Hi Gareth I've tried ham but with more oil to create more 'dip'. In deepest lancashire we call them th'oven bottom cakes. Try a ninja frying pan with lid they can cook anything. Also a bacon iron works by flattening the ham/bacon so it's nice and crispy. Keep up the good work. 👍 margarita. 😊
Hey BFG, as you know sometimes a Gammon Steak can be a bit on the salty side, & not necessarily very tender, so, if you fancy a change, buy a gammon joint, boil as normal with peppercorns, sage, etc, then carve off thin slices for salads/sarnies as normal, BUT, if you like you can cut a THICK slice then pop it into a pan virtually dry fry it nice with egg & pineapple, it will soo tender and not salty. Also saves any waste.
Hey Devon Steve!!!!! This is true!!!!! When I have meats with more salt in them, for example, ham joint, I boil/ simmer the slices in water, removes some of the salt, delicous 😋 😋 👌 👍
I bought a meat slicer. Cooked 2 x beef joints and 2 x pork shoulder joints in one go to save cooking cost. Let them cool and sliced & vacuum packed it all. Sunday dinner is a simple task of taking out a pack and defrosting it before cooking in onions & gravy. Also bought a cheap gammon joint and sliced it up. Got about 9 gammon slices for around £5.
Yeah, done this before and it does make a tasty sarnie/roll/cob or whatever folk call them in their neck of the woods! lol First experienced this back in the 70's when our ship was in Jacksonville. There was a snack bar next to the PX (their version of NAFFI) and they did ham and egg muffins. They did all their cooking on a flat griddle and used those square ham slices. Those muffins were to die for and so I now use any left over ham just like you've done there. Another thing for you to try using is Serrano ham. You'll get it in most supermarkets (incl ALDI) and it usually has a quite a long shelf life, and it crisps up beautifully 😋
When I was a kid we used to have 'PEK' (Not spam) cut thin and grilled or fried. It goes crispy like bacon. Goes well with a fried egg and brown sauce.
Yep, I discovered ham frying just recently, for pasta, pizza toppings and toasties. It is good. But It has to be brown slippage sauce for me...unless it's Stokes! Cheers Gareth! It's nice to share ideas on here.
Yep I’ve fried sliced ham off before now and had it with egg and chips. Also if you buy a reduced pack of roast beef slices, make a cheats roast dinner out of it. Thanks for the video Gareth, glad you enjoyed your butty 😊
Yep I do the sliced beef quick roast dinner..bit off mash some Yorkys and peas...Best way is cook a whole joint beef let it cool n carve it nice n thin into 1 meal portions n freeze em then can have a dinner when you want can even do roast potatoes just chop them super small can cook in half hour then just simmer your beef slices in your gravy jobs a gooden can get like 10 medium sized roast dinners from a joint if u want...cheers

I always do this when making a ham and cheese toastie. Takes it to the next level mate honestly 👌🏻. I also make cheese crisps by melting a pinch of “4 cheese blend” in the pan while the toastie is cooling down a little. Cracking little lunch and snack 👨🏻🍳🍻
Speaking of your frying pan brings back memories of my granny and granda who were Irish, from Northern Ireland and my granda loved his frying pan. Every day he and my granny would have a fry up of bacon, Irish sausages, eggs, fried tomato, black pudding, fried soda bread, Irish potato bread, fried in lard and beans. The pan was never ever cleaned, any juices were left over for the next days fry up and so on. Apparently it's an old Irish tradition never to clean the pan as it added a rich flavour to the fry up. Happy days 😊
Oh dear! Shaved, not sliced and way too thin. Thick, very thick, makes a ham steak or in USA, breakfast ham. Yes, I got this far because Gareth is an OK guy.. Cheers Gaz. 🙏🇦🇺
What a coincidence! An hour ago I bought the same Lancashire oven bottom muffins. Plan is to make my own version of McDonald's Sausage and Egg McMuffin, using one of these Lancashire muffins as an alternative to Warburtons English muffins. But why are these Lancashire ones called muffins? They're just burger buns, really. I often fry ham for egg on ham on toast. In Germany it's called a Strammer Max. Also try frying serrano ham or prosciutto.
Had a bacon and egg myself this morning, not supposed to do (salt/saturates) but I allow myself an occasional cheat. I love fried fatty bacon then tin chopped tomatoes added to the pan to soak up all that flavour, not supposed to have tomatoes either but I am not dying a monk chewing rice. Muffins over here in Yorkshire the basic bread bun is a teacake but in Lancashire a teacake has currants, In Yorkshire that is a current teacake as apposed to a plain teacake. And in Coppull Lancashire a mouse is a moggy 😂.
I often use fried ham in an omelette Works just as good as bacon. And as you suggested, drop some cubes of cheese in before adding the eggs. Delicious!
This is not uncommon Gareth. Fried or grilled ham It's always been a favourite with the Christmas Ham for me. Cut off chunks and toss them in the pan or on the bbq to make proper 'Hamburgers' You must try it with lettuce, tomato, cheese and mayo. They add the moisture back to the ham. Nice experimentation today Gareth. Cheers 👍🤤😀
I like the idea frying thin sliced ham Never tried it never thought about it really but an interesting alternative to bacon Maybe i would prefer the ham fried making it a different texture Add an egg sounds good I like brown sauce on a bacon butty.
You can't beat them Asda frying pans. I got 1 last year and best money I've spent on them. It does look nice. I've soem ham in now and I'll have it for tea as a treat. What a nice idea to try this out. Never thought of trying this till now. PS. You must butter them buns. PPS. Brown sauce.
A good idea using the ham if you are out of bacon. 👍👍. It all looked OK, but you can't beat a few slices of nice fatty bacon in a sarnie. I usually fry mine in butter and then just add a couple of slices of bread to the pan and let just one side soak up the bacon flavour and butter. Like I said before, a good idea 🤔. A better idea though, is not to run out of bacon mate 🥴🥴🥓🥓. Keep up the good work.
Top tip for saving money. I don't buy packet ham anymore I just bought a food slicer and now I buy joints of pork/gammon and beef and cook and slice it works out alot cheaper and also tastes much better.
Good idea that Gareth..looks proper nice…definitely a good idea throwing that bun in there and soaking up all that goodness…like you said, would have been cracking 😅with an egg too…Have you ever had cheese in a dish? Crumbly Lancashire cheese in a shallow dish, grilled till crisp with some bread and butter…simple, but classic…bit like grilled Camembert..any way love the vids..cheers Rog
Yes, I would prefer bacon, too. The one thing I noticed was that there is very minimal spatter than there is with real bacon. It did look good, though. A fried egg also would go down a treat along with a slice or two of cedar cheese.
I've tried this before and it is quite nice.. personally I prefer a thicker cut of ham to stop it drying out too much. I've actually got some smoked gammon steaks for my lunch at work today. Bit of brown sauce and I'm winning!
Hi Gareth , a tip for you a lot of my friends & myself have found that using those oil sprays especially the Fry Lite brand ruin frying pans after a while so ditch the oil x
It's because the smoke point is too low. At proper frying temperature it's already burning and damaging the coating. Either dry fry or use oils with a decent smoke point.
Hey, yes i have a few times. nice alternative as you say, i also get the sliced cumberland sausage from the chilled section in asda and tesco, its ready to eat but its better fried. could be a good comparison video....

Prosciutto is great as a bacon alternative - an unopened pack keeps for ages in the fridge too. I have fried it and oven baked it, either works. Chorizo I like sliced and fried gently to release the oils and crusty bread to mop it all up with.
YES!!!! WOW!!!!! the best way to fry and eat ham. 😁 Bacon sarnies on another level. try it with garlic mayo sauce. and also . . . try out making kebabs using fried ham. 😋

Chorizo I like sliced and fried gently to release the oils and crusty bread to mop it all up with.
Now THAT is good!
That looked dryer than a Nuns….well you get the drift😂😀
🤣
Great vlog but was barrow once part of Lancashire.?
