I grew up in an American Chinese restaurant and I’m one of those kids juggling between school work and working at the restaurant. It’s hard work, long hours, and I’m really grateful for my parents’ hard work so that I can have a better future. Thanks for recognizing and paying homage to American Chinese food; reinventing and giving it a modern take. Thank you.
Yes! People be hating on American Chinese - it deserves its respect! It's not "fake" Chinese. It has its own fascinating story. Also, I love how enthusiastic the hosts (Dave and Andrew) and the guest (Lucas) are. It's like he truly has something more important than his business that's on the line... Reppin' us well!
I agree like Italian American food, it can be done well and delicious. I eat authentic Chinese, Chinese American, traditional Italian, and Italian American food.
I really liked his comment about US Chinese food being no less authentic, just a different region. It really made me see it with a different perspective. Now I'm craving some panda express. Would love to be able to try this guy's restaurant some day.
Panda express is garbage its an american fast food chain. If you want something like his chinese food in the video you are better off getting authentic chinese food instead.
@@chaikagaz You literally missed the entire point of this video and of this chef’s restaurant and mission. You might want to watch it again instead of just trashing American Chinese food.
every dish on that table looked like it was made from high quality, fresh ingredients. the beef lo mein and general tso's definitely made me feel some kind of way. well done Lucas! much respect for the passion you have for American Chinese food
American Chinese food reflects the resourcefulness of those generations of Chinese who came to America before us. They made due with the ingredients they had to create dishes in America which reminded them of home. Those who owned Chinese restaurants in the US also knew one of the fundamentals of business....that is to conduct business to stay in business....in other words, to cater to their customer's tastes so they will return. Much respect to the generations of Chinese who came before us and created this amazing version of Chinese food..."American Chinese Food". We should be proud.
Mad respect to the Fung Bros and the chef trying to preserve this unique part of Asian-American culture. You can tell the chef has a ton of pride in his work and he's not trying to replace the traditional stuff, but making what seems "outdated" into something awesome!
"It's not about replacing what was before. It's about evolving it." "American Chinese food is authentic. It's just not traditional." American Chinese and Chinese American food. I think there needs to be another video that delves deeper into the difference.
Yes it is Chinese food since it was first made by Chinese immigrants during the building of the railroad across North America! Go read and educate yourself!!
His hot take on American Chinese food should be considered regional Chinese food and just as authentic is inspirational. It really changes the game and will influence all the foodies who were haters.
Can you guys do Chinese-Korean food(jjam ppong, jja jiang Myung etc.)next? Even better if you can interview them about the identity conflicts they may have
WOW!!! It looks so fresh and great!! I have always loved Chinese food, I make sure I find the place that has the freshest, like I do with all other restaurants. He really has a great love and respect for the culture and the food! Thanks FUNG BROS!
Many of the Chinese food in America that does not exist in China do exist in the Philippines (beef brocoli, chopsuey, egg rolls, Chowmien noodles cooked in American style, orange chicken....etc.)
When Chinese immigrants came over with gold rush and railroad work they had to continue to make a life for their families. They opened restaurants. The railroad is all over the us so, that’s how you get a Chinese restaurant in every place. They then created a Chinese network of info on what works and what Americans like to succeed. That’s why American Chinese food is evolved to the common popular food culture we know. Then that opened the door for Panda Express then P.F. Chang’s
YES 👏 Chinese American and Chinese Chinese food are different, have some similarities but from two different regions like he said, America v. China. Great video, no shame in liking/eating both! The chef was great in explaining and defending the foods!
Has anybody heard of Brandy Fried Chicken outside of Sacramento. I grew up in Sacramento and used to get brandy fried chicken all over town, When I moved away 20 years ago I couldn't find it anywhere. I eventually went looking for it online. All mention led to Frank Fat's in Sacramento. There was one mention in Monterey (interestingly where I was living at the time) for brandy fried chicken wings, so I went and tried them, and they were nowhere near as good as what I was used to, I could not find mention of it anywhere else. Curious if anyone anywhere else is familiar with it. It seems strange as you could get it at almost every Chinese restaurant in Sacramento, you could even get it at the Chinese food counter in supermarkets.
Baked Char Siu Baos were another thing I have only seen in Sacramento. The were baked to appeal to American tastes, and you could find them all over town. I was surprised to find them to not be common elsewhere. I can only find steamed Baos.
Wow that must have been an exclusive Sacramento dish, since I live SF and never heard of it. I have had baked char siu baos though in SF. One place makes it in cupcake pans so there was a meat in the cup part and a big domelike top. Sometimes different chefs make thing their own way and when they retire the recipe’s gone. I had amazing Mongolian beer from this one place that used cabbage instead of scallions and whole dried red chili pods, it was everyone’s fave dish but the restaurant was sold to someone else and that was gone for ever.
In the UK we have Chow Mein on the menu but i don't recall ever seeing Lo Mein - so what's the actual difference as they both looked like the same thing?
my dad owned two restueants in San Rafael Santa rosa Brings back memories. preperation and the pots and pans are the most important, I used the wok very little , I prefer hibachi grill . But Lucas is the best
I grew up eating Chinese American food living in San Diego, CA, and I definitely love it. My favorites growing up have been all the fried rice & low mein dishes, kung pao chicken, Mongolian beef, salt & pepper chicken wings and walnut shrimp. And of course orange chicken! ❤
What a great video. Would love to try some dishes! My personal favorite dishes is diced dark meat chicken with honey walnuts. This dish is becoming harder and harder to find. I would say I see it on maybe 1/10 Chinese American menus nowadays. Done the right way, this is perfection!
in some Latin countries: pegao or concon or in my mom's country, they call it cocolon. (the crispy rice stuck on the clay pot or bottom of your rice pot)

It wasn't until I learned the history of Panda Express and actually ate there that I realized I judged them too soon. Panda taste as good as some "authentic" dishes.

Almond Boneless Chicken is my favorite. I’m from Detroit, so that dish is more of a Michigan and maybe Ohio staple. How can you not love fried chicken smothered in gravy?
Does the Shrimp with Lobster Sauce have real lobster in it like the real orange in Orange Chicken? It costs 17.99, it should at least have the essence or small pieces of real lobster.
I love the Mapo Tofu...everything looks delicious! It's nice to eat Canadian/Chinese food once in awhile...we call ourselves CBC's in Canada...Canadian Born Chinese. 👍🇨🇦😉 It's all similar...American or Canadian/Chinese food. 😊

American Chinese tastes amazing! People get upset because it is not authentic but it’s not supposed to be!
