As a Scotsman I'm pleased that you are reviewing Scottish delicacies Gaz. I recommend going to a traditional Butcher shop and getting some steak slice lorne sausage.
Glaswegian here, square sausage is part of the staple diet for breakfast, ideally served on a Scottish roll and doubled up with black pudding or a egg.
Love black heart Lorne, got myself a breakfast stack from Galloway, lorne, haggis, black pudding. Love it with a side of potato scones and fruit pudding
A lot of it is stuff I can't buy here in Newfoundland, or probably wouldn't buy anyways. In saying that, I do find these types of food tasting and comparison videos interesting.
Don't forget INSPIRATIONAL 😅 I've been "jollied along" to buy a few things from various places I would never have even dreamed of existing... THIS KINDA CONTENT IS WHY I HAVE UA-cam PREMIUM 😊
Reminds me of Sunday breakfast as a kid in 60-70's Glasgow. Square sausage, steak slice were the best, potato scone, fried egg and fried dumpling. Fantastic! Mum used to use them in stovies too.
@@nikkijayne4451 I love the taste of it. Whenever I’ve cooked with it, it seems to melt okay. I’m not keen on many brands of butter, especially the very yellow coloured one, for some reason.
Hall's Square Sausage was the best supermarket version, although each Scottish butcher made their own which were always superior to any supermarket pre-packed versions. Now that I live in Yorkshire this is the closest I can get and it's not too bad. A Scottish morning roil, a slice of square sausage, a tattie scone, slice of Hall's black pudding and a fried egg. The breakfast of kings (and heart attacks). I heartily recommend you try Scotch Pies, and the famous Macaroni Pie too.
aww...wow, this brings back memories... my step dad was scottish and we went to see some of his family up there (not sure where now) when i was about 13-14, and i had my first scottish fryup breakfast and it included these types of sausage and fried potato bread etc...was amazing..!
As someone in their seventies, I can recommend living by the rule of "moderation in all things" it's got me this far, and I only need one wheel barrow to collect my monthly medication LOL. Great vid thanks.
I love square sausage, two of them overlapped are perfect between buttered slices of pan bread, real comfort food. In Northern Ireland, vegetable roll is still popular, despite the name it's primarily a meat product, it's smaller and round, but isn't a million miles away in taste from square sausage, though there's no pork in it, just beef.
I was brung up on Clydeside and we never called it anything but SLICE! I have very fond memories of it, on a roll with a LOAD of fried onion, and some brown sauce, heaven in a handful! Like most old codgers though, it remembers better than now!
I prefer the square sausage’s from the butchers and I always put them in the grill because of the amount of grease that comes out from within them the grill is just a more healthier option. I have tried them frozen square sausages before but I’m really not a big fan I will always prefer the butchers ones!
Square sausages are well used in Scotland. They also make up part of a full Scottish breakfast. To be honest, I can't remember if I ate any on my trips to Scotland in the past. If it were readily available in my local stores, I would certainly give them a try. 👍👍😃👍👍.
Our local butcher sells black eye lorne sausage, it has a circle of black pudding in the middle , great in a well fired roll with a fried egg on top 😋😋😋
I’m Scottish but I don’t like Lorne sausage but I absolutely love Scottish bread rolls the burnt ones are my favourite . You can’t get the real ones in England .
Nothing like our square slice! Although I buy them from the butchers which will be better quality than the frozen ones. You need a crispy roll, potato scone and some brown sauce next time, Gareth😊
I am a retired postman and Belchers in Prestwick was one of my delivery point,I also have friends who work there,it has subsequently been taken over by Halls, you should try their beef olives they are great,My son lives in Sheffield and every time we visit we have to take him square sliced sausage, or lorne sausage as we call it up here, and potato scones as he can't get them down there,it's better if you get good steak slice fresh from a Scottish butcher rather than pre packed frozen, you need to put a fried egg and potato scone in that bun(morning roll up here) with the square slice for a cracking Scottish breakfast roll ,another great video
Hah weird see this, just had these this morning! Always loved square sausage. They aren't as good as they used to be but this is the best brand. They used to be a bit thicker, which kept em juicier. I do cook em more than you did, so they are more crispy outside. The other brand used be Primrose or Plumtree i think now, but not as good as the original Belchers

Thanks for the reminder. Ive not had square sausages in ages, think a visit to farmfoods is on the cards, been ages since been there. Normally shop at Aldis, getting a bit bored of it and need a bit of variety.
I always have this in the freezer, got to be careful how long they’re cooked for though . Wife does them like tiles 🙈 perfect combo is square sausage, black pudding, and an egg on top .
bought these a couple of years ago they were about £1.00 so 10 pence per sausage they tasted ok but you know for the price that the ingredients were not great , great video as always
Sliced sausage consists of meat parings(brock) in Scottish butchers terms, minced with rusk, water, and beef seasoning all mixed together and pressed into a long loaf type tin to get it's shape then removed to a tray and refrigerated to firm up for slicing. I made it for 49 years before retiring. Cant imagine what quality you would get for 10p a slice tho
Hi Gareth ... I've only just discovered your site in the past two weeks and I'm loving it . I'm 60 years old and I must have the same tastes in food because I agree with all your conclusions ....all I'm waiting for now is a review of the famous and best Irish black pudding ......Colnakilty black pudding ...... My favourite breakfast roll with a fried egg , here a tip when frying don't add oil just heat them gently and they will cook in there own fat , the taste is way better , obviously butcher shop made ones are far far superior than the frozen ones ...... I'm going to have to have one at the weekend now 😂 cheers bud 🏴
Nice this Gareth 🙂. Even better on a Scottish loaf but then anything is better in a Scottish loaf. Its the thing i have to bring back from Scotland every time. Heading up for the next few weekends on the trot be seeking my fave bread out
Hi Gaz, you can get Lorne sausage ( square sausage ) from Iceland foods, Sadly they are Half as thick as the Belchers 1's from Farm Foods.. They used to be £1 at Iceland, now are £1.25 for 8 skinny slices!!!!.. The Belchers used to be £1.49, 3 weeks ago at farm foods .. But Oooooo So Good with a slice of Black pudding and an Egg on top ... Keep up the good work on the channel ... Andy ..
Great for making a sausage buttie with sliced bread as you don't need to slice the sausage like you normally have to. I'm the other way round with sauce, red on sausage butties and brown on bacon butties, which reminds me I got some just essentials bacon yesterday, very good quality with very little fat, for £1.40 compared with other supermarkets bacon at the same price.
Lovely stuff! I eat these regularly lol you can get them in the butchers up here with salt n chilli on them! Their amazing but the heartburn is a killer 😂
I must admit Gaz, they look nice, with egg and even maybe a slice of cheese. Also what a reasonable price for a decent Product. These videos are so special.
Oh thanks for flagging this up as available at Farm Foods. I know this brand and like most square sausage to be fair. Scots often have a favourite butcher brand, but no choice in England, so these'll do for me. Great in sandwiches and for breakfasts etc. and they cook really well in the Ninja Foodie too, air fried or baked! Can I be cheeky and say yours looked slightly overcooked for me, but of course each to his own!! (But a little less cooking means you don't need an egg to 'get it down'. Lovely grub! 👍😊
I used to get these frozen in the co-op. Not the best you can get but quite addictive. They had a habit of "coming back" on you. So much so, I called them repeat meat. MSG, is entirely natural as its one part salt, one part mushed fibre (papaya?). It's basically just like adding a wee bit more salt.
You should have tried to find a Scottish morning roll for the sausage. Don’t know if you can get them from farmfoods? As they used to be good for some Scottish items like plain loaf, but they don’t sell them anymore more. Might do rolls though.
Lorne (square) sausage should only ever be eaten on a proper Scottish morning roll mate, but you got the brown sauce right haha, love the channel, keep up the good work from Perth, Scotland.
They look nice Gareth, I've been looking for something like that. I tried the Richmond patties as I only like Richmond sausages but I didn't like them. Another good review
Reminiscing 👍🏻 Always talk about the good old days to pass history on because times are changing soooooooo fast ! That needed cheese slices, fried onions and an egg 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Get a bit of cheese and bacon inbetween that bad boy, with an egg. I used to love these. Don't see them about anymore in England though sadly. Glad you enjoyed
Last time I watched your channel, you’d mentioned you needed to eat better and get in shape. You certainly look more fit! Congratulations, as it’s no easy feat once you get older. Cheers from Columbia, Missouri, USA.
In Scottish school dinners we used to get Square steamed sausage in onion 🧅 & Gravy with either chips or mashed potatoes and veg it was butchers sausage so much better quality
*Awesome review here 👌🙌👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻* I was not expecting to hear you say they were salty,so that was a surprise.last time I tried, which is several years ago,I felt they were tasteless. You remember the square sausage from years back? I think maybe you would if you have had them back in the day, you are part of the 72” squad just like me- when things had flavour and our parents cooked with lard ,hahaaa
It's only frylight that wrecks your pans, I think the spray oil u were using is ok, I use the Morrisons one and it's basically proper oil in spray form, frylight to me is just foam!!!!
The Food Warehouse (Iceland to older folk) also do square Lorne slices. £1.25 for 8 slices. The ingredients are almost identical - Pork (31%) . Beef (5%) . plus the MSG etc - but the nutritional values are slightly different. per 100g -- Energy = 1130kJ 271kcal - Fat = 19.2g sats 8.3g - Carb = 13.3g sugars 0.3g - Fibre = 0.6g - Protein = 11.9g - Salt = 2.0g Maybe time for a head-to-head 👍👍
love these videos square sausage is awesome . Have you tried icelands quarter pounder hash browns awesome with a fried egg and/or bacon. Also excellent n their own in a roll with brown sauce
I believe the people saying not to use the spray oil in a non stick pan are on about spray oils that use gas/aerosols to spray, but the type of bottle you have doesn't use that as it's a pump type, so it should be fine, unless olive oil in general can't be used, but I've never heard that, a quick Google should confirm 😊
Square sausage should only be eaten in a Scottish crispy roll , not in a soft flimsy muffin ! Option of ketchup or brown sauce. Thanks for the video, Gareth. Spot on as usual. Next time in Farmfoods ( a Scottish company by the way ), look for a bridie. It’s like a pasty but more flavoursome !
I saw some online in Iceland, not the same brand but similar, Richmond have brought something out now called a sausage Pattie they are in Sainsburys and Morrison's not tried them though 😊
Instead of bacon try fish fingers its amazing my husband and I aways have them as a anniversary treat for the past 33 years tomato sauce is a must with them.
im from Manchester and my mum used to always get square sausage from Kwik Save as a kid. Had no idea it was Scottish til a few years back. Love the stuff but it doesnt seem easy to find.
I like to use a manual oil spray bottle with regular cooking oil in it much cheaper than the aerosol cans with no extra E number crap. We like to make our own sausage meat so we know what goes into it and can make whatever flavour we want. Plenty of good recipes for flavoured sausage on youtube to try, last year we invested in a small smoker to make our own smoked cured meats which has been fantastic. The salt level i suspect is becauce it is ment to be eaten in a bun or between slices of bread doused in sauce.
I'm sure locally where l live years ago burger vans used to do them ... with fried onions and a bit tomato ketchup... lovely . One of them foods where the cheaper the better ... the patties were lovely and crispy around the edge
Ive tried the frozen n didnt think.much of it from farmfoods...its beautiful fresh from butchers,n different butchers got different spices they add its beautiful..thanks for the vid

Thanks for the tips!
I saw some online in Iceland, not the same brand but similar, Richmond have brought something out now called a sausage Pattie they are in Sainsburys and Morrison's not tried them though 😊
Cheers Sally
Another great review and video.👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it
Instead of bacon try fish fingers its amazing my husband and I aways have them as a anniversary treat for the past 33 years tomato sauce is a must with them.
Oh nice one will have too cheers yummy 😋
well done for doing your own thing and not falling fowl to the big boys . oh and there going on the shop list
Cheers pal
im from Manchester and my mum used to always get square sausage from Kwik Save as a kid. Had no idea it was Scottish til a few years back. Love the stuff but it doesnt seem easy to find.
Cheers Kelger
Square Sausage is the best, nothing beats a Roll with a good Square Sausage, Tattie Scone, and some Stornoway Black Pudding with some broon sauce.
Cheers pal 👍
As I haven't been to farm foods for a long time. But I normally use Lorne available at Iceland. Although for me. I prefer the Iceland sausage patties
Got to try steak slice sausage out the butchers with Tattie scone on a crispy roll with brown sauce ..top notch
