Indeed. Most fans can play this style of basketball in their backyard, just jack up threes. There's nothing special about the NBA game. People want to see things they can't do themselves. And I think most players in the NBA are bored, if no one is really competing, than why not play at a 60% level and just grab your insane moneybag.
I agree. I think the main problem is simply the reffing. If the league established improved standardized rules, then it would fix a lot of problems. Techs for excessive flopping and complaining, allow more physical defense and incidental contact, actually call travels and carries... and make the new updated rules clear to everyone like they did a couple years ago with the flopping rules and whatnot. All of this would even out the defense and offense some more, and we might actually get some new styles of play out of it

I’m just going to give a different take. I don’t believe the falloff in ratings have to do with any of that. not politics, 3s, nothing. The average person just does not have the time to follow and watch the NBA season. Especially when you can easily watch the highlights on your phone in 2 minutes on the way to work.
That's what always says, I am a rockets fan, but I don't have time to watch all the games and more if they are not ready to win a championship, I just watch the 2min highlights and if they classified to playoff I would watch completely
Thats true but the proportion of the games you watch would be higher if: -it costs less effort and money to keep up with the league -the product is better
My counter point would be people don’t think 3s are a problem because they just watch highlights. They don’t show the misses in highlights. I am a full game guy and it is so frustrating to watch. Today so far there have been 45, 48, 53, and 54 missed 3s. I did some math the other day and the league average was exactly 48 per game. A brick a minute.
My take is Lebron turned the NBA into the WWF and Circus. He would be a pure knock-down even if he hadn't been hit yet. He flops around when nobody even touches him. That man is a clown. He's an embarrassment. LeClown and Buffoony James Jr.. BUWAH HAH AHHA HAH.
1.) Too expensive to watch; have to purchase a variety of things to watch your own local team. (Cable, Hulu, Netflix, etc.) 2.) Politics: only sport that talks about it when people want to watch sports not politics. 3.) Gambling: it’s become a thing for the league to promote it constantly and it’s costing the outcomes of these games. 4.) 3-PT shooting: way too many teams offenses are too eerily similar. Instead of bully ball down low and midrange with occasional three pointers it’s almost a boatload of three point shooting. 5.) Officials: These officials have got to be the most soft, sensitive and no feel for the game referees of all time. Adam Silver refuses to let officials take the blame and cover their asses more than ever. Baldy has got work to do to fix this mess because he started it all.
@@kevinlam4550 hence why I said it’s one of the many issues the league is facing now. It’s not the biggest problem but it’s one of them. I agree it’s not the biggest problem

Yeah back then even the announcers were like spice to the game. Compared to them, today's are so flat and full of cringes. Even more so are the refs because they used to let the players play and judged pretty fairly.
I don't know why so many people insist they love watching post-play. It's the most uncreative, uncharismistic style of basketball imaginable. A lot of Jordan's popularity likely stemmed from being a face-up player in a league of elite centers
Another problem with blaming players and coaches speaking out is that they’re not saying these things during basketball. They’re saying it after the game. And I don’t think most fans tune into after game interviews.
Exactly. If you only watched the games, you would have no idea what the political views of NBA players and coaches are. My apolitical brother is really into the NBA and I'm sure if I quizzed him about the political positions within the NBA he would draw a blank.
Exactly. I watch a few games a week, but almost never post games or interviews, or use Twitter, so I never hear NBA politics. This video is the first time I heard of some of this. People are seeking it out so they can complain
3’s take the majority of the blame. It’s a lazy cop out to offence. Instead of using your brain and athleticism to generate a shot you just drive and kick constantly. People don’t like to watch repetition, they like to watch creativity, athleticism, uniqueness. The reason Caitlin Clark and Curry can take 3s and be popular is because they do step backs, fadeaways and hit tough shots while be guarded like a hawk. It is not repetitive. You’re missing the nuance behind why the average player shooting 3s is so bad for the league
- players are soft - refs are soft - every player wants to be Steph curry - no defense - no mid game offense - should at least upload one full game from any era on their UA-cam to expand popularity (like WWE and their matches) - stop being political
Logically, the reason the MLB saw such and increase is because the population of the state of NY and CA is just shy of 60M combined. Not difficult to see an increase when your state potential fan pool is 60 million between the two teams...

@buffalosoldier7360 You’re out of the loop bro! This generation my generation (im 17) is way more republican than past generations. Trump has a cool factor and the democrats have a fake factor.
To me, it's because of: The officiating, needed multiple streaming services or subscriptions to watch one game (or multiple if your TV can play 4 channels at once in real time), lack of marketing the next generation of stars, not being allowed to defend consistently, biased media, and LeBron
Neither was Stern. Neither of them ever played basketball at the NBA level. They're both business men. They need to have a commissioner who played the game, was loyal to the team they played for, and cares about the quality of the game. Also the players should vote for the commissioner like they vote for the players association president. If the commissioner is going to have the power then at least he should have played the game because he will care about the game first. If he improves the game then the money will come because the players will play the kind of basketball the people want to watch. Imagine if Magic Johnson or Larry Bird or Michael Jordan or Patrick Ewing were commissioner. They might bring back hand checks, have more input into choosing refs, widen the pool in that area and see if we keep getting the crap we get now. There needs to be change in this regard to improve the quality of the game.

Adam Silver does not care if few million US fans don't watch it. NBA far more popular globally. Don't forget NBA has 90 mil while NFL has only 30 mil insta followers. Pat Mahomes has 6 mil while LeBron has 160 mil insta followers!!
The problem is, people can watch post game highlights and it is ok no need to watch the entire game. Also there are a lot of sources in the internet and social media where to watch live NBA games. The NBA cannot see the actual numbers of global viewers and supporters of the NBA games.
You don't have to agree or listen to them. It's not like they take a timeout during the game, grab the mic and start lecturing you. Mainstream sports betting and questionable ref calls are screwing up the NBA... Lets not forget the all the streaming subscriber you need to buy just to watch games.
Its a multifactorial thing why NBA rating is down but overall the product is becoming bad due to the following: ~ Load management ~ no new stars are being promoted that much (as they rely still on KD, Steph, LBJ) ~ no variance in game play (just shoot 3s and thats it) ~ low defense /no effort on defense ~ bad officiating ~ no rivalries/drama
Shi will go up eventually, these new players definitely got it in them to carry the league, guys like jokic, Edward’s, donic, ja, Tatum, Gianni’s just need to start making the finals every year against each other and the legacy gotta let these guys play and get off whatever they feel in these pressers, what makes ufc so great is the press conferences before the fight be so wild everyone wants to see what happens

I also think the nba stars moving around and teaming up with others has made the NBA even more boring. Like when LeBron did it with Miami it was the biggest news ever! Now every time I hear something like that I don’t even react anymore. I also agree with players missing so many games is causing fans to get disinterested as well. Seems like some players are not giving their full effort all the time! They get paid to not play.

The politics point is still just absurd. The NBA has been highly represented by urban POC, namely African Americans for half a decade. Its also impossible to demand that the wealthy, mostly black celebrities who are the face of the league never talk about politics, and those politics will be liberal 95% of the time. Most of these political statements and speeches don't even happen during the official game broadcast. The right will always complain about NBA players. Even if they don't make political statements, large portions of the political right will be annoyed by how non-white the league is, both literally and culturally. I wouldn't even assign 10% of the blame of the low ratings to this issue.

5:34 in all fairness, i think this is a facile analysis, reducing offensive gameplay down to two extreme examples: patrick ewing back to the basket” vs. “steph curry shooting threes”. the issue many of us have with modern gameplay is the extreme predictability. the sport is so beautiful to watch when it is dynamic and unpredictable, but because those traits are typically antithetical to smart, winning basketball, they’ve been replaced with a statistically efficient but stale viewing product.

Nothing to do with politics. Nobody even watches those postgame interviews.
Everything to do with the stoppages and bad refereeing/player rotation.
Stop showing me adverts every 2 minutes man. I want to see the game flow. Cut the number of timeouts.
Politics is a HUGE part of of it. The second they put black lives losers on the court was the second I stopped watching
Nah I think politics is a really small factor it might be big to you individually though. People being able to watch games easily is the big issue.
@@statlanta_ I think we can all agree that the NBA has multiple issues 😕
It's sad, I used to love the NBA. I think that the issues will get worse before things change
The viewership drops started happening in 2019-2020 when everybody was home in front of a TV same year with the BLM riots
@@tjsoko15 I mean yeah but the old adage is correlation =/= causation. There could’ve been other factors like COVID causing a season break to happen & increased fragmentation of viewership & difficulty accessing games.
For me, it is that games are no longer on TV.
They need to let NBA go back to 90s rules. Let them be physical and ratings might just go back up
All of this would even out the defense and offense some more, and we might actually get some new styles of play out of it
It's the players attitudes to work ethic, entitlement and lack of loyalty to teams.
Are teams loyal to players?
@Deathwink1 I don't expect them to be. It's their business. They need to do the right thing by their fans
@@Deathwink1that don’t make sense. Why should they be loyal to a player.? What company or business is loyal to employees?! You under perform or mess up you get fired. Teams reward you heavily with money. Basketball players make hundreds of millions of dollars so to me that’s loyal cuz where else you going to make that kinda money? If a player under performs they don’t get money taken away. If they don’t play they still get paid. You don’t show up to work you don’t get paid unless your salary and even then you can’t be missing a lot or you get fired..

Thats true but the proportion of the games you watch would be higher if:
-it costs less effort and money to keep up with the league
-the product is better
Agreed. The condensed games are short and skip the bs calls/free throwz.
(Cable, Hulu, Netflix, etc.)
2.) Politics: only sport that talks about it when people want to watch sports not politics.
Gambling is not as big of an issue considering every sports has it and it hasn’t affected their ratings. It’s mainly 1 and 5.
@@kevinlam4550 hence why I said it’s one of the many issues the league is facing now. It’s not the biggest problem but it’s one of them. I agree it’s not the biggest problem
I disagree with your second reason. If there is something important going on, it has to be said.
6) Adam Silver
Lack of tough defense, lack of household names, lack of teams with identities
To me it’s a few things:
-7 ft tall people shooting 3s
-Stars choosing not to play
-Impossible to watch games I want to watch without every streaming service
-Every team plays the same way
-Endless commercials
-Every day teams have new uniforms and play on a new court
-Announcers are garbage
This is so fun, never get tired of watching your posts.
- players are soft
- refs are soft
- every player wants to be Steph curry
- no defense
- no mid game offense

Logically, the reason the MLB saw such and increase is because the population of the state of NY and CA is just shy of 60M combined. Not difficult to see an increase when your state potential fan pool is 60 million between the two teams...
It's because we need to subscribe to about 7 different apps to watch games. If I cant see it on my cable or NBA League Pass I'm out. And a $100/year league pass should be enough to watch EVERY game.

First of all it wasn’t half the country that voted for trump,it was 30% of voting age adults. Kids are even more democratic. I agree that since Steph and Bron started dropping off basketball has gotten less exciting…
I will say your content has more refreshing takes and less recycled content then some of the hoop you tubers right now. Thanks brotha
Stern would’ve never allowed this clown show. Silver has never been fit to be the commissioner

NBA is NOT in trouble. US ratings do not affect NBA at all because NBA has already landed 11-year, $76 billion mega broadcast deal. It doesn't matter if y'all Americans watch NBA or not. The world is watching NBA. The NBA gets millions and millions of viewers from China, Philippines, Indonesia, India, Europe and Japan which no other American sports league gets. You rarely hear about it FROM THE MEDIA. If you talk to regular people it gets brought up all the time. It's not the only reason, but IT IS a part of the problem, and denying that fact would just be silly
Mainstream sports betting and questionable ref calls are screwing up the NBA... Lets not forget the all the streaming subscriber you need to buy just to watch games.
Its a multifactorial thing why NBA rating is down but overall the product is becoming bad due to the following:
~ Load management
~ no new stars are being promoted that much (as they rely still on KD, Steph, LBJ)
~ no variance in game play (just shoot 3s and thats it)
~ low defense /no effort on defense
~ bad officiating
~ no rivalries/drama
Shi will go up eventually, these new players definitely got it in them to carry the league, guys like jokic, Edward’s, donic, ja, Tatum, Gianni’s just need to start making the finals every year against each other and the legacy gotta let these guys play and get off whatever they feel in these pressers, what makes ufc so great is the press conferences before the fight be so wild everyone wants to see what happens
These guys get fined for just looking at the ref 😂😂😂

6) Free Substitutions like hockey, players can enter and exit without play stoppage
7) Coaches taking Technical FT

The politics point is still just absurd. The NBA has been highly represented by urban POC, namely African Americans for half a decade. Its also impossible to demand that the wealthy, mostly black celebrities who are the face of the league never talk about politics, and those politics will be liberal 95% of the time. Most of these political statements and speeches don't even happen during the official game broadcast. The right will always complain about NBA players. Even if they don't make political statements, large portions of the political right will be annoyed by how non-white the league is, both literally and culturally.
