Xbox is going to make the next version of Call of Duty available day 1 for Game Pass subscribers...which is a huge gamble, until you breakdown the numbers.
#Brad Sams that's not the right way to say the numbers. Sir you see you will not only get call of duty that month more games come that month and you don't pay 18$ for call of duty on gamepass if there are 400 games on gamepass you pay 22.2 cent for call of duty you pay 18$ for all games per month on gamepass

There are probably some internal metrics behind this decision. Consider that most CoD players already play online multiplayer, which you have to pay for. The cost of an all in one premium tier subscription and Game Pass Core plus buying CoD full price is probably not as great as people think. What Xbox think is that once they try the service they'll be hooked.

People seem to be surprised this is Happening! When from the Start of the Purchase we said COD will be in Gamepass, we just didn’t realize it would be this soon I thought it would have been next year since next year will be Xbox’s Official first COD they would make themselves since this one was in production for 3 years!

Brad. You guys keep forgetting that there are *TREE tiers* of GamePass. • GamePass Core: ($10.00/mo) • GamePass Console/ PC: ($11/mo) • GamePass Ultimate: ($17/mo) Call of Duty is likely going to be in Tier 2 and Tier 3. Not just Tier 3.
@@xmusic2049 To be fair, the multiplayer is multiplayer. But the campaign has always been single-player. There are a very, very, *VERY small* portion of the CoD community that only plays the campaigns. But they are there. Still, I see your point, though. I don't disagree with you at all.
I think one of the major factors you've missed here is microtransactions. If they can get another 2-5 million more of their current GP subscribers into CoD (who wouldn't purchase it) buying microtransactions then that's huge.
If they use Game Pass for COD won't they stay in it for a few months to play it against people online? This will cut the needed amount of subscribers. So if 3 million new sign ups happen and stay for 4 months(through the holidays) there's your 12 million 'months' to offset the initial cost.
Plus, putting COD in GP allows Xbox to spend less on 3rd party games for GP. There’s less need to license 3rd party content when they put more 1st party that stays on the service indefinitely.
Hey, Brad. Would be interesting to also consider the amount of MTX revenue in your calculation. If you look back at ABK financials you see how MTX made up more than half of their revenue and it was growing. Will be interesting to see if Game Pass brings in folks who spend more on battlepasses and MTX.
People may also sub for a month and then end up purchasing the game. Also with more bangers dropping this year it gives reason to stay subbed. There are alot of variables. I hope we get a peek at the data
It's _not_ just the Xbox console sales they'd have to recoup, but the PC sales too. So the $200M figure you're tossing around in your napkin math, you need to actually be using the $700M figure. (PC Game Pass is a thing) Breaking even at month 3 -- at the $200M figure, means 3.9M sign-ups; but at the $700M figure, means 13.7M sign-ups.
I couple things. The curve of how many people will stay past 1 month needs to be taken into account. As more months go by the amount of COD day 1 sign upers will slowly decrease. Also as far as the Battlepass goes since that is directly tied into Warzone which is free to play its not as clean cut as the battlepass will make people be forced to stay in gamepass. It will be interesting to see how this goes, I think alot of it hinges on how good the game is. If this game is a big hit this will be a massive success for gamepass if not it will still make money (sheep will always buy no matter what) but it won't set a good precedent for the future.
No I don’t think so, it’ll be on GP Ultimate and it’ll likely go up. Because COD is one of the biggest franchises in the world and a lot of people still play it, even though a whole lot of people have turned their back on the franchise. It still has a big fanbase and we know people will continue to buy it, unless Activision really screw’s up big time on some stuff.
Missed marketing opportunities imho, back catalogue should’ve been added to draw crowds & hype for CoD6. Oddly dragged their heels here in adding ABK. Not just new subs are significant, as those now not having to pay $70, will spend in game. Which will be huge for the service. Not forgetting extra sales from all the new contracts for CoD, which were never available previously. Time to buckle up & polish up on your helicopter training buddy.
L O L Amy Hood said they projected consoles sales to decline further. Phil said they can’t our console Sony or Nintendo. They said this knowing this game was going into GP.
One variable you didn't take into account is that every Game Pass sign up from a PlayStation or PC user will reduce the sales by the same amount on their respective platforms.
There's many factors to consider. Simply having them choose your platform has many benefits including an extra 30% of revenue from microtransactions + battlepasses from COD, as well as them possibly spending money on other games from their store.
All Xbox has to do is charge 50 bucks for three weeks of early access for Game Pass subscribers basically what they did with Starfield but on crack, and they'll be golden. Don't forget the other platforms that will also get COD long store short they'll make their money with the right strategy.
The Activision deal, at present, has not benefited Gamepass subscribers yet. In fact, the news since the deal has not provided any positive news at all, but negative news to the brand. So, releasing BO6 to Gamepass would simply provide some good faith to Xbox fans and customers.
I think the only way they lose money is if you would make the assumption that most annual COD players are Game Pass subscribers. This seems unlikely. Game Pass also has the added benefit of marketing through users. We really don’t have enough information to make any judgment and for all we know the risk is very low compared to the public perception.
Supposedly, 51% of the CoD player base is on mobile, 25% on PC, 16% on PS and 8% on Xbox. This obviously shows all flavors, so if you eliminate the mobile game, then about 50% are on PC, 32% on PS and 16% on Xbox (rounding errors/rough math). That still includes Warzoone, but it validates your estimate of PS being twice that of Xbox. It's also interesting to note that for PS the split is 48% PS4 to 52% PS5, so about 8% of CoD players are on PS4. It also highlights that a good chunk of players don't see a need to upgrade to PS5. Maybe they'll bite on PS5 Pro, but I doubt that many will.
😂 i actually had like 7 subscriptions that i didn't really use at one point. I think Microsoft knows most people don't cancel subscriptions so once they get you in, you're in. $17/month is $204/year. Meaning you're paying full price for 3 games per year. I never bought 3 games per year besides my usual Madden, NBA 2k, and 1 AAA game per year. Now i still have to buy Madden, NBA 2k and game pass. I'm spending more money and basically trying new games that i would never buy.
They already taking the biggest gamble by releasing their games on rival platforms and risk losing their storefront which brings in 50% of their revenue.
It's not just sign ups but getting people to play on the xbox ecosystem. A lot of the money COD brings in comes from the microtransactions if someone that has both PS and Xbox buys it on PS microsoft looses 30% of those purchases. This should likely get several million people who own both consoles to switch from PS to Xbox for those microtransactions.
I paid for Game Pass Ultimate until 2027.😊 Most Playstation gamers will stay on Playstation. Most PC gamers will stay on Steam. Everyone on Xbox won't play via Game Pass. They will also support Nintendo going forward. Another thing that needs to be accounted for is microtransactions. You aren't going to get every DLC and microtransaction content via Game Pass. It may free up Game Pass subscribers to spend on it though. Another thing to consider is that the inclusion into Game Pass will also attract new gamers to COD. I don't usually don't buy COD every year, so I'm not always playing COD. This is going to get me to play more COD.
50% of playstation players who play CoD as still playing on PS4, who's to say that maybe CoD on GP is not enticing enough to make people make the jump to series S? I would assume they are still on PS4 due to financial reasons and graphics don't really justify the cost so, series S is cheap enough, it has GP and CoD so, maybe there's s point to be maybe with this strategy.
They need to do a few things quick fast and in a hurry 1. get rid of the $1 for 14 days trial, that will be used and abused at launch. 2. get battlenet integrated and rebranded, and also tie in activision friends into xbox, so pc people can stay on that if they choose and it will be easy for them to keep on buying/subbing for it 3. a few strategic leaks of bundles for SX and SS upcoming should boost sales as well as subs.
@@fred420 on the thumbnail brad showed it said $1 for 14 days. I havent' signed up in years so I didn't bother to verify it. I just went and looked and on the GP signup page it still says 14 days for $1. that needs to go away before cod launch
The real gamble would've been Xbox going back on their word and keeping 1st party releases off Gamepass day 1 🤯COD making a billion sure doesn't happen on Xbox game sales alone. Playstation sales will be roughly the same give or take the same goes for PC sales 🤷🏻♂️ many Xbox gamers will still buy COD and the Gamepass subs will definitely see a large jump and many of those people will likely stay subscribed to Gamepass and can't forget the microtransactions 🤑
But Gamepass is also on PC so you have to take into account also that market not just xbox, and CoD players on xbox for the most part already pay for at least Gamepass Core.
The GamePass Core audience isn't going to count because they wouldn't have access to those games. The only two tiers on console that do are the GamePass Console and GamePass Ultimate tiers. GamePass Console is for single-player Xbox Gamers. GamePass Ultimate is for both single-player *and* Multiplayer Xbox Gamers. And, chances are, if you are getting a Call of Duty game, you're getting it for the multiplayer. So, any GamePass Core holder that wants Call of Duty is very likely either going to buy it outright or upgrade to GamePass Ultimate.
@@BrotherKnowledge. my point was an xbox cod player that subscribes to ultimate is not an aditional 17 bucks in microsoft's cofers but only 7 because they likely come from gamepass core.
Most of the money from cod is the mtx it does. Any loss in sales of the game will be made up through mtx, new game pass subs, and any hardware they sell because of the COD marketing.
Surprisingly you, like every other journalist, are forgetting call of duty will be day one on PC Gamepass also. That's a much bigger potential profit risk than the tiny player base on Xbox. And PC gamepass only costs $10 per month making the recoup more challenging as well.
It isn’t really much of a gamble…let’s say 25% (not likely at all) of those PS sales go to Xbox for GamePass in additions to players already on GamePass, the boost in hardware would justify it. Also, no one isn’t going to sign up for CoD for only one month….that would totally not match the data on how ppl play CoD games. They buy it throughout the year.
I can see an xbox x and s, ps5 and pc version. Cut out ps4 and try and get some of that 60 million active ps4 users to either jump to pc or jump to xbox or they could all move to ps5 thus buying more ps5 blops6 copies
Would be funny if PlayStation centric Call of Duty players dont gravitate towards GamePass for Call of Duty, but the typical Xbox person does, causing a huge loss for Xbox lol. If my guess happens, i think the leaders of the Xbox will finally realize that too many core console gamers dont want to get into the Xbox platform.
It has been proven that Xbox gamers don't buy Xbox games anymore. Xbox gamers getting Call of Duty via GamePass that they already subscribed to means Call of Duty lost $60-$70 a pop from millions of Xbox users. GamePass is going to kill more Xbox studios.
Seems like a really far too simplistic calculation. Microsoft have stated that gamepass encourages higher spending from players. So out of the 34 million gamepass members they will be hoping that many will pay for a premium edition upgrade that will no doubt have early access to the game. I also don't think you can say that the people who stay subscribed can be counted as forever paying for the first game they played on gamepass. For example, if you join for blackops you are likely to play other games as well and those other games have to be paid for. This is definitely a gamble and an experiment for Microsoft. They are doing it this one time to see what happens. They are really trying to see if they can shake up the industry and find a new winning formula that resonates with the total gaming community driving massive growth. It is going to be fascinating to see what happens
...until you put it on Game Pass and people can join for 15 euro, rather than 60-70. Get it out of their system for a month or two, and from a jumping off point explore more games on the sevice and potentially keep it going. They may even be more willing to pay for microtransactions or battle passes if they do not pay for the full game.

Ohhhh... yeah. That makes way more sense. My bad, man.
Most of COD’s revenue comes from mobile
It isn’t really much of a gamble…let’s say 25% (not likely at all) of those PS sales go to Xbox for GamePass in additions to players already on GamePass, the boost in hardware would justify it. Also, no one isn’t going to sign up for CoD for only one month….that would totally not match the data on how ppl play CoD games. They buy it throughout the year.
The game hast to be really good otherwise i think this decision will be really bad
Even at its worst CoD is has been the best or second best selling game each year since 2010.
@@thaneros yeah i guess it will always sell due to the lack of competitors
@@hellwire4582 Usually when a Rockstar game drops CoD goes down to number two
@@thaneros it will come out this year not 2025
Call of Duty on Game Pass won’t sell Xboxes.
Im not buying gamepass ultimate just for cod! Cod era is gone now! And if im wrong i can just buy it!
Why would that be a huge loss when they are selling anyways?
It has been proven that Xbox gamers don't buy Xbox games anymore. Xbox gamers getting Call of Duty via GamePass that they already subscribed to means Call of Duty lost $60-$70 a pop from millions of Xbox users. GamePass is going to kill more Xbox studios.
gameS pass
The elephant in the room is that cod doesn't sell well on xbox
It's not just on Xbox. You know that right?
Then it's no loss to put it in GP.
...until you put it on Game Pass and people can join for 15 euro, rather than 60-70. Get it out of their system for a month or two, and from a jumping off point explore more games on the sevice and potentially keep it going. They may even be more willing to pay for microtransactions or battle passes if they do not pay for the full game.
@mgpdevil exactly, and that's why it's a good thing to pit it on gp. Pretty much they have nothing to lose
This is a big gamble no doubt. Phil Spencer is trying to get new game pass subscribers. If this doesn’t do it, I don’t know what will

Very true, Bitcoin is moving crazy these few weeks, I'm back in 😀
not good idea , should be release on every plattform to buy first to get the money in than put it on gamepass months later
@Brad Sams,
You and Shawn Layden have No Idea how Game Pass Works and definitely have Zero Clue of The Microsoft Business Methodology.
People sometimes forget -
They only got 20% from the sales of cod before the acquisition.
Now they get
80 % from the millions of PlayStation sales
All the mtx sales
All the sales from PC users
All the sales from xbox users that don't use game pass
They're not losing out at all by doing this.
They are also going to no doubt gain tons of new users through game pass..
Series s at £150 with all them cods?.... Kids will lap it up come Xmas
first?
Your math's is off way off
Brad listen. Cod on gamepass day and date is absolutely mind blowing and it's so awesome that this is happening!
There's a lot of gamers out there that just can't afford to buy games even if they are on sale at a big/small discount!
Now alot of gamers can play cod without having to pay that $70 upfront cost!
Brad stop painting a NEGATIVE Picture to fit a NEGATIVE NARRATIVE!
COD ON GAMEPASS IS ABSOLUTELY GREAT FOR XBOX GAMERS!
Failstation already dead anyway 😂
Non story. down vote.
If it was literally just about the story I get that. But he's breaking down the numbers, getting into it. People do this for sports all the time.
