Ryuki is a strong classic and still one of my absolute favourites. It manages to reinvent the series from the ground up without veering away from what makes the Kamen Rider series what it is, but re-contextualized in a world where the line that separates man and monster is scarily thin.
Fun fact: Ryuki is the main inspiration behind the Fate franchise. Gen Urobuchi even Fate/Zero & Madoka Magica being inspired by Ryuki. Urobuchi later on got to do a full circle by making his own KR show: *Kamen Rider Gaim* . Check it out if you have time.

Faiz is a great season, and easily has my favorite suits and toy gimmicks in the franchise. It was actually the first season I went to buy a CSM belt for, so I hope you enjoy it too. I feel like if you love Ryuki this much, you might love Gaim. The head writer wrote Madoka Magica and Fate/Zero, and has gone on record to say how much Ryuki specifically has influenced those two works. Gaim as a result has heavily the same tone as Ryuki where it is multiple Kamen Riders fighting but not for a battle royale, but to prove that their ideology is the one that will shape the world.
I'm currently watching Ryukii and I have loved it. I'm probably going to do either Kuuga or Gaim next. Also how can you not talk about the banger OP song.

Ryuki is definitely a great place to start. I’m so glad we now have a new member. In same vain as Ryuki, I recommend you Geats. It’s also a battle Royale and trust me, it gets real dark real fast.

I got this video recommended to me and I agree a lot with a bunch of stuff in this video. Ryuki was my 3rd KR series (I started with Kuuga, then Agito to Ryuki just watching from Heisei's release order.) Its also surprising at how much stuff this show influences when you take a look at it closely, the most obvious being of course Madoka. Its never too late to get started on watching Kamen RIder honestly, the shows are timeless and I'm glad people are still enjoying them.
Each rider in this season represents a certain aspect in survivability and i think its really cool, I hope you watch Faiz and Blade next because they're both really good aswell to make a video essay on. Their themes are strong aswell
Advice for future watches based on what you’ve liked so far: Gaim, Geats, and Black! Some recommendations just based on my tastes: Kuuga, Agito, Drive, and Stronger! I know Showa seasons are pretty niche within the fandom, but I really do think Black and Stronger are some excellent seasons. Black feels more in-line with the modern shows, and Stronger is just really damn good. It still has that Showa campiness, but I think its characters really play off of eachother well and there are some actually pretty good emotional hurdles for our main Rider, and his arc towards the later half of the show is just excellent.
This was an interesting look into the thoughts of someone who's new to my favorite franchise. Glad you enjoyed Ryuki, it was also my first series and is still one of my favorites. Hope you get a kick out of Faiz, it's also a wild ride.
While I love the Kamen Rider aesthetic, I'm not someone who's super intimate with the franchise. I know somethings in passing, and have watched some episodes, I only really watched Build from beginning to end and am gonna move on to either Zero-One or Ex-Aid when I find the motivation to. That being said, my first exposure was through Ryuki's adaptation for the west, Dragon Knight. While I can't say that it's better or worse than Ryuki, see my previous statement, I can say that I loved watching that when I was younger, and still holds a place in my heart.

I love Ryuki, it's my favorite Rider series, I've seen it 3 times, and I'm currently rewatching it with a friend... it's so great, I love Ryuki. As for the spin-offs, the Agito crossover / Hyper Battle Video is a little comic relief thing, you don't need to know *anything* about Agito to watch it; just short and sweet. The 13 Riders Special is a true AU with more of a plot, and I really liked everything up until the ending(s) - but that was just because I really got too pulled into the story than I should have for a special lol Episode Final is an AU of the finale, basically, and in my opinion I'd sum it up as "awful ideas but great execution". The concept behind Ryuga, the Black Ryuki in the video, is really interesting, but I don't think it fits the series at all, and while there are some other stupid moments, it has some great music and one of the BEST fight scenes in the series. I don't like Rider Time Ryuki. It's a Zi-O special / 18-years-later thing that just doesn't live up to being Ryuki. It's nice for the fanservice, but the soul of the original just isn't there, between being an AU, and between recasting so many of the Riders and not properly developing them (in my eyes, at least) But I wouldn't say spin-offs are so bad they *should* be skipped, since there's a lot of people who do love them, and at the very least there's something to talk about in all of them, whether it be how different people handle the characters or how they're rewritten to adapt to crossovers!
Ryuki always has been my favorite series and I've watched all heisei riders. It's one of those "turning point" shows in the series because it changed a lot from what KR was originally. Kamen rider was always about a hero of justice fighting against villains who share his power, which ryuki and later riders do follow to a tee but ryuki was the first to really introduce many kamen riders each with their own views and motivations with some being morally grey, selfish or outright evil. It still sends the messages of justice and turning your life around to do good that riders before did, but in a new perspective where good guys don't necessarily always win. Yeah, got so much more to say but I think this is enough for now. Also do watch 555 it's awesome and also deals with very personal stories that hit hard. I'd also recommend the movies KR ZO and KR J and the series Kamen Rider Black if you want to give showa riders another shot!
Funnily enough I actually remember watching Kuuga all the way to Decade when it aired in my country with local dub. I specifically remember Kuuga getting his belt painfully, Agito's transformation (although barely), and my personal favorite kick, is Ryuki's Final Vent. Still stuck to my mind to this day. I was probably like 7 or 8 at the time 😂.
Ryuki's post season content ranges from decent to pretty good so you don't have to worry about them. Seeing that you have Ryuga in your video you've probably seen one of the Ryuki movies, but there is another special called "Rider Time: Ryuki". It's a 15th anniversary spin off for the show, a decent amount of the cast returned too. Even though it's loosely connected to Kamen Rider Zi-O (an anniversary season), you can probably watch it without checking out Zi-O (Zi-O only appears in the end to finish a monster). For the 20th anniversary, some Ryuki characters made a small cameo in KR Geats & Revice Battle Royale crosover film. So if you decide to check out Geats and/or Revice in the future then you have something to look forward to! Oh and also, Asakura keeps popping up in obscure KR spin offs for some reason and he goes pretty hard in those too (I'm not gonna go into detail because they're crossover heavy).
Ryuki was my 3rd season. Ive watched 12 more since then, and despite that its still my #1 by a mile. I agree with all of the praise you say here. Shinji was the character who especially felt close to me, and he is also still my favorite rider character. If you enjoyed Ryuki i HIGHLY recommend Geats. Geats was heavily inspired by this season and is basically a modern take on it. Even has a crossover with Ryuki (and Revice) in a movie about 14 episodes in!
My favourite rider and rider series is Kamen rider W Shotaro and Philip have perfect chemistry with each other and I love the noir detective style of storytelling.
man i thought this was some random kid show back in the day then boom! it went hard, id recommend tryn go backward to kuuga and agito the two shows before ryuki the storytellin really tugs yer heat.
@@bobzilla0914 I'd say Heisei is the golden Kamen Rider era. Almost every single one of the recent KR shows pay tribute to Heisei riders anyway, So watching Heisei first is a good way to not get spoiled by recent shows.
I highly recommend watching through kamen rider W, OOO, and Fourze. Not only did they help mold the gimmicky nature of current rider series, the three also feel the most "current" out of the older series so its a good starting point to ease into current rider shows. Also somewhat spoiler but ryuki has a true ending! Its called "Rider Time: Kamen Rider Ryuki". It shows the riders years down the line that crosses paths with kamen rider Zi-O. Nothing too heavy spoiler for Zi-O so highly recommend for ryuki's story!
I love Faiz but apparently it's not for everyone. But if you do end upnliking it, I recommend Den-O next. If Faiz doesn't connect with you that much, then I recommend Blade.

My favourite Kamen Rider is Den-O, W, Ex-Aid, Build and Zero-One. But also if you like Kamen Rider that goes more into adult theme(with more violence, blood & gore and somewhat deep story), I would really recommend you to watch Kamen Rider Amazons or Kamen Rider Black Sun.
I was also destined to watch kamen rider someday. As a kid i liked power rangers but then I discovered the wider tokusatsu and watched a bunch of videos without ever watching the shows. I tried to watch ex aid and revice in 2021 but my weird ass didn't like watching episodes in my pc at the time so i stopped. But then this year I got into kamen rider again and I watched den-o as my true first show and it was amazing with memorable characters. I was able to finish it in a month. I also started to watch the new kamen rider show Gavv and good series so far. watched OOO which I was able to manage to finish in a week and was also really good, and now I'm watching kamen rider W and i've kinda been slow on that show possibly because I'm only on episode 10 and I haven't reached the point where it gets really good yet. So overall kamen rider is cool and I hope to watch more riders like ryuki or even just more tokusatsu in general in the future. Also heads up if you wanna watch den-o, you NEED to watch that show's first movie "I'm born" since it canonically takes place in between episodes 27 and 28 and the show has a whole arc that leads up to that movie
Only in Ryuki do you see one of the main villains in your transforming hero show get gunned down by a police squad, wielding a pipe and screaming like a madman.. This was a show designed to sell toys to kids. And I fucking love it.

I’m going through kamen rider in release order from the beginning of heisei as that’s about when i would’ve caught it as a child on tv if they did have it(I grew up watching ultraman tiga so that’s the timeframe) and I’m on blade rn but damn ryuki was on another level. I binged the entire thing in like a week then watched the movies and rider time because I just needed more of it it was so interesting(every other season took me at least 2 weeks) I’m horrible at explaining but like seeing the clashing morals or whatever and the characters are all fun too I fucking love that potentially bisexual bastard lawyer man kitaoka. Also man that ending was just wow. Kuuga might be my favourite show from the series but ryuki is my favourite rider show if it makes sense like kuuga is just an amazing show overall even outside the kamen rider elements but ryuki is the peak of rider shows from what I’ve watched. Also since you’re watching faiz next get prepared for inoueism that man loves misunderstanding and miscommunication to create drama but strangely I wasn’t really put off by it in faiz yes it was frustrating but I found it the good kind of frustrating
Kamen Rider Dragon Knight, the only good American Kamen Rider season, was actually more than Ryuki, even getting a sequel book. Ryuki has had several returns which is nice, Ouja in one storyline, through figure story line, had gotten a Survive Form, in turn got the power to combine about every Rider Contract Beast. Also Den-O was my first season and one of my favorite.
3:22 Well get use to that because Kamen rider is gay in general haha. For Ryuki, Haven't watched it yet but I LOVE the aesthetic because of my love of animals and medieval knights. KR Knight's suit is probably in my top 10 rider suits

I remember marathoning this show back in the school day. the ending really left me frustrated for many years. the ending grows on me as I get mature I guess SPOILER!!! 12yo me: WHY YOU CALLED THE SHOW KAMEN RIDER RYUKI IF THE DUDE DIED 2ND EPISODE BEFORE END!!! it's like calling the show Batman but Batman dies and Robin is the one who continues the fight.
I'm truly glad you enjoyed Ryuki. As a lifelong fan of the franchise, Kamen Rider Ryuki is not just my favorite of the entire franchise, but my favorite series period and it's heartening to see someone appreciate it. Honestly speaking, while I think it's one of the most beloved in the franchise in its native home of Japan, it's also one of the most divisive in the Western fanbase because its primary message just isn't one that gels with what Western fans expect, but I'm glad you seem to have picked up on it. 555 is definitely a good follow-up to Ryuki, because if you loved Ryuki, I think 555 has a lot to offer you that's similar but still unique to itself too. Really, Ryuki-555-Blade form quite a trilogy, although I'd say that part of it is due to that... 'bisexuality' you mentioned. If I might make a recommendation, while Ryuki is my personal favorite of the franchise, I think Kamen Rider W is probably what could objectively be considered the franchise's best, and there's a statistically extremely high chance that you'll enjoy it.
I do not like Ryuki. I never have. Most of the characters are morons (especially Yui’s grandma and Shinji), the story even if it wasn’t one of the worst example “deconstruction” that took the franchise eight years to recover from, almost got the franchise canceled again after only being back for three years at that point was a complete slog, and only four of the Riders at most actually deserved to be called such and the title character wasn’t even one them. Thank goodness Dragon Knight and Decade were my intro in to the franchise. I might have dropped it if Ryuki was.
Ryuki was a good show, but that ending broke it for me, I can't describe how much I hated it haha. And since it was your first KR show it will forever be at least in a Top 5 because everyone grows a special aattachment to their first, but I would Argue there are way better show. Kabuto, Build and Saber be looking from the corner, lol Spoiler Warning: About Ryuki, The character development, specially for Shinji, was genuinly so good, but then BOOM! _Reset._ Taking him all back to the annoying idiot from the start, since because the Battleroyale thingy never happened, all he learned and understood about the world and himself never happened either. I DESPISE the reset. You can argue is happy because also without the battleroyale all the lost lives were never lost, but they don't reference nor say a thing about that... I know there are alterntive endings, but thats what they choose for the main show and I shall criticize it for it. I rather have themm all dead than the resest, the deaths would at least being a unique ending.
I read that the one at the end is a parallel world created by the Kanzaki siblings so Shinji and the others are still dead and nothing is actually reset
Do note that every Rider in Ryuki that died (and I mean EVERY Rider) dies an ironic death. It's a theme of Ryuki as well.
Ryuki was basically my tournament of power and instead of just strong people fighting its people fighting on a emotional and psychological side.

Always happy to see more people talk about karate bugmen. Ryuki is a great start and don't worry, the 2 shows succeeding it are even gayer
man i thought this was some random kid show back in the day then boom! it went hard, id recommend tryn go backward to kuuga and agito the two shows before ryuki the storytellin really tugs yer heat.
The fun part is there's no ending for ryuki ,the always reset to another timeline.
I would recommend you watch W, OOO, Gaim and Build. These have the best storytelling that kamen rider series can offer

For a more recent recommendation, how about Geats? It tackles the same plotline as Ryuki but with more riders and more Modern take...
@@bobzilla0914 I'd say Heisei is the golden Kamen Rider era. Almost every single one of the recent KR shows pay tribute to Heisei riders anyway, So watching Heisei first is a good way to not get spoiled by recent shows.

I highly recommend watching through kamen rider W, OOO, and Fourze. Not only did they help mold the gimmicky nature of current rider series, the three also feel the most "current" out of the older series so its a good starting point to ease into current rider shows.
Also somewhat spoiler but ryuki has a true ending! Its called "Rider Time: Kamen Rider Ryuki". It shows the riders years down the line that crosses paths with kamen rider Zi-O. Nothing too heavy spoiler for Zi-O so highly recommend for ryuki's story!

I love Faiz but apparently it's not for everyone. But if you do end upnliking it, I recommend Den-O next. If Faiz doesn't connect with you that much, then I recommend Blade.

My favourite Kamen Rider is Den-O, W, Ex-Aid, Build and Zero-One.
But also if you like Kamen Rider that goes more into adult theme(with more violence, blood & gore and somewhat deep story), I would really recommend you to watch Kamen Rider Amazons or Kamen Rider Black Sun.

I was also destined to watch kamen rider someday. As a kid i liked power rangers but then I discovered the wider tokusatsu and watched a bunch of videos without ever watching the shows. I tried to watch ex aid and revice in 2021 but my weird ass didn't like watching episodes in my pc at the time so i stopped. But then this year I got into kamen rider again and I watched den-o as my true first show and it was amazing with memorable characters. I was able to finish it in a month. I also started to watch the new kamen rider show Gavv and good series so far. watched OOO which I was able to manage to finish in a week and was also really good, and now I'm watching kamen rider W and i've kinda been slow on that show possibly because I'm only on episode 10 and I haven't reached the point where it gets really good yet. So overall kamen rider is cool and I hope to watch more riders like ryuki or even just more tokusatsu in general in the future. Also heads up if you wanna watch den-o, you NEED to watch that show's first movie "I'm born" since it canonically takes place in between episodes 27 and 28 and the show has a whole arc that leads up to that movie

Hey bro,long time Kamen Rider fan here,please for the love of god watch every other Yasuko Kobayashi show(she’s Ryuki’s head writer) she’s a favourite of Toei and the fans in terms of writing,watch Den-O,OOO and Amazons
Also if you want a non-Kobayashi show watch Gaim its head writer wrote Madoka Magica and was influenced by Ryuki

I’m going through kamen rider in release order from the beginning of heisei as that’s about when i would’ve caught it as a child on tv if they did have it(I grew up watching ultraman tiga so that’s the timeframe) and I’m on blade rn but damn ryuki was on another level. I binged the entire thing in like a week then watched the movies and rider time because I just needed more of it it was so interesting(every other season took me at least 2 weeks) I’m horrible at explaining but like seeing the clashing morals or whatever and the characters are all fun too I fucking love that potentially bisexual bastard lawyer man kitaoka. Also man that ending was just wow. Kuuga might be my favourite show from the series but ryuki is my favourite rider show if it makes sense like kuuga is just an amazing show overall even outside the kamen rider elements but ryuki is the peak of rider shows from what I’ve watched. Also since you’re watching faiz next get prepared for inoueism that man loves misunderstanding and miscommunication to create drama but strangely I wasn’t really put off by it in faiz yes it was frustrating but I found it the good kind of frustrating

Kamen Rider Dragon Knight, the only good American Kamen Rider season, was actually more than Ryuki, even getting a sequel book. Ryuki has had several returns which is nice, Ouja in one storyline, through figure story line, had gotten a Survive Form, in turn got the power to combine about every Rider Contract Beast. Also Den-O was my first season and one of my favorite.

I'm truly glad you enjoyed Ryuki. As a lifelong fan of the franchise, Kamen Rider Ryuki is not just my favorite of the entire franchise, but my favorite series period and it's heartening to see someone appreciate it. Honestly speaking, while I think it's one of the most beloved in the franchise in its native home of Japan, it's also one of the most divisive in the Western fanbase because its primary message just isn't one that gels with what Western fans expect, but I'm glad you seem to have picked up on it.
555 is definitely a good follow-up to Ryuki, because if you loved Ryuki, I think 555 has a lot to offer you that's similar but still unique to itself too. Really, Ryuki-555-Blade form quite a trilogy, although I'd say that part of it is due to that... 'bisexuality' you mentioned.
If I might make a recommendation, while Ryuki is my personal favorite of the franchise, I think Kamen Rider W is probably what could objectively be considered the franchise's best, and there's a statistically extremely high chance that you'll enjoy it.

I do not like Ryuki. I never have. Most of the characters are morons (especially Yui’s grandma and Shinji), the story even if it wasn’t one of the worst example “deconstruction” that took the franchise eight years to recover from, almost got the franchise canceled again after only being back for three years at that point was a complete slog, and only four of the Riders at most actually deserved to be called such and the title character wasn’t even one them. Thank goodness Dragon Knight and Decade were my intro in to the franchise. I might have dropped it if Ryuki was.
Ryuki was a good show, but that ending broke it for me, I can't describe how much I hated it haha.
And since it was your first KR show it will forever be at least in a Top 5 because everyone grows a special aattachment to their first, but I would Argue there are way better show.
What are your next targets now? You said 555, which others are like first in the Watchlist?

About Ryuki, The character development, specially for Shinji, was genuinly so good, but then BOOM! _Reset._ Taking him all back to the annoying idiot from the start, since because the Battleroyale thingy never happened, all he learned and understood about the world and himself never happened either. I DESPISE the reset.
You can argue is happy because also without the battleroyale all the lost lives were never lost, but they don't reference nor say a thing about that... I know there are alterntive endings, but thats what they choose for the main show and I shall criticize it for it. I rather have themm all dead than the resest, the deaths would at least being a unique ending.
I read that the one at the end is a parallel world created by the Kanzaki siblings so Shinji and the others are still dead and nothing is actually reset
