    Are there any foods you used to eat as a child, but hardly ever eat now? What one meal would you like to try again now?

      Oh, and by the way, with some dried Italian herbs and a tin of tomatoes this ended up making a great lasagna sauce - kids said it was the best lasagna they ever had 😂

      My dad made the best stuffed bell peppers, I loved them. He died when I was 21 and till this day I missed thoses peppers... I can cook by myself, but it is simply not the same...

      That's a really young age to lose a parent, must have been tough Jessi. I think a lot of foods from childhood taste better because of the memories associated with them, and even with the same recipe don't seem as good in adulthood. I definitely cannot make an apple crumble that tastes as good as the one my Mum made when I was a kid that's for sure!

    My mum used to make a very simple version of this, just mince, onion, boiled potatoes, peas and Oxo gravy and I absolutely loved it, this video brought the memories flooding back ☺

      We used to have this (or similar) quite a lot when I was a kid, but I simply never made it as an adult. Last year my Mum was seriously ill, so myself and my sister were looking after her, and one evening she asked if I could make it for her dinner. Just made it in a pan rather than in the slow cooker, but like yourself it brought those childhood memories back. Funny how food can do that!

    Up until about 5 years ago Asda did a really good savoury mince packet mix . It was so easy to make, just browned the mince and chuck in carrot and peas plus the mix and liquid and leave to simmer for about 20 mins. Then they stopped doing it. Schwartz do a packet mix too but unfortunately they are not stocked in my local supermarkets

    • @GreenoEats
      @GreenoEats  5 місяців тому

      Packet mix for this would be so easy, although I guess it’s not that complicated a recipe to make from scratch either. I’ll be making it again, but maybe at a time when Mrs Greeno isn’t home 🤣

    I really love a good Goulasch 😊😊 I have a slow cooker by myself, but I used it only once and it was not my favourit kind of cooking. And I really love a good Bolognese with carrots, cellery, onions and half a bottle of red wine 😂

    • @GreenoEats
      @GreenoEats  5 місяців тому +1

      Oh yeah Goulash (English spelling for me 😂) Or Gyulas as Mrs Greeno would call it is delicious. In the UK it was always served as a saucy kind of dish, with rice or similar. Of course the traditional is a soup. Either is good for me. I think the slow cooker treats certain foods better than others. Lean meat like chicken is not good, but fattier meats like lamb, or pork shoulder go well, with the fat cooking out slowly. I often make a bolognese in one though, it can sit all day with the flavours working together nicely.

    We used to get savoury mince at school with cobblers on the top. It seemed to have a hint of curry in it but I have tried to make it numerous times but it never tastes as good as the school dinner did. The cobblers were basically like plain scones but smaller. Dryer than dumplings but so tasty. 👍

    • @GreenoEats
      @GreenoEats  5 місяців тому +1

      I remember having something similar, a kind of mince curry… essentially savoury mince with some generic curry powder and a handful of sultanas thrown in… the height of 70s cuisine 🤣 Those cobblers sound decent!
