UPDATE: Vincent Prom (log64) has confirmed that he plans on putting Pilfer: Story of Light on Switch! No ETA for it currently though. Also, Frogun Encore is now available on PC and consoles!
I've just discovered your channel due to your direct reaction and the niches that your videos go into make my autistic obsession in these topics go squeee!! A game a lot of people haven't heard of and is actually really unique is Big Bang Mini, its an arcade top down shooter unlike any I've seen before because each world had its own unique theming, and not just the generic ice, desert ect, but instead was about going around the Earth and showing the culture and every world even changes major mechanics and has a drastically different art style.
Great collection as always Benja! I was already considering Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom, but now I KNOW I'm gonna have a good tine with it. Buying that on Steam soon!
It's only a matter of time before Ben makes an Indie Kart Racer video with stuff like Nightmare Kart and... stuff I most likely don't know about because I'm too into the Indie scene like the rest of y'all. And yeah you can tell I don't have much else to say... other than the fact I'm still waiting for someone to make an Ape Escape successor, granted that series doesn't get much love anyway so that might just be a pipe dream.
It's not a direct successor, but The Big Catch does have some Ape Escape inspiration, with the main collectibles being fish you have to chase down and catch.
Great video man, Paperklay at 19:17 has some amazing potential, ive been following the devlogs regularly and the dev is also such a great guy. Definitely support these indie gems!!!
I had to leave early from the livestream due to work, but now I wanna tried Pilfer and Paperklay in the future ( also I’m embarrassed that i confused bawk with cluck in the chat)
I know this is about indies but how did you NOT mention Mario, Sonic, crash bandicoot, spyro, sackboy a big adventure or donkeykong 64 those are all amazing!!! This video is a shame, Dislike...
I agree, Sonic 06 is my personal favorite indie 3D platformer, the fact that Benjamage clearly intentionally ignored it is what ended our friendship, smh.
As someone who's both a fan of indie 3D platformers as well as an aspiring indie game designer, I love videos like these. They're both so inspiring and fill me with so much determination to make my own indie 3D platformers.
No way! I backed both Frogun AND Rolling Rascal! Thanks for giving the love they deserved! Edit: also thanks for turning me on to Warrior Spirit; can’t wait to play it and let alone, BACK it!
Maybe it’s just me but this video was a better viewpoint on showing the positive state of 3D platformers than nitro rad’s video! Yours showed that indie platformers should be seen with the same amount of love, respect, and enthusiasm as the triple A platformers, instead of abandoning one for the other like what nitro rad kind of implied (at least in my eyes) My only problem with indie 3D platforms is more so a personal reason, I mostly play games on my PS5 and it’s hard to play a lot of these games since a good amount of them never had a port to consoles and if they do is only exclusive to a specific platform, so I wish for the future we can see more platformers be released to more consoles! Sorry if I go on for too long I hope you get what I mean!
Yeah, that was kinda something I didn't like about that vid, like what if someone really likes the world and characters, what do they do then? just abandon this world they really like just because? it's been kind of a thing I've not been liking about more and more of his new video's, first Pseudoregalia's Metriodvania debate trying to sound like he's right and then that.
@BenjaMage - Saddened by the fact that you single- -handedly overlooked the one game called "Nikoderiko: The Magical World" in this showcase of platformers, since the music behind "Nikoderiko" is David Wise (yes, the same Wise famously known for "Donkey Kong Country").
I'm really sad you didn't cover Misc. A Tiny Tale. There's a demo available and is basically if Chibi-Robo was a 3D platformer. Super cool and cute stuff!
To be fair, he knows about nearly 100 3D platformers. It'll be rough to cover them all. Like, I'd love it if more people covered Distance, but it's been out for years and got sorely slept on. (It's a racing game, but it's also definitely a 3D platformer based on how it plays)
Foekoe got me introduced to Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom bought it months ago and playing it so much to do 100% and having so much freaking fun!!!!!!!!!!!! It's like if Pizza Tower was an 3D Platformer instead of a 2D Platformer!!!!!
I think it’s amazing that the people behind Rollin’ Rascal are the same who made the Smashified renders from almost a decade ago. Glad to see the team apply what they learned to their own game IP.
Ah that'd explain it! The renders and animation was so fluid I figured they had to have experience in the field from somewhere, that's awesome that they've gone onto making a game! :D
_Super Kiwi 64_ Oh yeah, that was a decent little distraction. Kind of empty though... _...got a free update_ Wait. Time trials? New levels? A boss? I had no idea this was happening! Time to get that update downloaded!
Similarly, shoot ‘em ups saw a renaissance/revival in the mid/late 2010’s/early 2020’s, mostly from Doujin/indie devs. Not to say they were dead completely prior to that. During that time, we got games like Drainus, Sol Cresta, Devil Blade Reboot, Cotton Reboot, Gunvein, Crimzon Clover (which kicks total butt btw), Rolling Gunner and so on which I do recommend. I prefer vertical to horizontal (not that I hate horizontal STGs, in fact I like them just as much, Cotton being my fav of all time) because you don’t have to worry about crashing into obstacles (Cotton doesn’t do that and Drainus gives you that option which is good because I hate losing a life to a stupid wall rather than a bullet) but that’s just me. Oh and the option to rotate your screen in some. I know that’s a niche feature but I’m all here for it as I find it enhances the experience imo. The number one reason to buy a monitor that can rotate vertically if you ask me. I brought that up because it had a similar story but STGs aren’t being made by the major studios these days (Sol Cresta being the rare exception) but smaller teams/indie devs. Nice to see the 3D platforming torch being picked up by smaller teams. I remember those games being all the rage during the PS2 days. I do want to play Astro Bot when it comes out.
23:53 I have to agree the floating arm looks out of place, I feel maybe it'd be better if it was connected to the hat the warrior wears? I don't tend to follow the indie scene too much so I appreciate videos like these, definitely a couple of games here that I'll keep a lookout for! :D
I don't like when games look and feel like a copy of another game, Pilfer it's borderline a knockoff, even if its done greatly and changes the level design, it's still way to copied from Galaxy. Like Nikoderiko is a knockoff of Donkey Kong and Crash. And please don't try to justify this as "its an homage to those games", cause it's just an excuse to copy game elements. Rascal instead reinvented the speedster formula, its from the same creator of Sonic GT (a fan game), but GT plays completly different from official Sonic, that is how you make a tribute without coping.
Funny you show that Gex reveal from Limited run, Because they just had their direct where they rehashed that same trailer for their new revival and... and... That bloody cat... That damn *creature* is back...
This is the first video of yours that I've come across, and I just wanted to say that it's such a good video! Very well presented, and there were a bunch of games that I hadn't heard of yet, most of which have now been added to my ever more bloated Steam wishlist...! 😅
I was really hoping you would cover Kukoos: Lost Pets because it’s actually a really fun indie 3D co-op platformer made by PetitFabrik. The game weirdly enough plays a lot like Sackboy ABA, Donkey Kong, and Fall Guys all at the same time and it’s great.
I’m shocked you didn’t mention how Tod and Lily looks like Luigi and Daisy, or that one of the levels in the Yellow Taxi game looks like Green Hill Zone.
Great video! A little shameless plug; I am also working on a 3D Platformer called Gillbert: Guardian of the Grotto 😊 Hoping to have an early demo out for the next Next Fest. 🐠

Most games I've been playing have been Indie games and a few of them have been 3D platformers. Last year was when I dip my toe into the poor. 2 games I got were Smushi Come Home and Submerged. Smushi is a light-hearted cozy platformer about a cute mushroom char just trying to get home. The play style reminded me of Mario 64. Submerged is my fav of the 2 though because of the story. It's set in a post-apocalyptic world and you play as a sister trying to take care of her wounded and sick brother. The story is very heavy, but here's the interesting part, there's hardly any dialogue and you learn the story of both the siblings and the world by explore this ruined city's sky scrapers. So yeah very heavy on the visual storytelling, which I enjoy. There is a sequel to this game that takes place after the events of this game and it involves the siblings again, but I haven't played it yet. Both of these games I played on the Switch. I've also recently played a demo of another game, it's called Europa where you play as boy, who's an android, who explores the world of Europa (based on an actual location in space, it's one of Jupiter's moons). From the demo, the gameplay does remind me of Super Mario Galaxy. So I'll be playing the game when it comes out (which is supposively this year).
