I have been working with AI on my book for the last couple months, and boy did you hit the head of the nail with a hammer when you said working with an AI can be more like being an editor. I have found that even after giving the AI a very detailed scene beat, the majority of my time is spent editing the generated prose. But I edit the prose by having conversations with the AI telling it what I think needs to be added/revised/removed, focusing on everything from the entire scene, all the way down to a specific word. This takes a considerable amount of time, but the result is far better than what I or the AI could do alone. I was also surprised by how fun I found this process, even as time-consuming as it is. It's like working with a collaborator who has endless ideas (some good, some not) and no ego to bruise lol.

I actually sometimes tends to focus on bad ideas, or while chatting with it i keeps asking what if (stupid thought)? the result of course will turn stupid, but some of them can be inspiring.
for example, in a story I am writing, the MMC is out with El, his imaginary love interest, i asked the AI to add something funny in the scene, so the AI makes El interact with an old lady who interrupts a dialog between the MMC and El with some funny comment, then they both ran and laughed.
how stupid... that was my first reaction as El is imaginary, no one can see. Then i was like oh! that could serve as a good trigger for El to develop her character if I tweaked it and make it so El thought the old lady was talking to her but in fact she was talking through her earbuds, now El for the first time know how i feels to be noticed.

One of the most powerful skill accelerators I've found with AI is to use it as its own prompt generator for a specific genre or style, and then reference the generated prompt as part of your own prompt instructions when creating your new material. The first step is to have the AI analyze the particular style for the named authors of your choosing and create a reference prompt that captures the essential elements of their style. You then refer to this style prompt in your AI system prompt instructions as style guidance for all later text generation in a project. What this does is narrow the AI output to words and structures reflecting the more sophisticated and proven styles of great artists without directly using their names in the system prompt. Your voice must always emerge as you edit the generated material, but it gets you to a much more polished level faster than trial and error would take.

I've been switching the term "hard work" with effort. I think in our instant gratification world, people forget that you have to put in effort, otherwise what's the point of life? The work itself doesn't have to be hard but I agree with your point. I think people who aren't learning about AI will be left behind. Hi, Jason. I have been watching a lot of your videos and love many of the theories, but I have been working on my debut novel for 12 years (nearly done) and have held off using any generative AI to complete it for fear of publisher rejection due to the presence of any AI (as well as personal pride in having done it before generative AI). I have dabbled with gen AI on stories I don't have a lot invested in, so know its power, however I think the biggest hurdle to acceptance of AI use in story crafting is reader acceptance of it. If someone interviewed Stephen King and asked, "how did you come up with the concept of 'the Shining,' and he said 'the AI came up with it,' I suspect his brand would take a hit, because the story didn't come from a human. I am fairly certain readers want to believe every line of a novel has a human story behind it. This is why I really don't know about all of this. There might be some readers who don't care where every concept or line of a good story came from, but I don't know what percentage of the audience that is. I know I wouldn't want to read a book that was entirely AI, even if it was 'Lord of the Rings'. I think "Tiffany," in your example, would only beat Harold, if she didn't use any GENERATIVE AI to fully craft any full line of prose, or only used the de minimis of it, or only used AI to edit her initial draft.

I believe the world has lost out on some great books because of the stereotype of the lonesome writer who locks himself up in a cabin with his typewriter. Some of my favorite books have been coop works, and that's not even counting the editors who are often not mentioned despite being vital to a good book. Using AI as a partner may not be quite the same, but it is better than nothing.

My thing is do what you enjoy doing and you won't be working at all. I know this is kind a cliche, but it is absolutely true for writing. There are a lot of people who just want to say they are are tortured artists without the art. If you are having to force yourself to sit down and write, then perhaps writing is not the thing you should be doing. Go pretend to do something else. I mean if your are going to pretend to be something, try nuclear physicist. lol
Since I am both a writer (mostly for fun, we shall see about publishing for money), but I am also an IT architect working with many different technologies including the creation of some forms of AI. I can tell you it will be quite a while before AI reaches the true creativity of a really talented writer. The thing you will want to look for on that front would be the addition of quantum systems to AI. The quantum nature of the human mind (the core subject of my fictional novel) is what allows us to make the creative jumps that digital systems really can't. Right now it feels like they are because they are trained on such vast quantities of data that what pops out is the combined creativity of mankind essentially, but in the end it isn't really creating the same way a human is. Later it will though. In the meantime, in collaboration with a good storyteller, AI can produce some pretty awesome work.
I don't really agree that the difference between a TALENTED classically trained writer and a novice writer plus AI is an editor function. You certainly need to be able to edit or some ridiculous things will end up in your writing, but the difference is more than that. I have met and read some classically trained writers who were just that, writers. They were not storytellers. They approach writing like a recipe. If they create the correct outline, add the the correct number of conflicts per chapter, arc the story exactly the way they were taught, then they get a novel. In the same way that being able to read a recipe does not make you a great chef, just being able to follow a story pattern will not ever make you a great storyteller even though you may be an excellent writer. AI is the rough equivalent of having been trained by a higher institution to write. There is no course you can take or AI in existence that will make you a great storyteller if you are not one. On the other hand, if you are a great storyteller minus the writing skills, you can, over time with the help of AI, become a great writer.

As an author you'll make more money being in a bad garage band even if you do put in the work, so if you're looking for AI to be the quick fix you'll be even worse off than that.
