I never played or even looked into the original Chrono Trigger, but picked it up for the DS when it was later released for it. *Game's a fucking masterpiece!* I almost cried several times, just admiring the artwork and soundtrack.
As much as I loved the DS remake simply because it's CT, I still think you've done yourself a disservice by not playing the original SNES version the way it was meant to he experienced in the first place. But either way I'm glad you played it regardless. Masterpiece of a game 👍

I still play Chrono Trigger now and have finished it probably 300 times or more. It never gets old and is that awesome and the soundtrack is equally awesome. It's timeless.
@@IntegrityWin Nah, if he had said 500 times, I might be worried... but 300? I think he's only murdered a Nu or two. But he probably gets off to killing Magus, and that's not cool.
I played this game twice, when I was 13 and last year (then 27) and everything holds up perfectly and there are many thing you get if you are older (it's now all "yay adventure!" as I originally thought). Amazing, amazing game.
For about 20 years now Corridors of Time is my alarm tone. And I still can never get enough of it. Such a superb song on an absolutely stellar soundtrack.
Shining Force & Shining Force II for Sega Genesis did not have graphics/backgrounds and battle animations like this.... I wish it did, I was a Genesis kid. SNES had superior sound and graphics, this coming from a die hard Sega Fanboy. I love all the systems and keep a special place in my heart for Sega Genesis and turn based rpg's.... but I LOVE collecting and playing now in 2021 for SNES, all the old titles I used to play at my friends houses that had SNES consoles. Just bought Chrono Trigger CIB 2021 for SNES. 😎 Everyone else buying PS5 games. I'm buying Chrono Trigger for SNES.
I'm not an RPG person (turn based isn't my jam) but I recognize the greatness of Chrono Trigger. It's the Super Nintendo fully realized, like the game they were building up to make from the beginning
yeah it was way ahead of it's time. the combat system in chrono cross feels so bland and boring compared to trigger. and visually trigger still amazes me more thsn many modern games. the modern games are technically better visually, but a lot of them just look boring and dull, with trigger i'm constantly looking at the screen in awe and never find it boring to look at.
I got this on release date and it screamed "masterpiece" from the first moment, even before it got hyped to death. SquareSoft made some gorgeous polished games on the SNES. The music felt like it should've come off a CD, and I bought the SNES stereo adapter just for this game. I hated the PS1 era - they traded gorgeous 2D pixel art for distorted grainy pre-rendered crap, and it felt like we'd stepped back a generation. SNES was Square's peak, and arguably the high water mark for JRPGs.
@@Kongajinken the playstation is a fifth gen console. the NES was a third gen, and the SNES fourth, the first console gen was your pong consoles, followed by the second gen, which was atari 2600 era systems. only then do we hit the NES.
@@james441 I actually remember really liking Mario RPG and its graphics. For whatever reason though, the prerendered graphics in FF7 looked like crap to me. I also hated the blocky characters, and the fact that your character got smaller as you moved into the distance instead of the screen actually scrolling.
This is the perfect game. I can play it over and over and never get bored. I've probably beaten it over 30 times and I still love making fun team combos and trying new things. I remember a few years back I played the whole game in one sitting because I couldn't stop playing it. The music, characters, combat, story, everything is leaps and bounds above any other RPG of the era or since. It has been my #1 game since I was a kid and will always be. Great video. :)
Just found this channel and I love it immediately. I never could afford a system growing up, but this is a great way to learn about the classics and what I should play now. Thanks!
I'm actually playing this game right now for the first time.... As a side note, I had a super nintendo as a kid, with some great and memorable games, but this was one that I only heard about, but never got to play.... the game has exceeded my expectations in every way thus far, and as I continue playing it, I am constantly thinking to myself what it must have felt like to play this game when it had first come out in 1995....
Alexei Gladyshev Dude I'm so happy you get to experience it! Better late than never, not NEARLY enough people get to play this game. Chrono Trigger is my favorite jrpg, maybe even favorite game of all time. I always knew I was lucky to have that game, especially when I'd see it listed second hand for like $60+ haha. Growing up on this game set the bar EXTREMELY high for me as far as storytelling goes.
It was fantastic to play it back then! Even at $74.99 price tag at Toys R US (which was pretty expensive for a game back then, even today I suppose), it was well worth it. The music was so astounding to me that I recorded it on my micro cassette player to listen to on the bus ride to school. I'm curious, as a first time player such as yourself, what was your favorite part?
I'm a first time player myself and I'd have to say Magus' Castle leading up to his battle and the Sunken Palace are my favorite parts. Maybe not story wise, but the tone set by the music made it very memorable for me. I'm at the part where you have to find Chrono and I haven't gotten back to it for like two months now. I'll get back to it soon once I get my life together. Haha.
+stucazzo2000 i actually got my wife to play it recently, and since she had never played it, watching her was almost like playing it for the first time.
SoulRoh I'm not sure if there is. CT gave me so many firsts; Being able to see equipment change on your character, cooperative skill attacks and a truly Amazing soundtrack just to name a few. The only game that had as much impact on me was Diablo II, but for many different reasons.
I´m really looking hard these days too find good ones. Have you ever tried Alundra (1)? It´s for PSX but i liked the style because of my snes experience i think. it´s really awesome. This is one game that really ruined me - hard to beat.
I'm surprised no one mentioned another thing that made Chrono Trigger great on top of the epic gameplay, pacing, and the tech system - much of the game's artwork, from the characters, enemies, to the vehicles, was designed by none other than Akira Toriyama.
@@MrEli768 yeah, Akira worked with squaresoft at the time, making the slime models and other stuff like that. I'm wondering, does he still make the dragon quest artwork, or does square enix just take his old designs?
Just bought the DS remake because of your review. This is such a great channel that you have here. I'm a long time follower that really appreciates your outlook.
SNES drunk hey how goes it I just want to let you know I really really enjoy your Channel...And I always refer back to your channel for references before I buy something for my SNES collection...I wanted to ask you how do you feel about Reproduction Carts/Homebrews/Multi-carts and ROM hacks...? looking forward to your response
Jeff Smith I'm basically doing the same thing based on his video as we speak I'm negotiating a deal for this game hopefully I'll buy it before the day ends and get it before the week is over...But his videos are very great and informative and aren't too long he gives a lot of information and a nice Bitesize chunk with gameplay #Dopeness
SNES version is the best because it was the original incarnation. Don't get me wrong. I played the DS version with the extra features and liked it, but the classic has better charm.
Personally I'd have to disagree with you. When it comes to the best version of Chrono Trigger, the DS version will always win out for me. I love all the extra content and how it doesn't even feel tacked-on like a lot of other Square remake's content does, the portable factor works extremely well with the game's pick-up-and-play nature (I'd say that Chrono Trigger can be picked up and played unlike a lot of RPGs. Not a flaw with most RPGs, it's just a design choice that molds well with CT specifically), and while I'm usually a huge fan of Ted Woolsey's work as a translator, Chrono Trigger was some of his weakest work in my opinion, and the DS translation carries a bit more emotion, at least in my opinion. The SNES game is still masterful, but the DS version is one step away from Nirvana. Only flaw with the DS version is the resolution, slightly smaller than the original (hint hint Square, I'd LOVE to see a remake on PS4 and Switch, don't update graphics or any shit, just a nice port of the DS version).
i remember the 1st time i played chrono trigger since 2001(i used to own the SNES version). I downloded the game in my Phone (Snes version). Just to play between college classes. One day my teacher didnt show up(5pm) i started playing waiting for my next class(7pm). The next time i check my clock...IT WAS 10:20PM!. Men i love that game back in the day and i love it even more now
This has been my favorite game of all time for 26 years. It's the only video game I store in my safe. Also, I had read back in the day in Nintendo Power that Magus as 6,666 HP. He was so intimidating to my adolescent self that I stopped playing for a week until I mustered up the courage to fight him. That's perhaps the most epic boss music ever.
This game is a masterpiece. The only RPG I like better than it is FFVI. I still remember in 1995 my neighbor got CT before I did, and when we first turned it on, seeing the pendulum swinging back and forth as we watched the opening and that music...I just knew we were in for something epic! BTW Zelda 2 was the first game I am aware of that used the New Game+ feature
The Chrono games are masterful RPG games. I hope one day to see a third game in the series developed by the same folk who made the original. Chrono Trigger was simply a masterpiece. A work of art.
This is by far the best RPG for the SNES. They hit the head on the nail with this one.. great story, cool special effects for its time, great music, awesome battle system.. everything just great! My only complaint is larger world maps would've been nice.
Maybe I'm too used to games hand-holding me / being too linear, but I've had a couple of times where it was hard for me to figure out where to go. Anything else, perfect. The game truly is a masterpiece.
I ashamadly missed this as was a Megadrive/Genesis kid. Started playing it the other day (23 years later) and its so so good, hooked me straight away. I can tell sleepless nights await me :)
Was my 1st real experience with an RPG. I was in middle school and had borrowed a friends SNES and another friends Chrono Trigger. Xmas vacation i played it almost nonstop, even falling asleep and then waking up to play again! Kicked ass! Also, a work of art to say the least!
I remember playing this game as a kid. The scene when you fight the mechanical dragon at the end of prison just blew my mind. In my memories it was the coolest thing ever, and I confess I got a little disappointed when I replayed it a couple months ago. But this is the thing with the pixel art style, it ages a lot better than the low poli graphics of the ps one. I can't replay any of those games because they just look so old and ugly, but snes games are still cute and replayable.
For real! When I saw the miserable people of 12kBC and found this first teleporter stones, I was NOT expecting to see this highly advanced civilization up there, it literally blew my mind. And knowing that this kingdom wasn't around anymore made you realize that something would be going terribly wrong any time soon. But that ark was the best Cronotrigger had to offer.
It's a game i never get tired of playing.I complete it every time, meaning i do every single thing there is to do in it.In the Final Fantasy VI vs Chrono trigger topic(both are tied for favorite for me),Chrono's got the smoother gameplay and FF VI has the deeper, stronger story. One of my favorite tracks in the game, besides Corridor of Time,is Desolated World(future overworld theme).Although to be fair,i love almost every single tune just as much.New Game+ isn't the only thing that adds replay value. There's enough characters in it to change your team every time. It's definitely worthy of the praise it gets.
I'd never binged a UA-cam channel before I found yours - I've been listening (and almost kinda sorta watching) to it all week at work. I dusted off the RetroPi that I built for my son and am playing through this game now - and I'm a little pissed at younger me for having picked the Genesis. Thanks for all of this awesome content!
Im not a big gamer now a days, but crono trigger unlocked the door for a lot of other games afterwards. It is the best "choose your own adventure" game ever made. The options might seem limited now, but the story was so good that either you couldn't make a wrong decision or it didnt matter. No matter the outcome, it is satisfying. I love the fact they left Cronos back story kind of blank. It gives the player freedom of interpretation. The characters are all so different and yet not just filler to the story either. Music, top notch. And this was all on a "relic" of a console. Graphics are great but it's all about the story and progression, no matter what. Atleast imho.
momentum is a perfect way to describe the real hook of chrono trigger. even aside from story, just the momentum from boss to boss. unrivaled sprite-work and soundtrack too. the stars really aligned for this one
I am not even sure how I came across this game as a kid but I did. I remember thinking "this game is awesome and just special" but don't recall anyone else talking about it at the time. It was like a hidden gem to me because it was pre internet.
imo I think the game is a little overrated, but one thing that isn't overrated is the soundtrack. the music in this game is amazing and very memorable.
The most polished masterpiece on SNES? I'll say yeah. A beautiful tour de force. 2023 here & beyond, Chrono Trigger is a platinum standard for gaming when done right.
One unique and important feature you forgot to mention was the fact that most of the bosses had patterns in which to beat them. It wasn't always about just powerful attack combos and high experience points.
Okay, my brother always told me that we played Chrono Trigger when we were kids. Thing is, my memory sucks ass so I couldn't remember it too well. Well, a few years ago he bought a RetroBit and ordered a copy of Chrono Trigger through Amazon. When I finally got the chance to play, I immediately fell in love with the game. I poured so many hours into it and after all was said and done, this game became my favorite game ever made and I think I was able to appreciate it more because I was an adult. If I had played it as a kid, I wouldn't have remembered anything about it.
I like how the sorry starts off light-hearted and fun before getting more serious. It really helps lull you into this world and want to save it from Lavos. I also love how the guy who started out as the main villain is kind of the protagonist of the story and the main character is just there to witness it all. I mean, all the plot events cycle around and relate to this protagonist’s actions while the main character is just kind of there without feeling unnecessary (unlike in ff12). It’s a unique and surprisingly well told story.
Chronograph trigger did not aged a day. The presentation with visual and music is timeless. No over abundance of random encounters, not a generic medieval-focus story like almost eve rpg back in the day, no grinding required but is not overtly easy and have the best implementation of final fantasy active-time battle.
I always ended grinding the hunting range Nus before attempting Magus Castle. So much easier when all your characters have Aoe. One spot in Tyranno's Lair has infinite respawn of two easy groups that gives mad xp (even better than Black Omens).
I remember playing this on the DS, I seriously think there's a huge potential market and improvement in quality for this game with a remake. Considering how much storytelling is done through all the diverse setting and worlds, a 3D environment with amazing graphics would really make it a whimsical and immersive experience
Personally I would love to see a remake of chrono trigger, but I sincerely doubt we will ever see one since the people who worked on the game are constantly tied up in other projects, I mean Yasunori Mistuda and Nobuo Uematsu (Nobuo Uematsu does the music for the final fantasy series) did the soundtrack, Alira Toriyama did the artwork (and aside from anime, also does the artwork for the dragon quest series), Hironobu Sakaguchi did the gameplay (also does the final fantasy series), and Masato Kato did the story... but if Squenix ever plans to do a remake of this game, they'll need to do it sooner than later because those guys are getting up there in age
I've never been fan of RPGs, but I absolutely love this game when I played it. It was really memorable and I was so into it and spent almost three months trying to complete it (at least for one ending). After completing it, I tried other RPGs but I didn't like them. I hope to have time soon to play Chrono Trigger again.
For me, it's a 3 way tie between Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy III and Secret of Evermore. All 3 of these are phenomenal games that changed my life back in the day and getting me into RPG's. Great vid! Starting from the beginning of your vids. Cant wait to see what's next!
I recently started playing Chrono Trigger again for the first time since... well, the *first* time. I was just finishing high school when this hit the shelves, and had just started college when I finally got around to it. I'm happy to report that it's still one of the finest games I've ever played and is hands down my favorite JRPG ever (FFVI comes in second, but it isn't really close). Just a damn good game from start to finish.
Chrono Trigger is my 2nd favorite game of all-time, right before Final Fantasy III. It's a very close 2nd! I do think the best ever OST is from Final Fantasy Tactics though. Truly a phenomenal and memorable soundtrack. I'm tempted to start up a new game now.. been a long time since I played it. Always loved Luminaire, Crono's version of Ultima spell.
Here's something that you might not know. Soulblazer has two games that are somewhat sequals. Illusion if Gaia and Terranigma. I liked these two better than blazer. I liked secret of Mana. But check out secret of evermore. Another great game. I liked better than Mana at least. Breath of fire is good too. Trigger. Secret of evermore, and breath of fire are the game s I sitll have and really only had for the snes. Breath of fire is a great series. Fifth game is kinda odd. But it's not bad
CareyEve36 secret of mana is another masterpiece imo beautiful music multiplayer action rpg with weapon and spell /inventory menus or" wheels" fun and different
Chrono Trigger is not only my favorite RPG game & not only my favorite SNES game, but it's also one of my favorite games of all time. I love this game so much.
Chrono Trigger is a puzzling game for me. It's a really good game, and an enjoyable game but I don't love it as much as so many people claim to. I typically fall on the FF6 side of the fence in terms of what's the best SNES era rpg. I realize I didn't play Chrono Trigger when it was new. Growing up as a kid, it wasn't until FF7 that I really fell in love with the rpg genre. I didn't even know what the genre was until I went over to a friend's house who got a playstation before me and I saw him playing FF7. I sat over there for hours after school just watching him play the game lol. When I was young enough to be playing Super Nintendo, I was more into franchises like Super Mario or Megaman versus Final Fantasy. Super Mario RPG was my first taste of rpgs actually. Anyway, I went back and tried Final Fantasy 6(due to how many people said it was better than FF7) and I fell in love with it immediately. It challenged my idea that FF7 was the best Final Fantasy ever made almost immediately. I love the world, I love the characters, I love the villain, I love the combat system, I love everything about that game. About Chrono Trigger though...I never played it growing up and I finally got around to trying it a few years back. I committed to playing the whole game through and giving it 100% of my attention. Something about it just left me wanting more. It's a fun game with a refreshingly simple combat system. The time travel aspect of the game is my favorite part of it, genuinely loved it. But I think it was the characters, the villain and the settings that left me wanting more. I never connected with the characters like I did with FF6. Chrono was uninspiring to me, versus characters like Locke or Edgar or Sabin. I guess I just enjoy the Final Fantasy "formula" more. It's not a bad game. I've played through it 3 or 4 times. It's probably my 3rd favorite RPG on the SNES...but it's just not on the same level, FOR ME, as Final Fantasy 6. I truly wish I liked the game more than I do. After hearing about Chrono Trigger for so many years, I was actually extremely surprised to be left feeling underwhelmed once I was done with it. Although I will say, the OST was fantastic. Great, great stuff.
Just had played this a few months ago on the nintendo ds on my 3DS xl. Yes I did payed kind of a lot for it nowadays for a NDS version. And yes it was worth all my money and time on this game. What an incredible journey it is.
Bought this on DS today. Can't wait to play it on my 3DS... had a Genesis growing up & always wanted to play this. Finally going to get my hands on it!
Same. I’ve been using a pdf of the official players guide to help me get through it. I just don’t have the time these days to get lost trying to figure out what to do next or where to go when the game doesn’t give me a marker or clear indication.
I want to try this game, but I'm worried it might be too "advanced" for me haha. I mostly play Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, Mega-Man X, F-Zero, etc., but the only RPG I've ever played is Legend of Zelda. This game looks so interesting though. I would just hate to get it and be totally lost haha. Great reviews, man. Been digging this channel the past couple of days.
I used to think that it was only epic because I loved RPGs growing up while most people that I knew loved sports/fighting/mainstream games, but now I realize it is beloved by almost everyone who has played it because it simply is an epic game.
You might want to cover Tales of Phantasia for this channel. The game only released in Japan, but launched the franchise. It actually had a song in the opening and minor voice acting as well as looking pretty good graphically.
I played many good and awesome JRPgs(some may action orientied, but its about the overall impact), like FFIV, FFVI, Seiken Densetsu 3, Terranigma, Breath of fire 2 + 4, and Suikoden 1+2 as well as the infamous FF7. I would still consider Chrono Trigger the best JRPG of them all, while the others were really, really good. Imangine what could have been, if it was ever developed on a cd able console like the popular ps one? The devs could have added so much more!
It's nice to know that most games on the Snes absolutely live up to the hype (sadly some don't like SoM imho but whatever), but this one as well as FFVI completely do. Amazing games. Finally beat this a week ago and will definitely play again for all the endings. But damn Snesdrunk good thing I refused to watch this before beating it lol, you spoil all of Lavos's forms and that Magus joins your party, those were iconic surprises for me! (but hey at least you didn't spoil the Ocean Palace...lol) Anyway great review of this timeless classic.
Great vid! Man IMO Chrono Trigger is hands down the best game of all time IMO. It's basically perfect. I can't find the smallest thing wrong with it. Maybe some people might have something that isn't their personal preference but that's the closest you'll get. I know most say there is no such thing as a perfect game but I think CT is and I would never say that about any other game and I'm not sure another one will ever exist. I mean every single aspect of the game is the best on the SNES IMO. the music is just the best in gaming and every single track is implanted in my brain for eternity. The graphics are fucking gorgeous and clearly best on the SNES IMO. Especially the backgrounds in some areas I just can't even believe they are possible on the console. Not to mention the first and maybe best game to do new game plus and have 11 endings about a decade before alternate endings and new game+ were even cool. It is just so fucking polished and ahead of its time. I could write a book about how insanely great this game is.
Glad you explicitly mentioned the Kingdom of Zeal. That's where this game leapt from excellent to transcendant. I do kind of which they'd delved even deeper into Schala, Queen Zeal and Lavos though
In 2012, The VERY last ever game I ever completed on a legit SNES, with a legit controller, on a legit console, years after I first played SNES. I have replayed SNES many times after but I never want to finish any other SNES games on their legitimate cartridges. This game was special to me. Everything about it. I've tried finishing it again but I never could. Also, strangely, I found my complete copy, manual, pamphlets and for 4$ at a value village that had no clue what they had in their possession. Someone, or something wanted me to play that game.
"It’s got a great sense of humour, it’s never boring you truly never know what’s going to happen next. There’s a crazy amount of depth in both the story and the characters and with the items and the gear. There’s tonnes of replay value with all the endings and especially in the DS version with all the bonus content. The music is top notch with memorable themes created for each major character and for certain events in the game. All those factors add up to one thing; and that’s that Chrono Trigger is the best game the Super Nintendo has ever produced."
the most grossly underrated game by Squaresoft, and one of the greatest games ever made, was made by the same team who made Chrono Trigger... its called Super Mario RPG... it is soo fucking good, guys. if you loved chrono trigger and never played or heard of mario rpg, do yourself a favor and play it.
If I had one critique of this video, it's that he didn't emphasize how great the music was enough. But that's mainly because I'm a huge CT fan. Great video and great game.
just played it again after 30 years, and it is still just as good. better than anything ive played in the last 10 years. it is a masterpiece. the music hooks you so fast. the story does the same. its not as hard to follow as ff7, which i thought had an overly convoluted story line, even though its also a masterpiece. funny enough tho, both games were made by the exact same people...... one unsung gem from squaresoft that few people mention is Mario RPG. one of the top 3 best rpg's ever made. so fun. also made by the exact same people who made ff7 and chrono trigger.
I have owned this on snes, ps1, and ds. I enjoyed the DS version because they added extra endings, a boss fight that helps link trigger even more to cross, and the ps1 cut scenes. I got everything on the DS version so much so that I maxed out the stats of all the characters and got them to lvl max. It really is a dream game. The only part of the game I ever find annoying is getting up the windy mountain. Even that is a inconsequential personal gripe.
I thought it had more than 11 endings? Are we counting only the major ones? I know they added the new one in the DS version (which was really satifying, imo) but I seem to remember more than 11 in the original.
FF6,FF4,Chrono Trigger, the Mana series. Damn, the SNES had some of the greatest JRPGs ever made!
Idk why, but I cant get into Secret of Mana...

As much as I loved the DS remake simply because it's CT, I still think you've done yourself a disservice by not playing the original SNES version the way it was meant to he experienced in the first place. But either way I'm glad you played it regardless. Masterpiece of a game 👍
Nyrufa stop using profanity in the comments section before you get reported and have a real reason to cry.
Richard Myers what are the differences between the original and the DS port?
@@captainomoplata643 A new final boss, who is bull shit levels of ridiculous difficulty. My guys are all max level, and it's still powerful enough to wipe us out in seconds! There's also a few new side story dungeons to complete. :-)
You would cry you pansy.
I still play Chrono Trigger now and have finished it probably 300 times or more. It never gets old and is that awesome and the soundtrack is equally awesome. It's timeless.
300 times?
@@BalboaBaggins you've never played a game over and over? Back in the day u did ;)
@@UNIRockLIVE I could play StarFox64 over and over and over.
300x that's borderline serial killer territory.
One of the best remixes/remasters I've come across for CoT: ua-cam.com/video/bYoGFvn_fOk/v-deo.html
I wasn't into turn based RPG's until I played Chrono Trigger. Made a believer out of me
Mine too.
Me also
Shining Force & Shining Force II for Sega Genesis did not have graphics/backgrounds and battle animations like this....
@@Baneslayer shining force was awesome!
To be fair, atb is not really turnbased.
I'm not an RPG person (turn based isn't my jam) but I recognize the greatness of Chrono Trigger. It's the Super Nintendo fully realized, like the game they were building up to make from the beginning
Same, to be honest. I love what I've played of the game.
Extremely well put. Chrono Trigger will forever be my favorite game, and the Chrono series will always be my favorite series.
Its the perfect RPG. Everything about is so next level.
I totally agree.
yeah it was way ahead of it's time. the combat system in chrono cross feels so bland and boring compared to trigger. and visually trigger still amazes me more thsn many modern games. the modern games are technically better visually, but a lot of them just look boring and dull, with trigger i'm constantly looking at the screen in awe and never find it boring to look at.
No...it's the perfect game
I never played this game 😢
there's something deeply unsatisfying about the combat in chrono trigger. i cant quite put my finger on the reason why though.
^this
Yeah the 3rd console generation did not age well, and it did not look good at the time. Especially the load times.
@@Kongajinken the playstation is a fifth gen console. the NES was a third gen, and the SNES fourth, the first console gen was your pong consoles, followed by the second gen, which was atari 2600 era systems. only then do we hit the NES.
What are your thoughts on Mario rpg? With pre-rendered stuff etc
Thanks!
Thank you for watching
Skyler P.C. I'd start with this game.
I'm actually playing this game right now for the first time.... As a side note, I had a super nintendo as a kid, with some great and memorable games, but this was one that I only heard about, but never got to play.... the game has exceeded my expectations in every way thus far, and as I continue playing it, I am constantly thinking to myself what it must have felt like to play this game when it had first come out in 1995....
it was absolutely glorious. awesome though that you got to play in the end!
Haha.
Worry not, mate. This game is timeless. It was amazing back then. It's amazing now. You're not missing out on anything.
I wish I could play this game for the first time again. As with many SNES games. I'm also thinking FF6.
+stucazzo2000 i actually got my wife to play it recently, and since she had never played it, watching her was almost like playing it for the first time.
Terra Ranger I'm trying to get my niece to play Chrono Trigger and FF6. Hopefully I can get that same feeling. :)
good luck :D
I do that all the time. Play it from the beginning without the New Game Plus enhancements.
FF6 was great until about halfway through when the devs gave up on the game entirely and became lazy and tired
The best rpg ever made by the dream team.
How do I know more about this dream team?
This is the best game ever made
Just in my opinion

Bob Ert Guess that explains why he was such a pain in the ass to beat.

This game truly is a masterpiece. I can honestly say it's my favourite game.
This was the first RPG I ever played, and it totally ruined me.
DB Pooper Same.
thats bad. just playing it and i know it is good that i have played the mediocre ones before. is there a life after chrono trigger??
SoulRoh I'm not sure if there is. CT gave me so many firsts; Being able to see equipment change on your character, cooperative skill attacks and a truly Amazing soundtrack just to name a few. The only game that had as much impact on me was Diablo II, but for many different reasons.
I´m really looking hard these days too find good ones. Have you ever tried Alundra (1)? It´s for PSX but i liked the style because of my snes experience i think. it´s really awesome. This is one game that really ruined me - hard to beat.
1000x this
I'm surprised no one mentioned another thing that made Chrono Trigger great on top of the epic gameplay, pacing, and the tech system - much of the game's artwork, from the characters, enemies, to the vehicles, was designed by none other than Akira Toriyama.
so like dragon quest?
@@11th_defender51, well, he did all of the art work for that entire series also
@@MrEli768 yeah, Akira worked with squaresoft at the time, making the slime models and other stuff like that. I'm wondering, does he still make the dragon quest artwork, or does square enix just take his old designs?
I think the OP was meaning the artist that did the artwork for Dragon Ball.
@@nalathakdraconis8164 He did everything for DB, he's the sole creator.
Just bought the DS remake because of your review. This is such a great channel that you have here. I'm a long time follower that really appreciates your outlook.
+Jeff Smith Thanks Jeff
Men i love that game back in the day and i love it even more now
I've done that a few times

It is an amazing game. One of my favorite games of all time & one of the best RPGs out there.
I played this game at age 28 and boy was I missing out. It is truly a masterpiece in every way.
I hated Chrono Trigger. I only beat it about 25 times. Just a horrible game...

Red88Rex I still prefer FF VI, but CT is a masterpiece.
Better than FFIII for snes... Now I got to play this! I dont' know how this game got passed me. I played probably every game for the snes!
I must be on my own thinking CT is better than FFVI. But it is.
You're not, MistaFreeman.
I definitely liked Chrono Trigger more than FFIV.
I don't get how no one has recreated the magic that is Chrono Trigger. Absolutely perfect.

It is a singular masterpiece- but Lords of Kobol, the music still gets me. When Corridor of Time cued up in the video, I felt it before I heard it.
Kicked ass! Also, a work of art to say the least!
this is the best game rpg ever
You have to defeat 100 minions to reach MEEEEEEEEAH.
Chrono trigger is perfect. It almost approaches the post 10 level. its so fucking good.
DubiousGamingOnline 12 on a scale of 1 to 10.
Part of the SNES RPG Holy Trinity, along with FFII/IV and III/VI. I can't choose my favorite, they're all near-perfect for different reasons.
SNES holy trinity is chrono trigger, seiken 3/trials of mana, and IV. VI is overrated. devs just stopped caring halfway through.
J you are a hater lol
Hey man, Earthbound is also a great and unique RPG on SNES!
Thanks for watching
I could not sleep because the story and gamefeeling got better and better .. so many magic moments in this game!
I can still remember how my heart raced during those boss battles... I'd keep putting bosses in their place off, it was so stressful. Lol
I can't believe this was not put as one of the games on the Snes Classic... The true dream team game.
I bought a copy for the SNES this summer. Played it all the way through for the first time. It is now my benchmark for story-driven RPGs.
Yeah man grinding Nu for tech points. Hehe Ayla kicking some mad butt in there.
Amazing game. My favorite of all time!
The moonlight parade..once you have this ending you understand what a masterpiece the game is, I really wanted to live in this world at that moment
I'm sure it's been mentioned, but slash, flea, an ozzy as enemies? That's both hilarious and awesome
Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, SoulBlazer, Actraiser, and Earthbound are my top 5 favorite RPGs for the SNES.
I love this game so much.
i literally left my comment and left the video at 0:25. i grew up on it and its really that good. no explaination required. perfect game.
Great, great stuff.
when ill die, i will think of that game.
Just had played this a few months ago on the nintendo ds on my 3DS xl. Yes I did payed kind of a lot for it nowadays for a NDS version. And yes it was worth all my money and time on this game. What an incredible journey it is.
A hell of a classic with a dragon Ball feel artwork ,it's one of my favorite RPGs of all times on the snes next to final fantasy 2
Akira Toriyama from Dragonball was involved the in the artwork for Chrono Trigger.
Bought this on DS today. Can't wait to play it on my 3DS... had a Genesis growing up & always wanted to play this. Finally going to get my hands on it!
B Harry Did you play Phantasy Star IV on your Genesis? That was the best Sega Genesis RPG in my opinion.
2022 and both Chrono Trigger and this video still stands for the hype!
PS: I watched it several years ago, but UA-cam gladly recommended it again
This is my fave game of all time. I just want you to know that I have danced all through this video whilst cleaning my teeth
Trying to play through this on DS
It's great but sometimes I don't know where to go next
Ty Ty This game is very easy to pick up and play. The beginning eases you in to the gameplay. If you can handle Zelda, you can handle Chrono Trigger.
I forget... did you also mention the kickass soundtrack? It's also awesome!
The battle with Magus, that's an epic moment of my childhood I'll remember for ever. I totally felt like I was the hero in the story.
Do a comparison between the snes and ps1 versions of Chrono Trigger
I just got this a few months ago and LOVE it. Love so much that if I think I missed something I’ll start a new game and not be pissed off about it.
always loved how the box art has marle using fire and crono looking like a goblin lol
I spent about 80 euros (plus shipping) to buy the Retrode JUST so I could backup my Chrono Trigger cart save game. This game...man, this game.
I don't think there's a single thing you can say could be better in Chrono Trigger. It's that rare superstar combo that somehow fits perfectly.
The music. The gameplay. The story. 💯
the most grossly underrated game by Squaresoft, and one of the greatest games ever made, was made by the same team who made Chrono Trigger... its called Super Mario RPG... it is soo fucking good, guys. if you loved chrono trigger and never played or heard of mario rpg, do yourself a favor and play it.
Thanks for all the fantastic reviews just got my repro Chrono trigger in the mail today.
This is one of my favorite games of all time.
