  • Join archaeologist Darius Arya Digs for a walk in the southern Campus Martius, a central area in Ancient Rome. We'll start at the foot of the Capitoline Hill and the Forum Holitorium and Forum Boarium. We will descend from the modern street level into an incredible archaeological park with Augustan-era pavement, walking past the Theater of Marcellus, Temple of Bellona, Temple of Apollo Sosianus, and up to the Portico of Octavia, nestled in the thriving neighborhood of Rome's Jewish Ghetto. Let's explore some Roman history!
Keep up with the adventures of Darius Arya, the archaeologist with access. History in real life!

One of my favorite sites of Rome, Love it. It''s a lot less visited compared to other sites but equally rich. Also one of the few places to rent an actual historic site with an AIRBNB access to it

Consiglio ai turisti di ammirare le sculture frontonali del tempio di Apollo Sosiano esposte nel Museo della Centrale Montemartini. Bel video!

So much to see in Rome. I visited this past May (2023) for 6 days and walked, walked, walked but never got to this area. That's why I HAVE to go back.

5:53. Get a good look at those beautiful olive trees in pots. Those are gorgeous specimens.
I've had some small olive trees but none of them ever got to that size and fullness. Must be a hardier breed.

Being a classical history nut and architecture fan, but after enjoying other roman sites as a kid, now being disabled, Daryus provides all the sites I can't get to

I remember coming across this as I finished up at the Capitoline Museum and being wowed so of course I had to explore. That is the one thing I love MOST about Rome you just never know what you will find around the corner. Great Video Darius. 👏

Amazing how the column is sticking out of the ground, must have been what the Campo Vaccino was like before the excavations!

I was lucky enough to stay at an Hotel in the Via San Teodoro on one side of the Palatine hill it was ideally situated for walking through some of the less touristy ruins, I loved the little roman street between the Mamertime prison and the Wedding Cake (Victorio Emmanuel memorial) as its called through lines of ancient Roman shops now inhabited by wild cats.

Why did people in whatever century, build their more modern building right by and almost on top of the ancient ruins? Why did they not move back away from the ruins, to preserve them more?? Just curious.

Maybe you live in northern america, you are used to see a lot of land wasted and poorly managed. In Europe many countries do not have that much land and cities are often structured around their medieval lines. Once the streets exists, it defines where new building will go. They do not care about old ones. There just isn't any available space. It also means europeans are specialist of urban planning whereas in NA. it's still prehistoric times.

interesting to see the difference between weather and human influence and what was buried at the ruins of the theatre of Marcellus.
Excavation has its disadvantages, what is still intact will quickly decay.
But, tourism and bloggers also want to make money from it, and that may cost something.
The best archaeology is excavation, measurement and study and then quickly reburyed.
Too bad for the day trippers, who can read books and look at photos.
