- The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, live Norway June 16th 1974
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band were a Scottish rock band formed in Glasgow in 1972. Fronted by Alex Harvey accompanied by Zal Cleminson on guitar, bassist Chris Glen, keyboard player Hugh McKenna and drummer Ted McKenna, their music was a blend of glam rock, blues rock and hard rock, with cabaret elements. Their stage performances incorporated theatrical elements. The band were popular in continental Europe, and influential in Australia, most notably on AC/DC (particularly their singer Bon Scott) and on the young Nick Cave and his first band The Boys Next Door.

А зря!

@@ScottishTeeVee спасибо, друг а Зала я засек еще на альбоме 79 года

Люблю этих ребят, тоже шоталдцы, у меня на виниле все кроме первого и двух последних (это уже что-то не то)
What a fuck extraordinary great band!
This is the most weirdly cool, totally unexpected thing I accidentally clicked on and let play out. These guys rock!
Exactly, I had the same experience!
Dead daisies do a fabulous rendition of this song.
Agree. These guys were better than 99 percent of the other rock-groups. What a surprise for me, after 50 years...💖
Like toootaly
The guitar player with the makeup scares me. Like, I rather wake up in the middle of the night and see Satan at foot of my bed, than this guy standing there and smiling at me.
Zal is an absolute guitar monster.
I perfectly agree.......
A big influence on Guthrie Govan.@@mariocroisetiere4900
And clearly knows it but keeps the pyrotechnics under the perfect semblance of control. So pleased he was part of this band.
What a "Joker" of a guitarist...! He completely blew my innocent mind.😂
He is a nice of a person as he is a great guitar player.
What a performance. Zal Cleminson is such an underrated guitarist.
I'm glad you found and enjoyed this video
The crowd is staring at them like they are from another planet!😝
Found this by accident. Had seen Dead Daisies do a cover of it but this is theatrically special😂
Probably peaking on LSD!!
I remember the first time I saw this band was on ABC in concert in the 70's I was like Who the F are these guys.
Wonder Where Patti Smith or Bon Scott AC/DC got their influences?
Just watching Zal Cleminson was enough to freak me out.
naw just drunk Glasgow lads
@@steg-gd2jv Or musical geniuses fae Glesga.
They are from another planet.
It’s called Glasgow.
I clicked on this for no reason and it has changed my life, how can I have lived 60 years without knowing the utter genius of this band, with the amount of uneventful dire garbage we have today that tries to call it self music this is a blessing to me
But you'll need to join the official fan club in order to get your free hit of acid in the mail.
Agreed sir, talent is hear and just a click away ❤.
Boomer music is the greatest ❤✌️.
I concur.
Same hee hee here! lol
thats right. I am sixty two,and I had heard of them but not realized how good they were and how many other musicians they influenced
Alex Harvey was punk before anyone knew what punk was.
New york dolls 1972

CHECK THEM OUT
THIS BAND WAS VERY UNDER RATED
GOOD EAR😊
These guys are WAY too good of musicians to be punk rockers.
They were EVERYTHING before anyone knew what punk was. Insane.
2/2024. Wooohooo ! That Mime Can Play Some Geeettaarr !!! Scotts from Scotland for Crying Out Loud !! I Just Can't Believe I've Never Heard of Them Back Then. I was around 11 and Started growing up with Led-Zeppelin { Vinyl } Aerosmith { 8-Track } Blue Oyster Cult { 8-Track - Again, in fact I was listening to Blue Oyster Cults "Godzilla" { Bought the Vinyl } when the song ended I scrolled down to see if any other BOC tunes would show up and that's when I saw this and I'm like... This looks like Old Time Rock & Roll !!
The only difference these men could play their instruments 🎸 ❤
Man, the tone Zal Cleminson has on his guitar is awesome.
Loved his sound, his chops and even the "mime" look. Cleminson was what a rock guitarist of that era was all about.
It's just Gibson humbuckers smashing thru a 100 watt Marshall w/ a stack of Celestion greenback speakers. Just simple and effective. Balls to the wall rock.
@BCTGuitarPlayer The tone coming from that setup is ridiculous. I might be mistaken, but the pickups looked like P90's to me.
This is one of the best videos i've ever seen
YES Sir! Alex. The crowd had been Harvey'd ... Did they know how fortunate they had been??
Maybe some decades later.@@SpireUtd
Alex and Zal scared the hell out of that crowd. The looks on some of their faces... A beautiful thing. R.I.P. Alex, Hugh and Ted.
Lucky enough to have seen him a few times. No one else like him and such a tight band; but menace, theatre, cartoon, circus, threat and balls out commitment to his own vision were totally his thing. Fabulous.
The way they stare down the crowd is WILD!
Bordering on a couple of felines staring down prey 🤣😋🤘🏽
Threatening and Menacing!
True story- me and my mate Stevie were busking on Sauchiehall St (Glasgow) c.2000. A guy in his late 50's stops and watches us until we finished the song. He goes, 'Have you heard of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band?' I say 'I think I've heard of them but a bit before my time' he goes 'Well I was the drummer in the SAHB and you guys need rhythm' and he chucks a pound in the guitar case and walks off.
(Edit- just found out that he was Ted McKenna and he passed away in 2019. RIP big man).
What a gift that was from Ted to you and your friend. He was offering good advice after taking the time to really listen to ya'll. Class Act, that Ted McKenna! R.I.P.
Without a doubt the single biggest influence on a fledgling AC/DC, with three Scots in the band and many more behind the scenes, they were watching.
1:21 High, Voltage, Rock n Roll.
Nailed it. Came to say exactly that. You're not telling me that Bonn didn't model his whole act around Alex. I think Ian Dury was watching too!
Correct. All day long. Musically lean as fuck with not one ounce of fat in sight.
Typical scot nationalist bull crap. Biggest influence on Bon and Angus, little Richard and Chuck Berry by their own words. And if Bon copied anyone's mannerisms it was the lead singer of the easybeats
0:00 Yep.
That crowd were not ready for Alex Harvey. If only they knew that virtually every band that followed owed something to this truly original band. They changed the direction of Rock forever.
With no hyperbole whatsoever.
I was sorely tempted to say I didn't know they played at the Hyper Bole, and clearly I gave in. But yeah, totally agree.@@sgt.thundercok4704
No Bon Scott or AC/DC without Alex
Agreed.@@TURBSBU
best version of midnight moses.. rough and edgy.. much better in my humble opinion than the lp version
The absolutely most powerful and genuine 1970’s performance I’ve seen. Alex Harvey is part Brian Johnson, part Harvey Keitel. And all A Clockwork Orange theatrics in one
Never, never will there be such a performance -
One of the best unknown bands of our time! Thank you for posting!
First band I ever saw live - and it was in 1974. Scared the crap out of me. Was in shock for a week.
Couple of years later they were back & I helped the roadies off load the gear & build the polystyrene wall that Alex smashes thru during the set - & got a backstage pass & met the band.
Monumental gig.
Great memories, you very lucky man🍻
Great story Steve, that must've been great👍
I'm green with envy but super glad for you! Whay a memory!!
The guitarists facials with the notes is hilarious, quite the showman
I don’t think AC/DC would exist without the SAHB. So filthy, so loud, so in your face. Awesome.
Don't you just miss this great band?
YES!
Punk long before punk emerged. What a band!
Nothing Punk going on here. More like The Doors on bad acid.
Mick Jones says Godfather Of Punk
@@exploratorORRR And he was right.
@@exploratorORRR No, that would be Lou Reed.
Totally agree.
Midnight Moses - wot a fantastic riff!! I saw these bad boys in Leeds in '73, my god they were loud I was deaf for 2 days, but got to shake hands with Zal and I haven't washed it since!
What a fantastic time to see the band, wish I had been there with ya. Thanks for watching and commenting
Very cool!
Nor would I! I love that crazy Mime, Lol!
GROOOOOOVY!
Incredible band - way ahead of their time.
Thank you for this.
Not quite sure in what way they were "ahead of their time" but SAHB were a great band, especially on stage.
Sensational?
The Faith Healer is one of my favourites , this is a great clip , Zal Cleminson was doing that style way before Buckethead .
EXACTLY!!!!!
Harvey exudes huge, brazen, Glaswegian charisma, what a frontman, whilst Zal delivers searing guitar, through his enigmatically sinister mime alter ego, ably backed by a thumping rhythm section, SAHB blazed the trail for many future acts…I just wish I had been a bit older when they were at their peak, seeing them live would have been an amazing experience.
These guys are ahead of their time, behind on their rent and right on time all at once...thx Scottish Tee Vee!
None of your million-dollar Gucci-lamborghini shit can bring you THIS attitude! Fucking beat this!
Hell Yeah!
Saw them countless times , great nights , beer and rock , Alex was a real showman , should have been bigger
Alex was the Jerry Sadowitz of rock
@@robertmchattieI get what yer saying mate I saw jerry Sadowitz at the pavilion few year back and he was brilliant he tortured Harvey Weinstein 😅😅😅
I've seen some of the greatest live acts ever but SAHB are in the top 5. Saw them 3 times at their peak. Mindblowing.
This is brilliant, it’s a travesty that so little footage of S.A.H.B. exists
Not a rotary dial phone in sight. Everyone just enjoying the moment.
this joke fell deaf on many,,... but not i
I think I spotted on etrimphone though. I hate today's streets full of zombies on't phone.
They left their trim phones at home.
LOL!
Fearless, entertaining, theatrical, spontaneous, innovative and spellbinding. a rare gem. thank you for bringing this to the world.
Great musicians + crappy singer = failure
sensational ;
@@breakmylegs7294 he can actually sing. cross between rockabilly and chuck berry. this was definately something different though. only could work live. i would love to see a few dozen more unique performanances like this. they are rare.
@@MR.HandyANDY I didn't like his voice at first, but I was drawn back to the songs, and little by little I started to like it more and more
One of the best scottish bands ever never see such origionality again 🏴☠️
The memories haven't dulled the mind yungun ! A special and so talented band I only wish Alex hadn't departed so early ! A diamond uncut but what a showmen !
True
This was off the hook…a little Clockwork Orange mixed with counterculture poetry & skillfully weaved music to bemuse & amuse…next level.
The date is not far off from Clockwork ether..touch off glam.
What a riot. Too heavy for this crowd! Love it!
I didn’t know these guys till 2 weeks ago , I’m 58 and I can’t believe I never heard of this band , talk about A GUITAR 🎸 GOD bass drums lead singer ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT , I’m now a fan checking all their stuff out and I must say this is the.best 14 minutes of live ROCK AND ROLL I’ve EVER heard ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT on all fronts
timelines will converge is the way i understood it.. we are experiencing a convergence and soon many will awaken. truth will show itself and everything they have planned will have an opposite effect we are in the final stages people.. a jubilee soon it will be
SAHB was 1976 in Ruisrock (Turku, Finland) and I was there because of SAHB. Still after these years I remember how good they were on stage. I've been a Alex Harvey fan since I bought "Framed" LP in 1972 !
The Norwegians look bewildered but they always do
🤣
Thank you 😂😂😂
Zal Cleminson certainly had a freaky look. Especially those that hate clowns. Their best song imo
it's NOT a clown, it's a pierrot
@tynebar which is a clown)
Клеминсон засветился помню на двух пластинках Назарета 79 и 80 года.
Я не прав?
Saw Zal in Nazareth
Leave our Alistair alone guitar legend of the 70s meet them many times on and off stage. Rip Alex Ted Hugh n Chris
Wow!!!!!! I just clicked on this I don’t know who these guys are never heard of them, but my God, this is probably the best live performance I’ve ever seen in my life !!!!!!
They were a lot of fun live. Caught them when they opened for Tull in the 70s. Tull had to work hard to catch up.
I think gang bang was one of their bigger songs in the states. They are great. The album version of this song is great.
then you must be very young, or have hardly seen any live performances. Or...your taste is s**t @@tropicaldoodad
Wow!! Soooo good!! Now we know where Kiss got their idea for makeup 😂
The SAHB were best live band ever.👌Alex didn’t play guitar live that often So this is a real treat👍🍺❤
When Framed ! was released in 1973 Midnight Moses exploded my world as a 12 y.o. living in NE Ohio. Cleveland radio station WMMS was playing album-sides and were 'getting into TSAHB ! It was BY FAR the coolest song on the radio, even with the 'heavy hitters' like Sabbath, Zep, The Stones etc. It was their surrealistic take on R & R along with Zal's searing lead guitar! I caught-on along with most every heavy headed rock fan in the area. Alex Harvey went on to super stardom but always mentioned the early burgeoning fan base in Cleveland Ohio !
Cleveland was in fact HUGE into these guys!! Right on brother!! Ridiculous!!
For Sure " The Most Unknown (underrated) Rock Band in History " !@@user-cn2jf8jj1v
Yep one of the greatest bands to be played often back in the 70's on WMMS.ZAL went on to play with Nazareth. Chris Glenn went on to play with Michael Schenker, among others as well. One of the most fabulous bands ever that nobody knew.
Man, what a beast of a song.
How did I miss these guys back in the day? I was always looking for new and obscure talent. Maybe I was too enamored with zeppelin, king crimson, montrose etc. Lots of killer talent in those days. Anyway these guys a great. I keep watching. Thanks for posting.
I first saw them on either 'Don Kirshner's Rock Concert' or 'In Concert' on U.S. tv sometime in 1973. I was instantly hooked. Over the next few years I saw them live at the Whisky, three nights in a row at the Roxy and then at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. The first night at the Roxy, Alex spray painted 'Vambo Rool' on the red curtains behind the stage. I remember going there for a show many months later and it was still there. Cleminson was the show for me. Killer guitar chops along with the makeup and his schtick was unforgettable.
Real talent. Total disregard for commercialism! Albums "Impossible Dream" and " Tomorrow Belongs to Me" are indeed Sensational!
Such underrated artists.
The men were legends.
I wish I knew about Alex Harvey when he was at his peak. I was living in the country in Australia at the time and radio was limited and TV pretty much non existent. Nearest record store was about 8 hours drive away. Thank god for youtube!
Thanks for watching and commenting Michael
@michealjackson2838 He had more than one "peak". Along with other vocalists like Chris Farlowe & Victor Brox were making legendary music in the R&B /Northern Soul clubs throughout the UK & Europe
My god the true honesty of just being rocknroll and how we have now lost this reall honesty of music. I love this true rock and roll honesty. This man is pure rocknroll oh my god! There is no one like this anymore!
Reminds me of the punch of Dr. Feelgood and theatrics of many at the time. For some reason it made me think how 'fake' Ray Davies always looked to me. Like he was acting. Alex Harvey is really selling this.
I thank God that I saw the band twice when I was but a boy at the Glasgow Apollo - the "tomorrow belongs to me" tour and then one of the Christmas shows 🙏
Not too shabby for a 50 year old recording !! A band never surpassed ! I was fortunate enough to have seen them about 6 times live & at Reading Festival & London Palladium with the Tiller Girls doing "Dancing Cheek to Cheek" !! Sadly missed !
That was the night that turned into a day that turned into another night thank God I was only there two days
Still got my vinyl, purchased inthe 70s, brill band. Luv Zals facial expressions and his wicked leads.
Me too, all vinyls of SAHB.

Just incredible. Never heard of these guys before and I must’ve watched this video five times today.

Alex H was the primo mad man of rock; great performer; great writer. It will be the the eternal shame to the legacy of Bob Harris that he was so dismissinve on the SAHB. Live hard ,die young have e good looking corpse.
Discovered these gentlemen, and I use this term loosely, back in 1976. Amazing band & extremely entertaining.
75 years old. And this is where it’s at
An amazing band. Great musicians with a great sense of humor.
Glad i clicked here❤
This guys kill it💯💥👍

Sheet this is amazing. I read ages ago Bon was a fan of the singer, now I get the clear influence. Not to mention the entire band is utterly flawless.
Bon took a lot of his cues from Alex.
Same boogie style and delivery as The Jack. Not that AC/DC were copying, but they had their influences, and I read that Bon was a fan of Alex.
Early Nick Cave too.
Zal's guitar playing was impressively expressive.....Totally, a unique mesmerising sound..........****The very best Circus Music Clown in Town****
Norway bros weren't ready for this :)
Used to often see them when the whole band rented a house in my street in north London around 74 /75 ,had a chat with Chris Glenn one day. l think they wanted to be near places like the Rainbow at the time as they were riding high in the charts .Still have a few of their albums ."Next " is my favourite .
Alex's face when he pulls out those tights is priceless,You will never see anything more Rock and Roll than this .❤❤❤❤❤
I still have the Impossible Dream album I bought in 74. Whenever I tell my friends who have never heard of them to listen to their music...…..they think I'm crazy , so I play their stuff on my own
I had one of their s albums in 74 but this is better then I ever remember the song next was what remember seeing this video is sublime
Ahhh SAHB at their finest with Zal C and the Mad MacKenna Bros on Top Form.
Saw this band in Wolverhampton in 70s loved them then and love them now ❤❤
I watch this over and over, and I'm mesmerized each time. The tone from that SG with P90's is wild. This band somehow slipped under my radar, but I'm glad I finally was introduced... legendary! Thanks for sharing this to UA-cam.
I am so glad you enjoyed this fantastic video. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
I've never heard of this band until this video.. I can't stop listening to this 1st song.. I love watching and hearing these guys perform it!!! The 2nd song is a great performance as well! I just like the 1st dong better, it ROCKS! 🤘
I'm glad you enjoyed it🙂
They were warming up Jethro Tull in Jackson, Mississippi in 1975. The three of us weren't from that area, and we got lost driving to the concert. They houselights had just gone up, and they were cleaning up the fallen bricks of a faux brick wall that I guess Alex jumped through. Watching this, I really regret missing them.
A shame you missed SAHB. I guess Jethro Tull were popular in Jackson, as I see they played two nights at the Coliseum on the 2rd and 25th August. I hope you saw many other bands there.
They were awesome!
Wow!! Absolutely amazing performance!!Love it!!The energy is off the charts!!
If you take Sweet and multiply by 10 times, you get this fantastic circus.
Or perhaps Slade, which was another great, humour band.
I'm totally impressed. This is THEATRE on another level.

Chris Glenn & Ted McKenna also played with MSG.
What is MSG ? @@hamishanderson6738
Awesome band
Your Mum loved this!
What's not to love about this band? I've always considered Alex as much an actor as a singer, and the theatrical element (a key factor in everything they did), combined with their instrumental prowess, comes into full effect here, interestingly contrasted with their down-to-earth professionalism, an example of which is shown in the first 10 seconds of the video, with Zal calmly concentrating on his tuning, before slipping into his 'evil mime' role.
A killer outfit if ever there was one, we were lucky to have them around. Greetings from the Netherlands.
Thank you for watching and commenting Carl. Good to hear from a viewer in the Netherlands
Thanks, always glad to share some insights. Much like, say, Stone the Crows, Vinegar Joe or Frankie Miller, the SAHB never really made it on the Continent, whereas Showaddywaddy, Racey (I was shocked to read both are still terrorizing the planet) and the Bay City Rollers actually did. So much for the concept of a just God. Thankfully we have your YT videos where Alex an' the bhoys are forever young, energetic and just **** good musicians.@@ScottishTeeVee
Saw SAHB in Lund, Sweden 1976 and it was one of the best live shows I have ever seen. Great band. Zal Cleminson played w Nazareth after SAHB.

I graduated in 75 already an accomplished guitarist and yet this is the first I've heard of these guys? I don't understand how that's possible! All I can figure is management wasn't able to get them gigs in the States. 🤷♂️ Kind of a circus punk rockin' blues band. What a gas to see them here, now. I only wish there were more.
