I have this exact set up but one thing doesn't add up. Will the 50amp wire that connects my alternator to the the 25a Dcdc (via Anderson plug) be a fire hazard... Because 1-the 25amp dcdc can only take up to 25amp and my alternator battery (800cc) will produce more than 25amp easily? 2 the preattached WIRE that connects to the 25a dcdc to be connected via Anderson to the 50amp wire (that goes to my car battery) be a fire hazard as it's only rated to 25amp capacity???? Thanks
Hi there, Thank you for the comment, I can address both of these for you with an analogy, The DCDC in this setup would act as outlet in a system, and in the same way as a tap in your water system will only allow a specific amount of throughput out of the system, any value above this point will simply just not be parsed, so you wont have any issues with the unit being damaged in this manner. Regards, Andrew
One more question. Sometimes the camper doesn't get used taken away and used for extended periods of time, sporadically every few months. Is there a way I can turn everything off when not using the camper for peace of mind. Turning it off without having to remove the terminals of the 50amp wiring kit from the alternator battery?? Can I say just remove the same fuse from that 50a wire while leaving the terminals connected? AND turning off the axillary battery too when not in use? Will this be safe when not in use instead of having to literally disconnect everything. What would be the safest and most easiest and convenient way to isolate everything when I dnt use it regularly. Thanks Soo much
Excellent vid, thanks. If my battery box setup is going in the caravan, is there a need for the blue ignition wire, if so where would it hook up to? Cheers
Hi there, If you were wanting to have this charged from the alternator of your vehicle and your vehicle had a smart alternator you would need to create an extension for the ignition wire on its own circuit. Cheers, Courtney
My car already had a 12v Anderson’s plug at the rear of the car fitted when I bought it (‘22 ford ranger) that has been run through some sort of isolator. Could I use this cable to plug in as the starter batter input on the dcdc charger or does it need to go direct to the starting battery? Hey guys, I have a question: I have a smart alternator and 12v Cig socket in the tub. Problem is, the 12v Cig socket is always on, as in, its not switched on when the ignition is on. It must draw straight from the starter battery and is always live. My theory is that the dcdc charger will just continue to draw power from the starter battery. Is this true? Do you need the ingnition wire plugged into a 12v socket that is only live when the ignition is on? Or is it ok if the 12v socket is always live? Thanks!
Hi there, As the DCDC will isolate based on the ignition line, you would likely see it draw down on the main vehicle battery with a permanently active ignition line, sadly. Regards, Andrew
@AdventureKings i thought that was the case. Thanks though Andrew 👍👍 ill run the ingition line and probably tap into one of the ignition fuses. Cheers! P.S. absolutely love the system btw. Got it up and running with solar and absolutely stoked with the battery, box, dcdc charger, fridge and solar gear 👌
Hi there, Thank you for your question! If you are wanting to charge your battery using both solar and your vehicles alternator you will need a DCDC charger as this will protect your battery. If you were only planning on using solar a standard regulator would be fine! Regards, Courtney

Cold you help me😢😢Can i charge a 60ah lithium battery with the DC DC charger directly connected to the car?? If I can, what type of cig plug do I need? Cheers guys
Hi there, I can confirm that they are compatible with batteries of that size, please do note that it is designed to have an Anderson to Ring Terminal cable set going to the starter battery rather than the Cig plugs in the vehicle so that you get a full power input from the alternator. Regards, Andrew
Hi there, You can, but this is not ideal. Any time you add more connections and wires you're increasing resistance, so it'd be better off to run direct to battery. That being said, if you were not running heaps of power-hungry accessories through the control box it'd be ok! The fuse on the battery box quick connect plug is 30A, but the control box is rated to 50A total, so you couldn't power everything from the control box if you went that way. Regards, Courtney
Hi there, As our DCDC chargers have a built in regulator you can remove the regulator from your solar setup or connect it directly to the battery and bypass the DCDC charger. Regards, Courtney
@AdventureKings I have the dual battery kit from kings and using this as my second battery rather than under the hood. I'm not intending in using a fridge. Do I have to wire up a 12v cigarette socket in the back of the tub?
Great video. Question that’s probably a silly one, if the battery box is turned off will the battery still charger through solar and while driving or no?
Hi there, In order to charge the battery while in the battery box, the box needs to be turned on as the switch on the box is a full isolator. Kind regards, Rachael
So if i use the 12v socket as the ignition wire. When the car is off will it still use power from the battery box to power whatever you have connected to it ie you're fridge or camp lights?
@AdventureKings Hi Courtney let me rephrase that. I'll do exactly as the video. My question is when the car is off will my second battery still power all my stuff ie fridge. With the way the ignition wire is powered in this video?
@@jasonblade1037 yes mate absolutely. The blue wire is just to allow the DCDC charger to draw current from the main battery and alternator to charge the Aux. The Aux battery will power your camping fridge etc until it flattens without killing the start battery..

Cahn, this is great mate! For the blue ignition wire did you just crimp the positive and negative from the cig plug together in the spade terminal? Cheers.
Hi there, Only the positive wire was crimped as if you crimped both together it would short circuit. This is just to get the 12V+ for the ignition wire, the earth is still picked up from the DCDC charger onto the battery itself (and the 50A wiring kit to the starter battery). Cahn also checked that the cig socket on the vehicle was only 'on' when the ignition was on. With some cars the cig sockets are 'on' all the time which wouldn't work for this setup. Regards, Courtney

Im also using the 50a wiring kit to my 25a dcdc charger, do you recommend that I change the 60a fuse to 30a?
Hi there,
The recommended fuse size for our 25A DCDC Charger is 30 Amps.
Regards, Courtney
What size spade connectors are compatible with the ignition to positive cig socket wires? Thanks.
Hi there,
This is a lug terminal to suit a 50a anderson plug, our ones are measured at 3cmL, 0.8cmW, 1cm diameter!
Cheers, Courtney
Where else can i connect the ignition wire because i have a smart alternator?
Hi there, we extend the ignition wire with extra wire and tie into a fuse in the fuse box using a double adaptor. Please find the link showing this, explaining at 2.10 minutes. ua-cam.com/video/91qYNERt5Gg/v-deo.html. Kind regards, Rachael
Got a question: What happens when I don’t plug the ignition wire on and I don’t have a smart alternator will my car still charge the battery when the car is on and also when my car is off will the lithium battery drain my starter battery even while my car is off if I still have it plugged in
Hi there,
This will isolate the system whilst receiving variable voltage input while there is no ignition cable. This can also drain your starter battery while the unit is still plugged in.
Cheers, Courtney
if i was to use the 50A wiring harness . would i have to get a isolator ??
Hi there,
Thank you for the comment, I can advise that the 50a wiring kit does come with a pre existing fuse, otherwise would function predominantly as an extension cable from there.
Regards, Andrew
my question was more so does the dc dc charger have a built in isolator ?
I'm looking at this setup for the boat. The outboard does not have smart alternator. Do I ned to connect the blue ignition wire if this is the case?
Hi there,
As this is connected to the cig plug this ignition wire is not needed to connect to the outboard on the boat.
Regards, Courtney
Hello very helpful video! just wondering if it’s necessary to hook up the blue wire if my vehicle doesn’t have a smart alternator?
Did you end up hooking up the blue wire I am in the same position I don’t have a smart alternator
Does the solar panel need to be fused when plugged into the battery?
Hi there,
Thank you for the comment, generally as the regulator would shape down any surge power output this would be unnecessary.
Regards, Andrew
Can u you still charge your battery using the 50 amp and without using that blue ignition wire.?
Yes, if you don't have a smart alternator
Hi ive got a 120ah AGM battery and have the same connection to the starter battery through the battery box.. will this drain my Starter battery even if my batter box is off? Or overcharge my AGM battery?
Hi there,
Thank you for the comment, this shouldn't drain the starter battery while the vehicle isn't running as it piggybacks off of the ignition so that it's only taking power from the vehicle while the alternator is generating input.
Regards, Andrew
Hi, I’m a noob, is the ignition wire just one wire connected to the cig plug? would appreciate your help
Hi there,
That is correct!
Regards, Courtney
I followed this to a tee, but the lifep04 and alternator LED flashes when the car is off and even when the box isolator switch is off! Those two lights flash the same when the car is on too. I’m not sure if the battery is even being charged!😢 pls help
Hi Toby,
Thank you for the comment, it's hard to say without being able to see the unit directly, however it could be that it's not fully able to locate the load and might be best tested by bypassing the battery box to run past by process of elimination.
Regards, Andrew
Hey guys, need some help please. If I disconect the alternator input (Anderson plug) or switch the isolator switch off when the vehicle is not running, I wouldn't need to connect the ignition wire, would I ???
Hi there,
For this setup this ignition wire would need to be connected.
Regards, Courtney
will these DCDC chargers accept a house solar panel 38v and will it drop the voltage to 12v output for my 12v battery ?
Hi Jason,
We would recommend checking with the solar panels manufacturer if this is something that is possible.
Cheers, Courtney
I have this exact set up but one thing doesn't add up.
Will the 50amp wire that connects my alternator to the the 25a Dcdc (via Anderson plug) be a fire hazard...
Because
1-the 25amp dcdc can only take up to 25amp and my alternator battery (800cc) will produce more than 25amp easily?
2 the preattached WIRE that connects to the 25a dcdc to be connected via Anderson to the 50amp wire (that goes to my car battery) be a fire hazard as it's only rated to 25amp capacity????
Thanks
Hi there,
Thank you for the comment, I can address both of these for you with an analogy, The DCDC in this setup would act as outlet in a system, and in the same way as a tap in your water system will only allow a specific amount of throughput out of the system, any value above this point will simply just not be parsed, so you wont have any issues with the unit being damaged in this manner.
Cheers
Hi there,
If you were wanting to have this charged from the alternator of your vehicle and your vehicle had a smart alternator you would need to create an extension for the ignition wire on its own circuit.
Cheers, Courtney
Will the 25amp wire kit do as I have it with the 25amp dc to dv
Hi there,
It sure will!
(Remove the already fitted isolator) Assuming the dcdc becomes the isolator
Hi there,
This should be fine to plug into the DCDC charger.
Regards, Courtney
Does the cigy plug is both crimp red & black to the blue wire ?
It’s look like on video but not showing clearly.
Thanks for reply !
Hi there,
Only the positive wire is crimped as if you crimped both together it would circuit.
Regards, Courtney
Bad idea, short circuit
Cahn....Thanks for this great idea. I too have just done the same thing using Kings 60a lith, box, and 25a dcdc charger. I do have one question, if I may. When the isolator switch is off, does that only cut out going power. Or incoming power as well. In other words when switch is off, my fridge is off, but will the dcdc charger still top up the battery, or not.? Thanks Cahn....Mal
Hi there,
I can advise that the isolator switch is a full isolation switch, so when active will cut the battery off completely.
Regards, Andrew
Can the ign wire be connected to a fuse adapter then plug into the fuse box for a more permanent setup?
Hi Ryan,
Yes you can!
Cheers, Courtney
Hey kings, I run your battery box with agm through an isolator off my main starting battery into one input and have a panel feeding through the other input off a mppt regulator. Silly question how is this different and can I adapt your 25amp dcdc to my current set up in a similar format and also wire in my rear Anderson plug to keep a charge on my caravan batteries x2 115ah agm. Big help if you could show me the way cheers 🍻
Hi there,
The DCDC charger will narrow these inputs down to one input as you can run your alternator and panel to your DCDC unit freeing up the other anderson connection.
Cheers, Courtney
@@AdventureKings thanks Courtney, that’s great will I be able to leave my isolator under the hood and just wire up as per the video. There is fuses a plenty
Thanks!
Hi there,
As the DCDC will isolate based on the ignition line, you would likely see it draw down on the main vehicle battery with a permanently active ignition line, sadly.
Have just installed a AGM 115aH battery, battery box and fridge in my ute tray. What is the dcdc charger? Are they really needed?
Hi there,
Thank you for your question!
If you are wanting to charge your battery using both solar and your vehicles alternator you will need a DCDC charger as this will protect your battery. If you were only planning on using solar a standard regulator would be fine!
Regards, Courtney
That’s brilliant, I’ve been wondering if I could have a set up like that. Thanks.
How abt 40A dcdc will it work same way?
Hi there,
I can confirm that they do for the most part, however would need to be attached directly to the battery.
Regards, Andrew
This is the video I’m long looking for. Thank you!
Not sure if I have connected the ignition wire correctly. When my vehicle is off, the alternator light and battery light continue to flash on the DCDC charger. Is this normal?
Hi there,
This is normal when the vehicle is turned off!
Cheers, Courtney
Hey mate. I have a question i did the same set up what you did but my battery us 115am deep cycle. Why my 25Amp dc to dc charger gets really hon when is charging. I worried my ute get burned when i leave it on charge wuth the alternator
Hi there,
This is fairly standard to be hot while charging, we do have an operating temperature for these units of -20°C to 80°C.
Regards, Courtney
Cold you help me😢😢Can i charge a 60ah lithium battery with the DC DC charger directly connected to the car?? If I can, what type of cig plug do I need? Cheers guys
Hi there,
I can confirm that they are compatible with batteries of that size, please do note that it is designed to have an Anderson to Ring Terminal cable set going to the starter battery rather than the Cig plugs in the vehicle so that you get a full power input from the alternator.
Regards, Andrew
With the cig plug idea which is great, did you only connect the possitive wire in the plug??
Hi there,
Just the positive wire as if you crimp both together this would short circuit!
Regards, Courtney
Does the control box plug into the anderson plug of the batery box?
Hi there,
You can, but this is not ideal.
Thanks Cahn appreciate the vid mate and have just done the upgrade myself 🙏
What if you already have a regulator in your solar, does it work aswell?
Hi there,
As our DCDC chargers have a built in regulator you can remove the regulator from your solar setup or connect it directly to the battery and bypass the DCDC charger.
Regards, Courtney
I have a Hilux N70, so do I have to put a super long wire in to connect the ignition cable as I don't have a cig socket in the tub?
Hi there,
You may have to do this depending on your vehicle, we would recommend our 12v fridge wiring kit if you were needing to.
Regards, Courtney
@AdventureKings I have the dual battery kit from kings and using this as my second battery rather than under the hood. I'm not intending in using a fridge. Do I have to wire up a 12v cigarette socket in the back of the tub?
Is important the amount of amp the cig plug is? Thanks
Hi there,
We recommend a 15A cig plug.
Regards, Courtney
Can i use the cig plug instead of running wires from starter battery to charge aux battery?
Hi there,
You can, however most car cig plugs have a very low amperage so this may take a while to recharge.
Regards, Courtney
How do you know if it’s charging via cig plug? I just have the agm light flashing
Hi there, if the lights dim all the time, you may not be getting charge through. Kind regards, Rachael
Does the DC to DC charger solar input with an inbuilt Mttp controller charges the battery independent from vehicle alternator?
Hi there,
Our DCDC charger does have an inbuilt MPPT solar controller.
Regards, Courtney
Yes, can charge without starter battery
What about installing in a caravan to charge batteries, what happens with the blue alternator wire????
Hi there,
So long as it is able to register an active ignition it will intake power from the starter battery.
Regards, Andrew
Great video. Question that’s probably a silly one, if the battery box is turned off will the battery still charger through solar and while driving or no?
Hi there, In order to charge the battery while in the battery box, the box needs to be turned on as the switch on the box is a full isolator. Kind regards, Rachael
So if i use the 12v socket as the ignition wire. When the car is off will it still use power from the battery box to power whatever you have connected to it ie you're fridge or camp lights?
Hi Jason,
We wouldn't recommend this as indirect ignition connections may not read accurately.
Regards, Courtney
@AdventureKings Hi Courtney let me rephrase that. I'll do exactly as the video. My question is when the car is off will my second battery still power all my stuff ie fridge. With the way the ignition wire is powered in this video?
Yes, your battery box will still power your fridge once ignition is off.
Just make sure you don't turn off your battery (isolation switch)
@duanewardle-rd3lm your a legend mate, thanks
@@jasonblade1037 yes mate absolutely. The blue wire is just to allow the DCDC charger to draw current from the main battery and alternator to charge the Aux. The Aux battery will power your camping fridge etc until it flattens without killing the start battery..
I done this setup but when I turn the car off the cig sockets won't stay on for my fridge how do I go about fixing this
Hi there,
In this case we would recommend contacting us on social@4wdsupacentre.com.au with a screenshot of this comment and photos/videos of your setup so we can try to assist further!

Ive run into a problem, ive connected my cranking battery to my isolator then to my dcdc charger which is connected to my aux battery, i have found that a 30aml fuse in the battery box has melted! And yes ive earthed bother aux battery and dcdc charger

Is there any difference f9rna smart alternator hook up
Hi there,
There is no difference in the wiring if you have a smart alternator.
Cheers, Courtney
Hi! I want to connect 12v cig cable, where can I buy it? Thanks!
Hi there,
You can find this at stores such as supercheap auto!
Cheers, Courtney
Can anyone tell me the size cable that’s required to extend the ignition cable to under the bonnet?
Hi there,
Pretty much any sized wire would be fine, but this depends on the length.
Regards, Courtney
why dosent a 300w solar pannel work on mine but a 160 w dose, the 300w one works on my caravan on a mppt reg but wont work on the dcdc charger i got from you
Hi there,
This would mean the 300W solar panel would be above capacity for our DCDC charger.
Cheers, Courtney
on the instruction pannel it say will take a 300 w pannel so this must be wrong to advertise this or spec pannel is wrong
@@AdventureKings
Can you have the solar input connected and working at the same time as the 12V from the starter battery?
Yes, can run just solar
What size and type battery was 25 amp charger and 40 amp charger rated to. I can't find it again in the video
12v 100ah LIFepo4 batteries have decreased by 50% in the UK in the last two months , I can see a lot of people using this set up😊
Can I use the 40amp charger with this battery box?
Cahn, this is great mate! For the blue ignition wire did you just crimp the positive and negative from the cig plug together in the spade terminal? Cheers.
Hi there,
Only the positive wire was crimped as if you crimped both together it would short circuit.
@@AdventureKings thanks Courtney. Yes I have the 50 amp wiring kit and also have a cig socket in the back of my ute that only has power when the ignition is on. Thank you
@@AdventureKingsJust found your reply regarding cig plug, I now understand how it works as there is just 1 wire.
Thank you Nice to understand these things.
can i do the same thing with the 40a dcdc charger ?
Hi there, yes the 40a will be connected in the same manner. Kind regards, Rachael
@@AdventureKings that is strange as the fuses in these boxes are 30A and I was told in store you cannot.
What size nuts and bolts
Hi there, While we do not have the specific measurements, it should be fairly straight forward to measure and go from there. Kind regards, Rachael
I assume I can just charge my batter from a cig outlet while Im driving?
Hi there, This can be charged via the alternator via the DC DC charger. Unfortunately we do not have a cigarette outlet that works for this method. Kind regards, Rachael
should the lithium bat light and solar and aulternator light flash when only charging with solar please
Hi there,
If the alternator, solar and battery lights are quickly flashing this can indicate that there is low voltage detected at alternator and solar input. Please refer to our manual under 3.2 for how to assist with this.
Regards, Courtney
It shows that all those devices are connected
Great Video Cahn. Can the dc dc charger charge via solar without having it connected to the starter battery?
I bought one and yes it can.
No battery isolator required then?
Hi there,
A battery isolator is not needed if using a DCDC charger.
Regards, Courtney
silly questiion how do i know the dcdc charger is working or charging
Hi there,
A short flash on the alternator/solar LED indicates a bulk or absorption charging stage and a long flash indicates float. The battery type LED should have a solid green light for both of these charging stages.
Regards, Courtney
@@AdventureKings thank you sir
