What you are saying and worrying about says less about the watch and more about you. I personally wear a Sea-Dweller Deepsea black dial. I'm a big guy so it looks like a Sub on me. It's not that I don't care what people think but more that I understand how 99% of people have no clue about what they are looking at or talking about. I'm a man who wears a Rolex Deepsea..You be a man who wears a Rolex Submariner. And together we will simply smile and walk past all the apple watches that will eventually wind up in a landfill.
It is a beautiful simple timepiece. I get the same feeling when I look at it on my wrist. Whether skiing, at the beach, out to dinner, it doesn’t matter. A pure joy to wear!
Well my friend, I’ve bought the Omega Seamaster the ( James Bond) automatic, blue Bezel, in 2001. It’s been through the wringer with me, in tool times and luxury times. It keeps perfect time, very well made, and does everything the Rolex sub does, just without the price tag. But loved by and known through the world as an exceptional time piece. I’ll never part with it and will hand it down to one of my boys. But if you want a change in color and are seeking another piece, I would highly recommend this one, if you’re looking for variety. Can’t go wrong with a Seamaster, great video, and good luck in your work and endeavors. Cheers Matt
@@torontowatches9709 you do have a point there, a little slippery, but rarely use it. But the slimness that fits over cuff, plus the helium escape valve is cool- if needed. If worth its dividends to me. A little different, but a unique time piece just the same.
I have been wearing g a Rolex Submariner of some vintage since 1968 , from my 5513 to my 124606 and every model in between. I still have them in my collection and won't ever sell any of them . I have a wide variety of different watches in my collection but I'm definitely an unashamed Submariner guy.
Hey Cheyne, love your channel! Looking to expand my collection…what’s your thoughts on the Pepsi GMT? As an artist/photographer I’m curious your thoughts on the design and even the colors of the bezel
You can't go wrong with a Rolex GMT Master II. The only thing I would note is that is a very well know and "loud" watch. I personally would go (am going for) is the black and grey bezel. A little more under the radar, feel more comfortable wearing it cities and /or to travel with. Cheers
Fun fact: Blancpain had a patent for unidirectional bezel until 1982...so all submariners until '82 was bi-directional....not too good for diver...That sad I love them both.
Its .... irritating that so many people think everyone has a rolex in their collection. It nay be a grail for nearly all collectors, but its not one that's needed. I could be just as happy with the new tudor that came out at watches and wonders or the iwc make XX. While i understand your message, if the watch suits you, then its perfect for you.
Oh I agree with you. This channel is about my watch collecting journey, and I just wanted to put out my personal thoughts and the thoughts of others to create this narrative we can all take about. Everyone is different and that is why watch collection communities are so fun.
I called my dealer while I was still on the floor of Watches and Wonders when I saw the Tudor Monochrome. I liked the no date sub and this watch hit everything I wanted out of the sub but with a Jubilee bracelet even. Only Rolex sports diver I'm still on a list for is the green bezel one which ehhh that'll be a hard sell if I get the call for it. The watch I actually take on livaboard trips is the Diver 300m anyways not a Rolex or Tudor.
Just because “everyone has the Submariner” doesn’t necessarily mean that your Sub is less special. After all it is 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 watch, that Sub is the only Sub that has experienced your adventures. Be proud that you have that watch because there many people around the world who still lust over the Submariner.
@cheynewalls Sorry to break it to people. Iconic and common are just not the same thing. Everyone might have heard of the Submariner. That doesn't equate to everyone actually owning one.
My first Sub was a 126610 like yours that I bought from the AD. I traded it for something from the so called "trinity" because I thought it was the logical step, Rolex for something higher. I still miss that watch. I took it with me on a couple trips. And yes, it was boring and became a mainstay in my rotation at the time but I've had other Subs trying to replace it and its not the same. So now I'm back on the list trying to get another 41mm since I tried the 40mm and it was not the same. Cheers!
Yeah, I hear that from a lot of people and think I would be the same and miss the Rolex Submariner if I sold it. Keep me posted on how long your on the "waiting list" if you don't mind. Cheers
@@cheynewalls Will do! I'm starting fresh with another AD since the one I worked with was bought out and they pretty much ousted their long time clients. Dang watch politics....
MY 2 go-too watches are my No-Date Sub and my Explorer II Polar 42mm. I don't wear my Sub as much anymore and agree that some people act 'off' when they noticed I'm wearing it. However, the nice subtle Polar dial of the Exp II goes mostly unnoticed. Ha.
Why are you caught up on whether people "acts off". If someone "acts off" because of the brand of watch you enjoy wearing, that sounds like an insecure them problem. If you are fortunate enough to own such a fantastic watch, wear it and screw the haters.
I opted for the LV Sub. The green bezel added the pop I was looking for. With the BLNR in my collection I just didn't have a need for the black/black Sub but I'm really enjoying the green variation. Also, if you want to wear a nice watch and not have it be noticed wear the Polar. I've only had 1 person notice in 1.5yrs on the wrist. Thanks for the video!
So well said, I've had my submariner for about 4 years and thought a few times about selling it, but it is the perfect watch and no watch could replace it. Keep up the great content!
I think I have the similar feeling of being misunderstood by people wearing my rolexes. For me, when I am going on to social meetings, I wear something that I feel comfortable being seen with. Like you said, you can wear a sub wto a luxury setup, but that mindset is looking for an allround watch. If you can change your mindset for a watch to something similar to what you would wear for clothing, then you can excuse yourself for searching for another watch that you feel would express yourself well besides a rolex. If you wearing a jacket to those social meetings, think of wearing something that won't give the too wrong of an impression to the average joe. If you insist on wearing the sub everywhere, think of why you wear a jacket or a suit to that occasion and not wear a suit or a jacket when your working creatively out in the woods/mountains. Once this mindset kicks in, and you find that sociable luxury watch, you might start considering the 43mm seadweller, or the very wearable deepsea d-blue. The sub is not boring, but probably the most versatile watch ever. But once you know, you might start to think you want more than one decent jacket or a suit, and start collecting for specific usages.
Different way of looking at it. I think the Rolex Submariner looks its best with a t-shirt and jeans, but I see what you are saying. You are right the Submariner is such a good looking watch it can good with anything I'm wearing.
@@cheynewalls Yeah man, it is. I felt that if your a one watch only person then the subs a great contender, but once you get it while your still thinking of getting just one best of the best watch only, and you start to realize after you get the sub, that maybe you may have wanted multiple great watches, then you start blaming the sub to not be so good, when its just that your tastes or "mindset" just changed.
I’m thinking the LV might make it a bit more “different” if I were to go the submariner direction. I have a 214270 which is also boring but checks the under the radar box
I have a 124060 and a 214270. If I had to choose between the two, I’d pick the Explorer all day long. IMO it’s the best watch in the entire Rolex lineup (at least it was before it was discontinued)
Love the Sub, but I added the Speedmaster to compliment my Explorer 2 Polar. I don’t think there’s a wrong answer to be honest-all incredible timepieces
Speaking generally, I think that you should wear a watch that is dialed in and specific to your style, personality, and lifestyle, not necessarily focus on what’s classic. The Submariner may be timeless and classic, but if it doesn’t actually suit you as a person, you’ll just end up looking like the people who wear Rolex just to say they wear Rolex. My .02 cents, if I had your kind of lifestyle, I’d go for the Explorer II, black or polar dial, instead of the dressier submariner. 👍
I agree, wear what suits you. Now I do think the Rolex Explorer II suits me a bit better, I do have to say tho, my Submariner it the perfect fit for when I'm going back and forth between ocean diving and black tie affluence events. The polar dial Explorer II could work for this, but the Submariner just feels custom build for these exact occasions.
The beauty part of the Submariner is the fact it is still quite subtle and fairly stealthy. It does not scream Rolex to 99 percent of the population. It looks rugged, sporty, yet can easily be dressed up and worn with a suit.
Boring is, as boring does... Glad you saw light in the end! For me, only Speedmaster and Explorer (1) get close to the breadth of use and stylistic versatility of the Submariner. Which is why they form the core of my collection. All of them can go from their specialist use (diving, performance timing and outdoors respectively) to a great restaurant, gallery or concert without change. I truly value that, because that's what I like to do and I think watches should reflect you and your values, not what randos say in bars or the herd witters online.
The Submariner feels boring for me, and yet a good design that does work. I think it's a victim of Rolex itself: forced fame, a tool that tragically became an expensive watch and worse, a status symbol. Conflicting feelings. Good video & great success in your gallery.
The truth is, it's the greatest one watch that can do it all. If you have the sub it represents so many things and because of that most people are jealous. It's a classic watch and sometimes if you've owned it for so long or wear it daily you might be just taking it for granted. Now I'm tempted to try get one 😂
Hi Cheyne, great video again! Well, let me compare it with sports cars: The Submariner is the Porsche 911 - the egg-laying jack of all trades! Of course there are other sports cars (watches) even from the same brand. They might be more unique, more interesting, of course. And it is more than nice to own them, too. But a serious watch collection, even a small one, without a Submariner is like a sports car garage without a 911! PROST my friend! 🙂
I agree Cheyne I love my Submariner green bezel with the Mark 2 bezel. I have other Rolex watches but my Sub is still probably my favorite! There's a reason why the Submariner is still and always will be the #1 icon in the watch industry wether people like it or not. Great video Cheyne!!
FAR from being boring, the Submariner is CLASSIC. Like a beautiful classic black and white tuxedo, it stands the test of time. It is near perfection. Tuxes with ruffled shirts and fuscia coats come and go like many fads...but the classic endures. The Submariner is simply a classic. Calling it boring because there is no "splash of color" is like calling an Ansel Adams photo boring.
It’s so classic that millions of people wear them. It’s literally the safest and most boring watch on the market. Nothing wrong with enjoying that but I wear watches that suit my personality. Wearing a Rolex just says that I’m a product of a $100M marketing budget in the USA alone (which was recently confirmed via court filings)
@@Greysprunkiyay This is that "stigma" I was taking about in the video. Your comment about "I’m a product of a $100M marketing budget" doesn't really make scene. Can I ask what vehicle do you drive, what cell phone do you have, where do you like to eat? Car makers, Apple, Google fast food chains spend well over $100M on marketing. With your logic 99% of people in America are a "product of advertising and marking". Why call Rolex out when all successful business are doing it?
I have several on rotation, from a skx007, 116610ln, Arnie, helm Komodo, tag f1 cal16 and a deep sea sea dweller.. everytime I wear each one I love them even more. I couldn’t do a 1 or 2 watch collection. I’d get bored.
Sold my submariner 7 years ago because it "felt boring"... I got into watches and the sub all of a sudden became boring. After going full circle I understand what you are saying. Boring is the way to go, it's the most complete watch for an active wearer. Currently waiting to get another one, refuse to go grey market so will be waiting a while. I have a SD43 to hold me over in the meantime :) Datejust, explorer 1, and OP are also excellent "BORING" watches.
Thanks for the comment, good to hear from people with experiences in the matter. Indeed, boring is reliable and that is one of the best things about the Rolex Submariner. Keep my posted on when you get your Sub, interested to hear your wait time. Cheers
"Every other person has one." "I seen 10 of the them in the wild." So you have only seen 20 people "in the wild"? I live in one of the most affluent parts of South Florida and can assure you that 50% of the people aren't wearing Submariners. Don't confuse iconic and famous for being run of the mill. The stainless Submariner is the epitome of a luxury sports watch. The iconic design is classy and extremely versatile. By the way, when the stainless bezel on your Expoler 2 is trashed, the Submariner will look good as new. I'm fortunate enough to have other high-end watches in my collection, but I can absolutely tell you there is no other watch that is as versatile as the Submariner. I can take it boating, go to the shooting range, or wear it on an evening out with a sports coat, and it rocks. The Submariner embodies what quiet luxury is about. Dude, why worry about envious Rolex haters, say anyway? Haters are gonna hate. If you can only have a one watch collection, you'd be hard pressed to find a better choice. I truly enjoy sharing thoughts with other watch aficionados. Enjoy yours in good health.
Did you watch the whole video? All those topic and points you mentioned I talked about in the later parts of the video. I love my Rolex Submariner, think it is an amazing watch. Cheers
My friend, people confuse classy and iconic with boring. When other trendy watches become passe, the Submariner will still be the epitome of a luxury sports watch for decades to come.
You should always love your sub. “This is my sub, there are many like it but this one is mine”. Bought mine in 2018 and haven’t bought a watch since. (Although I’m currently looking for an Explorer I). You have the right mindset. Don’t listen to they naysayers. It’s a great watch for many reasons and if it makes you as happy as mine does when I look at then you’ve made the correct choice.
Definitely not a boring watch. It’s a great watch and although I hear a lot of people say everyone has one, here in London I don’t see that many. Far more DateJusts. I see more Leica M cameras than I do Submariners! Personally, it’s not for me but then I have the Explorer 1 to scratch my Rolex itch and an Omega Planet Ocean to fill the Sub niche.
Wow a lot of Leica cameras and DateJusts in London, fun to know. The Rolex Submariner is a killer watch and I enjoy. You have some great watches in the Explorer and Planet Ocean. My biggest watch collecting regret was selling my Planet Ocean. Cheers
Your real world view on the Rolex is total, thank you. I, as a ROLEX owner since 1988, (was just a late teen when I got my first), know for one thing...a watch like ROLEX is not boring..that is the subjectively objective mind...especially where TOOL watches as such are concerned. It is exactly this conversation piece that we love to talk about because ROLEX stayed with the basic idea: functional, devoid of unnecessary ornamentation, the way it transmits legible and aesthetic urgency of purpose to the eyes of the viewer! Purity of minimalism and purpose, built just as the 70s Adverts in TIME & NEWSWEEK depicted...SUBMARINER is not planet ocean - those have no provenance because they are trying to follow trends, Rolex does not do that.....Design DNA is legendary, and as such, any redesign attempt must be approached cautiously with utter delicacy down to even the way the graphics and the font style is used and positioned. Once there is the movement at all, the most important aspect is the LOOKS...aesthetics, if it were not so, OMEGA would have had another story. OYSTER CASE true to purpose!
I agree with you, I very much respect Rolex for not following the trends and making very capable, robust and accurate watches with elegant designs. Thank you for your thoughtful comments.
To all your aguments i must say: "my Fifty Fathoms puts my Submariner to shame in all those categories". But no Rolex fan wants to have that conversation. Plus i can wear the FF savely almost anywere i want to go on vacation, as it still really looks like just a "functional" dive watch, not a piece of jewelry, so theres that.🤷♂. The Rolex is for when i want people to see the Rolex i guess.
@@Kilimanjahro We can have that conversation. The Fifty Fathoms is an amazing watch and I hope to own the new 42mm one day, but the facts are if you "go by the number" the Rolex submariner is better on paper. It is more accurate, COSO certified, has a better resistance to magnetism, less expensive, a better warranty, less expensive to maintain, longer duration between service, and has a better resale value. What categories are you referring to? I'm always open to a conversation.
@@Kilimanjahro I beg to differ, but that's your opinion.. Objective evidence is what I go by, as I said before, my watch has been through it all for almost 22 years without a service.. So try harder to get attention from the nay sayers, I'm not interested!
@@cheynewalls Ok we can seeing as im lucky to own both im not (too 😉)bias and this is just my opinion (disclaimer). BP does not specify their accuracy your right there. But both perform within the same parameters on my timegrapher (so tie). The FF has 3 barrels with a longer power reserve (point FF). Resistance to magnetisme none have a metal balance spring, so both are antimagnetic for normal use (if you work with very strong magnets you should get the milgaus anyway) So another tie for me. The FF is way more expensive, but no waitinglist (so both get a point here). Servicing i had Rolex wanting to replace more than i want/need on some occasions driving up the price as well (so it might be cheaper in some occasions but other not so much). Intervals (point Rolex). Now for easthetics, the FF is BIG (i mean big!)but it flies more under the radar because of its look its a dive watch pur sang, it dispite of its pricing does not come of as a piece of jewelry to the untrained eye (so "saver" to travel with) point FF. Open caseback (need i say more?) point FF. Better resale value, might be. But i tend to keep my watches anyway. So thats not a factor i include im not an investor and i dont buy bulk (i always said:with 5 im done withe the "game"😉, so choose wisely) Dont get me wrong i really like both watches, but you cant overlook the fact the "bagage" and "hype" that comes with one of them, making it easy to overlook the quality of other Brands just to be part of it. I also l;ove my Seamaster Seaweed which keeps great time and also does not attract as much unwanted attention due to the colour i guess. But Omega gives you great quality for less of a buck. Dont get me wrong i like my Rolex, but its not in a class apart like the Brand wanted me to believe. So there you have it. Just my two cents. Ps: pardon my spelling as englisch is not my native tongue.
I have a Submariner Date that I purchased from an Authorized dealer in the Bahamas in 2004 for about 5k US. The wife and I just walked in off the street and bought it on a whim. I have had it service twice now (by an authorized dealer), both complete overhauls that cost over $1000.00 each time (ouch) I definitely need to start taking better care of it. It is a great watch and I wear it everyday, as such it gets pretty beat up but the good news is that when you send it for service they buff right out.
Good to hear, interesting to hear that your Rolex Submariner need a complete over haul for each service. I have a few friends with similar Submariner from around the same time, their watches just needed a fine tuning at service. You must treat your watch real hard? I guess that is what its for. Thanks for the comments.
@@cheynewalls Yep, I was pretty hard on it, I never really took it off, I would wear it while working on my cars, boat, motorcycle or whatever. I didn't realize that they had gone up so much in value until they gave me the estimate to fix it the second time and I compared it to the cost of a new one. I will still wear as an everyday watch but I will be taking it off for some of the more harsher activities.
That is a beautiful watch. If you are bored...get a few more different watches and start a rotation. I wouldn't treat a rolex as a beater....I surf and do outdoor work with a g-shock on my wrist. Luxury watches are for light duty in spite of their specifications....in my opinion. Rolexes are sold in jewelry stores,,,,not in dive shops, sporting goods stores, or hardware stores.
True. I don’t care about scratches but I wouldn’t either as any impact can affect its precision. I dropped mine once from around 3ft. and now it’s off the superlative chronometer accuracy.
I understand what you are saying and I tried wearing a G-shock, but they always fail me in cold temps. Look back at some of my older videos (ua-cam.com/video/edZicgKknVw/v-deo.html). Mechanical watches are far better for me when I'm photographing for long periods of time in cold weather. Also I'm a sentimental guy, love looking at scratches on my watches and reminiscing, knowing I'll be able to pass this watch down to the next generation.
Since I’ve been into watches (roughly five years) I’ve seen more submarines and seamaster 300ms than anything other than g shocks and Apple Watches. It’s a great watch but it is very boring. I wear an explorer most days though, so I guess I’m boring as well.
It’s a bit like the explorer 1 in that it’s “boring” but nobody ever notices it haha. I personally like the submariner also for the reasons you listed.
The submariner is the ultimate king of dive watches . 100 years from now it will still be relevant . Love it. Don’t worry about what people think they don’t have the one on your wrist you worked and pay for it enjoy it
Why is it the "King of dive watches", is it because everybody knows it? Because it sure isnt the best or most advanced. So is it just the looks your going on?
@@Kilimanjahro Well I think it has that title because like you said it is so well know and it is one of those few diver watch that has integrated into everyday life the best. You use it for diving, wear it with a suit and everything in-between. You mentioned the fifty fathoms in another comment, great drive watch, but its 45mm was just to big for most of the public. Only this year they re-introduced a 42mm (non limited) version, therefor doesn't have that mass appeal.
@@cheynewalls Thats the "functionality" if your diving legibility is everything (the lumed bezel as well). If he means its the "king of deskdivers". I can agree with that. But i think he really meant "diving", so no, a good one, but "the King" is stretching it. IMO. In the Early days most watches were small, so the (functional dive watch size being a bit larger was revolutionary for the industry). Afterwards the dive watch has evolved with the sport/job. Rolex didnt evolve with it. Nowadays all true divewatches have a larger size because its just better if your actually diving. The sub has become more of an "all purpose watch" than a king diver imo. And "all purpose" means your good at everything, but not the best at anything. Nothing wrong with that either. Being well known does not factor in the equation for me, there are "perfect products" that few people know about. That does not make them less good, just as popularity not making anything better than it is.
@@Kilimanjahro Being honest I dive all the time and the Rolex Submariner works just fine for me. That being said I'm only going down about 20 meters with it. What in the deepest have you had your FF?
The Rolex Submariner is an amazing watch. Like I talked about in the video, what other watch has a 300m diving depth, accurate to +2 -2 seconds a day, extremely tough and durable, iconic and is a luxury timepiece that will last many many decades if you only maintenance it every 10 years?
To require a purchase of ANY particular watch to qualify as a “true” collector exhibits a fundamental misunderstanding of what it is to be a collector.
Hi Cheyne, I think the issue with the submariner is all the clones can make it a bit boring Could be time for some colours on your wrist Taxi for the Sub and time to get on the GMT bus
Great point, I was reading somewhere that more clone Submariners sell in the world than real Rolex Submariners. One day I'll put some color wrist, you might be a bit disappointed in my new watch :).
Explorer 1 may be perfect for you. So low profile. I absolutely love my Submariner. Yes, everyone knows what it is and it SCREAMS ROLEX. I have a polar 16570 as well. Much lower profile. I couldn’t care less who else has one.
That fact is the submariner is the best. We as watch collectors just need to be grateful that we can even afford these watches and be able to experience them. Every watch you buy has a purpose and you bought it for a reason. Do not sell your watches to find something better. Because that better watch will become boring at some point too. Enjoy your watches. Any watch can take a beating and keep on ticking. But what watch has more history than the sub? Not many. Keep it and enjoy it. I am celebrating my four years with my sub soon.😎
Very good, I see there you are coming from. I will never sell my Rolex Submariner it has become sentimental to me and it is such an amazing watch as you know. Cheers
I grew up poor but always had a thing for watches. Always wore one since about the age of 10. Eventually I earned enough money that I started considering adding a Rolex to my collection. ...but looking at them, they just don't do anything for me. Just very plain and boring. I can't help but think it's just a brand name. A status symbol. If you have the money, and it makes you happy, I get it, but I realize now that its not for me. So many other things to spend my money on that bring me more joy.
@@LastBastian that is timepiece correcting. Through personal experiences I can say Rolex watches are some of the most accurate, tough and reliable watches I have ever used out in the field. However it is all down to personal opinion about there looks are plain or if you think they are a symbol of some sort. Either again the fun of watch collecting.
My Dad wears his Sub for about 30 Years (every day) It's beat up AS hell but it works perfect. The sub ist a great tool watch. But i have to choose, I will take the Explorer 2 🙂✌
I got sooo bored about my 41mm Submariner after just 3 months of owning. Fortunately I got it from my Rolex dealer at retail. I decided to sell it and got a Rolex Batman in Oyster (also at retail from my AD) and honestly couldn’t be happier. No regrets here 😊
I’ve been wearing a GMT since October 1967. For over half a century I have seen a Pepsi on my wrist. My 2022 submariner and my 2022 new Pepsi. The sub is on the watch winder and the Pepsi pretty much is on my wrist all the time. Soon as my AD calls me to tell me my Daytona is in. The sub is gone.
Sure plenty of people wear them, plenty of IG posts of immaculate unmarked subs on coffee tables, but mate wearers like yourself - who wear them hard and for a purpose, is the reason why they are so cool.
I agree, I have been nothing but impressed on the toughness of this watch and have become for impressed with the elegance of its design of these last 8 or so months. Cheers
So many haters on the Submariner, it’s the most iconic watch ever! Wear yours in good health and enjoy it. I wear my 116613LN daily, can care less what anyone thinks, I just love design, history bracelet clasp how it wears everything about it is perfect and love the warmth of gold, worked hard to buy it don’t care about the status garbage and I have a 216570 Polar dial compliments the Sub and best travel watch. If you ever get too bored of your watch update to green bezel or a big F-U- piece like the Submariner Blueberry.
Hearing from people you can, I'm in Hawaii in a few weeks, I'll try going into a Rolex AD that doesn't know me and see if I can obtain a No Date version.
12:27 In no universe are you walking into the Rolex store tomorrow and buying a submariner. They're not selling a submariner to Joe schmoe, a walk in customer without making him wait. Either he's going to need to wait (who knows how long and without any reassurance) or he's going to need to start a "relationship" (I.e. Purchase history). So these fantasies of these everyday people getting married or going on some dive trip and being able to walk into a Rolex store and buy a sub on the spot are, well, nothing more than fantasies 😂. So no, that's not remarkable.
Its different in all parts of the world, I'm getting comments from people walking into ADs and getting a Submariner. Hell I have had two friends after watching this video, walked in (with no purchase history) and got a Rolex Submariner. Tell you what, I'm in Hawaii in a few weeks, I'll try going into a Rolex AD that doesn't know me and see if I can obtain a No Date version Submariner.
I could literally name over 100 watches that could do all the things you listed the sub can. I could name probably 100 that cost a tenth of the price too. It’s amazing how Rolex marketing really does infiltrate peoples ability to be rationale. It’s the true genius of the brand.
OK great, please name watches that have 300m diving depth, accurate to +2 -2 seconds a day, extremely tough and durable, come with a 5 year warranty, are iconic and is a luxury timepiece that will last many many decades if you only maintenance it every 10 years, oh and sells for more than retail on the used market?
Love the content as always. The Sub is a Sub, its the watch I feel its the one watch that all others are compared to. I have to say though, I have been told I am close to the top of the list for a sub, im still in two minds as Im not sure as I wear a shirt 99% of the time.
Less is more!! this watch is a timeless classic that will transcend generations to come . This watch is what the other divers aspire to be . The king of diver
You can get creative if you want a Rolex Submariner. You can get the no date version. You can get a neo-vintage. You can get a different color. You can get a Sea-Dweller. They all look (somewhat) the same, and yet they're all different. My grail watch is the 116600 40mm Ceramic Sea-Dweller. It's a Submariner Date without the cyclops and 4x the depth rating.
Just sold my speedy because a. I got bored and b. hated that they did moonswatch. Also sold my bb58 and now I'm rocking an 16570 polar and couldn't be happier
@cheynewalls hey, man, thanks for your reply. In short, emphatically, yes, I do. They milked the cow dry for me with that one. I had just bought a brand new 3861, my grail, it was beautiful 😍. But then the moonswatch. I was ashamed of my speedy, it felt cheap and dirty. Still took me a couple of years to move on, but in reality, it was never staying. Rolex would never do something like that, a plastic homage.
@@bernardwadding6290 Thank you for sharing that. Yeah I'm hearing that a lot from watch collectors. And I'll be honest, I was pretty close to getting a Speedy and then the moonswatch came out and I'm not a 100% why, but it did make me pause and lose a bit of interest in the Omega Speedmaster.
@cheynewalls yeah, man, you have good taste, some cool watches. I've been watching your channel since I considered buying a 16570 and you influenced me in part. Subbed etc You dodged a bullet with the speedy imo
@@cheynewalls If you love the Submariner then definitely keep it. Based on your activities I thought the Bremont MBII might be a good option for you. It is shock resistant and also waterproof to 100 meters. They even have a customize option. I do not own one, but it is on my list. All the best.
@@tacticaltruth8118 Keep me posted if you get one, would like to know your thoughts as I'm getting alot of request to review that watch. Might try to fit in a Bremont MBII later in the year, but we will have to see.
Who cares what others think? Boring is classic, not subject to transient fashion ideals. Is definitely a good, versatile watch! From diving to the boardroom. Also, I don’t see many people wearing Rolexes, even though I live in a city with millionaires and billionaires. You’ll be surprised how few people care about good mechanical watches. Most wear rubbish ones or the stupid iwatch…
@@cheynewallsI do agree that in most major cities of the world u can't just walk in and get a sub. Wait, don't you already have a submariner date though? (same exact watch just with a date function). You're going to spend another 10k to get the same watch just without a date complication??
@@blakehirsch1022 We will see if it is attainable. I hear from a lot people they were able to just walk into a Rolex AD and get a Submariner, I hear from others that their ADs tell them a year or two to obtain a Submariner. This will give me personal experience. Yes, I have the date version, the no version however could be a good "investment" watch as well as fun to compare the movements, looks and accuracy to the date version. I do this to make my channel unique, true first hand experience with watches that I own, not borrow for a week or two.
The Submariner is divisive. There are those that have one, and love it. Then there are those that don't have one and they hate it because they wish they had it!
Funny, never really looked at it in that way, but you are right. Maybe not wished they had it, more they can't see past the hype element to how great this watch truly is. Cheers
I have had a different experience, a lot of my friends aren't into watches. However seeing me wearing mine, they know it. I wear a lot of watches around them and the Rolex Submariner is the only one they (almost all) have known and commented on it. I'm just speaking from personal experience.
I would not chop wood with a mechanical watch! Good tool watches can be on your wrist for 99.9% of activities; chopping wood, driving golf balls, hot showers, mountain biking you probably want a quartz watch.
I have had to give up on quartz watches, a lot of issues with the batteries dying on me when I'm in sub-zero temps. Like when I'm snow camping or mountain climbing. I wear my mechanical watch all day everyday while I'm out in the wilderness and haven't had any issues. They are a lot tougher than most people think.
Its different in all parts of the world, I'm getting comments from people walking into ADs and getting a Submariner. Hell I have had two friends after watching this video, walked in (with no purchase history) and got a Rolex Submariner.
A great watch, I personally prefer a date function since I'm traveling so much. I really like the Tudor Pelagos FXD, but I don't think it is as refined as the submariner. Prefect tool watch, just for me falls a little short for affluence events. That all being said, I want a Pelagos in my watch collection.
Why does everyone always complain about the Submariner being too boring?! The Submariner is and always will be the best looking watch of all time. It's been my favorite watch since I first saw it in 1984!
@@sinjinadams2862 Sorry to hear that. If you are interested I did just purchase two new Rolex watches and signed a deal with another Swiss watch maker. All those watches will start being featured on this channel in the future.
I have a 2022 AP royal oak chrono which is always losing time, date wheel issues etc. Once you wear an unreliable timepiece, the Rolex Submariner suddenly becomes much more special. I’ll take my sub over the royal oak any day of the week!!!!
It is a very satisfying thought to know that your mechanical watch is keeping accurate time no matter what you put it through. If you don't mind me asking, how far off is your AP over 24 hours?
@@cheynewalls 15 seconds per day. Been like that from new. The first week I got it the date wheel got stuck and I had to send it back to AP. Then 3 months late the chrono wouldn’t reset so had to send it back again. My Sub has been running like a dream for the last 5 years. Obviously there are guys out there that had been daily wearing their AP for 10 years plus without any issues. It’s just my experience.
Not sure Glenn, depends on its year and it condition. Check out Bobs Watches or Watch Finder to see what they are selling similar GMT "Pepsi" Masters for.
I wouldn't get a submariner because i always see people with them. They are everywhere. But rolex as a whole isn't special. They make 1.4MM per year. It's an assembly line watch. That's why I lean Vacheron, grand seiko, zenith, etc
Like I mentioned in the video, why do you care that everyone has one? Yes, Rolex makes a lot of watches, but from my personal experiences out in the field they are the best mechanical tool watches for what I need in a timepiece. Very tough, durable and accurate. I tried both Grand Seiko and Zenith, nice watches, but not good tool watches. I think Rolex is very special because they are the only brand that have multiple watches that are both a tool watch and a luxury timepiece.
@cheynewalls Dang man. Don't get mad at me. I was just saying that, imo, they aren't special. They are good watches though. They are the Lexus of the luxury watch world. Fancy Toyotas. And I care that everyone else has one because I want to be unique. I want a luxury watch because it's luxury. I want the feel of luxury. Which means something that many people don't have. And every fundraiser.. 25% of the room has a rolex. They are good at marketing.. convincing everyone that they are rare watches or hard to get. Nah. They aren't. That's why we see hundreds/thousands for sale online right now.
Dude it seems it does bother you. I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer but I think you should move on from it and into something new. The fact you’re even considering it I’m my experience means it’ll be going…..at some point.
Like I said at the end of the video, I love my Submariner. Yes it crossed my mind, but thinking through it there is no watch that could replace it. Cheers
Its all in good fun. This channel is about my watch collecting journey, and I just wanted to put out my personal thoughts and the thoughts of others to create this narrative we can all take about. Everyone is different and that is why watch collection communities are so fun.
Why do you care what anyone thinks? Not everyone has that watch simply because MOST people won’t spend $10k on a watch. This is a classic most copied watch in history.

Bought my Bluesy 3 years ago and I still admire it for minutes each time, several times a day :D
Perfectly stated.
Oh I agree, and that is what I tried to touched on at the end of the video. Cheers
I’ve been in this hobby for a long time. Don’t ever sell that watch. You’ll regret it.
Oh a 100%, I would never sell my Rolex Submariner. Love that watch. Cheers

Cheers Matt

Thank you for pointing that out, great fact. Cheers
Its .... irritating that so many people think everyone has a rolex in their collection.
What would be a watch that’s needed in these modern age?
If you’re broke just say so
No one needs a luxury sports watch.

Thank you, just over 7inches.
Just because “everyone has the Submariner” doesn’t necessarily mean that your Sub is less special. After all it is 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 watch, that Sub is the only Sub that has experienced your adventures. I wish everyone had the submariner. I don’t and I want to join everyone else 😂
Oh a 100%, like I said at the end of video, Love my Rolex Submariner. Cheers
@cheynewalls
Sorry to break it to people.
Cheers

Ha.
Right there with you, both great watches and so interesting assumption when wearing a Rolex Submariner. Cheers
Why are you caught up on whether people "acts off". If someone "acts off" because of the brand of watch you enjoy wearing, that sounds like an insecure them problem. If you are fortunate enough to own such a fantastic watch, wear it and screw the haters.
@@rafaeloliva6425 I never said it bothers me to wear my No-Date sub... but read into it whatever you like ;)
I opted for the LV Sub.

I have about a dozen watches including Rolex, vintage Hamilton, and Omega. The Sub is my favorite.
It is an amazing watches, one of my favorites as well.
@@maruataro9960 Good point, the Rolex Submariner is so good, that it might be to good. Truly a victim of it's own success. Cheers
I’m thinking the LV might make it a bit more “different” if I were to go the submariner direction. I have a 214270 which is also boring but checks the under the radar box
Yeah, one of the great things about the Rolex Submariner is there are a lot of options, vintage, color and metals to pick from.
You are right there is no wrong answer, all incredible timepieces. Cheers
I would argue that nothing SCREAMS Rolex like the sub date
The Rolex Submariner can do it all and so hard for a watch to look both rugged and sporty, yet can easily be dressed up and worn with a suit. Cheers
Exactly the opposite. Everyone knows what it is.
Huh?? The submariner “screams Rolex” more than any other Rolex in existence. Great watch, but it’s about as “Rolex” as you can get.

I 100% agree with you. I love how all the watches you mentioned have a certain purpose, but they can also do it all. Great watch collection! Cheers
The Submariner feels boring for me, and yet a good design that does work. I think it's a victim of Rolex itself: forced fame, a tool that tragically became an expensive watch and worse, a status symbol. Conflicting feelings. Good video & great success in your gallery.
Thank you for those kind words. Yes, I agree with you and well said. Cheers

I agree, Like I said in the video, It's elegant simplicity makes it not boring and so very special. Did you watch the whole video?
It’s so classic that millions of people wear them. It’s literally the safest and most boring watch on the market.
Nothing wrong with enjoying that but I wear watches that suit my personality. Wearing a Rolex just says that I’m a product of a $100M marketing budget in the USA alone (which was recently confirmed via court filings)
@@Greysprunkiyay This is that "stigma" I was taking about in the video. Your comment about "I’m a product of a $100M marketing budget" doesn't really make scene.
So thats not a factor i include im not an investor and i dont buy bulk (i always said:with 5 im done withe the "game"😉, so choose wisely)
Dont get me wrong i really like both watches, but you cant overlook the fact the "bagage" and "hype" that comes with one of them, making it easy to overlook the quality of other Brands just to be part of it.
Sometimes boring is good.
Try on the 43mm Sea-Dweller. Way more interesting than a sub and it wears like a 42mm
I really like the Sea-Dweller and was going to get it over the Rolex Submariner, its just to big for my 7inch wrist.
It’s a bit like the explorer 1 in that it’s “boring” but nobody ever notices it haha. I personally like the submariner also for the reasons you listed.
I agree with that. Yeah the Rolex Submariner is a special watch. Cheers
The submariner is the ultimate king of dive watches . 100 years from now it will still be relevant . Love it. Don’t worry about what people think they don’t have the one on your wrist you worked and pay for it enjoy it
Cheers, like hearing that. You are right, its a killer watch and I'm going to enjoy it to the fullest.
I felt that watch was boring the first second I saw it. I just don't get it.
@@cheynewalls No, I get that it's technically good. I mean that visually, I never got why people like it. It's boring to me.
@@kirkwcowgill Personal taste, I get it. Thanks for your comment.
To require a purchase of ANY particular watch to qualify as a “true” collector exhibits a fundamental misunderstanding of what it is to be a collector.
That is exactly why I use quotations.
@@cheynewalls yeah same. I agree with your statement. 🙂👍🏼
@@UltraDoug Cheers
I mentioned this to my AD the other day and my AD said something interesting: "It's not boring, YOURE boring".
Did you watch the whole video? The Rolex Submariner is an amazing watch and I love it!
I completely agree with you
Cheers
Absolutely think the Rolex submariner is the most iconic watch in history. It is my favorite watch and I’m one year into savings to purchasing one.
I agree with you. An amazing watch and you wil love it. Cheers
Hi Cheyne, I think the issue with the submariner is all the clones can make it a bit boring
Could be time for some colours on your wrist
Taxi for the Sub and time to get on the GMT bus
Great point, I was reading somewhere that more clone Submariners sell in the world than real Rolex Submariners. One day I'll put some color wrist, you might be a bit disappointed in my new watch :).
Explorer 1 may be perfect for you. So low profile. I absolutely love my Submariner. Yes, everyone knows what it is and it SCREAMS ROLEX. I have a polar 16570 as well. Much lower profile. I couldn’t care less who else has one.
Well put, "couldn’t care less who else has one". Cheers to that. Stay tune you might see the Rolex Explorer 1 soon ;).
Still my grail. If anything you can wear it for free because of the value it holds
Oh it’s a great watch, I love it!
My Dad wears his Sub for about 30 Years (every day)
It's beat up AS hell but it works perfect.
The sub ist a great tool watch.
But i have to choose, I will take the Explorer 2 🙂✌
Both amazing tool watches. Can't go wrong with either one. Cheers
I got sooo bored about my 41mm Submariner after just 3 months of owning. Fortunately I got it from my Rolex dealer at retail. I decided to sell it and got a Rolex Batman in Oyster (also at retail from my AD) and honestly couldn’t be happier. No regrets here 😊
Both great watch, I can see that, the Batman has a bit more flash on the wrist.
Explore 2 > Sub
Both Great watches, I am a bit more sentimental to the Rolex Explorer II
I’ve been wearing a GMT since October 1967. For over half a century I have seen a Pepsi on my wrist. My 2022 submariner and my 2022 new Pepsi. The sub is on the watch winder and the Pepsi pretty much is on my wrist all the time. Soon as my AD calls me to tell me my Daytona is in. The sub is gone.
Sounds like you have a great watch collection.
Cheers
That’s why I got the green bezel “Starbucks” version. Perfect blend and when you do see other subs it’s normally a black bezel version.
The "Starbucks" version is a good looking watch. Cheers
It's still not as iconic or as versatile as a 124060.
Well said. The Rolex Submariner is an amazing watch and I am looking forward to wearing my for decades to come. Cheers
12:32 They can't. Not available.
Hearing from people you can, I'm in Hawaii in a few weeks, I'll try going into a Rolex AD that doesn't know me and see if I can obtain a No Date version.
Simply the best watch you can have.
Cheers to that!
I’m 1 and done with my explorer 1 ❤
An amazing watch, I love my Rolex Explorer

You can get creative if you want a Rolex Submariner. You can get the no date version. You can get a neo-vintage. You can get a different color. You can get a Sea-Dweller. They all look (somewhat) the same, and yet they're all different.
My grail watch is the 116600 40mm Ceramic Sea-Dweller. It's a Submariner Date without the cyclops and 4x the depth rating.

I had my doubts about the Rolex Submariner, but I'm enjoying it more today than ever.
Just sold my speedy because a. I got bored and b. hated that they did moonswatch. Also sold my bb58 and now I'm rocking an 16570 polar and couldn't be happier
That is watch collection. Can I ask, do you think the moonswatch "cheapened" the Omega Speedmaster?

Cheers
No. A regular person that is not into watches doesn't know a Sub. They do know Rolex is expensive and blingy, but that's about it.
I have had a different experience, a lot of my friends aren't into watches. However seeing me wearing mine, they know it. I wear a lot of watches around them and the Rolex Submariner is the only one they (almost all) have known and commented on it. I'm just speaking from personal experience.
@@cheynewalls I guess it can differ depending on the country you live in
I would not chop wood with a mechanical watch!
12:39 This person can't either. Not available.

What about Tudor Pelagos FXD. Good value for a similar function.
