She does regular engine checks (oil and water levels, no slipping belts, and so on), deals with topping up the water tank, emptying the elsan, and so on. She has lived on "The Black Cat" since the mid 90s (when her second book 'The Black Cat' was published; this book paid for her narrowboat to be built, hence why she was named "The Black Cat"). Obviously when family visit they will help her out, but she does not rely on them to allow her to continually cruise. On this particular voyage I was there, but as Julian (who owns the blue narrowboat ("Sapphire") in front of "The Black Cat") has mobility issues I was handling "Sapphire" while Mum was handling "The Black Cat". Mum is the sort of person who helps out genuine 'waifs and strays', and because of his medical status Julian definitely drops into that category, so Mum 'adopted' him! I am very proud to be able to say that Jenny Maxwell is my Mum! Oh, I am the scruffy 'oik' caught on camera when we were demonstrating the volume of the horns, by the way!

I live in Texas and wanted to try doing a narrowboat vacation several years ago but it didn't work out. I'm 71 so I'm so impressed by your mom and her narrowboat life. It's wonderful that she can still do the physical aspect of traveling in her narrowboat on the canals. The locks and swing bridges would be my undoing! Definitely will be looking for one of her books if she has some on Kindle. Thank you for your reply ☺️
RANDOM OVERSHARE # 1 : At 15:06 I laughed so much when you said that you get loads of things happen that are “pants” and then something amazing happens. When I was in junior school, we had a new kid from the uk join our class. She used to use the word “pants” instead of saying something was rubbish or bad, and pretty soon the entire class was saying it 😂. You know, like any fad/craze at school - at various times we also had yo-yos, that game elastics, and sticker collecting to name just a few - man I loved elastics 😂 I haven’t heard anyone say it for years, until now🙂 I even went back just double check, and to hear you say it again. It is named after a very old male "adult movie performer" (AKA "The Hedgehog"). It has been banned here in some provinces of Canada. It probably would not be up to high standards, though. 😉
There is nothing more British than cruising along our fine navigational canals and experiencing moist flaps and if that doesn't float your boat (Pun™) then nothing essentially will. I do hope you managed to keep your back cabin dry! Not only do you lift the bridges along the canals, but you life our spirits as well, cracking video!

I have worked my way from your 1st vlog, in order, and am currently up to 113 (while also watching each new week in order as they load, so seeing you in Spain last week too!). I LOVE your content, your humour, your chatty style, but most importantly, your KINDNESS. As a 13 year, one week per year narrowboat holiday'er (that was a mouthful!) - I really appreciate your comment to be kind to holiday makers - coz we don't half get a bad rap from some quarters while on the cut. Yep every Friday morning (New Zealand) I wait in anticipation and I've been doing it for at least 98 of those 100 weeks (it took a couple of weeks before finding your channel lol) AND you have 23000 subscribers. Thank you for the cruises and the fun, totally love it.
I've recently found your channel and I'm totally hooked. Your face when it was raining 🤣that's exactly how I feel about getting wet in the rain. It's so vital to life and yet so utterly unnecessary to experience. I love your boat. It's so bright and clean looking inside. Cosy and cheerful. And the fires mean it will be really snug. But the best of all is the sound of the engine. Lovely old sound. It's close to the sound of the old tractors on my Nan's farm. I learned to drive on those. Mostly unsupervised! The sound of the engine, the views and your smile is a tonic. Congratulations on 100 videos. That's as proper accomplishment. I'm sat typing this just off the side of the Grand Union at Weedon. There's a private spur off the GU into this old Napoleonic army depot. It's no longer connected to the canal, so it's basically a 1/4 mile long pond with a turning square in the middle and a very old loft bridge. It's nice to have swans and ducks just outside during the working day. Keep sailing. It looks mostly fabulous.
Well done on completing your 100th vlog. I have enjoyed every one of them. You welcome us on board no matter what the weather. Although I prefer it on the chilly side. Then I am guaranteed to have somewhere to hang my hat... 😂
Your last two (99 & 100) videos brought back some lovely memorys of our very first canal holiday. We went from Bunbury Locks (With Anglo Welsh) as far as Grindley Brook locks and back, only 4 nights 5 days, but it was wonderfull. We spent a night at Barbridge Junction and had a meal in the Joly Tar or Joly Jack Tar which nolonger exists, its a housing estate now. We spent the first night moored up just after Hurleston Locks on the Llangollen Canal. The second day we went as far as and moored up just passed Willymoor Locks and had a meal in Willymoor Lock Tavern, we spent night two there. Day three we went as far as Grindley Brook Locks, winded and headed back, This time we moored up just passed Wrenbury Mill and had a meal in the Cotten Arms. We went into Wrenbury for a walk and had a tea in the cafe/shop there, the only cafe/shop there at that time. Day four we went back to Barbridge Junction to spend our last night and we had a meal in The Old Barbridge Inn before heading back to Bunbury Locks the following day. Incidentaly, Swanley Bridge Marina didn't exist back then. Appologies for all the spelling mistakes, I never was any good at spelling!! Happy Sailing. Dave M.

When you said you'd nearly dried the first thing I thought is 'You should get some rum in you then'. Kids are too young for rum so it's best they stick to wine 😁

A fave around our house is Penne and Sausage. Really simple cook your sausage (mind your manners), cook your pasta add your favourite pasta sauce drop in the cut up sausage and boom dinner in just a few minutes.

Great vlog Heidi bloody hell you make us laugh. Nothing worse than a nasty crack when your going under a bridge and a stiff one at the locks😮 we love hireboaters too as you say they bring fun to the canals😂

Watching your video again reminded me of a couple of things. The first is that I believe Leonardo da Vinci came up with the design of the M lock gates (well, it seems like he designed half of the stuff used in the modern world today!). The second was a trick for winding up/down very stiff paddles when there are two people, each with a windlass. Put the first windlass onto the winding mechanism as far as it will go, then (180 degrees round) put the second windlass on. Now both people can work a windlass each (usually from either side of the beam), swapping between windlasses as they go. I know that we (Mum and I, I think) have used this in the past, and once you have the hang of it even very stiff paddles are no obstacle.

Never ending, stunning scenery, while she goes from pub to beanery. Jaxx and Puddin on her team, that old Lister sure can steam! Up and down the best canals, surrounded by her many pals. So sorry to see Pudding gone, but included him in the poem anyway!

It's no longer connected to the canal, so it's basically a 1/4 mile long pond with a turning square in the middle and a very old loft bridge. It's nice to have swans and ducks just outside during the working day.
Keep sailing. It looks mostly fabulous.

Your last two (99 & 100) videos brought back some lovely memorys of our very first canal holiday. We went from Bunbury Locks (With Anglo Welsh) as far as Grindley Brook locks and back, only 4 nights 5 days, but it was wonderfull. We spent a night at Barbridge Junction and had a meal in the Joly Tar or Joly Jack Tar which nolonger exists, its a housing estate now. We spent the first night moored up just after Hurleston Locks on the Llangollen Canal. The second day we went as far as and moored up just passed Willymoor Locks and had a meal in Willymoor Lock Tavern, we spent night two there. Day three we went as far as Grindley Brook Locks, winded and headed back, This time we moored up just passed Wrenbury Mill and had a meal in the Cotten Arms. We went into Wrenbury for a walk and had a tea in the cafe/shop there, the only cafe/shop there at that time. Day four we went back to Barbridge Junction to spend our last night and we had a meal in The Old Barbridge Inn before heading back to Bunbury Locks the following day. Incidentaly, Swanley Bridge Marina didn't exist back then. Appologies for all the spelling mistakes, I never was any good at spelling!! Happy Sailing. Dave M.

Watching your video again reminded me of a couple of things. The first is that I believe Leonardo da Vinci came up with the design of the M lock gates (well, it seems like he designed half of the stuff used in the modern world today!). The second was a trick for winding up/down very stiff paddles when there are two people, each with a windlass. Put the first windlass onto the winding mechanism as far as it will go, then (180 degrees round) put the second windlass on. Now both people can work a windlass each (usually from either side of the beam), swapping between windlasses as they go. I know that we (Mum and I, I think) have used this in the past, and once you have the hang of it even very stiff paddles are no obstacle.
