Love checking out abandoned or nearly in this case industrial sites. It is wonderful to see how people lived and worked in the past. Thanks for sharing, see ya next time.
Thanks for checking out the video! We really enjoy checking out these places as well, the BC coast is littered with abandoned industrial sites, industry towns and debris of a bygone industrial era! We’ve got a couple on the list to check out this year! Hope you’re well!
You tube algorithm at work. Blue Moon sailing who is from your area also on a Cat. 30 posted , and your channel came up as a suggested. Loved it and a new sub. Have fun
Also the heat that all the modular working all the time provided enough heat to keep the building temperature hot . Some people did it in an old church in Qc Canada .
My ex wifes parents had a summer home in the Martin Valley in the early to mid 2000's. During that time a fellow named Jimmy, operated the local store that would get supplies once a month by barge and only was open once a week or more if someone needed stuff he would open up. The dam sells power up the coast to bella bella, the last time I was there.
Lovely, it's very beautiful there! When we spoke to one of the locals at the lil gift shop there she told us food was still being barged in. If we remember correctly residents could order what they wanted on their own and simply pick it up when the barge arrived. Hydro is indeed still run to Shearwater and Bella Bella. Thanks for watching, cheers!
Great video. I found this off the back of the Ocean Falls video. I'm not sure how it would be received by the remaining residents but I can't help but feel it would be a great site for an eco vacation project. Not a huge resort style thing but a lodge or cottages sympathetically built wit the surroundings and employing local people. The long journey up the side of Vancouver Island and ferry out there would be more of a feature than a chore. Kind of a destination for those that want what Tofino was twenty years ago.
Thanks so much, so glad you enjoyed it. Agreed, our ‘ outsider perspective’ is also that the area could be revived with more eco-tourism projects (moving away finally from extraction based industries that have left it as we see now). Folks are increasingly interested in seeing this part of the world and immersing themselves back in nature. The accommodations in Ocean Falls are very limited currently and it would be great to see things move in a more immersive, eco-focused direction. Nearby Bella Bella/Shearwater seems to be moving in that direction led by the local Heiltsuk people.
Definitely need to add that ghost town to my list for retirement next year (2025) when I head south. Just brought my new to me sailboat from Washington to Seward last summer. Stopped in Shearwater and Bella Bella. Anxious to see your video on those. Great video!
10/10 would recommend! Especially if you’re travelling through around the end of august, make sure to hit it up for the pig roast and fishing Darby! We go to shearwater and Bella Bella in your next video, stay tuned!
Thanks for another great episode! I agree with @kempknapman9291, Ocean Falls is going on the must visit list 🙂 Also really like the "cruiser's cooking" part!
It’s a super neat place to explore, really glad we decided to stop in and check it out haha retrieving the drone while under sail can be really challenging (depending upon the conditions) we typically use a fishing net to catch the drone while under sail and just catch it in hand while at anchor. We will have to release all of our drone catches as bloopers at some point, they’re pretty amusing to watch!!
@@AllisonandJamesSailing Yes, please. We'd love to see the blooper reel. I'm also a UAS pilot but very intimidated by the "hand catch," especially on the boat. :-)
Thanks for the tour. I used to go into the Falls as a teen over 55 years ago while commercial fishing. There is an Olympic games story from the swim club that is impressive As to the Bitcoin commentary, if you would like some balanced and more current information about its benefits, I would be pleased to provide some. It's not what you think. Happy travels and again thanks for bringing back some memories.
You’re welcome! Very cool that you were in and out of there back then! The number of Olympic swimmers OF produced is pretty amazing! After watching this one reached out to us about filming there reunion in OF! We felt we portrayed a balanced view of the bitcoin aspect, but maybe it didn’t come across that way. We’re open to hearing more about it for sure, it’s certainly interesting!
Awesome adventure into the past and present in this beautiful post apocalyptic town. I’m shocked all the residents moved away as it looks like paradise, except for the dam looming overhead! That would really creep me out, especially knowing that this is a subduction zone just waiting to pop!
Thank you so much, so glad you enjoyed it! Agreed, super idyllic community situated pretty precariously, perched below a dam on an edge of a serious mountain slope! Very cool boom bust boom town
Ha. I lived in Ocean Falls for a year or two, around 1970. What a weird place it was, but absolutely unforgettable. A shame what's happened to it. O well...
Thanks for the tip! Fish heads are gold, wish we had some at this point in time. They bay was teaming with traps full of said bounty so I’d say our crab friends had no problem abandoning ours like the Martin Inn.
Enjoy most of your presentations, but this one is very representative in its content… just thought I’d let you know my thoughts… John… Ontario, Canada…
Thanks, love the Ocean Falls vids. That density of baby toads in season is everywhere in BC, not just the coast.
Thank you so much for your generosity and support! We really appreciate it

Loved this video. So sad to see such a wonderful place abandoned like she was. May 2024 be your best year yet
It’s a pretty tragic tale! We have some big plans for 2024 so stay tuned :) wishing you a fabulous year as well!!

Interesting! Crazy how much heat is produced

Awesome, def worth checking out on the adventure North! Really glad you enjoyed that, cheers!
Yep I used to work in Shearwater back in the day. It was called the Fishermans Inn at that time.
awh, that's really neat!
What an amazing place to visit. Love the drone shots. How challenging is it to retrieve the drone while underway?

So glad I visited this place before all the UA-camrs with their drones discovered it. Pretty soon there'll be a latte shop there with Starlink.
That would be a great thing for the town! Thanks for watching, cheers!
Ocean Falls is a beautiful place! Great video

Octopus will clean out a crab trap left out overnight. I usually only set mine for 2 to 4 hours. Fish was a good bait as was beef.
We've had the most success with salmon carcasses. Thanks for watching, cheers!
Just discovered your site. Accidently watched your Aus-Nz video..! Now a bit of revision required...Something Charming about your posts..Many Thanks.!

Love hearing from folks who have lived there! We like to imagine it was a little quirky but amazing. It’s sad to see it in such disrepair!
Tyvm crazy place but beautiful. Ty from Squamish BC
Ocean falls is crazy beautiful! Thank you for watching!
Another great video, cool town gave me mini Chernobyl vibes. Editing is top notch, keep up the good work :)
So glad you enjoyed it, thanks so much!
I love these vids. I hope to get to sail the same route with my family.
So glad you’re enjoying them! Love to hear it. We hope you’ll get to sail here with your family soon
They were building a land based fish farm in Ocean Falls in the early 2000's. Wonder if they ever got it working?
Yes I believe Mowi has a fish farm operating there...and that they helped fund the causeway and new dock infrastructure
To hell with fish farms (and crypto miners - money laundering criminal enablers). Beautiful place that should be reclaimed by nature, tbh.
@ right there with ya! See ya never fish farms! ✊🏽
Those crab traps the crabs have no problem opening them and leaving if no food. If using that type use a fish head and they will stay till there full!
Thanks for the tip! Fish heads are gold, wish we had some at this point in time. They bay was teaming with traps full of said bounty so I’d say our crab friends had no problem abandoning ours like the Martin Inn.
Hmmmm I do not remember all the frogs either. Maybe they moved in when they closed the town lol
Lol that's our theory as well
It would have been interesting to get a tour of the bitcoin operation. I guess security would be pretty tight. Loved the video. Love you 😘
Lovely
Thanks for watching, cheers mate!
Great video!!
Cheers! Thank you!
Destination adventure covered the story from that town
Yes we seen that!
You guys deserve a few extra zeros on your subs. Top class. Love ya work!
Awe thanks so much!!!
Awwwww I want to go back.
It's a pretty special area. Hope you get to make it back some day soon!

Thanks John! Hope you’re keeping warm in Ontario this winter!! Thank you for your kind words!
I saw a house for sale ad in Ocean Falls for only $150K, as a Vancouverite I was excited until I saw it's a ghost town.
Yeah 150K for what it is/what's there now is a bit of a tough sell haha although the place does have a lot of potential?
A dozen years ago, 2 or 3 houses there were only $60,000. Inflation I guess: f Joe Biden! Haha.
It is interesting despite the bitcoin mining company not being great
The juxtaposition is pretty interesting. Thanks for tuning in, cheers!
can i buy property here
Probably!! Might be the cheapest on the coast💫
Think of how beautiful this landscape would have been without that dam there ruining the sorrounding environment
A beautiful prolific salmon river💫
Yeah, but the dam is actually pretty much the only reason anything is there anymore.
@@stinkfinger630 yep those are indeed the trade offs
To hell with Bitcoin miners
👍🏽
What are they mining? Ha, maybe your user name and password.
Hope you enjoyed the video, cheers!
