Kevin, Wondering if you could pre-make the cage & sell them as a 2nd income for the quail?? Make just the panels 8ft x 2ft bottom & make the front & back & end, ship them flat to the customer. They can make the end supports & then they can screw all the panels together? Kevin, you could be known as the IKEA man of the " Quail World"! This would work for a lot of people that do not have a workshop or skill to build??? 😁
I like that the cage isn't over engineered. Keeping it simple. The quail don't weigh much so no need for extra structure and material. Something tells me you may need another one soon.
Kevin, I am new (newish) to Quail and every time someone asks about Quail hutches I tell them that your build was a main inspiration for mine (my hutch is a blend between yours and Slightly Redneck's since mine have to be outside). I tell them to look up your video. Today, I'm making a playlist of those who have taught me about Quail. This is one of the first videos I'm adding. But I noticed, this doesn't seem to be on your quail playlist. I had to search to find it. (not complaining. Just letting you know to maybe add it). You and Sarah have inspired and taught me in so many ways. Thank you.
Great video. I bet you feel like you’re in heaven with that big new workshop. Keep sharing your projects with us. You do such clear down to earth instructions.
Eegads! Never thought of snakes making a meal of the livestock! You're so clever to share this tidbit. My father was a carpenter so I particularly enjoyed this episode.
Some engineering advice. Make the floor end of your cage ends the same as the top; that is to say the crossbars should be 1 1/2” off the floor. The rails should be 8’ and attached the same as the rails forming the cage. Since floors are seldom perfectly flat, having only four legs making contact will allow the cage to settle securely to the floor and no rocking. By offsetting and overlapping the rails and crossbars at the corner will make them stronger and will eliminate failure from fasteners colliding at the same intersection. The angle braces will benefit from this as well as they will be attached at different heights.
Good job Kevin. I know reading some of the comments below that many would make changes to your build. I see no problem with what you built. I see from your first build, that you made changes to the doors. Live and learn is how I see things. Enjoy your videos, and look forward to many more. Blessings on you guys as y’all share with us🙂
Good ☕️☕️ Morning Kevin & Sarah, the quail cages are awesome! You both take such good care of your animals & birds.I am sure everyone appreciates your knowledge like I do!Have a great day.👏😊👍
Genuinely love the troubleshooting with the building. Goes to show that most issues that arise can actually have easy solutions. Thanks for showing the process.
You need a fancy restaurant with a fancy chef to buy quail eggs and quails from you on a regular basis. I’ve never eaten the little birds or the eggs but I’ve heard that they are a delicious delicacy. Good luck to you on this venture.
rather than having to clean the poop off the floor , would a shelf built under the cages, where you could slide in plastic low rise bins to catch the poop and easy to slide out and empty, not sure if you would use wire again to make the second shelf for the bins, depending on the cost or just the frame and staple a trap on and you can just sweep the poop off into a bin, keeping the floor clean. no bending over and you can hose down the tarp if needed. just a thought!!
Thank you so very much for all this info on quail! You inspired me to raise my own quail! I love that almost anyone can raise quail, whether you are in the city or country.
Awesome job Kevin ! You talked me into raising Jumbo Quail. I got my hot plates for my brooder yesterday. My Brinsea incubator is coming today. All I need to do is build a brooder and cages and order hatching eggs from Zach ! Thank you for all the inspiration and awesome videos !
Exactly. Jumbo quail are just regular quail that have been chosen for breeding because they are slightly heavier. Failure to do that and your quail won't stay "jumbo".
Just a thought…instead of using cardboard under the pens, I would go to a local flooring store or a box store(Home Depot, Lowes) and get some remnants of a thick grade loose lay vinyl. You can collect the poop off of it and then hose it off and lay it back down. It has fiberglass in it and lays flat. I use it to line my kitchen cabinets and my canning cabinets. It’s wonderful.
Nice work. I recently started raising rabbits for meat and manure. Your videos have been very helpful. Thinking of starting to raise some quail too. Look like you have a bunch of videos on quail as well. Thank you for the valuable information you and your wife share.
I followed your channel as well as the coturnix channel a while back. Cool to see you take on Quail. The DIY by Terry is now triple the cost for materials. Luckily I obtained a free undercounter fridge and will turn that into a chest style incubator. In late January I'll be looking to Myshire for hatching eggs. Love that there are so many great channels put there for self sufficiency!!!!
Awesome timing!!! I was just thinking I wanted to try quail after your last video, and we had some new neighbors move in across the roads who raise quail. . Time to binge watch quail videos! Thanks!
After many years, I finally built some work/outfeed tables on wheels to get off working on the floor. You could go ahead and make some tables soon, you will save your back.
Hi, Dakota here :) I'm north of y'all in Washington County. My cages are quite similar, but I did two things I did not see you do. I built sand boxes on the ends of each cage to give them a solid walled safety area with sand to dust bathe and lay their eggs in, making them cleaner, and less likely to break or freeze. Also, I did the FLOORS (only) in coated hardware cloth because, as I understand it, their urine is exceedingly acidic and will quickly damage the wire on the bottom if not coated, leading to foot problems that can be pretty severe, such as Bumblefoot. I do the same on my handmade rabbit cages. My cages started out outside, but without the roof finished, it was too hard to keep everything dry so they moved into a shed and I attached the cages to the shed studs. I use aluminum bun baking pans between layers to catch all the birdy gold :)
I love your idea for the quail cage. I used your design but on a little bigger scale by stacking them on top of each other and I use sand to catch the poop between the pens and I just sift it once a week with a kitty litter scoop.
We just got our first ten Coturnix quail and are really excited about raising them. We also built a 10x2 cage for them to grow and then we will move them as you did. Thanks for all your help with ours Kevin. God Bless you and your family.
hey kevin you could just nail another piece of scrap onto the top of THE DOOR to cover that gap at the top around the lock... it would stop the snakes from getting in..great job over all !!! since your new quail are going to be bigger... wouldnt that req a bigger cage...?
Well I finally getting started raising quail.. Last night I picked up 48 quail eggs and two hens.. I hace the hens in my office until my quail cage is built which will be soon.. mine will be the same as the one in this video.. thanks you and your wife gor all your video.. I have loved them and have been watching for a good whole now.. THANK YOU AGAIN
I love your vids! I was wondering why you didn't put it under the other cage? By using a sheet of FRP you could slide the droppings to the back into a trough for easier cleanup. Again, your vids are so well put together with your pick of background music and not overwhelming. Thank You for encouraging us with your faith, fundamentals and foresight into making Living Traditions!
Kevin, I was wondering how many great projects will be made in that great workshop. Don't forget to say hi to Sarah once in a while. LOL. Have a great time.
Kevin,. If you were to install the bottom braces so only the legs extended to the floor, perhaps 3" - 4" above the floor, you would have a way to sweep up the mess on the floor without the 2" x 2" frame trapping the mess. I know, Monday morning quarterbacking from an observer is not fair play! Just an idea from someone who doesn't know how you clean the floor under the cages! Perhaps you use a plastic tarp under the cages?
Thank you for explaining each step so thoroughly and going through all the materials required. As a newbie builder it is very frustrating to go into one of the big box stores and going to the screw section and seeing wall to ceiling shelves with no idea what you really need. Zach uses plastic coated wire for floor bottoms I believe. Have you ever used it? I imagine it costs more.
Thank you Kevin (and Sarah) for this build video. So useful for what ever critters you need to secure or contain. I always know to come back and search your channel for "build" if looking for a concept for a future project.
This is what I got for a Materials/Cut list: 2x4's cut to 2x2's on a table saw. 4 2x2 5' 6 2x2 25" (he built with 24" but suggests 25" to avoid cutting 1" of the floor off) 4 2x2 7'9" 4 2x2x8 12 2x2x21" 7 2x2x10 1/2" 8 Scrap 2x2 8" 4 2x2 10" 4 2x2 29 1/2" 1/2 x 1/2" wire 4 hinges 2 barrel latches Corrections welcome.
Jeff, I was thinking the same thing. Instead of all the little pieces on the front just stretch a large piece all the way across and then make your cuts with an angle grinder using a cutting wheel.
I used 1in by 1/2 inch wire for sides and top and 1/2by12in for bottom. I made mine solely wire and hung it from the barn ceiling. Cheaper and you won’t run into wood decay
Hey Gang, Kevin, great How-To video, very inspirational and informative, keep up the good work really enjoy your podcasts and adventures on the homestead God's Good Blessings to you and your beautiful family XOXOXOXO
I think I would make the top as a completed shape and attach the wire screen, THEN screw it down onto the top of the end frame - easier to put the wire on it that way.

It needs to fit together and comes with all conectors. I'd buy that!
I like that the cage isn't over engineered. Keeping it simple. The quail don't weigh much so no need for extra structure and material. Something tells me you may need another one soon.

I'm loving the Quail videos. They seem so easy to care for in a home. 👍

I loved watching you build it. Now I feel like I can do it on my own. Thank you for you clear instructions.
Good ☕️☕️ Morning Kevin & Sarah, the quail cages are awesome! You both take such good care of your animals & birds.I am sure everyone appreciates your knowledge like I do!Have a great day.👏😊👍
Kevin, you are a wonderful teacher. Surely you know you have that gifting. And I appreciate it very much! God bless you all! :)
Good Morning! My husband is now interested in Raising quail as well. So cool keep up the videos!! God bless you!
Kevin, you must be LOVING your new shop area?! Lots of room to get projects done.
Yes! It's sweet!
That’s quite a spacious Workshop!
What a beautiful area to work during the Winter months... It's always fun watching a good plan come together! Great job!
That's a great quail cage and easy to build. Looks like it will last for years. Great video, thanks
Genuinely love the troubleshooting with the building. Goes to show that most issues that arise can actually have easy solutions. Thanks for showing the process.
Great video and God Bless you and yours as well
Kevin - I made a smaller 2'X3' two level grow out cage based on your plans using 1X1 lumber. We have a smaller space than you. Great instructions!!!
Oh, that workshop is BEAUTIFUL!!!
Want to thank you just started and I built this cage. I love it
Just starting my journey with quail, Thx for the no b/s videos Brilliant !
You need a fancy restaurant with a fancy chef to buy quail eggs and quails from you on a regular basis. I’ve never eaten the little birds or the eggs but I’ve heard that they are a delicious delicacy. Good luck to you on this venture.
Hands down.. the best building video I’ve seen. And I’ve seen.. a lottttt! Hats off to ya man

Be sure to apply selective breeding. Some "jumbos" won't be so large and if you let them breed, you'll eventually end up with regular size quail.
@@tropicallivingoverseas5202 are you meaning to keep only the larger birds for breeding?
Exactly. Jumbo quail are just regular quail that have been chosen for breeding because they are slightly heavier. Failure to do that and your quail won't stay "jumbo".

Good idea with your pantry shelves. 👍👍👍🤔👍👍🤔🤔. Many grand blessings everyone everywhere and always.
Or the Dog crate trays which come in various sizes and have a lip like a big sheet cake pan.

Kevin and Sarah love you and your family. Wishing you and yours all the best. Blessings.
Great video 👍🏽
Thanks for sharing. I will be building this cage tomorrow for my quail.
Built one of these after your design (a coupe of sight mods) and it came out great! Appreciate you sharing. Now we need to get some eggs incubating!
Hi, Dakota here :)

With your encouragement... We're going to get quail next year for eggs and meat. Thanks!
Thank you for showing and explaining as you go. This makes it so easy.

Thanks for the video. I patterned my pens after this.
I love your channel. I do wish you would use safety goggles. My husband suffered with a serious eye injury as a result of sawing without them.
I love these quail vids ,keep em coming Kevin.
The new workshop is amazing! You make raising quail look like lots of fun!
Fantastic tutorial Kevin! Great job! And you can use these same ideas and skills to make this work for other things! Thank you. ~Sharon
Definitely building these. Thank you sir
Good Morning, Because of you and your videos, I'm going to try raising quail, in my apartment, in the second bedroom.
So interesting!
I hope that works out well for you. Good luck!
Awesome! I bet you will love it!
Awesome video and awesome cage for quail Thanks for sharing your video with us.
Nice job Kevin. I will use your plans when I get started with quail in the spring.
I enjoy the quail videos and I believe I’m going to start my own thank you for sharing your knowledge and your skill

I was wondering about the same thing. Can still be done, if more space is necessary.
Think he likes them all at eye-level. Just a guess, if space was an issue, making stacked cages would make great use of space.
Great job Kevin !! I am thinking on raising quail next year so as normal I will be following you. Have a fantastic weekend and God Bless 🙌
You JUST TAUGHT ME HOW TO BUILD QUAIL CAGE.I BEEN WANTED TO DO FOR LONG TIME THANKS
I DON'T HAVE THEM YET
What a great Shop!!!
I am impressed, you mitered the door frames!
Kevin, I was wondering how many great projects will be made in that great workshop. Don't forget to say hi to Sarah once in a while. LOL. Have a great time.
Kevin thanks for the great video production you're such an inspiration .
Wow!! Very Nice!! God Bless and have a Great Week!!😀⚘❤
Good job Kevin and nice shop

Great job and video content guys. I like the simplicity of the design. Stay safe up there and keep on growing 🤠
Love the new barn
Thanks mate nice idea will be adding extra bits for mine but thanks for the idea
Excellent video!
Thanks
This is what I got for a Materials/Cut list:
2x4's cut to 2x2's on a table saw.

7 2x2x10 1/2"
8 Scrap 2x2 8"
4 2x2 10"
4 2x2 29 1/2"
1/2 x 1/2" wire
4 hinges
2 barrel latches
Corrections welcome.
Great video. Kevin, I think you are enjoying your new shop.
Great job, and you saves so much money. Enjoy your channel. God bless
Great video Kevin! Can't wait to see how your quail venture turns out.
awesome wood work Kevin good job in raising more quails and building a second cage
Love the work shop, and the cage design. God bless!
I really like your building.
Thank you! I've made 2 already 🤗
Just a tip using the weld wire. Use a grinder with a cutting wheel and cut the wire and save yourself a ton of time and sore fingers.
Jeff, I was thinking the same thing. Instead of all the little pieces on the front just stretch a large piece all the way across and then make your cuts with an angle grinder using a cutting wheel.
Looks good Kevin.
Kevin, another great video.

Nice work Kevin.
Nice looking cages !!! but I really like your workshop best !😂
That was Fabulous

Nice job 👏 👍 👌
I think I would make the top as a completed shape and attach the wire screen, THEN screw it down onto the top of the end frame - easier to put the wire on it that way.
Oh I love it building more
This is great. Merry Christmas to you and your family. I pray for all blessings in 2022.
This was a fantastic video.
You have got me rereading all my poultry books and getting more from the library .
You are really enjoying your new workshop. 🥰
Looking good. God bless. Kansas
Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. Great job. Also have been wondering how the piglets are doing. 😊
My pasture is full of cedar trees. I think I will use your design by cutting down trees. The cost of wood makes it worth my added time.
Kevin you make that look so easy
Great info on building this!
