Before she died in a Durban Nursing Home, my Great Aunt always used to send us a few packets of Eet Som Mors and they tasted a lot better than yours.
It seems like you got a really old box of snacks from South Africa. The chalk type of flavour is what happens when chocolates are old as they do not look like the ones if i were to open them now(no chalk flavour or appearance). Plus the Ouma rusk has to be eaten after being dipped in Tea or Coffee. The Eet-sum-mor biscuits also looked old.
I imagine there's probably a bunch of heat and pressure changes (that commercial food shipping can better avoid) that don't do great things to them either.
"Lekker"!! Tennis biscuits are ELITE. Now find a recipe for peppermint crisp tart, for your tennis biscuits and peppermint crisp and taste a true South African favourite 🇿🇦
Barry & Ashens... As a South African I can honestly say that most of the snacks you guys ate might have expired... Which explainst the chalky and wood taste... You guys need to come to the source and try them fresh
One of my favourite thing to do in other countries is try their snacks. I found out years ago that a lot of confectioneries are formulated for the climate theyre in. North european chocolate has tons of milk so it would melt and sour in hot weather! So a flake in ireland and the uk tastes completely different to australian, american or south african cadbury!
You will need to come try these snacks in South-Africa seems like you got a bad batch 😅🇿🇦 and the full size packs of bakers is way better than the mini’s anyway 😂
Yummy yummy for my non south African tummy! ( and Lekker, means 'oeh NICE!') ( haha, commented this before your 'nice', totally different meaning though 😂)
Hi, I'm from South Africa. Cadbury's flake is wonderful, you must let it almost resolve in your mouth. Don't chew the chocolate Rusks need a cup of tea to dunk it in. I think the white chocolate is very sweet The peppermint crisp we use to make a fridge tart. Delicious
Ashens Cheers from South Africa mate. We met at a Norwich fest where you did a talk. Happy to see you indulging in our cuisine PS. You should have the rusk with coffee LEKKER!
Willson toffees put it in back pocket to warm up not so hard to chew then... from south africa. Peppermint tart with the tennis biscits and peppermint crisp❤🎉
I wonder if everything is powdery because it’s made for a much hotter climate than the Uk, so because it’s colder than it’s normally meant to be it’s changed the consistency
Peppermint crisps are the greatest. I can't believe you've never heard of them before. In Australia we crush them in the packet and then scatter the shards on top of a pavlova. Fantastic!
I remember you doing a Finnish treats taste test with your mom a decade ago. Would love to see one with ashens! I could even be willing to gather and send some if you guys would be up for it :)
There's a wafer/chocolate biscuit here called a tim tam that people do that with drinking hot coffee or tea. They almost collapse and you then eat them
"Marie" ("Maria", "Marietta", "Mariebon") biscuits are literally British "rich tea" biscuits. The "named brand" was released in 1874 in British Empire and Russian Empire in celebration of princess Maria Romanova's (Emperor Alexander II only daughter) engagement to prince Alfred (Queen Victoria's second son).
Their chocolate has to survive higher temperatures than ours, so will contain things like paraffin wax and other ingredients to make it more shelf stable and less likely to melt at room temperature. Thus making it more soapy/chalky/flavourless. There used to be a mint cracknel bar in the UK I think in the 70s/80s and it wasn't like that one in the video. It was more like a mint flavoured dime bar, or daim or whatever it's called now, with a slightly green toffee with chocolate around it.
No, our chocolate is just normal chocolate. The chalkiness seen in this video is not normal and most likely due to age/storage conditions during shipping. We do have higher temperatures, but generally ambient temp in a kitchen cupboard won't melt chocolate. I've dealt with many a melty chocolate bar though in the peak of summer but fridges exist to cool it down a bit.
Its common to buy an ice cream with a flake in it from the ice cream vans. Dipped flakes are better on their own and dont mess all over the place 😂 Its like a twirl. -the bakers man. We have an ad that goes ' who can bake a biscuit specially for you? The bakers man can' (bakers limited is the company name) Do not eat rusk without dunking it in tea/coffee! One of the best ways to enjoy a peppermint crisp, is to cut off both ends just slightly and use it as a “straw” to drink your favourite milk drink. Mine was vanilla milkshake- boom!! You just levelled-up your shake and you have a chocolate to devour too. You’re welcome 😉
We used to have the Mint crisp here in the UK. I am 57 and it was a childhood treat. It’s a shame that they have stopped making so many good sweets. Great memories.
Love the video Barry! If you ever spot Mrs Ball's chutney make sure to get a bottle - it's the one South African thing I cant bbq without! (Tesco sometimes stocks it)
Tennis biscuits as well as Marie biscuits are a very popular biscuit options we use for a crust for pies or tarts and desserts. Also, rusks are meant to be with a cup of tea or coffee :)
11:17, we used to have those in Australia, not sure if we still do, haven't looked for them. used to like them as a kid in the 80s until I had a different peppermint flavoured thing here that triggered a severe asthma attack & then I couldn't eat anything peppermint for about 20 years.
I'm also from PE, but living in Dubai. I think something went wrong with the items in this box, because those snacks are usually tops. Unless quality's gone down since I last had some. Is the Cadbury factory still going in PE?
Oh and it's mini biscuits because it's like a snack pack, we actually have the big ones in store. Sometime, not everyone, but some people, put some good margerine like Stork or Flora inbetween 2 Marie biscuits and then dunk it in milk coffee, but you need to be quick, it dissolves quickly and can fall into your coffee. 😅
I used to manage a pub/ restaurant that was owned by a South African. It had a few South African dishes on the menu like bunny chow, Potjieko and mint crisp dessert. It got so many comments and the bunny chow confused people thinking it was bunny inside. The mint crisps were so hard to find and so the dish was often not available and people would be so upset!

It was originally made in the UK in the 1950s/60s, and then production was stopped because it was not popular. Then, it was picked up by Cadbury down under. Quite a few chocolate bars went the same way. Cadbury's Tiffin is now only available in shops that sell food from the Republic of Ireland, where it's still made. Cost's around £1 mores than it does in Ireland.
As a South African, you must have rusks with coffee - dunk/dip for 5 to 10 seconds (until soaked through, but without falling apart in your coffee) it’s the only way to have rusks
Rich Tea (with a bit of vanilla) are called Marie / Maria / Marietta, etc., pretty much everywhere outside Great Britain. The strangest part is they were invented (and named) in England.
I do think the choccies might have not survived the trip well (or the shop didn't store them properly) the Jelly Tot bar is also hit or miss quality wise (also just a sugar overload usually), peppermint crisp is ace especially if you can find enough to make a peppermint crisp tart :) The original flavour toffee I feel is like a marmite thing 50/50 love it or hate it, personally not a fan of it either (the cola flavour ones etc are quite nice, not sure if Wilson toffees and those Champion ones are the same tbh never thought about it much). Really really surprised that you didn't know what a rusk is, since it goes well dipped in coffee and tea I had this stereotypical idea that the Brits would have it as a staple.
