This was an excellent video when I watched it. Clear and comprehensive. I made notes. And then in DuoLingo, I saw this question: "I bought a good coat for winter." and thought: Hah! I'll apply those snazzy new rules I learned! So: POR is for motive/because. OK, well I bought the coat because of winter. But PARA is for Purpose - well - could be that too. Try another one: PARA is for Towards - towards winter? In time for winter? Seems OK. POR is for through - through winter seems to work too . Another one: PARA is for limit of time period - I bought it before winter starts. Seems to work. POR is for DURING. During winter seems to work. So - they all seem to apply in all cases. I have these rules, but - in real examples - they seem to be useless. I know I'm wrong, obviously - you're native Spanish speakers. But I can't see how I'm mis-applying your rules here. Help on old fellow out??

I'll gladly help you out with this one! Let me start of by saying you're doing an amazing job, and this kind of thinking is what you need to skyrocket your Spanish, I'm so proud of you! So keep it going! What I can see if that you're maybe analysing it too much. In this particular case 'for' here is for 'purpose'. And also we use 'por' for periods of time, por ejemplo: viajé a Barcelona por 2 semanas (I travelled to Barcelona for 2 weeks) and 'para' to talk about specific holidays, special occasions and seasons such as Navidad, Día de acción de gracias, cumpleaños, seasons of the year, other seasons (end of soccer season) etc. Por ejemplo: Compré un pavo para el día de acción de gracias (I bought a turkey for Thanksgiving). Iré a España para Navidad (I'll go to Spain for Christmas). Alquilamos una casa para el verano (We hired a house for the summer). Me compré zapatillas nuevas para la final de fútbol (I bought new shoes for the soccer finals). The purpose of the coat is to be worn in cold weather in winter, and also winter is a season. So, going back to your original example, the correct answer would be: Compré un abrigo para el invierno. I hope this explanations helps!

That was THE most useful video about Por and Para! Que genial! What I noticed is that verbs like the preposition 'para' more than 'por'. You normally wouldn't say 'las gafas son por leer' but instead you should say 'las gafas son para leer'. When you want to use 'por' for verbs, it would give a different meaning however useful. Por ejemplo, 'Las gafas estan usadas al leer las cartas de tus abuelos.' Here, I use the different preposition 'a' instead of 'por' to express the tempo 'The glasses are used when reading letters of your grandparents.' Again, you don't use 'por' for verbs. Initially, 'por' and 'para' was so hard to distinguish for a Spanish learner like myself.

This por vs para question has confounded many of my native Spanish speaking friends here in Andalucia, so take heart my fellow native English speakers. There is one bit of your video that I don't agree with though. Apologies if it has been covered earlier, but I can't realistically scroll back through 6 years of comments!. it is the first question in the mini test . Further apologies , like some of your other fans I haven't worked out how to get the accents on letters yet! Compre este libro para mi Mama. We don't have enough context to decide between por or para here. Why? Because it is possible I went to the shop to buy the book because my Mum couldn't go herself. So I have acted as her representative in buying the book for her, requires "por". The guidelines about using por for pronouns and para for actions / verbs could easily have persuaded most people this should be "por". It is a very incomplete sentence to come to the conclusion "para". We have to surmise, for example, Lo compre para darselo de regalo, u otro ejemplo, para sorprenderla! Gracias de toda manera.

One little suggestion: although having given my email address for receiving "complete Por vs Para exercise and workbook" as promised in the video I instead received a pdf with the "200 most commonly used verbs in Spanish" which is not relevant. Thanks for this. I found it very helpful. I realise you can't please everyone, but here's a data point for you. I am just a month into my path to Spanish fluency and I like a tranquil learning experience to combat the stress of being eternally ignorant. I see why you present the mateial in both languages but for me, it doubles the length and gives me far too much to think about. I just want the answers - and my native language works far better for that. For others your approach is, I guess preferable, as you're increasing emmersion and adding a little stretch to their capabilities. fair enough. But - as I said - now you ave another data point. Anyway, thanks so much for all you're doing for Spanish learning. You are both obviously exceptional teachers and wonderful people.

Ambos ejemplos son correctos 'esta fiesta es por su cumpleaños' (this party is because of his/her birthday. The reason for this party is celebrating his/her birthday). 'Esta fiesta es para su cumpleaños' (the purpose of this party is to celebrate his/her birthday). En estos ejemplos en particular que has usado no hay mucha diferencia entre razón y propósito. 'El regalo es por ella' (the present is because of her) no es del todo correcto o no tiene mucho sentido sin un poco más de contexto. 'El regalo es para ella' (here we have a recipient - the present is for her).
Hola Spanish yes, I enjoyed the class. I learned today that esta and está are very different. They are unrelated to each other. One is a noun and the other is a verb. I would like a video on that because I think I have scrapped the surface. Estas and estás are very different as well. Muy confundido
Wanted to mention that in the end on the "second page" it was not clear to me why those prepositions were used. I suppose I just didn't know how those verbs work exactly.

A very good lesson! I had been struggling with this. One little suggestion: although having given my email address for receiving "complete Por vs Para exercise and workbook" as promised in the video I instead received a pdf with the "200 most commonly used verbs in Spanish" which is not relevant. It would therefore be better if just a summary with a few exercises is given in the description section of this video. Best, Peter

Thanks for this. I found it very helpful. I realise you can't please everyone, but here's a data point for you. I am just a month into my path to Spanish fluency and I like a tranquil learning experience to combat the stress of being eternally ignorant. I see why you present the mateial in both languages but for me, it doubles the length and gives me far too much to think about. I just want the answers - and my native language works far better for that. For others your approach is, I guess preferable, as you're increasing emmersion and adding a little stretch to their capabilities. fair enough. But - as I said - now you ave another data point. Anyway, thanks so much for all you're doing for Spanish learning. You are both obviously exceptional teachers and wonderful people.

i thought " fue" is for objects. Why is it that fue is used in the example 2 and 3 at 11:00?

why "hoy trabaje por sara" was translated as Today I worked for sarah not instead of sarah?
Significa lo mismo. La idea es que en 'trabajé por Sara' Significa que Sara no fue a trabajar ese día y tú la reemplazaste, y no que trabajaste para ella (ella siendo tu jefa en este caso)

No entiendo por qué es “esta fiesta es por su cumpleaños”, en lugar de “para su cumpleaños”. En qué se diferencia esto del otro ejemplo “el regalo es para ella “?? Gracias!
Ambos ejemplos son correctos 'esta fiesta es por su cumpleaños' (this party is because of his/her birthday. The reason for this party is celebrating his/her birthday). 'Esta fiesta es para su cumpleaños' (the purpose of this party is to celebrate his/her birthday). En estos ejemplos en particular que has usado no hay mucha diferencia entre razón y propósito.
'El regalo es por ella' (the present is because of her) no es del todo correcto o no tiene mucho sentido sin un poco más de contexto. 'El regalo es para ella' (here we have a recipient - the present is for her).
The birthday is not receiving a party it is the REASON for the party.

Hola Spanish yes, I enjoyed the class. I learned today that esta and está are very different. They are unrelated to each other. One is a noun and the other is a verb. I would like a video on that because I think I have scrapped the surface. Estas and estás are very different as well. Muy confundido
