      Thank you for telling your story and using your power to try and make a positive impact in the world! I feel very personal attachment to your experience because I have struggled with feeling like I'm not part of the "vegan club" for having slip ups now and then because I was afraid of not only being ostrichized by my fellow vegans, but also because I was afraid it would give non-vegans the wrong impression about what being vegan means. It took me a long time, but I have come to terms with the fact that we all live in a non-vegan world right now, so slip ups are unavoidable and should not be treated like the end of the world. I appreciate that you were able to share that particular message about what being vegan is actually like and give people a realistic representation of what it's like to live in alignment with your values when the world is not built for that. You are an actual goddess and I can't wait to see what else you have in store!

      every bit helps, but it depends why you are doing it. If you are doing it for health, then sure, one bit of meat a week is safe, for environmentalism, it makes less sense, because it's an emergency, we not only need to stop climate change, but reverse the current effects, and that will be hard to do if we eat even one bit of meat per week, and that's where plant-based burgers come in lol. If it's for ethical reasons, once you decide that animal abuse and exploitation is bad, then the question becomes, how many times per week can you hurt animals before it becomes wrong?

      to be fair, it IS a diet. A "diet" just is a specific way of eating. It's not always weight-loss related. Example: Celiac people are on a gluten-free diet. You're just on a permanent vegan diet. I guess people prefer to refer to it as a certain kind of life style, but technically,its not wrong :)

      Being vegan means you are against the exploitation, use, and abuse of animals. Knowingly and intentionally eating animal products means that you are NOT vegan. Don't get me wrong it's a great big step that someone cuts out 95% of animal products but if you are still eating animal flesh and their secretions you simply aren't vegan.

      @alyssamatias3791 4 роки тому +121

      Veganism is a way of living, basically avoiding animal use and products as much as possible since it’s a movement that primarily focuses on animal rights. That would include clothing, entertainment, toiletries, etc. This is probably why she mentioned if she was either on a plant-based diet or vegan. A lot of vegans would argue that if you eat vegan meals but use animal products in your daily life (leather etc.) thats just plant-based diet.
      But I think it’s important to know that it’s not about perfection but about intention.

All the meat substitutes are either packed with gluten (seitan) or soy-based, which is bad for my gluten sensitivity and histamine intolerance....even plant-based proteins such as legumes will cause problems with my histamine. And last but not least, the variety of vegetables available here are not big enough for my taste. I'm from Germany, but I did spend 2 years in Toronto, Canada where you'd get such a vast and huge variety of veggies from the chinese stores, that you could easily go without meat without missing anything. It is good that we have livestock to take in the overstock of crops and it also provides easier access to a balanced diet, then fertilizer, and allows farmers to sell higher priced goods. The main problem with all vegan diets is that regions can only support certain crops. It is best both for the land and for us to sustain it with the most diversity possible. Our diets and farming should honestly include things like algaes, insects, amphibians, reptiles on a regular too, but along the lines of disgust and abnormality they are phased out. Without these methods of control we lose stability, becoming susceptible to plagues and famines. It is just lucky that the world is such a large and kind place where when one region goes short, the people can move and give the land a break or receive help.

In order to foster a positive environment for conversation with people who do not eat the way that I do, I use the term plant based. People have been very kind, understanding, and had lots of interesting questions. Sometimes the questions can be a little short sighted or misguided, but that's from misinformation and then I have an opportunity to re-educate. I have chosen to be plant based for the animals, for the environment, and for my health. Those things make me vegan, but they also make me plant based. :)

But I do agree on the fact that since veganism (is that a word? ) has taken such a big proportion and that there's this "war" going on about both parties, that most meat eaters just naturally (out of pure ego motives) refuse to try "veg" foods. So, I would say that vegans restrict themselves (duh) and also a lot of meat eaters do too *but not all* (don't put all of us in the same boat please. )

    She seems like she has a very healthy and rational attitude and approach to this, which is refreshing to see considering how many "extremes" we see in today's culture. I honestly would love to try vegetarianism or veganism, but due to several digestive issues, there is so little of it (the diet) that my body tolerates without getting a bad reaction - or worse, getting sick. But I still wanna try to get as close to it as I can get without compromising my own health. Both because of the environment/the climate, but also because it's getting harder and harder to eat animal products without feeling guilty about it. Like she said, you do your best with what you have, and that's really all anyone can ask for.

    • @negsoccertabarnak5414
      @negsoccertabarnak5414 4 роки тому +3

      I don't get what you're saying, though. Veganism just eliminates meat, dairy, eggs, and honey from the diet (and their derivatives), which means literally any other food you can think of is still able to be eaten on a vegan diet? What are you not able to tolerate from plants? Fiber? Why are you able to digest animal products without getting a "bad reaction" or "sick?" Do you eat nothing but animal products? Do you never eat any plants with animal products?
      p.s. It's a lifestyle, not a diet. *Anyone* can be vegan, even an Inuit eating nothing but seal all day, as long as they go as far as is *possible and practicable* and quite frankly all I hear in this comment is the desire to not to go as close to it as you can? If you were going as close as you can, you'd already be a vegan. But you said you "want to try," which is a completely different thing. If you "want to try" there is *literally nothing* stopping you from being vegan except you, dietary restrictions (whatever they may be) included.

    I’ve been a vegetarian for 15 years. My reasons were health based - my mom and her side of the family all had colon cancer. Mom’s colostomy surgeon said the best way to reduce my risk was to stop eating meat. Not gonna lie, it is a daily struggle. Giving up chicken was the hardest. But I decided that I could have one cheat meal every three months, and there are times when I decide not to cheat when the cheat day comes. I gave up on milk years ago, but cheese and eggs are still in my diet. Now that there are increasingly more vegan replacement options, I find my consumption of eggs and cheese is reducing. Now that more Californians are moving to my state, the stigma around plant based eating is drastically reduced. It was really a challenge to eat out with friends in the 2000s. Whatever your reason is for a dietary change, you shouldn’t be dragged for it. My colon is healthy and for now that’s confirmation I made the right decision for me. Love your recipes, Merle!!

    This is beautiful! Thank you! I agree with all of it! I'm a vegetarian for the benefit of making my life easier when I go out to eat or to someone's house, but my diet is 80%+ plant based because it's the best I can do- I fear restricting myself into an eating disorder.
    When I have my own kitchen someday, I do look forward to it being meat free.

    Such a beautiful, inspirational video, you're great, Merle! I've been vegetarian for almost a decade, but I just started thinking about going vegan a few months ago.
    It's not that easy because I still live with my parents, but I've been eating mostly vegan for the past two or three months and I'm slowly getting there.
    To the people who are convinced they'll never be able to go 100% vegan, I'd say every little help is a blessing: try to eat less meat, substitute dairy with plant based milk, experiment with new food, it's going to be an exciting journey, I promise!

    Do not steal from unsuspecting backyard hens. What's theirs is theirs and belongs to them solely. How hard is it to abstain from consuming hen droppings? Does Nature not bestow enough nutrient-dense plant foods that can be procured without any obvious pain and suffering? Veganism is not JUST a diet; veganism is a stance YOU TAKE against all forms of abuse imaginable, particularly one that is associated with the commodification and maltreatment of non-human animals.

    Thank you for speaking out. I feel exactly the same. For my family and friends I'm too vegan, too extreme, some of them are constantly trying to discourage me, even after 2 years being vegan. And for "the vegan community" I'm not vegan enough, cause I've made mistakes, I live in a country where veganism is no where near common, so I don't have access to mock meats and many vegan cheeses, and a lot of restaurants don't offer a single vegan option. I own a couple makeup products that are cruelty free, but not vegan, also I eat honey sometimes. That being said I'm not okay with doing less, I'm not happy for making mistakes, but I feel like I'm trying my best everyday, and it's ether too good or not good enough.

      @@FABIOof119, it's pretty obvious that not all vegans are quitting. Not at all. Vegan businesses are booming all over the world. Going vegan is an ethical choice. It can have massive positive effects on your health if you eat healthy. If not than it doesn't. You can check pages like "cronometer" (which are not at all designed for vegans) and type in all the stuff you eat during the day. It shows you in detail what you are getting and what you are missing. The human body doesn't need animal fats nether does it need oil. What it needs is fat so you need to consume fat. That's it. Nutrition is no magic so isn't eating vegan.

      If you stop eating animal protein, greenhouse gas emissions would fall by just 2.6%.
      If you stop driving cars, taking foreign holidays, having children and leading a materialistic lifestyle you will drastically cut your carbon emissions, but because vegans are the biggest hypocrites going they won't consider doing this.
      Also more sentient animals die in plant based food production for human consumption than by farming red meat for human consumption.

    My husband is vegetarian since he was 4years old. When I started dating him, I was eating meat, but slowly I transitioned to vegetarian diet during 6 years and I am vegetarian almost a year now. We have 2yo son, who is vegetarian too.
    Since beginning of this year, we started to eat more beans and less cheese and almost no eggs (we eat eggs only when my parents gave them to us, they have chickens and they are taking care of them with love)
    Honestly, I never felt better. I always had problems with my weight and how I lost all my pregnancy weight and I am loosing more and more without starving.
    I know that this is food choice to stay healthy and more environmentally friendly and I do not have to eat those cute animals.
