@@SkaldfraNorden I've always had a problem with that part of the song. It makes no mention of the eight crippling wounds Fingolfin inflicted on Morgoth, or of the fact that Morgoth was terrified of his challenge, instead making it seem like Fingolfin was only a nuisance easily dispatched. There really should have been an entire verse about the actual fight.
We were thinking about a good way of saying it. Obviously, no disrespect intended, but reading Tolkien's notes, it seems that he thought of himself as a historian describing that world.
"Now news came to Hithlum that Dorthonion was lost and the sons of Finarfin overthrown, and that the sons of Fëanor were driven from their lands. Then Fingolfin beheld... the utter ruin of the Noldor, and the defeat beyond redress of all their houses; and filled with wrath and despair he mounted upon Rochallor his great horse and rode forth alone, and none might restrain him. He passed over Dor-nu-Fauglith like a wind amid the dust, and all that beheld his onset fled in amaze, thinking that Oromë himself was come: for a great madness of rage was upon him, so that his eyes shone like the eyes of the Valar. Thus he came alone to Angband's gates, and he sounded his horn, and smote once more upon the brazen doors, and challenged Morgoth to come forth to single combat. And Morgoth came. That was the last time in those wars that he passed the doors of his stronghold, and it is said that he took not the challenge willingly; for... alone of the Valar he knew fear. But he could not now deny the challenge before the face of his captains; for... Fingolfin named Morgoth craven.... Therefore Morgoth... issued forth clad in black armour; and he stood before the King like a tower, iron-crowned, and his vast shield, sable unblazoned, cast a shadow over him like a stormcloud. But Fingolfin gleamed beneath it as a star; for his mail was overlaid with silver, and his blue shield was set with crystals; and he drew his sword Ringil, that glittered like ice. Then Morgoth hurled aloft Grond, the Hammer of the Underworld, and swung it down like a bolt of thunder. But Fingolfin sprang aside, and Grond rent a mighty pit in the earth.... Many times Morgoth essayed to smite him, and each time Fingolfin leaped away...; and he wounded Morgoth with seven wounds, and seven times Morgoth gave a cry of anguish, whereat the hosts of Angband fell upon their faces in dismay, and the cries echoed in the Northlands. But at the last the King grew weary, and Morgoth bore down his shield upon him. Thrice he was crushed to his knees, and thrice arose again and bore up his broken shield and stricken helm. But the earth was all... pitted about him, and he stumbled and fell backward before the feet of Morgoth; and Morgoth set his left foot upon his neck.... Yet with his last and desperate stroke Fingolfin hewed the foot with Ringil, and the blood gushed forth black and smoking and filled the pits of Grond. Thus died Fingolfin, High King of the Noldor, most proud and valiant of the Elven-kings of old." Best fantasy fight ever.
I always interpreted that Fingolfin died from drowning in and being burned by Morgoth's blood, rather than his neck being broken. Seems way more badass to me that he died from the blood of his enemy due to the wounds he inflicted. Also with the way Tolkien worded it, the last thing he talks about is the pit being filled with Morgoth's blood, and then thus Fingolfin died, rather than hewing Morgoth's foot as he died from a broken neck. I would imagine it would be difficult to summon the strength to inflict such a grievous injury to the most powerful of the Valar with a broken neck. Morgoth would also have been likely to take weight off of his injured foot, decreasing the burden on Fingolfin. Fingolfin can't escape the pit because what was left of his strength was spent on the blow to Morgoth's foot. But to me there never seemed to be any indication that Morgoth broke his neck, rather than Morgoth intended to further humiliated Fingolfin by crushing his body with his foot, which he fails to accomplish, likely due to the foot injury, as you cannot break an already broken and crushed body. Being burned and drowned by Morgoth's blood causing the demise of Fingolfin also creates a parallel to the death of Gilgalad, whose body was burnt and charred by the hand of Sauron.

@@stephenkenney8290 Yes though like Feanor before him did Fingolfin really need to go off by himself with no support at all? All the children and grandchildren of the original High King of the Noldor show they have the power to kill Balrogs (who are full Maiar) and, in Fingolfin's case, wound Morgroth while also being able to (in Maedrhos case literally) single handily massacre thousands of orcs. If they had just focussed that power in one combined strike (like the White Council did against the Necromancer of Dol Guldor) they might have stood a chance or at least inflicted such a defeat that Morgroth would be so wounded as to maybe flee. Watching these first age epics makes me want to get a copy of the Silmarillion. Unfortunately, last I checked, doesn't it have a reputation of having a rather difficult entry barrier for those not versed in Tolkien lore?
I recommend reading it! It reads differently than the LotR, and rather like a history. You do have to remember a lot of different characters, but even if that is a difficulty it’s more than worth it. Rather than having a barrier, I would say that reading the Silmarillion is a great way to learn the lore. However, if you can get yourself a Tolkien dictionary, that might help as well. Best of luck!
i just finished the Silmarillion in spite of being told the same thing. However, armed with a familiarity with Tolkien lore (thanks in no small part to people like Wizards and Warriors) it's really not that hard to follow.
Having a map of Beleriand and the Elven and Edainic family trees on hand will make it a breeze as far as geography and character density is concerned. Once those boxes are checked you can simply enjoy the vastness and scale of the Prof's "old world".

i find this concept really cool of delivering lore as a documentary im enjoying it a lot. this might be a bit weird but maybe something to consider as another thing that might be cool: maybe make documentaries about clan wars in video games? like something like eve online sometimes has wars that are absolutely massive with lots of things involved that could suit this style too and might be interesting to look into if its a feasible possibility
In the fight against the Darkness, arise Mighty Warriors, from their ranks shine Great Heroes, leading them in battle, stride Glorious Champions. But above them all, walked Fingolfin. The Elf that challenged and wounded an Evil God! His like shall never be surpassed, his deeds shall never be forgotten.
The fact that Fingolfin managed to pierce Morgoth’s leg while on his own back after being finally beaten with three hits from Grond’s hammer head has got to show that he is the most consummate elf warrior of all time. Also Dagor Bragollach showed the first alliance of Elves and Men to be more than a match for the Forces of Darkness. EDIT: The holding out in the various passes south of Thangorodrim and the inevitable counterattack from the elves and men that show the level of cooperation and successful military operations that the alliance between the two races can procure.
Thank you so much. I just finished the Silmarillian and these videos really help with internalizing the history. Any other Tolkien books that you would recommend?
As if the battle wasn’t Epic enough, then Thorondor gets one last hit in before fleeing with Fingolfin’s body…..Tolkien is unmatched in his storytelling….Period.
The Fingolfin/Morgoth fight is a sort of ironic reversal of the curse placed by God on the serpent in the book of Genesis. "Though ye shall bite his heel, he shall crush thy head"
11:46 I thought the single flashing frame was some kind of subliminal message or tidbit of information, but alas just a Media offline message??? haha how weird...
08:43 Orodreth was not the son of Finarfin. He was the grandson of Finarfin, and the son of Angrod, according to The Peoples of Middle Earth. Christopher Tolkien mistakenly made him the son of Finrod in The Silmarillion, and the son of Finarfin Unfinished Tales.
"The war seemed so very far away. When he went to it I teased him about his armor not fitting properly. I called him a silver clam...I never saw him again."
The start of the episode reminds a little of the gas attacks of the first world war, doesn't it? I am wondering now if Tolkien ever witnessed the result of such an attack or even survived one.

your work made the 1st age epicness alive to me for the first time , i really enjoy your clips and admire the efforts you put to deliver such Quality .. keep up kind sir .
Thank you .
Wow! Morgoth hit the exiles so hard it knocked their Media Offline.
The First Age was crazy and epic!
First Age is the main story. Lotr adventure is nothnig but a sidequest compared to it.
Watching these first age epics makes me want to get a copy of the Silmarillion. Unfortunately, last I checked, doesn't it have a reputation of having a rather difficult entry barrier for those not versed in Tolkien lore?
It is... different. But after you read the very beginning, it becomes a bit easier. Still, many names to remember.
It's worth it--just get ready to navigate finrod, fingolfin, feanor, finwe, minwe, finarfin, angrod, agnor, etc Turn, Turgon, etc etc.
Having a map of Beleriand and the Elven and Edainic family trees on hand will make it a breeze as far as geography and character density is concerned. Once those boxes are checked you can simply enjoy the vastness and scale of the Prof's "old world".
Great video. You guys really know how to tell a story. Noticed a weird frame at 11:46 in case you want to correct it if that's even possible.
Unfortunately, it is not :-(
@@WizardsandWarriors Your vids are still amazing :)
Amazing video, so well constructed. Just so your aware guys theres a small flick of "Media Offline' message at 11:46 you may want to edit out. Thanks for the hard work!
AGH! I love these epic stories of the first age. And it will get only more desperate. but not to despair since even in the darkest of time the clear shining of the stars will remain
Just want to show my appreciation for this video series. I'm sure it takes a ton of work, so I'm grateful
another tolkien video and my evening is immediately better
thank you guys! I love these animations and narration and appreciate the amount of lore stuffed into these videos considering necessity of oversimplification required by this format
The elves knew about the dragon because glaurung before becoming of age attacked the elves without orders from morgorh but the elves shot him because his armor wasnt that developed yet
Maybe you can cover the fall of Gondolin. Pls and thank you 🙏
*Morgoth: I fear no man nor elf, but THAT elf (points to Fingolfin)…he scares me!* 😰🧝♂️
This is so much better than the amazon LOTR
Bcs its original :) Silmalirion one of the best pieces that i read, highly recommended
This documentary series is brilliant and one of the best. We always appreciate your hard work and dedication towards these videos. Love from Sri Lanka ❤️🔥❤️
This was gorgeous. Well done.
Fantastic video, I don't know if this would pull enough views but I would love to see videos about battles from Legend of Drizzt
i find this concept really cool of delivering lore as a documentary im enjoying it a lot.
this might be a bit weird but maybe something to consider as another thing that might be cool: maybe make documentaries about clan wars in video games? like something like eve online sometimes has wars that are absolutely massive with lots of things involved that could suit this style too and might be interesting to look into if its a feasible possibility
Fingolfin one of the greatest warriors middle earth has ever seen. So epic.
Subtle foreshadowing in mentioning unnumbered tears, great video.
A bit on the nose for those in the know, but I don't have anything against it. Great video!
And thus came the end of the Best Elf. But it also was the best end!!
Thank you so much for covering the first age. I can’t wait till unnumbered tears!!
this series is getting harder and harder
Just wait until the Battle of Unnumbered Tears
i feel like these videos never show up in my suggestions even though i am subscribed. true shame considering how well crafted these videos are
Video I hope to see in the future:
Soul Reaver.
Fingolfin was a freaking gigachad man!!!
Great video, please also continue the Elder scrolls
In the fight against the Darkness, arise Mighty Warriors, from their ranks shine Great Heroes, leading them in battle, stride Glorious Champions.
But above them all, walked Fingolfin. The Elf that challenged and wounded an Evil God!
His like shall never be surpassed, his deeds shall never be forgotten.
I love seeing these videos, thank you wizard and warriors for making such great content.
11:46 for a split second 'Media Offline' in numerous languages is spliced in. Just for everyone wondering if they saw something flash on screen.
Absolutely brilliant. My only reservation is the artwork elves having pointy Vulcan ears which detracts from their heroic nature
"With only Valar to provide solace" > "With only Valor to provide solace."
Anyone else pause it at exactly 11:46 to see the easter egg?
12:44 He is the best. ❤
Amazing as always!
on the Volcano Eruption in this episode
banned
Perfection
This is morphin in the format of a video 😂. Spectacular as were the previous episodes. Keep up this excellent work please!!
11:46 someone messed up
The fact that Fingolfin managed to pierce Morgoth’s leg while on his own back after being finally beaten with three hits from Grond’s hammer head has got to show that he is the most consummate elf warrior of all time.
Wizards and Warriors once again putting Amazon Studios to shame. Bravo!
Cool. Very entertaining.
Imagine being Fingolfin and walking up to Angband and challenging Morgoth to single combat.
Fantastic video. Thank you.
Thank you so much. I just finished the Silmarillian and these videos really help with internalizing the history. Any other Tolkien books that you would recommend?
The Children of Hurin, no doubt.
All of them.
Thank u. You're videos are great. The next battle is the most amazing of Tolkien´s world. 😁 Im wating for it.
Is nobody gonna talk about the many new valleys that were created from Fingolfin dragging those huge balls all the way to Angband?
Any moment we get closer to Ancalagon is a good day...
Ancalagon’s name appears once in the entire Silmarillion. He’s an extremely minor part of all of this.
What an epic fight
Tears unnumbered ye shall shed
11:46 "media offline" in a lot of languages lol :)
Lol
Last time I was this early, Maedhros was still chained in Angband
excellent look forward to more
The eagles man, the eagles, if only they could help a bit more lol.
Nice work dude thanks
So very interesting. Thank you!
Awesome video! City of Mist actually sounds interesting as well.
I really wish gamesworkshop would do a 1st age and 2nd age middle Earth Strategy Battle Game set and models.
in case anyone is insane like me 11:46 it says media offline in multiple languages
anyone else see that weird premier pro glitch at 11:46
Media offline notification
for a split second. 😅😂 Yeah
I really wish to someday there’ll be a live action series or movie about this😢
Wow that's quite a story.
GREAT VIDEO MATE
any of your videos that don't rely on cloud info; aka fiction or something over 50 years ago: are good.
It's too bad gunpowder wasn't invented during this choatic age.
we also need a clip for beren and lute
As if the battle wasn’t Epic enough, then Thorondor gets one last hit in before fleeing with Fingolfin’s body…..Tolkien is unmatched in his storytelling….Period.
The Fingolfin/Morgoth fight is a sort of ironic reversal of the curse placed by God on the serpent in the book of Genesis. "Though ye shall bite his heel, he shall crush thy head"
I think it’s more likely a reference to George Floyd and BLM
11:46 I thought the single flashing frame was some kind of subliminal message or tidbit of information, but alas just a Media offline message??? haha how weird...
Amazing video
08:43 Orodreth was not the son of Finarfin. He was the grandson of Finarfin, and the son of Angrod, according to The Peoples of Middle Earth. Christopher Tolkien mistakenly made him the son of Finrod in The Silmarillion, and the son of Finarfin Unfinished Tales.
"The war seemed so very far away. When he went to it I teased him about his armor not fitting properly. I called him a silver clam...I never saw him again."
At 11:46 the red flash is an error message saying media offline.
The start of the episode reminds a little of the gas attacks of the first world war, doesn't it? I am wondering now if Tolkien ever witnessed the result of such an attack or even survived one.
The way Morgoth killed Fingolfin reminds me of how Robert Baratheon killed Rhaegar Targayan.
first age human: *spits tooth* i got limited time and a lot of hands to throw!
