Great scene, but you have to wonder what was going through John Amos' co-stars' minds as this unfolded. They knew that he had been fired from the show due to creative differences with Norman Lear and the production staff. And it must have been especially awkward for Jimmie Walker. One of Amos' objections was that the character of JJ was too negatively stereotypical of young black men, yet was the most popular among all the characters.

They found out that James was actually the heart of the family as well as the show. Although he never admitted, Lear had to know that firing Amos was a terrible mistake that lead to the show's downfall.
@@lwmson The departure of Amos was indeed a mistake, although JJ later did become a responsible and accomplished commercial artist who held the family together when Florida temporarily left the scene.
