Nice old Wilcox Crittenden head. I have a similar Wilcox Crittenden head on my 1972 Allied and it is still going strong after 48 years. I believe mine is a Junior II.
Another awesome video guys. The former Coast Guardsman in me is freaked out to see that kind of boating proximity with no life jackets. You guys are nuts!
Wow! Your head pump was made right here in Middletown, CT. Out of brass. At one time, CT led in the production of brass items. Sorry to hear about the chainplate. Good thing the mast did not collapse in those strong breezes. While stainless should never corrode, this type of corrosion is called “crevice corrosion” where the stainless is starved of oxygen by caulking or wetness. Careful when you re-bed them. Catalina Direct stocks just about everything you need, call them to get exact details to replace your chainplates, shrouds and clevis pins. They’re great folks and have all the measurements and exact parts you need, even if you hire somebody else to do the labor.
One of the best parts of sailing is racing. Doesn't matter if you're on a sailboard, a cruiser or an AC75, charging the starting line is pure adrenaline. (Though I imagine the AC75 would be a lot more intense)
Your videos are great, thanks for the shout out and putting my link up. Clear Lake and Galveston Bay are great places to sail, we did two races just this last weekend. I got some good clips of "Free Enterprise" in the Rum Race on Saturday that I'll put in the next video. Dani says she's going to get Ben out racing with us again soon.
You're the man!!!!! Your videos are great and have helped inspire me with my own boat project and videos! I'm only 3 videos in but looking forward to sharing more with everyone!
I worked for a plumbing company in my teens. The building that they wee in was 4 stories and the elevator was a water powered Otis Elevator circa 1903. We replaced the seal on the master valve that summer. The seal was oem from Otis. A leather seal.
I had a 75 Catalina 27. I found out the decking was soft right where that chain-plate was. I thanked all that was holy that I found out before we were out on the water. Having a chainplate rip though the decking would be a major catastrophe.
It's all fun and games until something breaks :) Our first real sail(2 years ago), we put the mainsail up for the first time and got a gust of wind that pulled the traveller rail out. Quick drop of the sail and carried on with just the foresail. Hoping to get our boat back in the water in time for July 1. Cheers from PEI Canada, Bryan
I recommend You do the rigging Yourself. On a smaller boat like the Catalina it´s a piece of cake and it will be good experience. After that You will know everything about standing rigging. A further improvement and most likely cheaper is to buy just a spool of Dyneema. The only thing with Dyneema is the tentening and tuning but if You keep the turnbuckles in place You have the best of both worlds
Please do me a personal favour: Can you polish the brass head pump up to shining? It's sailor's tradition to keep every metal part shining for inspection 😉🙏
Great video. If you going to redo the rigging have you considered synthetic? I have just started looking at it for my boat. From what I have read it’s weight is quite a bit less than stainless and you can do most of it yourself. Watched a video from Tulas Endless Summer channel. Was really interesting.
Was wondering if you greased all internal parts to the head mechanism? Seems like the leather and plunger are going to get the worst of it so I would use a heavy duty marine grease....
Hello you find all can the cool stuff 😎, I'm your neighbor and I can't find nothing, too funny. I continue to look for a boat 🚢 no luck jet . Let me know if you see any arround. Stop by i get you a beer 🍺. Saludos
Well if the chain plate is the only thing that broke and no body got hurt, that is not to bad. Could have been a lot worse. Specially if someone would have been standing next to it when it snapped.
Thank you to everyone who checked out Sailbros.com! Be sure to read our Covid-19 update to see the latest info on shipping times. Take it easy!

Nope, they're Texans!

My 1965 A35 came with a Groco Type K head. Loved you rebuilding the Wilcox Crittendon head.

Anytime! And yeah Ben is gonna get back out there!

Very cool. Never heard of a water powered elevator before!

We have a WC Skippper II, best damn head out there, we had to rebuild and had it Powdercoated With a marine finish. We love ours

Glad y'all got to carry on with the sail! Good luck getting your boat ready. Cheers!
BOAT stands for Bring On Another Thousand!!!
I like the sail racing vids..
Great vid guys, keep at it, that pump looks pretty stout.
The local Yacht Club here used to have Wednesday evening beer races, six pack of beer entry fee, winner took all and had to share:)
The best kind of races!
leather cups were at one time very common with larger irrigation pumps, stuff in the area of 6'-8" in diameter
We have a few hi-mod fittings on our rigging. Pretty nice and easy to use. They’re pricey but reusable.
Wow, I’ve never seen a chain plate break!
Yeah, pretty crazy!

PFDs during any race should be mandatory. I like your vids so please demonstrate safe practices so you can keep making them.

Impulse 21, fun boat to race on.
Oooph. You broke your back up boat! Glad no one was hurt!
Yeah could have been much worse. Oh well, more reason to get Corky back onto the water!
Just out of curiosity you gonna also get quoted on switching to dyneema? Small boat like that might be cheaper and easier to work with.

Yeah it's something to look into. We're definitely keeping our options open. Thanks for watching!
Awesomesauce

I greased everything thoroughly. Thanks for watching!
I wish I had money like you guys.😢

Shit yea!! Been waiting for another vid
Thanks! There's been a lot going on. We'll get back to more regular uploads!
Happens all the time, old boat unused, first minor stress, rig collapses. Better to do it first.
You can buy rigging for a Catalina online, don't have to get it custom made
Thanks, good to know.
The two happiest days of your life: The day you buy your boat and the day you SELL your boat
No boating video complete without that quote...
Check out Catalinadirect.com for parts. I looked and found chain plate replacements for that model.
Just moved to El Lago and wanting to get into sailing, anybody willing to take a greenhorn out and teach him.

Yeah we were very lucky.
Pretty sure those are a wearable part every so many years or decades you have to change them or inspect them
Spot on! We knew that the rigging needed to be replaced just did not realize how bad it was. This was the second or third time we had sailed the boat.
How can I have your stickers ?
Just head over to sailbros.com!
