Tim, watching the drôle footage it looked like if you had followed Bob you might have done the project faster. His more powerful tractor doing the busting and yours doing the finishing. You would just need to make sure you were busting any ridges he left.
Like some others folks, I subbed during the 1025r days because it was informative to me before my purchase (I ended up with a 2025r and am very satisfied for my needs). Still, I feel like your larger equipment has outgrown me and less often relatable. I don’t know how to keep your channel current and pertinent without growth, but I’d like to see more small equipment projects as well. No plan to upgrade, so I’d like to see more of what our little machines can do. Thanks for the education so far! I hope you’re able to get back to more Johnny sized projects. As always, the sound and video quality are VERY good!
I finally ordered a 4’ tiller just now using your code Tim. 2 1/2 years ago I bought a 1025r and started a business, and at the time I wanted a tiller in the mix and 4’ options weren’t available. Ended up going with a 60” gear driven Titan tiller and figured I’d replace it down the road. That thing is still going strong and it’s made 3x what I paid for it so far. It had no issues as I wore the tines down. I finally replaced them a couple months ago with good tines and now it is really tough to keep RPMs up in a lot of soils and conditions. I plan to add a cab tractor later 33-40ish HP, so it’s time to right size for the 1025r and put that Titan on pause.

I have seeded a ton of yards over the years and what I have found to work best is a few passes with the tiller, followed by a chain harrow to flatten it out and remove any small imperfections. Then broadcast seed, drag it again with the harrow then go o er with one more pass of seed. Lastly cover with straw or ECB blanket. It always provides a great stand.
i have a 48" xp tiller - it was on sale and about all i could afford - i really like it i have used skid steer solutions for a few years - always been a good company but i like the heavy hitch tooth bar better when i can save up for it
Doing something similar but am not tilling anything up. Now you’ve opened up the seed bed to more weeds. You will want to spray again in the spring before seeding. We’re removing an alfalfa stand and did a fall spray and will do a spring spray before no till drilling in the prairie grasses and Forbs.
I bought a 4’ tiller for my 1025R this spring. LOVE IT ❤! Should’ve bought it when I bought the tractor. I doubled the size of one of my gardens. I had the expansion plus the two gardens all tilled up in less time than just the expansion alone with my Craftsman walk behind rear tine tiller.
I did numerous jobs this past year with my 1025R tilling for customers. I have the Frontier 49 inch reverse tiller. I have seen your comparison videos. I definitely believe that I get better results with the reverse. My customers were extremely happy with my work. I got it from AHW in Rockville. I worked horse pastures that had never been tilled in Hendricks County that only required one pass. I have always wondered about the 5 foot you definitely answered my questions. Thanks for the video.
You sure like stress testing the equipment. Tree gone almost as fast as the fancy brush mulchers :).. Be interesting to try that 5ft tiller on the Johnny 1025r Extreme.

Several years ago I bought an old Kubota B7100D for $2500, the motor was bad but it came with a trailer load of equipment. A brush hog, box blade, angle blade, three point mount disc harrow, and a 42 inch tiller. I never fixed the Kubota and last year bought a JD 1023E. It has no trouble in my north Florida sand. It is warm everywhere and on top off that I still get attacked by swarms of mosquitos when I go out side.
I agree with you Tim. There are 5’ implements that work just fine on a 1025R but that is a lot of tiller on a 25R. But it looks like a well built tiller. I wish I had a use for one. Happy Thanksgiving guys!
Great job tilling, Tim and great shots, Christy. My B2601 handles my 60” forward rotation tiller really well, but I wouldn’t want to try anything larger.
Tim, I have a 5125R but still prefer using the 1025R with a 4ft tiller for EVERYTHING tilling. Garden? Yup. 1025R. Tilling and seeding where I’ve cleared my property? Yup. 1025R. For what ever reason it seems to do a better job (I’d use Ventrac if I had one but don’t and can’t see or justify the money. The 5125R handles all brushhogging chores easily and faster than it could hope to anyway) that 5’ seems it’s just a tad bit more than j1 can handle. Your 3046R would handle that 5ftr like a champeen though. Good vid! Still enjoy all my time on the 1025R and for me it’s a much more useful tool for handling day to day chores than the 5R and it’s used 80% of the time. It’s just so easy to move around and the small loader work, which again is the bulk of it, the 1R is quest quicker to shuffle about if not in a larger space. That and the wife can use j1 much easier, it’s just an awesome, easy to use and powerful machine for its size.
You mentioned running wide open for 540 the pto. Not sure if it’s true for all manufacturers, but did some research a few years ago on my 135 massey diesel. It seems that the 540 mark in the tach is rated at slightly above peak torque/hp of the engine. So as you said as it pulled down, it came into peak torque
My tractor is JD 2305 and I use a 5’ tiller and do not have the bogging down you are having. Maybe soil differences in Alabama. Not sure. I am sure that I enjoyed seeing you on little Johnny again though
I started with a 1025r. I loved the tractor, but wanted a bit more capability. Interestingly, I wasn’t sure how much I needed a tractor and that factor made me try the 1 series first rather than go to a 2 series initially. I ran a 5 foot tiller on the 1025r before I upgraded to the 2038r. The 1 series will operate the 5 foot tiller, but it’s not ideally suited to that larger tiller. Having run the same tiller on the new 2038r for a year, the performance is night and day different. That large tiller would over match the 1025r in every way compared to the 2038r. Thanks for showing this setup in operation!

I have a 56” Phoenix T-5 roto-tiller (Sicma mfg) that just covers the wheel ruts. Seven flanges with six tines each. Ideal for my 1025R. I have to take it slow, but I am retired so that’s fine.
I wish I lived near you. I would have brought my 2038 and Bush Hog 5 foot tiller to compare. It’s a hoss at 700 pounds. 6 tines gear drive reverse rotation. One pass and it leaves nothing on top. BTW you know the ridge tillers leave between rows? I took the skid shoes off the tiller and it greatly reduces that ridge. Honestly they are worthless especially with 3 point depth control like the 2038 has. Think about what they are supposed to do. They are supposed to ride on top of the dirt controlling the depth of cut. That works on the first pass. The second pass it only works on one side that hasn’t been tilled because the other side just pushes the dirt away and leaves a trench and hill. They don’t make sense so I took them off. Much happier now. Try it. Take care and have a good thanksgiving. Is Christie serving cheese burgers? 🤣

Tilling grass is the hardest thing you can till. I have always turned the grass under and have gotten a better result. Have you got a plow for the 1025r? And a small disk. I always thought a tiller was a finish tool and too fine for anything other than a garden. Blessings.
That is just amazing tilling that little tree into the ground!! For tilling and leaving over winter; the way you did it is the way I would of done it. The grass and even the tree would biodegrade Fluff it up tilling in the spring makes it easy to plant. However I would of considered using a flail mower set down low to see if I could make that material smaller, including the tree, so there would not be such a tangle of matter in the ground for planting right away after tilling. I could be completely crazy but that is the way it looked to me from the internet. Besides that means using the flail mower too!!! 🚜😀

I run a 9 foot Howard tiller 1000pto and it spins very slow. I was expecting something that spins fast like the smaller tillers but it still does a good job. Actually did a better job running almost at idle compared to full speed
bought a 3260-frontier rear tine tiller and thought could put on my 1025r JD what I found out, without weights on the front end the tractor will flip backwards going Up Hill, will not flip far because of the tiller but will flip, does a great job will cut a row 8-10 inches deep or deeper at 3500 Rpm. barely connects but connected level with @ 10 degrees forward, with the tail gate lifted @ 6 inches with two passes pushes a little on huge rocks or pulverizes the rocks, leaves a huge burrow at the end of the run. filled the front-end loader with lead then added @ 200 lbs. of iron on the front, now go where I like on the highway, cannot complain, rides those NW Arkansas Mountains with ease
I love your spirit to try using the 1025r, but honestly, every mfg I know of recommends at least 25hp for a five ft. tiller. What they most often don't reveal is that it means at the PTO. I run a 5ft. I bought at Tractor Supply Co. when i worked there(I got 15% employee discount). During our training sessions the manufacturers rep made sure to note that requirement. They used to carry King Kutter(I believe made in Alabama) but now sell their branded model, Country Line, made by Tarter Gate in the US. Just about the exact same specs as the Tractor Basics. I looked up the specs from Tarter Gate and I found the speed @540RPM is 211rpm. Their 5ft tiller also weighs a good deal more at 638lbs.

Great Video! I'm doing the very same thing - getting ready to plant prairie grass. What speed are you able to maintain on the 2038R with the 5' tiller? How long did it take you do till one acre?
You can make a 5' tiller a 4' after the first pass. A 4' won't stretch out to 5' though. I think it really comes down to the conditions you till in. Are you breaking fresh ground or just cultivating stuff that's already been a field? Is it dry powder or chunky and wet? I use a 4' myself, simply because that's what I could get. I borrowed a 5' a few years after the ground was initially broken, and didn't notice any extra difficulty. For context, almost all of what I'm doing with a tiller is keeping a dirt riding arena in a nice soft state
I think everyone loves the 1025r so much because its all most people can afford. A 30 thousand dollar tractor is just to much for a average income of 60 thousand then after the government gets there cut of 20 thousand and just bills to live a tractor is unobtainable. None the less love your video's seeing all the cool stuff you do with you tractors that perhaps one day I will do with mine.

I agree a larger tractor will operate a 5' tiller better but my 1026R does a very good job, even on virgin ground. As I get older I'd go with a 4' but that's only because I'm getting older and weaker. Actually, I would go with a QH if I was to do differently. I've thought about getting a 4' tiller just so I could get the iMatch too. My tiller isn't made for QH. But as for the 5' tiller, I don't see the problem and I leave nothing but dirt on top when I'm done.
Where’s Johnny X? Would the extra HP from the turbocharger make a difference? I don’t think we talk about it much but how much does the turbocharger increase torque?
Great Video as always Tim. A fun comparison would be to switch over to Johny X go at it with the turbo vs the non Turbo. PTO work is where I always have felt is where having a Turbo really shines. I am imagining the 2038R is probably similar to Johny X. Bigger engine and a Turbo probably a little bit of an advantage over Johny X. Everyone knows green tractors always run better then orange ones. LOL Tim, do you still have that Kubota? It has been quite a while since I had seen it on the channel.
For years i have been running a caroni 1350 on my Kubota B1750 takes everything it has to drive and lift but she keeps on plugging along i have the tractor 25 years its wore out in every way but it just stays going. Bought a LS R50 with loader recently and now im spoilt for all sorts of power.

Thats what my dad told me to do with my kubota b2650 he said id buy 5 foot implements ,rotary cutter, tiller you don’t have to use all 5 feet all the time and if i went 4 foot i don’t even cover my tire tracks.i see king cutter makes a 54 inch tiller i may opt for that one.

Hello I have a question on the three point lift on the tractor, the part that is part of the tractor that the side links connect to (sorry not sure what they are called, i will call them the three point lift points). Should the right and left three point lift points be level from the factory? i just got a new 1025R and the right side looks lower then the left side. this can probably be compensated by adjusting the right side link, but should this be the case, or should the tractor lift points be level from the factory? Really enjoy your channel, and thought you would be a good person to ask. would appreciate any comments you have. thank you,
As you deduced, the right side link is adjustable. You can adjust that as you wish. Most of the time, you will want it level. ...but sometimes, you might want it tilted (maybe for digging a ditch, etc). Make sure you tighten the 'jam nut' against the turn buckle after you get it to level. ...otherwise it will vibrate downward over time. Does that help?
I’m assuming you mean moldboard plow. There is, but I’m having trouble getting it adjusted appropriately, so I haven’t showed it. Overall, I recommend a rototiller instead of a plow. Much easier to deal with the results. Plowed ground is painful to work.
i have a 50 in reverse tine tiller and like it much better than what you have there it will suck its self in to the ground and not push me around like what you have there not putting yours down in any way just saying what i have and like mine is land pride also

I run a 5’ king cutter tiller with my 2305. My soil is more sandy, and even tilling sod the first time doesn’t bog the tractor like you were seeing.

I’ve used a 5’ Kuhn tiller on my 3320 for some time now. Works great! I may have to try it out on my 1025R now.

My neighbor has a bx23s he had borrowed my 5-foot tiller before purchasing his own. He decided that the 4ft was a better fit for him.
I run a 9 foot Howard tiller 1000pto and it spins very slow. I was expecting something that spins fast like the smaller tillers but it still does a good job. Actually did a better job running almost at idle compared to full speed
bought a 3260-frontier rear tine tiller and thought could put on my 1025r JD what I found out, without weights on the front end the tractor will flip backwards going Up Hill, will not flip far because of the tiller but will flip, does a great job will cut a row 8-10 inches deep or deeper at 3500 Rpm. barely connects but connected level with @ 10 degrees forward, with the tail gate lifted @ 6 inches with two passes pushes a little on huge rocks or pulverizes the rocks, leaves a huge burrow at the end of the run. filled the front-end loader with lead then added @ 200 lbs. of iron on the front, now go where I like on the highway, cannot complain, rides those NW Arkansas Mountains with ease
I love your spirit to try using the 1025r, but honestly, every mfg I know of recommends at least 25hp for a five ft. tiller. What they most often don't reveal is that it means at the PTO. I run a 5ft. I bought at Tractor Supply Co. when i worked there(I got 15% employee discount). During our training sessions the manufacturers rep made sure to note that requirement. They used to carry King Kutter(I believe made in Alabama) but now sell their branded model, Country Line, made by Tarter Gate in the US. Just about the exact same specs as the Tractor Basics. I looked up the specs from Tarter Gate and I found the speed @540RPM is 211rpm. Their 5ft tiller also weighs a good deal more at 638lbs.
Not everything requires 25 hp , most mfg have them start at 13hp depending one the size.

It is way late to seed grasses. I would advise tilling and seeding in the spring. I don’t know tractors but I do know grass.
Great Video! I'm doing the very same thing - getting ready to plant prairie grass. What speed are you able to maintain on the 2038R with the 5' tiller? How long did it take you do till one acre?

You can make a 5' tiller a 4' after the first pass. A 4' won't stretch out to 5' though.
I think it really comes down to the conditions you till in. Are you breaking fresh ground or just cultivating stuff that's already been a field? Is it dry powder or chunky and wet?
I use a 4' myself, simply because that's what I could get. I borrowed a 5' a few years after the ground was initially broken, and didn't notice any extra difficulty.
For context, almost all of what I'm doing with a tiller is keeping a dirt riding arena in a nice soft state
I think everyone loves the 1025r so much because its all most people can afford. A 30 thousand dollar tractor is just to much for a average income of 60 thousand then after the government gets there cut of 20 thousand and just bills to live a tractor is unobtainable. None the less love your video's seeing all the cool stuff you do with you tractors that perhaps one day I will do with mine.

No. Electric tractor has limited PTO power. 13hp I think.

I agree a larger tractor will operate a 5' tiller better but my 1026R does a very good job, even on virgin ground. As I get older I'd go with a 4' but that's only because I'm getting older and weaker. Actually, I would go with a QH if I was to do differently. I've thought about getting a 4' tiller just so I could get the iMatch too. My tiller isn't made for QH. But as for the 5' tiller, I don't see the problem and I leave nothing but dirt on top when I'm done.

Where’s Johnny X? Would the extra HP from the turbocharger make a difference? I don’t think we talk about it much but how much does the turbocharger increase torque?
Yes, woulda made a nice difference…but i wanted to show stock 1025r so that folks could make proper decisions.

A fun comparison would be to switch over to Johny X go at it with the turbo vs the non Turbo.
PTO work is where I always have felt is where having a Turbo really shines. I am imagining the 2038R is probably similar to Johny X.
Bigger engine and a Turbo probably a little bit of an advantage over Johny X.

For years i have been running a caroni 1350 on my Kubota B1750 takes everything it has to drive and lift but she keeps on plugging along i have the tractor 25 years its wore out in every way but it just stays going. Bought a LS R50 with loader recently and now im spoilt for all sorts of power.
Is a 1025r smaller than thev2305 I’m borrowing? I need to make a swale and I’m trying to learn off your videos. I’ve got an old 850 but it’s down right now.
1025r is slightly larger and slightly more HP than a 2305.
I run a 5 foot tiller on my 855 jd and it runs fine. Only 1 more horses

I ran a 5ft on a kubota 2360. It handled it better that ur 1025 is. Not sure why. Try half on tilled and half on non tilled
Thats what my dad told me to do with my kubota b2650 he said id buy 5 foot implements ,rotary cutter, tiller you don’t have to use all 5 feet all the time and if i went 4 foot i don’t even cover my tire tracks.i see king cutter makes a 54 inch tiller i may opt for that one.

Hello I have a question on the three point lift on the tractor, the part that is part of the tractor that the side links connect to (sorry not sure what they are called, i will call them the three point lift points). Should the right and left three point lift points be level from the factory? i just got a new 1025R and the right side looks lower then the left side. this can probably be compensated by adjusting the right side link, but should this be the case, or should the tractor lift points be level from the factory? Really enjoy your channel, and thought you would be a good person to ask. would appreciate any comments you have. thank you,
As you deduced, the right side link is adjustable. You can adjust that as you wish. Most of the time, you will want it level. ...but sometimes, you might want it tilted (maybe for digging a ditch, etc).
Make sure you tighten the 'jam nut' against the turn buckle after you get it to level. ...otherwise it will vibrate downward over time. Does that help?

I’m assuming you mean moldboard plow. There is, but I’m having trouble getting it adjusted appropriately, so I haven’t showed it.
Overall, I recommend a rototiller instead of a plow. Much easier to deal with the results. Plowed ground is painful to work.

I'd say the value of a 5' tiller is while its all the 1025r wants, the owner doesn't have buy another tiller when upgrading to 3 series
Used 5' stuff is easier to find and often cheaper than used 4' stuff on marketplace too.

i have a 50 in reverse tine tiller and like it much better than what you have there it will suck its self in to the ground and not push me around like what you have there not putting yours down in any way just saying what i have and like mine is land pride also
Yep. You’ve watched us for a long time. You know that I prefer forward rotation…and why. This is why both types are offered! Thankfully, we don’t have to all agree on everything, right?
I run a gear drive 5' TSC tiller on my mahindra 2816. Its a lot to handle in Carolina clay even after plow and discing. Its way too much for a 1025r
