  • On April 17, 1958, the Brussels World Expo officially opened with 54 countries and international organizations participating. The Soviet Pavilion and the U.S. Pavilion, adjacent to each other and of similar size, became the two largest and most attention-grabbing pavilions in the expo.
As early as October of the previous year, the Soviet Union had successfully launched the first artificial satellite. The Soviet Pavilion at the Brussels World Expo prominently showcased a replica of this remarkable achievement, positioning the model of the artificial satellite conspicuously in the exhibition hall. Simultaneously, the pavilion featured numerous high-tech achievements, including a model of the world's first nuclear power plant and an icebreaker powered by nuclear energy.
In comparison, despite the United States successfully launching its first artificial satellite, "Explorer 1," two months prior, its pavilion did not exhibit corresponding satellite technology or any high-tech products. Instead, the focus was on lifestyle, with daily fashion shows and a 360° film titled "Journey through America" playing on color television, presenting examples of the superiority of the American way of life.
The Soviet Union represented technology, while the United States represented lifestyle. This seemed to be the prevailing sentiment among the majority of European residents after visiting the pavilions.

After the dissolution of Soviet, Russians gained much experience in working with Intel and other semiconductor factories. In fact, Russia already supplied many components to ASML. Russia is able to manufacture rare earth materials required for chip manufacturing. So they have great confidence that they can establish 28mn process.

Then, you must be familiar with the name Vladimir Pentkowsky, the father of the Intel's Pentium line, he came with a team from the Russian Academy of Sciences to teach Intel how to multiprocessing, out of order execution, cache and supporting memory processing and multi- processes that the only limiting factor was Intel's ability to soak it up choosing to do single serial processing instead of long instruction parallel processing ( the Soviets were doing multiprocessing since 1962 with the ICBM's )... The second team of the Soviet Academy of sciences came to help Intel again to build a Long instruction set parallel processor which later was called Itanium but who knows what they were going to use it for but they ditch the Soviets and invited Hewlett Packard to join them but it was a flop since they could not cut it in the programming of long instruction set but there was no way back and ended op in the lab to never be a commercial item...... Or you guys hears the team from the Soviet Academy of Sciences that came to teach SUN MICRO SYSTEMS to teach them how to build fast parallel processing processors that started the SPARC processor line that Oracle and Fujitsu uses and that was instrumental in building the internet AND that was a completed successful project that it is still is produced today thanks to the Russians!....

@@alexandervt641 The Soviet Union lagged behind in implementation of production for the population. Reason: planned production.
The USSR was ahead of the West in developments and discoveries. Under the USSR, two factories were built. One for the separation of inert gases and the second in Ukraine for ultra-clean purification of inert gases for the production of lithography. As of 2022, Russia's share in global supplies of inert gases is 70%. In Ukraine, 2 factories were stopped; this part of the world market was taken over by China.
Based on your logic, did the USSR foresee the development in the West of lithography using inert gases? :) No. Development of Soviet scientists. 2011 lithography using ultraviolet radiation was developed by Russian scientists. There is another thing that plays in Russian favor, nowadays you don't actually have to have a top shelf tech to make all necessary calculations fast enough. Of course 7 or 14nm lithography is great, but if power consumption and heat isn't a problem you can easily get away with 30 or so nm, yes it will heat a lot, and it will be somewhat slower than top notch cpus, but at the end of the day difference won't be all that significant. And also due to the high sensitivity to radiation and em, usage of "thin" lithography in aviation an space is limited.

It's an interesting topic, and more or less what I expected.
Probably the only country who can do the whole process independently and actually produce their own resulting chips with their own equipment is China.
In Europe we suffer a huge deficit in this area, but peculiarly, we also have the largest lithography company in the world. Our chip industry is minor, but in a somewhat more healthy state than Russia, but far from independent and unable to allow us technological independence if we need it.
Ironically the market leader, the US, probably don't have the capability or knowhow to go from design to production of these chips, or at least are unable to do it in practice. They are in a better position than Europe, but they don't master the whole process either, and so most production and equipment is outsourced. To be able to achieve the same independence as China in this area, it would require a rather big leap. Sadly, by pushing China in this area of technology, we are forcing them to be even stronger and more independent in this area.

The tale about Scada has been around for a long time, so there is little trust in the video, since the information is clearly being collected from the trash. And there was this. The builders were in a hurry and, sometimes, neglected to comply with the established norms. Two such violations caused the accident, as revealed by the investigation of the state commission. Firstly, no links were inserted in the pipe joints to compensate for the change in pipe size when the temperature changed. Secondly, no additional load was hung on the pipes to keep them underground in a swampy area. As a result, when the warm April days came, the pipeline came out of the swampy soil to the surface. In the sun, the pipes expanded, and at night sharp contractions began, a spark slipped through, and the gas ignited. The fire went sideways and reached a parallel gas pipeline laid a dozen and a half meters from the first one. That one also caught fire.

The USSR had its own developments in this area that could compete with the United States, but in 67 the Central Committee of the CPSU decided that it was better to copy processors from the United States, thus they closed the prospect of developing their own computer technology. Copying naturally takes time, which of course leads to a lag.
Currently, a factory for the production of 28 nm process technology is being built in Russia. Lithographic equipment is also being developed. Until the 30s, an alpha and beta version will be released, which will reveal flaws, and closer to the 30th year they expect to release the final version, on which it will be possible to produce 7-11 nm. Russia has a powerful scientific base, besides, some Russians have worked with ASML, so there are opportunities to create their own.

only way they are going to win anything is to do it all in a different way.
e.g. optical chips or something other than physical transistors.
otherwise they will simply be way behind the curve

That‘s exactly the point. Which friends does Russia have? Iran and North Korea, the only countries to support Putins war. Without friends and in international isolation, it is impossible to develop a semiconductor industry. Especially, for a poor and backward country like Russia. In times of war.

Ursula, the unelected Queen of Europe has said that the Russians have to take the chips out of kitchen appliances like washing machines and dishwashers to put into cruise missiles. I never knew a dishwasher could be so dangerous.

Simply put: Russia has enough inland capability to have a domestic productions of the chips needed for military/space (yes, they are apparently way less capable than civilian ones but in reality it's a question of reliability and ruggedness) applications also for what it came to the increased need due to the current conflict.
They would be surely not so cheap as the ones they imported from Taiwan because they have not same wafer productivity capabilities.
For what it come to civilian applications, well actually they could import them from China and develop their own finished versions later.
