I choose to abstain and I do not regret that. Growing up, I had an alcoholic uncle who drank himself into the grave and this served as an example to me to avoid it altogether. For all I know I could be an alcoholic too, but I avoided that, thanks be to God.

Yes. If you struggled with drinking do not drink again. A few men in my church had drinking problems, so they completely gave it up and will admit if they have a drink it would be sin. But at the same time they do not cast judgement on anyone else in our church who can have a drink (without getting drunk) with a clean conscience.

That's what I think as well. I think it's alright to have a Snickers, but you shouldn't binge on candy. I think it's alright to have a glass or two of wine a night, but you shouldn't get drunk. Even with natural (not artificially engineered) marijuana, I don't think it's anymore unhealthy than sugar or alcohol and I think we have the freedom to enjoy the relaxing and pain relieving benefits of it, but we shouldn't get high out of our minds. Most things are alright in moderation, though I'll be honest, I don't drink or smoke so I may not be the right person to comment on it.

@@TheMidnightModder Interesting perspective, Modder. I was not expecting you to reveal that you don't drink or smoke at the end of your comment. It seemed like someone trying to defend their habits. My perspective is a little different. I think it's best to abstain from all forms of intoxication. Some people are better than others when it comes to balance, but from my own experience with friends and family, 'balance' so often leads to over indulgence. My stance is- if you aren't interested in intoxication, why partake in drinking or smoking, at all? It just doesn't make sense to me. Social drinking also doesn't really make sense to me. Why do something you don't want to do just because others are doing it? Why get together if it is not going to be fruitful? or if 'drinking/smoking/etc' is the main activity? I realize I sound pretty black and white (and 'no fun'), and that is probably true. Maybe I just struggle with balance! I am an ex-pothead and used to drink (although not too much). I have a hard time relating to my old friends now because they are not interested in bettering themselves.

@@michaellemmen That's where I land too. I think we have the freedom in Christ to enjoy the fruits of the cane, vine, and plant, but for people who are likely to take it too far, like those of us who have struggled with addiction, it's best to not touch it at all. I've greatly minimized my sugar intake, can't stand the taste of alcohol, and will never try pot in case I like it too much 😂

"The Son of Man came eating and drinking..." He admitted as much Himself. But drunkenness on the other hand, is an abomination. As one who used to abuse alcohol myself, I would often cherry pick Bible verses to justify my habits (e.g. Eccl 9:7). However, by the Grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ I have been delivered from alcoholism, and never again will intoxicating beverage touch my lips. It is a stumbling block to many, but not an outright sin unless abused in such a way to cause drunkenness or cause another believer to stumble.

I wish Baptist Christians would stop judging other Christians for drinking wine. Drinking wine itself isn't my sin, but my thoughts and words can be. Nobody sees me sinning when I'm thinking, but if someone sees me drinking wine, they immediately judge me. And it's often fellow Christians doing the judging.

Toxic and other adverse effects of alcohol on organs and tissues in humans (Figure 1) are largely a consequence of its metabolism to acetaldehyde, and associated formation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, depletion of co-factors (e.g., NAD+), and impairment in energy homeostasis [4]. Because of the considerable redundancy in the oxidative enzymatic pathways (alcohol dehydrogenases, CYP2E1 and catalase) that can convert alcohol to acetaldehyde, most tissues are capable of alcohol metabolism, even though liver is the primary site. Likewise, acetaldehyde dehydrogenases are ubiquitous in the mitochondria.

THANK YOU! I’ve been pulling my hair out listening to the scriptures get butchered over this. If “the Son of Man came both eating and drinking…” he’s not going to all of a sudden, at a celebration of all things, turn teetotaler. Also somewhere in psalms or proverbs it’s stated that wine is a gift from God but there are also warnings about over indulgence. If instead of there being a straight out, spelled out prohibition of fermented wine, it instead warns of getting drunk, it certainly sounds like, while given with a warning, we are still allowed to partake.

If you drink Alcohol responsibly and in moderation, there is no wrong in drinking alcoholic beverages. If you cop up a buzz by total accident, even if God deems it to be a sin, ya gotta remember that we sin everyday anyway. Even a white lie is an act of trespass and all trespasses give the death penalty. Only Jesus can wash our iniquities away.
The best answer I personally can give is... try to avoid it if you can. If you feel like you're catching a buzz, take that as a sign you should stop immediately. If it's something you run into every time you drink, then that's a sign you probably shouldn't consume alcohol.

We forget that wine and beer we’re commonly consumed because clean water wasn’t always available to trustworthy for you to consume, especially while traveling out of your home territory where your gut was used to the stuff in your own local water. Tourists abroad today are still encouraged to avoid drinking tap water for the same reason. Jews saw wine as a gift from God (they have a specific prayer of thanks for wine before drinking it) and as a substance worthy of offering to God in the temple (the priests placed a quart of wine in the tabernacle and temple with the 12 loaves of bread every day). They still use wine as a normal part of weekly worship and annual festivals. What they didn’t want was for people to engage in drinking excessively as was common in the cultures and religious cults around them. That was one of the cultural patterns Christians tried to set themselves apart from and is probably why the early churches first developed traditions of avoiding wine and or alcohol.

In the ancient world, however, to quench thirst without inducing drunkenness, wine was diluted with water to between one-third and one-tenth of its strength. Due to the climate and circumstances, even “new wine” fermented quickly and had an inebriating effect, if not mixed (Acts 2:13). Because of a lack of water purification process, wine mixed with water was also safer to drink than water alone. While the Bible condemns drunkenness, it does not necessarily condemn the consumption of wine.

I would never be led by a pastor that claims that the mere partaking of alcohol is a sin. If that pastor is so wrong about this issue, what else is he wrong about? This is a deal breaker if someone claims to be a Biblical shepherd.
And I don't really drink. I'll have a single can or bottle of beer once a month or so.
I even had a pastor that agreed it was not a sin, but required the deacons, groundskeeper, and security volunteers to abstain. I left that church as well. He based this decision on "Avoiding the appearance of evil". If Jesus and Timothy weren't concerned about avoiding the appearance of evil in relation to strong drink, then how can we justify this concern? If it's not evil, then why are you avoiding it to "avoid the appearance of evil"?

Did you even watch the video? He presented a bullet proof case that you're 100% wrong. Why would the Nazarites take an oath to avoid alcohol if everyone took that oath? Why would the Pharisees see Jesus drinking and say He is a drunkard if He wasn't drinking alcohol? Why would the lord of the wedding feast be pleased by Jesus's wine if it had no alcohol? Clearly, since everyone was drunk, he wanted alcohol. Why would Psalms tell us that wine is meant to lift men's spirits? If it's just a grape, wouldn't all fruit juice have the same praise?
But what about the communion wine? How did they get drunk on communion wine if it contained no alcohol?

I have mental blockages/troubles when trying to separate or combine Saving Faith in Jesus Christ/Righteousness versus what does scripture say about this… & is _____a sin according to the Bible, & what did Jesus/John/etc say about that….

    • @justinbrentwood1299
      @justinbrentwood1299 2 роки тому +1

Faith is what matters, and a strong faith is what makes a holy person, but there is more to it than just that. Jesus didn't say that faith is what will set us free from sin, but the truth (John 8:31-36), and Paul says that faith comes from hearing the word of God (Romans 10:17). Faith needs to be put into something: in this case, Jesus, but to put faith in Jesus, you have to know Jesus. That's why we need knowledge to put our faith in.
The reason we can't just say, "I'm saved, so I don't have to worry about doctrine because I have the Holy Spirit guiding me," is because we aren't perfect (see Romans 7:14-25). We may misinterpret a feeling to be the guidance of God, so we have to continue (actively, as Jesus said in John 8:31) in his word to know what is righteous and unrighteous. The Bible doesn't give us so many teachings for no reason.
Many people think that God is guiding them, even many false Christians. On the day of judgement, many Christians who have done great things, even miracles, will be cast away (to Hell) because, even though they thought they were righteous, they weren't, and it shows in that they love a certain sin or sins (Matthew 7:21-27).
2 corinthians 13:5 tells us to examine ourselves, to see if we have a saving faith, one that actually changes us to righteousness and not letting us continue in sin (1 John 3:9-10). There's nothing to examine ourselves by but ourselves (not very reliable) or the word of God (certainly true). That's why we should go to the Bible for all our questions.
If you haven't read the Bible, I recommend that you start with John 3:13-21 (Jesus's clearest explanation of the Gospel) and the New Testament. :)

Hi, I recently learned at bible college that the first translation of the word for pressed grapes was wine and was nothing compared to how we make "wine" today. When something was alcoholic/fermented it is translated strong drink. Could you verify this, please?
Dr. Henry Morris states in one of his books that the Greek word "oinos" was used for fermented and unfermented wines and the context determines which.

Nothing wrong with drinking wine or beer as long as you exercise self-control and do not get drunk. But if drinking will stumble a WEAK conscience christian, then do not drink in front of the WEAK conscience christian. (1 Corinthians 8:9-13 Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak. For if someone with a weak conscience sees you, with all your knowledge, eating in an idol’s temple, won’t that person be emboldened to eat what is sacrificed to idols? So this weak brother or sister, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge. When you sin against them in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause them to fall.)
Because if a christian believes that drinking is a sin and he gives in to what he believes is a sin, he has sinned in the area of lack of faith and NOT in the area of drinking. (Romans 14:23 But whoever has doubts is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.)

Many people i know drink alcohol to feel the effects, not just because it taste good. I am trying to reach out locally with many people suffering and lacking basic life needs, like homeless, and jobless people, and inviting them to different churches and bible studies, and the biggest common denominator, is alcohol. Also there is the spiritual aspect of using alcohol. Many of these people using alcohol are in bondage and trying to cover up past traumas and current hardships, and in doing so, they are opening spiritual doors for demonic spirits to dwell within them and feed off of them and that is why helping them with there daily needs is never going to cure them, only inviting the Holy Spirit into them through faith in Christ Jesus can do that. This should be our main focus while reaching out to those people suffering in bondage to alcohol, as well as all other mind altering, body destroying, man man and natural chemicals and substances.
If Jesus allows us to alter our minds with alcohol, then does He teach us how much is acceptable before it is a sin?
Either way, you must admit that alcohol has caused much harm and many deaths and hardships and ruined many lives.
Why would any Christian want to partake in this destructive, man made, mind altering, chemical?
The word “alcohol” is said to come from the arabic term “Al-khul” which means “BODY-EATING SPIRIT” , also, is the origin of the term” ghoul.
In alchemy, alcohol is used to extract the soul essence of an entity. Hence its’ use in extracting essences for essential oils, and the sterilization of medical instruments. By consuming alcohol into the body, it in effect extracts the very essence of the soul, allowing the body to be more susceptible to neighboring entities most of which are of low frequencies. why do you think we call certain alcoholic beverages “SPIRITS”?
If Jesus allows us to alter our minds with a processed man made fermented chemical substance like wine, where did he permit the use of beer or grain alcohol?
When did Jesus turn water into beer or rum or vodka?
We have allowed major jumps in conclusion based on one or two bible verses like Paul encouraging all Christians to drink wine because of our stomach pain, but that was Paul writing directly to Timothy, but we have incorporated that verse to promote and allow the use of all alcohol.
Either way, you must admit that alcohol has caused much harm and many deaths and hardships and ruined many lives.
Why would any Christian want to partake in this destructive, man made, mind altering, chemical?
In the mighty and wonderful name of our Lord God King and Saviuor: Christ Jesus, we pray: Amen, Hallelujah, Peace, and Maranatha.

That’s not true . He says to stay away from strong drink . Yes he did make wine at the wedding . However scripture states that he told Peter I believe to drink a small bit of wine to cure his upset stomach . They called grape juice wine as well back then . He is not telling scripture truth . Go to Geno Jennings on UA-cam for the correct in-depth verses on drinking it is a sin . An JESUS would not be holy if he drank .

"oinos" is a generic term for product of the grape, but in the Hebrew, Gods position on alcoholic wine is very clear. And the New Testament writer use phrases from the Old Testament linking back to show God's position on alcohol.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree!! I cannot and will not believe that Jesus made more fermented wine for people who were already drunk. Think about it, you claiming that Jesus, the one who came to set captives free made more wine for those who were already intoxicated. Doesn't seem too likely that he would condemn drunkenness and then supply more fuel for the fire.

I don’t agree, if Jesus provided a party of alcoholic wine He would be putting people in a place to sin. The party had already had wine. So moderation is out of the picture. Jesus did not provide them alcoholic wine. Also “fruit of the vine” quite literally refers to fresh grape juice.

Not necessarily. It may be for you (and me too) but not for others, but is if it causes another believer to stumble. Drunkenness, on the other hand indeed is always sinful.
"It is good not to eat meat or to drink wine, or to do anything by which your brother stumbles. The faith which you have, have as your own conviction before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin." Romans 14:21-23

Jesus didn’t partake in drinking fermented wine. Do you know that first miracle of NEW wine reflected the covenant that would come at the last supper…
You know: what Christian’s do “take this bread and eat… this is my body… take this cup and drink… my blood.”
Do you really think Jesus made the guests 300 gallons of fermented wine?? Do you think the guests tasting that wine wouldn’t want it because they couldn’t get drunk off it?
    Lol. No.
-> Clean Water was very difficult to get in Judea. It’s desert land. Even children drank grape juice.
Imagine drinking 8-10 12oz glasses of fermented wine a day~ or giving fermented wine to children at a wedding.
    Even non-Christians know this fact. Come-on. 🤦🏼‍♀️
