Hypertension can actually cause hyper emotions and anger, at least in my experiences of close family members. Once they got it under control, the temperament change was noticeable. This turns out not to be the case for Papa Evans in this episode, however.

The sad really is that the working poor often have shorter lifespans because they can't afford healthcare and the stress of keeping a low paying, often stressful and difficult job leads to health issues and then theirs the constant worry of losing what little they have including a roof over their head.
Though this was a good show, I had enough hollerin' from my own family so I didn't want to watch this when I was younger since that wasn't entertainment, it was real life....

Lucky you. That was exactly my father and later my brother prior to getting on high blood pressure meds and changing thier diets. Sometimes they did not even realize how upset they were getting.
