Thank you, for the video. You are the first youtuber that I think feels the same way I do about the denman brush. It literally takes all my volume away 😑. I feel like it gives me 20 curls on my entire head lol. Maybe because most of my curls are going in the same direction and I have medium to low density. I do however use the denman to refresh a stubborn curl from time to time. I prefer the rake and shake method for its volume. I have also noticed scense switching and using my preferred technique, that my curls are becoming more bouncy and strong on their own. I'm not altering my natural curl pattern and using tension on my hair. I use a wet brush to detangle and distribute product then finish with the rake and shake for big hair 😃.
Super validating video on why i couldn't even buy one when I went to do so. CONFUSING AS HECK! Do you have a video on Denman for day 2 hair? I am 2C/3A and getting curl isn't a problem, but I'm lower density hair and really intrigued with the 4 row look for day 2-3 where my hair does get even tighter curl and that Denman brush could give me better volume.
@@ElizabethDohertyThomas YES!! Including link to my refresh video here! If Link doesn’t work you should be able to search refresh curly hair and it will pop up! ua-cam.com/video/OmbrW4aoxYw/v-deo.html
Maybe you can use the four row Denman brush on the bottom half of the hair and use the 9 row Denman brush on the top of the scalp. So you'll have the fullness underneath and the defined curls on the top. Do a video on it.
This is the best denman brush video I’ve seen! Thank you!! I used my 7 row on my wavy hair and it just made it straight. Going to try to take the rows out tonight :)
Still haven't been able to get Denman (no matter how many rows) to do anything but straighten almost like a flat iron. With scrunching and gel I'm approaching 3a hair with lots of volume so I'll think about trying again, but not sure.
As a personal experience, try it horizontally; the first time I used it I tried it horizontally (not vertical like janelle does), and had really good results...but then I started using it vertically and got decent results, but horizontally gives me the best (also, I try to not section it that much, just brush horizontally from below)
i'm having the exactly same problem. it really straightens out my hair to the point where it's barely even wavy. at least there's no frizz, but i want my curls ugh
I've always had trouble getting the denman to do anything different than my normal routine. I took out rows because i heard it might give me better clumps than the 7 and it didn't seem to do much. but the finger for tension i think may be a game changer. 4 rows there is almost no tension. Excite to try it again.
I am a little confused. I have fine but medium dense hair with a 2b wave pattern. I bought a 9 row "Denman type" brush. Should I remove Rows? I would like more curl definition with less clumping.
What would happen if you used a 7 row? Would it give you a middle of the row option? What if you did some clumps with a 9 and some with a four? Would you get volume and definition or would that just make a mess?
Your shower walls are absolutely beautiful and so clean. What do you use, how often do you use, and is there a certain way you clean, when doing your shower walls.
I'm so happy I found you. I currently have 4 denamn brushes in my Amazon cart 🙃 idk which brush to get so I approved this video. From a new subscriber 😉
Interesting, would be nice to see if hair was equal on each side. Not how you would style it, but does having more weight on one side because of the side part play a role?
Great video, I use the 4 rows myself and find it better for volume but might try adding another row or 2 after seeing this for the definition. I just ordered the Denman D12 3 row comb and I'm interested to see what happens with that, would love if you could do a video on that, thank you:)
The curl routine i wanna try is -A leave in conditioner -Maybe a curl enhancer -And a gel But i don't know which products to use, do you have any recommendations??

If I use the denman brush it seems to just take out whatever little wave I have ☹️ BUT my hair does really well when I just let it do it’s own thing!! Have you ever used the flex jelly stuff from curl smith? I ordered it but I’m nervous because it was like $25 😅
I use my wet brush almost all the time. It eliminates frizz for me. I’ll occasionally use the Denman for more definition, but I always regret it because I like volume.
WOW I just ordered the 7 and so glad because I have fine thin hair and get the "all want to move together in the same place" so will take rows out! #teamvolumeandfullness
Good comparison! I know you mentioned rolling the Denman with your curls, but have you tried it going the opposite way, to the back of your head instead? If so, what difference have you noticed? Thank you.
I have only used my Denman (7 row) a handful of times. I'm not thrilled with the results I have received. I was going to try to remove rows but I honestly didn't think I would ever get the brush reassembled after removing it so I quit before the entire thing was out 😂. I'll be trying that now with your tip. My curly waves used to be so pretty but after moving a couple times and different water sources, it's thrown it out of whack and I don't know if they will ever come back like they used to be. 😔
I don’t know which one to get😩i have short- medium hair 3A-3B curls but I got it bleached and i need a brush that won’t break my hair🥺also my hair is kinda thick and I have a lot of hair🙏🏼
Thanks so much for making this video, you have such a similar curl pattern to me (im very fine hair and lose volume as soon as i gain length) and made it super easy for me to decide i need the 9 row (team definition here! Woo)
I have a question. Why do you style your hair with a brush before you apply styling products? It seems like the products would not be evenly distributed this way. Meaning they're not combed through. I've always applied all of my lotions and potions, combing each product through first, then I style and encourage the curls. I'm just really curious.
I applied my leave in in the shower and curl cream immediately before brushing, then applied the gel after I had used the brush for styling 😊 I am with you I generally apply stylers first then do whatever I’m going to do to my hair. I have seen some use a brush first and I think this is to ensure hair is completely dentangled and/or smoothed down before applying products to reduce frizz!
I only apply gel before brush styling if it's a really watery gel - I actually used that curl smith aqua up gel the other day for the 1st time and applied it prior to brush styling, and a bit more after. But anything thicker I only apply leave in / cream before brushing to form clumps, then glaze and scrunch gel into the formed clumps. I think it just depends on what your hair likes best
This was awesome! Thank you for this! Also what products do you recommend for wavy, thick hair? I've heard Curlsmith is good, I've also heard LUS brand is good, and I've also heard Eva NYC is good too. I'm having a hard time deciding! Lol 🤣
Can you please do or link a video on your Denman refresh?? I'm TEAM VOLUME but I'm also frustrated with day 3 frizz and hand styling makes it so much worse.
*struggles to put the brush back in the handle while watching the video hoping to get a hack on placing it back* But also in my head: I'll just give up and buy a new brush instead, I'll save myself the mental damage. But the video is a great help!! Thanks for it!!🤣💜
I have fine curly hair and anytime I use more than one product it weighs my hair down. Any suggestions to get my curls looking better with just one product?
Put your product in with your head upside down, so you're adding in curl and not brushing it out. Scrunch to fight gravity, diffuse upside down to encourage curls. I brush the top of my hair straight up or away from my scalp, so it's not losing the volume on the top.
Hi Jannelle! Amazing comparison :D, love your videos and actually you’re the one that got me started on CG. I saw you mention something in the video and remembered it’s been on my mind. Never figured out the answer though: why do curls tend to clump together more and more as time goes by after washday? Thanks!
I have never done this method but showed my manager and she tried it but didnt use any product)😒). I wouldn't mind trying this but I just cannot stand my hair dripping wet I'd have to dry for like 8 minutes with a turbie.

I tried doing tgecwrap around the handle business. Looks nice but doesn't make lasting curls. They don't refresh. Would only be good for one evening out.
Denman is good for detangling and for styling it is helpful with creating clumps and definition. The more rows the smaller more defined clumps, less rows bigger clumps and typically more volume. Traditional Combs in my experience give less definition and more volume!
I would try removing some of the rows! Also, some curl types need less manipulation to style, I personally get the best results when I do very little to my hair. My last video shows that routine if you would like visuals ❤️
I have a MASSIVE problem with my curl families getting intertwined. It's really bad throughout both sides (not really the back). I can't even separate many of them, cuz there will be 2 mixed together with a skinnier 3rd that winds through the other 2. It ends up looking like one giant clump, but when you look close or try to separate, that's when you see what's going on. It's bizarre. These families are into orgies lol
😂 at the last line!!! This can be due to thinning at the ends of some clumps. My stylist in Vegas told me that sometimes weaker curls will grab onto other clumps for strength if you will. I have that problem more when I have thinning/damage towards my ends. When my curls are the same density root to tip it happens a lot les. It also can be due to the cut. Stylists can cut the hair in a way that will encourage curls to clump into families. My stylist did this for a while when I had damage to help even out my density root to tip, then changed to cutting curl by Curl as my curl clumps got stronger!
@@JannelleOShaughnessy That makes sense! The skinnier 3rd piece that winds between them (essentially connecting the better ones) is always more of a wave that winds through a neighboring spiral on each side. As for the cut, that very well may be! I've been cutting my own hair for so long lol! I have an upcoming appt with a curly specialist for the 1st time in my life & cannot wait!!
