What went wrong with my first ever Corn Crop at planting time: REDEMPTION possibly? (5-6-24)

  • Where to begin...I made some mistakes that have really showed my lack of experience and rookie status. But with me trial by fire , it is now burnt into my mind on what not to do again. Not sure the weather will cooperate long enough for me to gain anymore ground, but we are going to give it a shot. If it doesn't work, then at least we are ready for next season!!

    These two are amazing in all they do, thank you all!!

    All of the issues you had happen to us all at one time or another, so don't sweat it Nelson.
    Today was in the mid 70s instead of 86° like yesterday, that was pretty hard on me. I got twice as much done today as yesterday. I hope round 2 goes well for you. 😊👍

      Really appreciate the encouragement Adam, I can't believe I didn't triple check or at least check spacing. I was more concerned with depth, but a valuable lesson learned! Thank you sir, I hope to try it this week between rain 😁 I know what you mean with the weather, sounds like you have been super busy!! Thank you again my friend for always being here!! 😁😁👍👍🌽🌽🌽

    I look back at our first year on our homestead. Our garden was a MESS! We didn't know what we were getting into. The weeds..... Five years later and we're light years ahead of where we were. You need to look at this as a five year plan. Next year you'll be better and smarter. Within a few years, you'll be an expert. I'm glad you're not too discouraged. Learn from your mistakes and keep a journal of teachable moments and hints for next season. You're doing great Nelson! Cheers!

    The most important thing is to not get frustrated- its a learning process and everyone makes mistakes. One thing I have seen guys do is set the row marker so that you drive with one of the front tires on the line instead of trying to keep the center of the hood on the line. Maybe that will help. Looking forward to more field work!

      That is so true Mr Chris and thank you for it!! I am always trial by fire, this one burnt but there is somw reason why I had leftover seed😉😁 That seems to be the huge debate in my mind now. I went with where it was set before, that out it just a tire width off from my front tire. So it was close, but had to keep it about 8 inches off. I am so up in the air about whether to adjust it exactly at the wheel or go with the middle. Sure was easier to see at the wheel last time 😉 Thank you my friend for all your support and always being here, I really appreciate that!! Got a little dirt turning coming Wednesday😉😉😁😁🌽🌽🇺🇸🇺🇸👍👍

    As far as being off on the row it helps to always go at an angle on your last pass. That way you don't pick up on another parallel line. You still might be alright on the population. On old planters just keep changing plates till you get the seed per foot you are needing.We used to run 71 Deere planters to plant cantalopes and water mellons and actually cut our own plates out of blanks to get the right spacing. Don't worry about your mistakes cause that is how you learn. Just don't forget them and change up for the next year. Been trying to get peanut and cotton land ready here in Ga. Managed to get 30 acres of cotton planted yesterday before being rained out. When I finished there was water standing in the middles! Phytogen cotton seed this year was 700 dollars and change a bag. I planted 5 bags yesterday. Had about about a pound or two left over. Took delivery of 1600 pounds of peanut seed too. Now if the rain will let up...

      I need to let my OCD, square fields, and odd lines go out the window and plant what works best 😁 Thank you sir for the info, I hope according to the chart she is right now, or pretty close to what I am shooting for . I will get my markers set well and do the best I can this next time!! Thank you for the support on the mistakes, I have learned a lot since that day and attention to detail is the top priority...leave no stone unturned 😁
      This rain is just unreal lately, I'm glad you got some ground planted at least!! Those down pours can really mess up daily plans!! Oh my goodness, that seed is unreal!!! 😳😳😳 I have always been intrigued with peanuts and cotton, I need to do more research on them to learn more. Always talk to the wife about that stuff on our way to the coast. Thank you Mr Johnny for all your great help and advice!! Also for always being here, I really appreciate that!! Evening Nelson
    Funny thing about population, it all depends on the soil you have. We don't grow corn, but with everything else, we plant a lot more pounds per acre than a lot of the country. Because the soil and moisture we get, will make more grow. I just saw a video this morning, guy talking about 75# of oats per acre. For us that's way short! We shoot for 125#.
    You'll figure it out and do a good job 👍😎

      Good evening Ed, yes sir that what I have been reading. I was gonna shoot for about 4-6k less than most around here due to virgin ground, and inputs. I know that I would love to get some equipment together, but have a bunch of tree's to cut down for firewood or logs first. Learning experiences happen...we've all done it. The most embarrassing mistakes are usually the ones that we remember the best. I've seen a couple good videos on here about calibrating planters, Oliver66FarmBoy did one with his Oliver 540 planter, the process should be pretty much the same for your 543 if you need it. Basically, put seed in the planter go out in the driveway, set the planter down and drive forward. For 38 inch rows, measure out 13 feet 9 inches of what you drove forward, and pick up the seeds in that distance and count them. Multiply the number of seeds by 1000 and that is your population per acre. Trial and error to get as close as you can.
    I did some checking to try to figure out why I had so much seed left when I got done drilling. The biggest reason is that there is less ground there than I thought. I still missed a little bit, but not as bad as I originally thought. I'll do a video on that sometime soonish...
    I hope the weather cooperates so you can get some more planted. How late can you plant corn in NC? I think around here, the second week of June is about it, any later and it won't have time to dry down before winter. I talked to a friend who farms for real this morning, he said he has one day of soybeans left, and he is really excited to be finished planting before Memorial Day.
    Thanks for another great video, Nelson! I hope you have a good one, my friend!

    • @Pennies_on_the_dollar
      @Pennies_on_the_dollar  4 місяці тому +2

      That they do Evan, and yes sir it will be one I will never forget. I seem to remember him doing a video on that, I need to go back and watch it!! Thank you very much for that valuable info and I think I will do just that this week to double check the sprockets according to the charts.
      That is one thing I splurged on was an accurate GPS way back so I would know what I was up against with inputs. Not that it did me any good really 🤣🤣🤣 Except realizing I had more seed than I should have had left with my goal population. The ole 543 did pretty well, hard to tell if I had many skips, with all the crow action and that closing wheel dragging 😥 But I can't complain it's growing, although the deer are mowing it as quickly as it grows...we have a corn crop!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻
      I think I have heard June 15th around here, I said when I decided to plant more I needed to shoot for June 1st. If things hold steady, I hope to put the rest in this week. Got the ground worked before all the rains, and thankfully it drains pretty well. We have three days in the upper 80's so gonna shoot hard!! ( I'm spoiling future videos ) 🤣🤣🤣
      From what I have heard this year has been a wild one, alot for the weather guessers to be more wrong than ever!! I am blessed and so proud to see green corn growing!! If the deer and crows will leave it alone I hope to have a crop to harvest this fall!!
      I can't say thank you enough for all your support my friend , and always being here, I really appreciate that!! 😁😁🌽🌽🇺🇸👍👍 I hope you have a great week and thank you for the cultipacker video 😁😁

      @@Pennies_on_the_dollar Darn deer. I used the NRCS soil survey web site, so there is still probably some error because you're mapping the field from a satellite photo, but it's at least somewhat close. It showed I have 6.6 acres there, I was figuring from 7.5. It's all shaped weird so it's hard to get a good idea. I should have been a weather guesser, but I'd have to be on the radio because I don't have a face for TV lol!

      @@evanaustin2636 I still would love to get one of those onsite mapping systems for the tractor as well, but not in the budget! I think I was close , for the most part....but get this, I still budgeted for 2 more acres than I actually had when setting money aside. I tell ya Evan my mind is a scary place some days!! The deer are crazy bad had no idea until the corn popped out 😳😳 Isn't that the truth, the only job to get wrong daily and still call it a career. I do believe there is a higher power at work, and you know the reason for the odd weather 😉 Thank you again Evan!! I really enjoy the conversation!!!!

      That's what I have heard, all this is so new to me it's such a learning curve!! I had no idea the deer damage was going to be so bad, I have no idea how much I will even have left after they have there way with it 🤬🤬 I decided to chisel plow, those chunks of sod were going to be hard enough, especially since my little offset disk is broken at the moment. Fingers crossed it happens this week for the last of planting 🤞 Thank you Russ for all your advice and support!! Also for always being here, I really appreciate that!! 😁😁👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🌽🌽🌽

    I wouldn't be too concerned about it especially when you have more ground to plant. Live and learn right? Like you say, won't make those mistakes again. You remember those. Crooked rows? I was always told that there is just more corn in them. Ha ha. At least the corn is up and growing and not still in the bag or under water. You will be fine.

I think I am more mad at letting something so simple to change, fall between the cracks. But with the deer population eating it as fast as it grows, then it might have been a blessing to be able to plant more!! I am going to see how I do this time, if they are crooked...then I will have to have more seat time 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I honestly think the population thing was a blessing, because I hadn't intentionally planned to plant over there this season. I forgot I spread lime there last fall,and the hay paid for fertilizer 😉 I did get it changed, according to the book and chart, it should be right for sure now!! I hope to plant the other Wednesday of this week. Right after the tillage (future video) the skies opened up. We have been dry since Saturday, so hopefully it will be good to go then!! @evanaustin2636 😆 we've allways gotta find the bright side of the situation other wise life can be pretty dismal at times lol. But I've had a couple "test plots" in my farming adventures too 😆

    • @TimothyFluegel
      @TimothyFluegel 4 місяці тому +1

      @Pennies_on_the_dollar 😆 I've had a couple test plots in my day too my friend. It's when the population is too high when you've really got to worry. With the lighter population you should end up with huge ears and still a decent yield. And if I'm being dead honest you never know what's going to work best in your ground. My mistakes are what gave me the population I use today. I was going for 32000 and I planted 36000 on a 12 acre patch one year. I ended up cultivating more vigorously to get down to the 32000 range and I ended up with less weeds and right around 32000 population and my highest yiels to that point. I think you nailed it on the head when you said everything happens for a reason. Time will tell us why you planted it at that population I'm sure of it. Every thing is going on my end..... it's been one break after another this year. My welder has paid for itself again this spring for sure. I'm starting to feel like I owe it money acually 😆. I got all my organic planted just yesterday, I'm waiting on more manure for the 50 acres of transitional ground. And I picked up another 10 acres that was crp for 30 years. Trying to clear that out and make it farmable. And while it rains we're over hauling the big 7060 as it fried a pitson while I was plowing 🤦‍♂️ and I've got a custom job set up for the weed zapper asap, 160 acres at $75 an acre and my tractor is apart in the garage 🤦‍♂️ so just one stress after another my friend. Just a normal planting season really 😆 🤣 😂

    I appreciate that you show everything, even the screwups!! However, that might not be as big of an error as it might seem. I don't know what your planted population ended up being but I have read and been told that the conventional corn varieties are really just recycled genetics from the 90's and 2000's. I think in those days people planted lower populations than what the modern genetics are bred for so you might still have a decent crop. I would absolutely plant the rest of the corn you got.. Also speaking of tubes... one out of three tubes I mess with these days goes bad.. I know I haven't forgot how to mount tires so I really don't think the quality is there anymore even if you get the "good" tubes. I try to go tubeless every chance I get now..Take care...
