Thank you so much for putting this on UA-cam. tmThe time we live in is just amazing. We can access whatever and whenever we want. If i want I can just listen to this on the train. When Schubert wrote those pieces only the richest people could afford a privet concert.
Franz Schubert has always been underrated. Considering the music he composed in his brief 30 years on earth, he is possibly the most talented composer ever. The world would be much less tolerable without his music. Most grateful. ❤
Schubert's symphonic compositions are the Mandelbrot set of music, where bits of melody, rhythm, and instrumentation emerge, replicate, and evolve without actually repeating. It is both homogeneous and complex, and I often find it difficult to pull myself away. Then he turns around and writes string quartets that have as much direction and intention as if you were reading a story. He turns around again and writes Serenade and Ave Maria that are manifestations of pure emotions. He was a man of many talents, even if they were all confined to music.
It’s true that without the architect of what became known as Classical music, Bach, we may not have had those that used his science. But we all need teachers! Doesn’t make Schubert lesser, but having had the beautiful soul to have chosen to compose using those laws!!
Schubert always has and always will be one of my favorite composers. His development of his own voice, and unique writing style is very apparent. Sometimes I feel as if he developed this more than some of the more famous/mainstream composers of his era and before.

@@davidschreiter3513 You missed it. The misspelled "private" as "privet" led to a gardening joke. Privet is a plant often used to make hedges, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Privet so he was making a rather clever, if somewhat obscure, joke.
When I was a kid, not that long ago, I had 3 LPs to choose from: Schubert (Unfinished Symphony on side A, can´t remember what was on side B), Beethoven (Symphonies 3 on side A and 6 on side B), and Mozart (Jupiter and some other Symphony). The world has changed since, changed a lot. For good, regarding music, for bad in many other ways.
The sound quality here is astonishing. Bravo to the recording engineers. Of course the playing is superlative as well, and these quartets are amazingly deep, almost symphonic in scope.
Sometimes, definitely. Sometimes they deserve real criticism. Using Auto-Tune and Pitch Correction places where they absolutely should not. Pavarotti for just one example.
This is an incredible performance, both in superb playing, & just to have all Schubert's quartets in one presentation. I'm at 2nd movement #15, up all night working, in a state of near-enchantment, after more than 7 hours - & I may ignore any sleep, just to listen to all this over again, immediately. Like some others (comments) who never knew all Schubert's quartets, I am amazed at what I have missed. These Diogenes players also interpret the often-heard pieces with compelling expertise. The Death & the Maiden, for example, made my work impossible - transcendent beauty - had to stand up, eyes closed, letting it fill me, so to speak. Amazing. Thanks to all.
@@vonMohl Different energy: maybe not in emotional sensibility? Consider - if r&r = wake-up, trace back the Foundation; say, Muddy Waters to Mississippi Fred McDowell to Charley Patton, back up to (piano) Jelly Roll Morton to Teddy Wilson to Mose Allison, or Thelonious. See if there isn't a quality (passion? searching?) that Schubert's genius, at more refined intellectual expression, presents in the structures of classical music. Just a thought. Maybe of some importance, linking people, in our socially/culturally fractured world... nothing against Metallica, or Jerry Lee Lewis. :)
My favourite composers are clearly Schubert Mozart Beethoven Bach Haydn Paganini Ariagga!! (Died age 19) Weiniawski. Oh, some of mendelson. That's 9. If i had to round it off to ten, i wouldn't know who to choose. Maybe brahms has some redeeming qualities. It doesn't mean i don't appreciate other single works of other composers.
SCHUBERT ALWAYS SINGS! No matter what he writes, even in the string quartet, we can hear that unique voice. Other composers dance but we are so spoiled to have this great composer singing! And I too sing the praises of Diogenes Quartet and Brilliant Classics. You too spoil us with this great treasure. Many, many thanks!
There are so many great composers and I love them all for their own unique talents. But Schubert is my go-to when I wind down for the night. Not because his work bores me or makes me sleepy; it's because I just find myself so relaxed, mentally and physically, and calm and reflective.
Schuberts music is just incredible and beyond. It is such perfect and beautiful music, balanced and very listenable. So enjoyable and thought provoking. Lovely
If you really enjoy "strings", you may want to listen to some Tchaikovsky! But then, I am biased toward Tchaikovsky! Just a suggestion! And welcome to the world of Classical Music!
Schubert's quartets were a fine start. For me, there are three composers who tower over the rest: J. S. Bach, W. A. Mozart & Beethoven. There's more worthwhile classical music than one can possibly listen to in a lifetime. The Brahms symphonies and Stravinsky's Le Sacre are also special to me.
@X2Magneto You need to listen to Mozart's 6 Haydn Quartets, his 6 children like he said, he spend months working on them, not something usual for him. They are not so easy to listen, because they are very complex and sometimes abstract, but they are worth it. ua-cam.com/play/OLAK5uy_neWy6Mng8PSdFkl_I6vMhSXGbjFh4QTeA.html
Amazing - absolutely amazing. What a treasure-trove. I just finished listening to the entire collection; most of the works are new to me because classical radio stations tend to play the same few quartets over and over - not that those works aren't wonderful, but it's nice to have some variety. What an astounding gift Schubert had. Thank you for posting these in their entirety! Bravo! Brava!
you are so right. the chance to hear the entire works of a single genius is a great gift for us listeners! thank you for your thoughtful and meaningful comments!
@@Josh442 It used to be Pachelbel's "Canon," but of late, it seems to be either "The Fair Melusina" or "Calm Seas and Prosperous Voyage!" More P.D.Q. Bach! More Anna Russell!
I like these Schubert quartets the best of all the ones I listen to and keep hunting them out. They are brilliantly performed here too. Thank you for putting the whole collection together on You Tube.
Listening to this work of magical brings back such great memories of my Dad and I having beers, playing Chess or Cribbage while having great discussions. This has to be one of my all time favorite music videos of all time.

I've also bought this album, and now it's here for free. In my opinion, it makes no sense of buying music CDs any more, better come to UA-cam and get all this music for zero cost. *Grrrr*
Unless you want to eat up data on your phone, you can't listen to UA-cam in the car. Only CDs in car. Also, sound reproduction of a CD in a nice stereo is much better than a smart phone or computer.
Remember, nothing is free. And it's good to support the artists with your own money, if you can. I enjoy discovering new music on UA-cam, but it doesn't replace CD's for me, in the comfort of my living room and the sound of my stereo equipment.
There is no mistake of keeping CDs. They are always at your disposal, you always can easily find them. And when your WiFi is down, there is no UA-cam music.
These performances are very great, especially as the Diogenes are very attentive to tone color, even sometimes playing sul ponticello (near the bridge) as part of their palette..
Schubert, more than almost any other composer of string quartets, masters the art of matching beauty with energy. His quartets -- along with the brilliant string quintet in C Major -- engage thought, imagination, passion, and many, if not most, of the senses. His music defines the term "sublime," the aural equivalent of encountering Switzerland's Alps for the first time. Schubert is to string quartets what Chopin is to the piano. Genius.
Ahhh this really takes me back to the days of waiting on hold when ringing the bank. The vocals "an operator will be with you shortly", and "we are currently experiencing high call volumes" fit so perfectly with the music.
Back when my homies and I were trying to do old school boombap style hip hop we ALWAYS went to Schubert and Schumann for the fire samples. That was ever so long ago, but I still love listening to their works 👌
Great composer. Spent many enjoyable hours in years gone by playing some of the quartets and quintet with friends. Glad this collection popped up on my feed, music for today now sorted.
Franz Peter Schubert ( (Vienna) 1797- (Vienna) 1828) was an Austrian composer of the early romantic period. Schubert was composing from his early ages. With les then 20 years, he composed few symphonys. While Schubert was alive people didn't pay attention on his music. He composed 9 symphonys from wich is most famus no. 8 (,,Unfinished"), many piano pieces, 630 solo songs, string quartets, quintets... Schubert was berried ,as hi wanted, next to Beethoven, his idol.
I read in a biography of Schubert that he was in love with a simple young lady, not very pretty but gentle, a singer, but he could never marry her because he was not rich enough. She waited for him a long while until she could not wait any longer.. I found this story sad sure but very romantic too ...
I came here during the CovidPandemic...my 2 older cats like to listen and nap to Eric Satie's Gymnopedies. I'm trying to expand their musical horizons, hence Schubert String Quartets...Boccherini is next, but seems doubtful, they seem to prefer the haunting dreamlike music of Satie.
For me, it's my guinea pigs who enjoy classical music. They even love being on my knees when I play the piano...Cheers from France to you and your cats.

Passion for this kind of music greetings from Oaxaca De Juárez Mexico my favorite clásica Music the sounds for intellectuals people really enjoy very mucho who else besideme?
My only complaint is that they aren't in order but thanks I am adding this to my playlist of complete works If anyone has any suggestions on sets I should add that would be great
Much like Mozart’s quartets, Schubert’s early quartets are unfairly shoved under a rug. I still believe if one wants to know a composer, they have to study all of their works, even the lesser ones, which the early quartets undeniably are.
Schubert's earliest string quartets were stamped with his unique emotionally probing style and are definitely deserving fair play. The wonderful Diogenes Quartet gives them full justice. Thanks as always to Brilliant Classics.
@@barrymalkin9679 Well said. Sometimes it seems an early, or later "one-off" composition is revealing (at least, to me) about a composer's personality or feelings, that his fully developed oeuvre sort of overwhelms; I think of Verdi's Qrt. Em, in this sense.

Great job !
Thank you so much for putting this on UA-cam. tmThe time we live in is just amazing. We can access whatever and whenever we want. If i want I can just listen to this on the train. When Schubert wrote those pieces only the richest people could afford a privet concert.
Wow dedication??
I really appreciate your work. Thanks a lot.
Franz Schubert has always been underrated. Considering the music he composed in his brief 30 years on earth, he is possibly the most talented composer ever. The world would be much less tolerable without his music. Most grateful. ❤
The fact that he created a huge body of the highest quality original work directly in the shadow of Beethoven makes it all the more impressive.
This 30year old Schubert will never die in my heart ❤️
I understand you, but I've never under-rated Franz Schubert, the lovable man who was most unfortunate himself.
He belongs right up there in the tier with Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Hayden, and the other immortals.
The comfort of Schubert`s music is irreplaceable , and incomparable , and beyond compare
This is some of the finest music ever written. Schubert was a genius of the first order. Thank you.
You can't place him above Bach, though.
Schubert ein genialer österreichischer Musiker

I am grateful.
Well put sir
If you wanted a privet concert you would have to have a hedge fund.
He created so much beauty in his all too short life of 32 years..GENIUS!
The sound quality here is astonishing. Bravo to the recording engineers. Of course the playing is superlative as well, and these quartets are amazingly deep, almost symphonic in scope.
indeed! also nice stereo!
Yeah recordings engineers don't always get credit, it's an entire artwork itself.
Sometimes, definitely. Sometimes they deserve real criticism. Using Auto-Tune and Pitch Correction places where they absolutely should not. Pavarotti for just one example.
Excellent sentiment and well said. The quality of the recording can make or break a classic piece and a classic performance.
You're a really tough guy I definitely need some heavier rock'n roll in between one or two sets in order not to sleep in.

Schubert
Mozart
Beethoven
Bach

Oh, some of mendelson.
That's 9. If i had to round it off to ten, i wouldn't know who to choose. Maybe brahms has some redeeming qualities.
It doesn't mean i don't appreciate other single works of other composers.
SCHUBERT ALWAYS SINGS! No matter what he writes, even in the string quartet, we can hear that unique voice. Other composers dance but we are so spoiled to have this great composer singing! And I too sing the praises of Diogenes Quartet and Brilliant Classics. You too spoil us with this great treasure. Many, many thanks!
I agree with all you are saying.
Interesting appraisal and I agree.
There are so many great composers and I love them all for their own unique talents. But Schubert is my go-to when I wind down for the night. Not because his work bores me or makes me sleepy; it's because I just find myself so relaxed, mentally and physically, and calm and reflective.
Only a couple of ads at the start, then near 8hrs of uninterrupted musical bliss. Wow! Thanks UA-cam.
I have no adds with adblocker wich works very well...

Schuberts music is just incredible and beyond. It is such perfect and beautiful music, balanced and very listenable. So enjoyable and thought provoking. Lovely
Classical newbie here. My entry point has been these quartets. Glad to be here. 31 years young.
I suggest you continue your path through Boccherini if you like strings and modulations. But I strongly suggest your give Mendelssohn a try.
@@FelipeMatti Will do! Thank you for that advice. It's quite helpful when I'm prone to getting lost in such a large section of stuff.
Bravo! Brava!
If I hear "The Pines of Rome" one more time I think I'll kill myself. :-)
you are so right. the chance to hear the entire works of a single genius is a great gift for us listeners! thank you for your thoughtful and meaningful comments!

I know little of Schubert's music. I am more than impressed !!
Listening to this work of magical brings back such great memories of my Dad and I having beers, playing Chess or Cribbage while having great discussions. This has to be one of my all time favorite music videos of all time.
What a wonderful thing to listen to! What a respite from these troubled times! Thank you thank you thank you!

Many Thanks For This Awesome and Amazing New Year's Eve Gift Of The Best Of the Best Of String Music In The World. Schubert's Complete String Music is not just Heavenly and Celestial to listen to but only an Authentic Lover Of The Classical Genre Of Music can truly savour such Music.
For a Long Time, I have been praying for such a Gift that is the Complete String Quartets of Schubert who is one of my Favourite Composers after Beethoven and Mozart.
Such String Music is to be relished in today's fast paced world. Thanks again.
This German String Quartet does a Fine Job and is probably the best in the world along the lines of The Iconic Emerson String Quartet, Amadeus String Quartet, and others like them.

these works by schubert are very intimate pieces...thank you for the wonderful upload...

Una piccola orchestra x un piccolo gruppo di appassionati.Bravi Diogene.
Gracias Brilliant Classics.
Genius.
Completly agree with you to compare Chopin and Schubert in their own great success. Cheers from France.
Ahhh this really takes me back to the days of waiting on hold when ringing the bank. The vocals "an operator will be with you shortly", and "we are currently experiencing high call volumes" fit so perfectly with the music.
Yes, this sort of thing can be misused. But if this were the on-hold music, i would think myself blessed.
Mentre gli altri ascoltano canzonette di gente tatuata NOI ci dilettiamo nella sensuale e pulita musica di SCHUBERT !

Franz Peter Schubert ( (Vienna) 1797- (Vienna) 1828)
was an Austrian composer of the early romantic period.
"berried" - that's such a sweet spelling error.... well suited to someone as innocently wonderful and lovable as Schubert

7:23:55 epic passage
Just discovered by finding this precious "video" that I am missing Str 4tets Nos 2, 5, and 10 from my personal collection. Must remedy.
I read in a biography of Schubert that he was in love with a simple young lady, not very pretty but gentle, a singer, but he could never marry her because he was not rich enough. She waited for him a long while until she could not wait any longer.. I found this story sad sure but very romantic too ...
Amazing amazing amazing!!!

All most 8 hrs of music!!
If u listen at .75 it’s more than 8 hours!
People don't known Mozart quartets nor chamber music in general. People don't know Mozart important works.

И брошенный.
