Agree on all the tips! We've got a 15 year old Border Collie and bringing her (even though she's slower than she used to be and can't explore too far) is wonderful. Watching her enjoy herself in nature brings us so much joy. Not filming? Yeah, I'm learning that one. As much fun as it is running around trying to get great shots, I agree that it takes you out of the moment and can make you miss being present with other people around you. I just did a solo motorcycle ride down the west coast, and purposely didn't bring my camera gear. It was really relaxing not thinking I should get shots of various things along the way and just enjoying being there.
Yes, I thought I had seen your Border Collie so I checked some of your videos and she is in the Shakedown video you did last year at 7:58. She is awesome! I totally agree with your comment about how just watching our pets can bring so much joy. That is sure the case with our new puppy Syndey. She has been an amazing add to the family!
Greetings from Hamburg Germany I am headed to Iceland in 3 weeks with my car. So I will remember your tips. A couple of them I already did. Thanks for the good videos. I love 'em Karsten
We totally agree with your zen tips and it’s how we’ve rocked our overland dispersed camping trips for years. We circle an area to go explore and then go for it. Checking out every dirt track we find. Some are duds but some are pure gold. We don’t have a brother to tease but we certainly do enough of that with each other. Thanks for sharing the adventure.
I totally agree with Tip 4. I’m not a content creator but I do enjoy photography. I know that sometimes I just need to “Put the camera down!” I’m glad to meet Sydney (sp?) Teach her the “call back.” That command saves lives.
I have done still photography and video most of my adult life. I love both but I have to say I wish I had learned earlier how wonderful it is to sometimes just be present and in the moment without a lens. Sydney is an absolute joy. I completely agree with your comments about "call back." It was one of the first things we worked on with her. We use a different term. We call it the "Command Come." It is more authoritative than our regular whistle or "come" and she recognizes the difference. She is only 7 months old now but has all the makings to be an amazing companion. Cheers!
Gorgeous area out there. Definitely some zen moments. Completely agree that everything doesn’t have to be filmed, it’s ok to just enjoy the trip and the moments that come along. Love the level showing how steep the grade is, the camera never seems to show the reality.
I couldn’t agree more about specific destinations and waypoints. It feels more like a task. That's A good way to show how steep that hill is! Great tips, man. I hope you all are having a great day.
I just watched your iKamper quick release video. I was going to leave a comment but comments are turned off. I don't know if that is intentional but thought I'd give you a heads up.
A LOT of people are time constrained. So, it is difficult to enjoy the journey and take in the sights. But you are correct, IMO. If you are going on a trip to relieve stress and take a break from the hustle of everyday life, it is best to just go where the trail takes you and enjoy what you see along the way. It is not the destination, it is the journey that should be enjoyed. That being said, when I highway drive across CA. the speed limit is never fast enough to get out of that place. 🤣
Thank you for making this video. This video hit home for me on so many levels as I love offroad trips, peace, quiet, wildlife, relaxing by a stream, etc... and do not like recording... Melissa loves recording so we have to have a balance. :-) As a content creator, I couldn't agree more. We do many trips that we do not record or post to UA-cam for this very reason. It is nice to have the video to look back on and share on UA-cam but in my opinion, making a show out of a jeeping trip makes the trip so much less enjoyable.
Yes, I really like the carefree feeling of just enjoying the trail and the people I am with and not thinking about what shots I need to get. You said you have a balance. I think that is the key. I've always loved still photography and video as hobbies but I really enjoy just leaving the cameras at home sometimes. Balance.
I've been having similar revelations recently. It's affecting the way I travel but also the way my overland build is progressing (or regressing). Dumping a lot of gear, filming less, enjoying the process of the journey. I love that the overland community has grown but I also find myself rejecting the hyperbole and unnecessary gear. Thanks for the candor.
That's a great approach! I've spent a lot of looking through a camera lens. I'll still take pictures and videos but it took me too long to find the right balance. Thanks for the comment!
I definitely agree about putting the camera down. Other than YT and dead gram, we are not really active, and got NO social media accounts. We put the camera down 80% of the time when we go out. People should try it, it's rejuvenating.
Agreed! It is alway great to disconnect. Looking back, my best memories do not come from times I was filming, they come from times I was not. So, it is good to find the right balance. Cheers!
I am waiting for the episode that is entirely brotherly competition scenes on different overlanding skills....guaranteed entertainment ha ha! You guys are great!
Lots of great advice. We’re always striving to improve our experience… and though we’ve put a few of these into practice, there are other points we still have to pursue. Thanks for sharing! Subbed! :)
Thanks! The concept of how we improve our experience in the outdoors has been a topic in a couple of my videos. Mostly, it has been great to hear ideas from viewers. Good stuff! Thanks for watching!
I believe in at least taking a couple pictures, or short videos of any trip . It's nice to watch it later or look at the pictures. I have learned to be in the moment and still film! But obsessive filming and picture taking can take away definitely! Early as far as having a basic plan is good. But there's a lot of fun in winging it! Too much planning , can definitely take away from a fun trip.
Oh man, I've never seen a mt. goat in Oregon! That's super cool! I try to go with no plan and it never seems to work out because I always have a general idea where I intend to go, thankfully I end up getting lost a lot and that pretty much turns into the same thing :) Level worked good! Sydney is taking to training well! I do "no filming" trips as well. At least not filming for content. I like to get pictures and videos of my friends and family that doesn't have a purpose aside from memories. I really have to make a conscious effort though.
The goats were a shocker. Once the two big males noticed me, they actually moved closer to keep an eye on me; made me a bit nervous at first. They’re beautiful animals.
Tips for a better life: More goats, More Sydney, and More harassing your brother! The pranks and ribbing y'all give each other are my favorite part of this channel!
That's a good idea! I use a GNSS Surveyor which delivers 1-meter positioning out of the box to Gaia on my iPad. This is an overkill for most people especially with so many navigation device choices now. But, I love rolling up to a fork in the trail and knowing with 1 meter precision exactly where I am and witch way to turn. It is not something that is necessary or that I would recommend for weekend overlanding. I got it several years ago for an expedition-style trip.
So annoying 4:30 alot of our 4wd parks do not let us bring our dogs.. you see them around - all the time but yeah our ranger can issue fines upond discovery of a pet in any national park, state parks allow it but most are far and beyond a short trip. Great video mate.

The mountains were actually pretty spectacular that day. It was one of those crisp, clear days. The GoPro makes them look so small and far away but in reality, they made quite a statement on the horizon!
