vz21
No info on the turbo here, searching all over UT to get specs and model numbers?
Should put a relay cut off on the oil pump to the engine that way if oil pressure is lost it cuts motor
Impresionante 👍
Please find a way to make it whizz, bang & pulsate While shooting fire like a scene from Tokyo drift You know Stu tu tu tu tu ....Maby a
Anti reversion chamber With a fuel injector just before the turbo To spool it up with backfire .
Or maybe even just a tapered nozzle forcing higher velocity over the exhaust turbine
One of these days someone is going figure out how make a 212 Do this .. probably the same day a company sells a bolt up 6 speed
1030 PM squad
You may as well get a Honda GX160 fly wheel and charging coils to put in your engine
drive it break it fix it get an aluminum flywheel even the gx160 from a true honda will explode if they remove governor and increase revs
What pump did you get and what cooler
Was the engine bone stock or did it have any internals done to it?
Valve springs, rockers and a lightweight flywheel with governor removed makes a huge difference in power and how fast and high it can rev. Enough to make a mini bike outrun a turbo volvo till top speed is reached on the bike
I'd love to see a submarine go kart
Warped Power popped a turbo on a 5hp Briggs. You may want to see this.
epic
Could you tell me what all parts you used to put the turbo on
The frame of the kart looks real similar to cars and cameras nas kart go kart frame.
It's a common frame.
Unlike mine which is a john deere ! :)
As you'll see on my channel :p
Try to fit both of the carburetors and see whats best for turbisetup. I have similar projects and im hungry for some results
That's what i'm doing now. I'm getting use to the cold weather now.
p.s. my turbo is bigger than his aand it matches my exhaust side.
Ya'll need to rig this kart up with a CVT. You'll get a slightly faster spool out of your turbo.
Go get your twin Engine mount it run 1 carb for the both engines and keep it single turbo try that or buy a vtwin and turbo it. Might be cheaper
I also noticed you have an internal wastegate do you know if the internal wastegate is open or closed with or without vacuum
Where did you buy the turbo and the materials for it? I’ve been wanting to do this but can’t find the parts
The turbo is a vz21 and can be found on eBay or amazon, the engine parts and carb are from Gopowersports, the oil pump is an oil transfer pump from amazon, you should try to find one that operates around 40 psi
You need to use better lines then that crap some proper heat resistant stuff, you need a restricted oil feed line put a plate over the feed gasket to the turbo and drill a 1m hole in it and leave it in there ya want the feed oil restricted to 1m or you can jam a carb jet in the feed line to the turbo.shorten the lines as much as possible and ya got the exhaust housing blowing onto the tank move the thing around so the intake hosing is forward and yes make sure the retune is at the bottom as you said clocked correctly
u need very low amount of oil and u need to rotate that turbo because u will get too much back pressure when kart is moving and air goes in to exhaust outlet in turbo...
Pretty pretty hemi predator.
your oil return might be too small, or not a straight enough shot into the return tank, or the oil tank may even need a vent. i say run it draw through, unless it doesnt have carbon seals.
Which turbocharger is that can you please tell the name.and model
did u see an increase in top speed / acceleration with the mikuni carb?
What size turbo and where does one get one
Lol turbo on a single cylinder
A lot of effort for lower performance adding a turbo you such a small motor. More weight and exhuast restriction is all your doing so it's gonna be slower. It'll never make any boost. Seen one channel put the same turbo on a dirtbike engine gocart and with a 3-400 cc's in it had and 6 gears it made it slower and only made 2 lbs of boost after it was revved at full throttle for a few seconds. Need a motor with more than one cylinder and even then it might not be enough to be worth it. Have fun messing around with it though but I doubt you'll even hear any turbo noises
Grind Hard Plumbing??
@@elesjuan Yeah. Idk exactly what size motor they have it could be smaller than I guessed but if you've seen one of their recent videos you saw how it wasn't really adding any power. And they're motor had a lot more power than just the 5 hp of the Briggs that this gocart has on it. Don't get me wrong it would've been bad ass if it worked but just didn't seem to. You'd need a turbo about half the size them maybe it would help a little.
What You think about putting an V2 4t in go kart?? 470cc V2 briggs with 28hp....if You want its on my chanel. Greetings from Poland
What turbo did y’all use link please
I'm doing a similar build. Wont make much for boost. But it'll make wishie noises. Lol
You guys should grab a old Honda CBR 1000 mkterbike engine would go like a bat out of hell
how many hp does this turbo gives?
Lets just say it does make boost..fuel and air is perfect.
You are missing one CRUCIAL part of what keeps a turbocharged engine from exploding. I have not mention what that is in any of my videos.
Glad to see i inspired you though.
Have fun .
"one CRUCIAL part of what keeps a turbocharged engine from exploding." Forged connecting rods? That always seems to be why mine assplode...
Nope. It isnt anything mechanical.
Now im not saying it wont make boost..because it wlll. Just dont go too crazy with it. I want to see 4 or 5psi happen.
Are you keeping this a secret?
No , just Highly Classified. To my viewers and subbers. Even they will need to wait.
What's the fastest you have had this thing!?? Mph
To much oil pressure. Need a ristrictor in the oil inlet and a free flowing oil outlet from the turbo.
Also when you start to routing your intake, its easier to bolt your carburator to the the turbo inlet. That way the carburator still functions normal.
And were did you get the oil radiator kit and pump i would really love to know
Where did you get the cooler and pump at? Idk where to even look
same
The oil pump is pushing too much pressure thats why the oil is pressed threw the seal
12mm and 1/2 are not basically the same. 13mm and 1/2 are
It was leaking oil bekaise the seal will not work until the shaft of the turbo spins.
