It’s so strangely comforting to know that there’s nothing innately “wrong” with me that I’ve struggled to go to sleep at “a reasonable hour” basically all my adult life. It’s not because I’m undisciplined. I’m just genetically wired to be a night owl. Edit: time stamp on this comment: 2:31am
I have never slept at night, since I was a child I’ve struggled to sleep at night & also to wake up in the mornings, I essentially have had to work night jobs all my life & I always struggled waking up for school & college.
I'm a total night owl. Thank you so much for this information. I really struggle to function in this society because I am just so different in so many ways. My whole family has tried to force me to be normal and I just can't help how I am. I have tried everything but I am the most productive at night. My mind thinks faster at night and I get more done. I am more creative and I don't have a weight problem, my doctor says my body is strong. I always thought I was pathetic because I couldn't follow everyone else's sleep pattern. It caused so much anxiety and depression because I would get panic attacks in bed when I was forced to sleep early because I needed to wake up early. I love the night because it is quieter and I feel safer without the noise and so many people everywhere.
I’ve always been a night person. I wake up around 11:30pm go to work at 2am com home 10am go to bed around 4-5pm. I got more energy and motivation than waking up early. I’ve been on a similar schedule since my whole childhood up to adulthood.
I am a night owl. I worked nights for, four months, that was the best I ever felt. I had so much energy, I was happy, I sleep so good during the day and wake up fresh. I felt so healthy. I love the night. Everything is opposite now.
So you’re my leader ? May I suggest signing a truce with the early risers and compromising with our daytime sleeping routines because I need to get my ass up and find a job and get some friends and a life lmao
Thanks you for not leaving me feel guilty one more day, I/ve been shouting it for years and I remember the day a medical doctor laughed at me when I said my problem was genetic, that I was designed for late sleeping like a wolf.
Reading Matthews book changed the way I see myself and helped me accept who I am. I didn’t feel like I fit in. I now feel as though I do have my own place in the world.
Dr. Patrick, thank you so much for your work! You’ve helped provide the information for me to drastically improve my sleep. I first found out about you on Joe Rogan, and you’ve also helped me to greatly improve my diet based on your discussion of the micro biome. I had to idea it existed, which made it difficult to take care of! Thanks again!
I am an extreme morning person, go to bed at 6 pm and start waking in the 3 am hour. Sometimes I fall asleep as early as 5 pm. Getting much more quality, restful sleep since I started sleeping on a grounding mat. Dream and remember some of those dreams almost every night.
Oh believe me thats an easy one. If youve been through nursery, primary school, secondary, high school & college and STILL if you are still feeling miserable when you wake up in the morning, you are definitely leaning more towards a strong influence from your chronotype.
@@sciencetainment3793yeah, I’ve been a night owl my whole life. From the time I was a child, through high school, young adult and now- I’ve always stayed up late…not matter how early I have to wake up. It doesn’t even matter. No matter how tired I am- I still am up late
Thanks for this. I always go to bed after 1am with no sleeping problem. Now I try to sleep earlier and find it harder. Need to find time suits for myself.
Yo Matthew Walker, you said on Joe Rogan that we have an innate sleeping pattern and said that midnight is the "middle of the night" but here you talk about sleeping patterns being personal, how do you reconcile those two points? Can anybody else help? I can't imagine he's reading all the comments.
It seems like that was more so to illustrate the change in culture in general on the perception of what is considered late. Keep in mind people who might not actually be "genetic night owls" may be staying up later than their chronotype would suggest. Just because someone keeps themselves awake late into the night doesn't necessarily mean they are of that chronotype; the wakefulness may be artificial and forced. Just guessing though.
My life is miserable - I wake up at 7… And every morning I feel dead. I am cold, dizzy and nauseous. I am not able to eat anything till 11-12am… It doesn’t matter if I sleep 6,8 or 10h - if I have to wake up in the morning I will feel exhausted anyway. We are screwed and most likely we will die earlier.
@Anto yeah but I have a job unfortunately :/ unless I will change profession and go freelance - I don’t think it’s really possible to just wake up at 12. At about 10 I feel like it’s my optimal waking up time (I don’t feel shivering and I am also slowly getting hungry).
@Anto it’s complicated- my profession allows me to do freelance but I don’t think I would do so much money this way (saturated market) I am lucky to have pretty good full time job :/ I also hate people so I am happy when I don’t have to deal with them 😆
Anyone know where you can check your dna to know what type you are? I find it hard to pinpoint just by testing, too many other factors to consider when evaluating quality from sleep. Also getting test results would make it easier to build a case for changing work hours
@Rj Juice So aggressive lol, chill out. Use your initiative. I found it out by testing out different times of waking up and how I felt. For example, at the start of lockdown I had to get up at 8am for a new job; when I got enough sleep I felt ok but never 'amazing.' I started modifying my wake time when my contract ended and noticed how much 'pep' I had when I woke at 11. Also if you look into chronotypes, they also dictate what times of day you're most productive. Even though there are different terms for the types, it says that generally night owls get their productive boost in the evening, early risers before noon etc.
this doesnt compute for me. wtf does natural innate preference mean in this context. obviously not sleeping like i was born. But how to know if i ever slept like my "natural innate preference" is or what it is?
Early birds start the day breathing air with extremely low levels of free radicals and are in bed before they peak. Night owls never have any time with very low levels and are still up when the levels peak. We know that oxidative stress plays a role in more or less everything that is higher risk for night owls and that breathing free radicals increases oxidative stress. Are there any studies to your knowledge that consider this when comparing the different time cycles? Photochemical oxidation doesn't happen at night other than full moons but to a much lesser degree. It generally starts shortly after sunrise.
You're right, you'll probably face some serious health consequences. Only good thing you have to look forward to though is that it can be somewhat circumvented if you stop now and who knows, maybe in 10 years there'll be some good treatments to alzheimers.

You may be a night owl and be undisciplined
Worst part though is realizing you’re a night owl but all your friends are early birds
You have no idea how much this video helped me. Seriously thank you.
I have never slept at night, since I was a child I’ve struggled to sleep at night & also to wake up in the mornings, I essentially have had to work night jobs all my life & I always struggled waking up for school & college.
I'm sorry to hear that hope you are fine

Here me at 3:12 am finally not feeling guilty about being king of the owl people

I'm sorry but I must reign on your parade as THE king of owl people. It's 4am and i've just made dinner

I've loathed the AM hours after the sun rises for as long as I can remember.
That says about nothing. Sleeping is highly depending on your habits and mental world.
How do I determine if it's my chronotype or bad sleeping habits that make me a night owl?
Exactly my question..
Oh believe me thats an easy one.

I absolutely love the morning hours but based on my natural sleep rhythm I believe I'm an owl.
Thanks for this. I always go to bed after 1am with no sleeping problem. Now I try to sleep earlier and find it harder. Need to find time suits for myself.

This made me realize my chronotype is insomnia
this made me laugh in the besst way

Fascinating question
I would imagine this doesnt change much as both groups are always breathing. Even in sleep the body is actually quite active.
Very very interesting video
But when will it become law to allow employees to start work later?
40 years of shift work means I laugh in the face of sleep deprivation, won’t make old bones though.

I sleep at 6pm and wake up at midnight. What the hell type is that???
Lol I fell asleep at 6pm and woke up at 2am today so
Me too....😴
So, I’m screwed.
Anyone have any legit sources that these sleep chronotypes exist? Something in Nature or Cell maybe?
Google
So If I'm A Night Owl, My Only Option Is To Be A Early Night Owl So I Can Wake Up An Hour Earlier....
Yooo
Get yourself some sleep.
