  • Had a nightmare this week on my cruise to Chester! This video shows the order in which we tried to troubleshoot the problem, so I hope you enjoy our fault finding mission as two girls without a clue.
    At the time of writing this I am still not 100% sure if the problem is with my blackstone gearbox, reduction box, bearings or prop shaft but thats the joys are owning narrowboat with a traditional Lister engine.
    Thank you so much for watching. If you do enjoy these videos please subscribe as its free to do and really helps my channel grow.

    Great video. Hello from Malibu, California. My grandfather was born in Nottingham UK. 1897. He left at age 18 for Tricadie, Nova Scotia. Canada and my mom is from Maine USA. Her family is from Cadillac, France originally 1723. Then 1923 Quebec, Canada. Anyway, English in my family so I thought to tune in and check out CRUISING THE CANALS in UK. I know David from another channel of Narrowboats. He was a BBC News man and Journalist who sold his home, bought a Narrowboat and checked out of London life. That takes guts or real burn out. I knew David when he had only 1000 subscribers. Today he has 230,000 subscribers and a Van and bought a new Home and sold his boat. wow! Anyway, I am sure you know David. My wife is from Milan, Italy and she has family in TRING & Sheffield. Her Niece Daria lives in Sheffield. yes, English born and raised and never left. My wife left Italy when I m,et her in Germany US Army 1974 and she became VP Warner Bros Studio works for Liam Neeson, actor. Marlowe 2023 film is our film. Now you know who we are. I really loved the video. Nice job. It takes true grit to live out on a narrowboat. I wish I could do it. I am a former 9th Infantry Division soldier but, older than you and would find it difficult, And the expense of break-downs like engine work would drive me nuts. I have a 1981 Corvette and can hardly afford that. Anyway, hello from California Stay safe. Bless you, James & Mariangela, Malibu, California 2023

    Grease points (nipples) can be elusive. I had a hidden one on my Honda motorcycle driveshaft. It definitely let me know when it was dry but until I found it, I had no idea it was even there. I had gone over my entire bike numerous times but somehow missed a nipple. I'm usually pretty good with maintenance but sometimes it happens, one gets away. lol

    Fabulous vlog! Problems with power trains are regular issues with boats of all kinds (I have a 70 year old ketch ...but with a modern lump alas). You guys patiently problem solved, sought advice and emphasised the positive ...really well done. Keeping that engineering properly maintained is a great thing to do and - by the way- the Lister is a wonderful Museum piece and so worth looking after - seeing it clean and showing off its old school lines is so cool. Really enjoy your pieces and don't worry the 'dry nipple' show - imo it was was easily one of the best!

    Just stumled across your channel. I have a Blackstone gearbox & a reduction box similar to yours plus a Lister engine, but a JP2M (water cooled marine engine, rather than your air cooled engine). THe engine is 1950 so after 73 years, the odd thing needs a bit of maintenance. Still probably more reliable & longer lasting hopefully than any modern engine. It is all a learning curve. I'm definitely not a mechanic but everything on these old engines is big, robust & designed to be fixed, so you should be fine for a long time. Enjoyed your channel & so subscribing.

    When testing to see if something is too hot NEVER use your finger tips> feel with the back of your fingers. A burn will be far less inconvenient. As for the grease you should keep pumping until the grease squeezing out of the bearing rims is the same color and consistency of the grease you have in the grease gun. That clears all the burnt or deteriorated grease from the bearing. In summary. Pump until grease comes out of the bearing sides and is clean grease not grubby.

    Yep, towing and then being towed. What goes around comes around. Being a good human being brings you good human beings. And yes, don't put that thing in gear! (said by a retired diesel mechanic who knows nothing about narrowboats). Girl/lady/woman power ... when guy boaters ask me how I handled my 1939 wood boat so well (and for 19 years) and they often said "where's your husband?", I always said "hey, the boat doesn't care about my personal plumbing!" Women are every bit as capable as men, maybe even more so, maybe more careful, more clean, more willing to work slowly and make sure the work is perfect, and LESS apt to force some critical mechanical part and make the situation worse. :-) Ok, just my tupence worth. Jakks (sp?) is a gem. wow, great bridge over the canal and walls, gosh that was stunning. Absolutely love the shot of Jakks feet in the air, I laughed out loud, yep that's what mechanics do, we are so often upside down, ha! A friend of mine carries a medical stethoscope to listen to bearings, and to individual engine pistons and such and the water pump, etc. Love your blog. I'm catching up, I am! 🙂

    This a year ago. If it ever happens again, use a squirt can with engine oil in it to one at a time, lubricate the prop shaft bearings. If one or the other quiets with oil applied, you have found the problem. Second, turn the shaft by hand if you can move it. Any play in the universal joint is suspect. UV joints are greased needle bearings. Hope it never happens again.

    My my girls in the Engine room times sure have changed !
    if its not all those bits that you've checked It could be you have a damaged prop ,a chipped or bent prop blade could set up vibration It could also be a stern gland /bearing prob causing vibration .BTW Lister and Blackstone were the same company, Lister took over Blackstone many moons ago. When I was at sea lots of ships had Lister powered emergency fire pumps ,they were used because they were so reliable .Take care and good luck I hope your repairs are quick and cheap .

    I drove construction earth movers and cranes of every type, we were paid an extra hour each day to fuel up, check oil level and grease the joints. The ones on the arms and buckets need it every day while the PTO shafts etc. once a week would do. If the foreman fitter found it not done, he could stop your greasing money for the whole week, now that's 6 hours half a day's extra money.
    I'm surprised you didn't pick up on nuts and bolts being male and female and should not be done up without a washer.

    Nice work sorting that out.
    When you are running the boat it may help to monitor the suspect bearing for temperature. The whirring sound is friction and friction causes heat. If its a bearing that is attached to either the reduction gear or the reverse gear it might be a little warm naturally but if you notice too much heat its a problem.
    Its best to be stopped when you touch the bearing, any loose clothing near a turning shaft can spell disaster,....please be careful!!

    Could be worn CV joint or bearing . If the CV joint is work it can sometimes cause clunking and prop shaft imbalance . Have a look at land rover CV joints give you idea what to look for and test for

    Good Morning Heidi - It has been my experience that once you have identified the problem, have the proper tool(s) and apply the proper techniques, you can generally have any job licked in reasonable time - you just keep trying until you get it right. - now that you have your bearings you know which direction to go. Have a wonderful day - ta ta and ha ha. 😇😇

    Looking at the slight movement on the shaft, and the slight noise when it's turning, the problem could well be with the universal joint between the long shaft and the reduction box, if it is it's a relatively easy job to change the bearing as everything to do that comes in a kit. If it does turn out to be the universal joint, the cheapest place to get the bearing kit will be from a motor factors. One thing I have learnt so far is that there is nothing quite the beautiful sound of a Lister slowly chugging away ! As for the lock, it's another of Telford's many "wonders" as there was nothing he seemed unable to overcome.

    • @TheNarrowboatPirate
      @TheNarrowboatPirate  3 роки тому

      Hey Peter 😃 I’m currently at a boatyard and the bearing is on order - they know that the thrust bearing has definitely gone and are replacing that then if there is still movement they will look at the one in the reduction box too 😃 we didn’t have a clue but it’s nice to get the professionals in 😂😂 it eases the panic 😱 haha 😃🏴‍☠️

      @@TheNarrowboatPirate Great to hear you have it sorted, taking everything into account I suppose it's just wear because of age, the same as what happens to us humans ! If you need to have a lot of work done on something that involves bearings and other parts being replaced it can often be better in the long run to get an exchange unit, especially when you are on the move all the time. Hope everything goes well with the repairs and you soon escape the marina, and get your freedom back. If all goes to plan I hope to be out there continuous cruising single handed next year, everyone I have contacted has been so helpful and I cant thank everyone enough, even with all the advice and general info everyone has shared with me the idea of running a narrowboat still seems daunting so would you mind if I ask you for advice at times please as you come across as very capable and ready to get in there, get dirty and ready to try anything so you know how to deal with the issue if it comes up again. I know a little about boats but nothing about narrowboats, engines I am fine with as I have stripped and rebuilt them in the past, and most things above the waterline I am sure I can cope with.

    and woe is me. You are a brilliant person. We from uk, currently we are in Ohio USA and we are about 6 months away from buying a boat and joining all you narrowboaters on the canals. We hope all works out ok, I guess having a hot box without enough lubrication is not a good thing, we hope you box cools off a bit and become slippery and moist again. 😁😉😉 C & H

    • @colincox1688

      Just a thought for the future, using an infrared laser thermometer, (probably available from screwfix) will allow you to identify which box is hot and grease that one more often. I am being serious, have a chat with someone who mentors you on mechanical issues and they will be able to elaborate on this point. Good luck, I hope we can find a boat with an engine such as yours. Take Care

    Two comments.
    Why was there a clanging sound when you put it in gear that diminished as rpm went up? Also notes a wear ring on the shaft as per a shiny band around the shaft?
    Second, the carb on yiur generatir needs adjusting. The surging is an indicator of fuel starvation. Open ge main jet a bit until it runs smooth.

    • @TheNarrowboatPirate
      @TheNarrowboatPirate  Рік тому

      Shiny band was where the shaft was caught on a piece of ballast when it was built and readjusted …. The surging noise on the genny is when i turn on the battery charger on the boat … it just takes more power from the genny ….. it was all fixed in the next video - if you watch via the playlist they are all in order 😄🏴‍☠️

    A fabulous video. You obviously love your boat very much. After all, it's your home and your life! Congratulations to Jacks on her mechanical skills and I hope you have now sorted out the problem. with nipples/bearings/prop shaft/reduction box/gear box.
