    The problem I have with the submariner is that it’s too pretty and blingy for actual tool use, especially outdoors. It looks like a piece of dressy jewelry imo. Prefer the explorer II for outdoor use

    • @cheynewalls
      @cheynewalls  7 місяців тому +2

      Love my Explorer II and use to think the same way, that the Submariner was to pretty to be taking outdoors, but like you saw in my review, I have change my mind. Who says a tool watch can't be pretty and have a touch of luxury. I was a little nervous that it would look bad when it started getting beat up, and I'll be the first to say its doesn't look as good as the Explorer II beat up, but its an amazing watch that can fully pull off a dressy tool watch. Cheers

    I know EXACTLY what you're talking about with the crown. It also feels super heavy to screw, so it never feels like it's completely screwed into the case. It always feels like you can tighten it a bit more.
    Fun fact about the water resistance: the Submariner movement will actually be crushed by the case caving in before water starts to leak. The crown and seals are not the weak points of the watch, it's actually the strength of the steel. You can realistically take the Submariner to three times its depth rating or even more and the watch will come up completely fine.
    The only reason Rolex has 300m on the dial is for warranty purposes. If the watch fails above that depth rating, they cover the cost of service. If you send it in and they see the steel is bent, they're not covering anything haha.

    • @cheynewalls
      @cheynewalls  7 місяців тому

      Fun fact, thank you for that. Yeah, I know the crown is fully screwed it and will be totally fine at 15 to 20 meters, but I do find myself trying to tighten it a bit more every time I go scuba diving. Even tho there is no need. Cheers

      LOL, I do have to say the Submariner has really grown on me, I think I get the best of both worlds with the Submariner and Explorer II. Both epic watches, however I'm enjoying the "patina" of the Rolex Explorer II more. All those dents and scratches make it look so good. @x444How offend are you wearing it? My Submariner is around +1 when wearing it for about 12 hours during the day and take it off at night. When I wear it camping or traveling and never take it off, its pretty much day accurate. If you wear it under 6 or 7 hours a day (without windy) that could be your problem. The more you wear mechanical watches the more accurate they become.

    • @cheynewalls
      @cheynewalls  7 місяців тому +3

      Well being a photographer has taken me and my watches around the world many times to all types of environments, through deep dark lush hospitable jungles, through the Sahara desert, to the tops of mountains over 20,000 feet. Weeks of camping in forests or remote islands 100s of miles from any town. As well as diving on ship wrecks and coral reefs or exploring third world counties. Most of my watches don't survive the rigors of these challenging environments nor the constant day to day travel. So hopefully I'm providing a bit of helpful information on the durability of these Rolex watches.

      @@Pler1978 Not going to deny liking to wear my Rolex Submariner, Also tho from 20 years of personal experience and breaking around 15 watches because of extreme conditions, the Rolex Submariner is in a different league. The Rolex name means very little, give me a tough, durable and accurate watch I'll wear it. Rolex has provided that, so a wear and use it. More so than any other brand I have worn.

    Fun review! . I also own a Sub and from my ownership experience, nothing you mentioned is a stand out because any watch today at 1/3 the cost of the Sub can perform the at the same level: Oris, Longines, Sinn - can do it all and sometimes even better. A few rants: There is too much text on the dial at 6 o'clock making it look cluttered. The older two-liner Sub looks better. There are no drilled lugs (cost cutting), and it's still using cheap spring bars to hold the strap (more cost cutting). At that price point it should be using highly machined screws. There is no display case back and the case back is also not engraved (more cost cutting). It just a plain flat piece. The movement inside is not decorated (which explains why there is no display case back) (cost cutting). The power reserve is nothing to write home about as all watches today can do that and more (no innovation). The Rolex crown and name on the dial is cheaply stamped and at that price point it should be applied raised symbols (cost cutting). And finally, outer and inner boxes are hideous. The expression "you get what you paid for does not apply when you buy a Rolex", but it does apply when you buy a Longines, Oris or Sinn.

    • @cheynewalls
      @cheynewalls  7 місяців тому +2

      Thank you. Well not true, Oris, Longines, Sinn aren't near as accurate or tough, not COSO or META certificated (Rolex is both). My Sinn T50 is a killer watch, but its 8 to 11 seconds off a day. As for the rest of your rant, I disagree, for starters Rolex makes one of the toughest most durable mechanical watches out there. That is where most of your money is going. I personally don't care if you can't see the movement, don't care the movement isn't "pretty" this is a tool watch. Not having a display case back is not cost cutting, its a tougher more durable way to seal the watch. The power reserve is fine in my option and still better than a lot of other watches at that same price point. As for spring bars, I have slammed my watches into rocks and trees gone swimming, cliff jumping, rock climbing, hiking and playing golf, never had any issues.
      Now I'm not saying it is the perfect watch, and yes it might be a bit over priced, but from personal experiences Rolex makes the best mechanical tool watch. When camping in sub-zero temperatures my Rolex remained at a half second fast over 24hours. My Sinn T50 went from 8 to 11 seconds off to 15 to 20 seconds off over 24 hours.
      Like I mentioned in the video, I beat the hell out of my watches as they probably spend over 200 days a year out in the elements. So far, a Rolex is the only watch that can put up with this treatment. I have broken Omega, Breitling, G-shocks, Longines, Victorinox, and Panerai watches.
      I hear your rant, but it is cosmetic. I buy Rolex for its tool capability not its appearance. If appearance is so important to you, Yes Oris, Longines and Sinn can stand toe to toe with Rolex. I very much like Oris, Longines and Sinn (Sinn T50 is one of my favorite watches), but as a professional tool I will pay that extra for the toughness, short and long-term durability and unmatched accuracy that the Rolex Submariner provides. Cheers

    • @bigmacdaddy1234
      @bigmacdaddy1234 7 місяців тому

      @@cheynewalls The entire Longines Record Collection is COSC certified, additionally their Ultra-Chron has the coveted 'Ultra Chronometer certification by TimeLab which is a big step up from COSC. With it's high-beat movement it's even more accurate than the Rolex sub. I paid three times more for my Sub than my Ultra-Chron and for that price I expect a much better watch. But that's just my personal expectation.

    • @cheynewalls
      @cheynewalls  7 місяців тому +2

      @@bigmacdaddy1234 Oh I get it, Longines makes great watches and I would recommend to a friend as a good every day watch in a normal day to day environment. But Longines aren't as well purpose build for harsh and extreme condition which I find myself in a lot. From personal experiences I had a Longines fail on me while out in the field. Longines movements has nowhere near the tolerances of Rolex's sports movement. Again, I like Longines, great watches for probably 95% of the public, I just need that extra durable that Rolex sports models provide and am willing to pay more and not have to worry about my watch losing accuracy or failing completely.
      I have been depending on watches in my photography for over 20 years, and I can say from personal experiences with over 50 watches (I have tried they all), Rolex does having something very special about it. My Rolex Explorer II and Submariner are the ONLY watches that have keep accurate time in all conditions and not failed on me during my journeys. This makes them invaluable to me, therefor I think the pricing is justifiable for a professional tool. Rolex might appear over priced if are just wearing them to go from home to the office and out to dinner, it when you push the limits they show there true value. Cheers
