•This is a hard topic because so many have different interpretations and reasons for their views. Addiction or having been delivered from an addiction is a huge reason some preach the complete absence of wine while others may see the clear verses where wine or alchohol is permitted for medicinal or even celebratory purposes. When Jesus said it's not what goes in that defiles a person but what comes out, in my opinion, applies here. Drunkenness can lead to loss of inhibitions and bad decisions harming yourself or others physically, mentally or spirituality. Having a drink to calm your nerves or because of a sickness to many is not sin and not condemned in the bible though many people condemn you to hell for the first sip. Moderation in anything we do is key.
•The fact is that more people die from bad diet than alchohol through a slew of medical issues such as heart problems or diabetes is also something to consider if health is your argument. In fact, food can be a strong addiction of its own. Ask the men and women who are always searching for the latest diet craze and why they can't stick to their diets.
•The miracle of water into wine had to be alchohol. Look at what the steward says in John 2 closely...
9 When the head steward tasted the water that had been turned to wine, not knowing where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), he called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the cheaper wine when the guests are drunk [literally intoxicated] . You have kept the good wine until now!”
Now I was a worldly man before I came to Christ so I understood clearly what the steward was saying. The good wine had alchohol in it to the point it got people drunk. Then when they were to drunk to taste the difference, the lesser wine in flavor or quality, not nessessarly alchohol content, would be brought out. Jesus gave them the better quality wine than they had in the beginning which had to have alchohol as well, though some will argue it was just better tasting but alchohol content is part of the quality of a good wine as well. Saying that it's a process to ferment wine as an excuse to prove it wasn't fermented really doesn't apply to a man who raises the dead or God who made the processes to begin with.
So there are many things to consider here instead of casting someone aside as evil for even a sip. I do not condemn the person who has a drink because the bible doesn't but I say if you have a problem with it personally, dont do it. If you are around someone with a problem with it, for your conscious sake and especially theirs, don't do it around them. Self control for your brothers and sisters isn't to much to ask of us to keep things civil. If you can't use self control, you could have a problem.

The bible clearly states that drunkards shall not inherit the kingdom of heaven and have their portion in the lake of fire so why should you even try sips just because the ultimate goal is to get drunk? What is the point of drinking if one wants to stay sober? Yes we must not judge you for drinking but alcohol is a thing of the flesh and will eventually work against your spirituality. Also take note of what he mentioned..... progressive revelation. Some things where done and allowed to stay not because they were right but because God has been revealing Him self progressively see Col1v26-27. Remember how Lord Jesus stopped eye for an eye? And consider the scripture he mentioned "Do not be drunk with wine where in excess but be ye filled by the Holy Ghost..... If I am filled with Holy Ghost there is no place for alcohol. Now alcohol and intoxicants reduce your independence which God wants you to have when making decisions and choices and even when you worship Him. You have to be yourself. The reason why God said those who will take the mark of the beast will not be saved is because they will totally lose control and will stop being their selves. Addictive things somehow have the same effect and destroy your soul hence your spirit .

If He says it, let do it.
For anyway we are not more holy than Him and living for Him is enough .
Jesus can't tempt people anyway by giving them alcoholic drink. But Hé did gave it to people in John 2. So let be disciples.( Its' enough for a disciple to be as his master). Top much opposing arguments desn't help in solving the matter.

I'm still in my first year at an UPCI church, so I have lots to learn. I asked my Pastor directly about an occasional hard apple cider with my friends and his answer was "why?". I had no intelligible reply other than "I like the taste", so I just shut up. I imagined a cold non-alcoholic cider would taste fine and felt silly for asking. My friends won't judge me for having a soda instead, so "why?" was a GREAT answer...my Pastor is so wise.

David K Bernard I have a couple of things to note on this. I also believe we shouldn’t cherry pick verses. When Jesus turned water into wine immediately following this scripture in John ch2 we read this “And He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.” And they took it. When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. And he said to him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!””
    ‭‭John‬ ‭2‬:‭8‬-‭10‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
Their practice in this time was to give the guest the good wine and when they had their sense of taste dulled then the cheap wine would be brought out. If this wine was not fermented then their taste would not be dulled and after tasting good grape juice it would make the change very clear. Second thing to note is God gave Moses the Torah which includes all of laws. So to suggest that they were not able to handle these laws is incorrect. God was the same then now and forever more. Furthermore when bringing your wine as a offering to the place where God lays his name (tabernacle or temple) actually say if the journey is to hard for you then sell your tithe and take the money and buy what your heart desires for oxen or sheep, or wine or intoxicating liquor. Deuteronomy 14:26 now this verse is translated differently in different bibles but strongs translates it as a strong drink. There was actually a distinction between the juice and wine in Hebrew, but through translation it was all translated as wine. This is where strongs concordance comes into play so we can correctly distinguish the two. We are not commanded to drink alcoholic beverages, but we’re obviously permitted to do such. Now if you are addicted to alcohol then God may personal convict you not to because it is a weakness and a stumbling block to you. The issue I have with saying your not allowed to is it is our job to bring Jesus to the Jewish people and the lords festivals permit you to drink during them so this is preaching that Jesus goes against the Old Testament which according to the Old Testament would make Jesus a false prophet. How ever Jesus does not go against the Law he is the physical manifestation of the law.

Let's look at it from a logical perspective. Why do people want to drink alcohol? To relax, unwind? Does your glass alter your clearness of mind, even slightly? Alcohol is a mind altering drug.
Can Christians take mind altering drugs for the purpose of chilling out? If so, can we smoke a little weed to chill out? The wine in the bible was nowhere near as potent as today's wine. Technically it's a not a sin to drink strong drink, it's all about the context. 'Give stong drink unto him that is ready to perish'. Strong alcoholic drink was to be used for medical purposes not for getting tipsy.
David Bernard is 100% correct !!

That said, food, the key ingredient, is essential for sustenance of life. Therefore, the teaching is MODERATION! Alcoholic beverages are totally non-essential to sustenance of life, therefore ABSTINENCE is the teaching! Consider the impact of each as well. 😊

Drinking alcohol has NEVER benefited society - instead it has always brought in a degradation of society. It doesn't get you closer to God. It doesn't make you holy. It doesn't promote sound thinking. It doesn't produce health.
How much alcohol, how many drinks does it take to make an alcoholic.
Alcoholism starts with ONE drink - JUST ONE.

I don’t disagree that it is best to just stay away from anything that may be destructive to our Christian witness. Problem with this discussion is that he says right at the beginning that we shouldn’t cherry pick and take things out of context, then he proceeds to do just that throughout.I’m not saying that as Christians we should drink, but I could refute every point he makes. This is not a good example of why we shouldn’t drink alcohol, just a traditional way of saying alcohol is forbidden for Christian’s. He would do the same thing with dancing, playing cards, going to the movies, etc.

Again, brethren let us always stick to God's Word. Let us not add nor subtract from His Word.
It is very clear, even Jesus made wine in His first miracle, He also drank wine, it was not fresh grape juice, but fermented juice hence it was called wine, because in the Bible times (where refrigeration has not existed yet) you cannot keep a fresh grape juice for a long time, since it will either spoil or turn sour and become vinegar.
Jesus was even called a winebibber because the pharisees saw him drinking alcoholic wine.
Luke 7:34 KJ2000 -- The Son of man has come eating and drinking; and you say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!
Even Paul was clear with his instructions to Timothy to drink (alcoholic) wine because it will help his stomach, and may help rid of germs/bacteria in the water that they drink.
1 Tim. 5:23 KJV -- Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities.
Again, the Word of God is clear, drinking wine perse is not a sin, but being excessive or given to wine, or getting drunk is the sinful act.

I was bemused in the early part with the comment ‘that in the Old Testament people didn’t receive the Holy Ghost, they didn’t receive inward power...’
A close examination of the OT shows that, at least privileged people DID receive the Holy Ghost (Spirit) and did receive power. The Temple priests of the Solomon era were baptised in the Holy Spirit (experienced the Shechinah manifestation as it is described in Jewish literature) and in 1 Kings 8:11 and 2 Chronicles 5:14 we have graphic descriptions of this. They ‘could not stand’ which is just another way of saying they were ‘slain in the Spirit’. And do we really believe that Moses, Samuel and a host of prophets who heard God directly or through an intermediary like Gabriel were not imbued with power? Once we wake up to the fact that the main difference in the NT was that Jews en masse were baptised in the Spirit and that this was followed by the Gentiles having the same experience (the mystery Paul spoke of) we can truly get the correct picture of the history of Holy Spirit / Shechinah experience amongst Jew and Gentile believers. It sure is inspirational, but it might challenge many Pentecostals who have an unscriptural understanding of ‘tongues’.

Simple question is: Why would anyone want to injest anything that has the potential for addiction, impairment, or bondage? I also believe the death statistic is much higher. My wife works as a nurse and most of the cases she works day in and day out involve alcohol or drugs. Even if you can control your intake, what about your son or daughter that observes and emulates you? Addiction to food, unfortunately, is just about as bad.

Have a drink, relax, go to the movies. Going to the movies too much and neglecting your duties is bad as well. All these things are good unless you are an addict (alcoholism). For those poor souls alcohol is to be avoided completely. On that point I have no disagreement. I am not an alcoholic and enjoy alcolhol in moderation as it is supposed to be enjoyed.

You literally answered yourself: "why would anyone want to injest anything that ahs the potential for addiction..." Then you say, "addiction to food is just about as bad." It's actually worse. 100,000 more people in the USA die each year from obesity than from alcohol. So it's like asking "Why would you injest food?"
EVERYTHING has the potential for addiction. Food, alcohol, sex, money, power, etc. That doesn't make the thing itself bad: it's when we misuse and abuse God's gifts that it becomes a problem. It's like Dave Ramsey used to say, "A brick can be used to build a hospital or smash a stained glassed window. The brick doesn't care... it's just a brick." We can't avoid doing everything, so the key is always moderation in everything. With sex, confine it to biblically married people. With money, confine it to providing for daily needs, savings for the future, giving to the poor, and growing God's kingdom. With food, meeting our nutritional needs. Alcohol... enjoying one of life's simple pleasures.
Some people are predisposed to alcoholism due to family genetics. They ought not drink, or if they do, only in very careful moderation. Always get a designated driver, etc.

Yes the whole debate is stupid. I have heard those who claim that alcohol is evil state: how do you know what is too much? How much alcohol is OK? Well anyone who eats food knows what moderation means, it is common sense. Every individual knows what is too much alcohol. They also know that too much coffee is bad. You cannot expect to drink 20 cups of strong espresso a day and expect to be healthy.

Also when Jesus turned water into wine. I believe it was fermented due to the fact of Scripture stating that those at the wedding made mention that the best wine was saved for last. Because generally the best wine was used first and the notably cheaper wine was brought out last Because by then the people wouldn't know the difference. But it was noted that the wine at that particular wedding the latter wine was even better than the first, which was not common practice.

Bingo, good uses of context to exegete the passage rather than torturing the text to arrive at a preconceived notion.
I ask those who says Jesus never drank wine why people accused him of being a drunkard? If all he drank was grape juice, that would be the lamest accusation ever and no one would take it seriously. He would be known as a tee-totaller. Thus, we are left to conclude he drank what every other person in Ancient Judea and the Roman empire drank: fermented wine.

The same could be said about sugar, coffee, junk food, and pharmaceutical drugs. This conversation never ends and it leads to legalism. Walk after the Spirit and you shall not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. This means having self control and not getting drunk, not being a glutton, or a sugar addict. Drinking alcohol isn't the issue, rather the heart of man is the issue. Funny how some people focus so much on smoking and alcohol but don't consider the food they eat or the pain medication they take. There is a difference between drinking a glass of wine and a bottle of wine, just like there is a difference between a gluttonous man and a man who practices self-control.

I finally agree with David Bernard on something. He does an excellent job of explaining the problem with alcohol and wine for a Christian. I have strong opposition to his misguided teaching on the “oneness” doctrine, so to be honest and fair I agree with the truth he has gained on this subject of alcohol.
I have noticed that truth to many people comes based on a mixture of what God reveals in His word to a born-again Christian mixed with a delusion of self interpretation. So a person can be very wrong on some truth of God’s word and at the same time hear truth in another area as they accept God’s revelation without diluting it!
Only God has all truth, Jesus is the Truth but we all look through obscure glass as we seek to be accurate in our understanding.

Jesus made strong vine which is fermented and has more alcoholic content.
"Then he (master of the banquet) called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” John 2:9-10
Choice wine or best vine is aged wine with more fermentation. Did Jesus set a wrong example by making people drink a strong alcoholic drink? These people are trying to set their own holiness which is from the world.
Matthew 11:18 also disprove these people.
I do not drink alcohol but I don't think the Bible condemns drinking wine. Moderation is expected. Drunkenness is definitely a sin.

The Bible says, "No drunkard will inherit the kingdom of God." The Greek word translated as drunkard is methusos, and it means to get tipsy. Websters says, tipsy means slightly intoxicated. Why risk eternity in Heaven with Christ for alcohol. As far as Timothy being told he could drink for medicinal purposes doesn't really apply today; we have grocery stores and pharmacies that sell all the medicine we need. Don't drink; you won't need to worry about drunk driving. Don't drink; you won't need to worry about becoming an alcoholic. Don't drink and you won't have to worry about drunkenness disqualifying you from eternity in Heaven. Also, it is obviously a bad witness.

It is obvious that the "excess" that the apostle Paul is referring to in Eph. 5:18 is the drunkeness from wine consumption and not the wine itself, as Dr. Bernard errantly implies @ 7:59. There are other scriptures that indicate this same admonition from the apostle Paul (not given to wine, not given to much wine) where he regulating, stops short of prohibiting. However, as Dr. Bernard points out, the potency of Bible times wine would've been considerably less than today's fortified wines. Perhaps 16 oz. of Bible times wine would have been a common and allowable beverage, whereas the same amount in today's wine would be sin (drunkeness). The UPC is not the only denomination to massage the meaning of scripture on this particular subject to emphasize a strict abstentious position (Nor is this the only subject to receive such treatment). This position however, is not altogether unwise; even in O.T. times the Rechabites refrained (Jer. 35:1-5).
