    Here's a way to throw a little razzle-dazzle into your harmonica playing: a heavily syncopated one-chord breakdown. Your guide is Adam Gussow of Oxford, Mississippi.
    Harp key: A

    Sorry if I offended you, it was not my intention to criticize you or accuse you of copyright or intellectual properties violations. All I wanted to do was let you know that I have been paying attention to what you've been saying. Thank you, thank you, thank you for the you tube lessons. they have taken my harmonica playing up further than anything I've done on my own in the last 40 years.

    Is great that you broke down this riff. At the beginning of the video it seemed really hard stuff, and still it is, but breaking it down into manageable pieces makes it possible for the average non-professional harmonica player.

    This riff sounds SO good! Thank you for breaking it down so slowly. I can see right off that I have to work on my breathing technique because all the draw notes in a row are giving me trouble.

    • @bertwerbrouck
      @bertwerbrouck 10 років тому +1

      I'll suggest you try to spot why it gives you trouble. If it's a rythm problem, play staccato (all the notes or some of them) in a way that complements the groove, that makes it "live". If the problem is bend-related, work on switching from a unbent note to a bent note, especially between 2 draw and 3 draw bent a semi and a full tone. 3 draw bends are hard to master but gives a lot of notes to groove on and to respond to the chords in your phrasing. Adam does this a lot (and he's not the only one but he's damn good at it. Check J. Ricci lesson on the 3 draw bends. He makes a full 12 bar blues using only 3 draw bends. Made sense to me and led me to major breaktrough in my playing). If it's a breathing problem, you can blow by the nose while playing the side to side 2 blow and 3 blow. It may help you to catch you breath on all these draw notes, thus giving you more precision. Hope that helps Dan. Have fun ;)

      Much obliged. I'm sure my biggest problem is lack of practice time. With a full time job and 2 grand kids to take care of, I'm limited, so these tips should definitely help.

      Repetition is indeed pretty much the only real way to permanently solve the problem you are describing, but some strategy is involved. Air flow is ridiculously important with any wind instrument and harmonica is deceiving because it is very forgiving when it comes to air velocity... but managing the air is another story altogether. If you watch some of Adam's other videos and listen to his playing a lot trying to duplicate every little detail, you start to figure out that he, just like other players, is using very small gaps in his playing or effects like "chucking" to expel or intake air as needed. Adam goes over in one video (I forget which) how he actually opens his mouth up further than you think on the 1-2-3 blow you hear him and many other harp players going for all the time, solely for the purpose of expelling air.
      All harp players figure out over time where to "spend" their air and where to save it. You can tell that he's barely playing above a mezzo-piano or so for the bulk of the riff like the stuff on the 2-draw and 1-draw especially since they don't need much air to sound properly, then he's accenting the 3-4 draw (for multiple reasons).
      One painful exercise I subject myself to once in a while is I forcing myself to play something I'm learning at piano or pianissimo. This forces you to tighten up your playing and will ensure you actually run out of oxygen before you run out of room to draw air into. Then you can start throttling up more and figuring out how you want to spend your air.

      @Modernbluesharmonica  9 років тому +1

      Yes, you're absolutely right. And Magic Dick got the move from Sonny Boy (Rice Miller), he told me. The truly new stuff is rare; what's important is to combine and recombine in creative ways.

      Glenn Nielson : Actually, no. Sonny Boy's riff shares one specific move that I employ here--the 2b 3b 2b diddle-daddle--but most of what I'm doing here is my own stuff.
