I'm Brad, I too suffer from aphasia. After a aneurysm and a stroke, on 11-11-11. And I must say that seeing your videos pushed me to strive to the next step. Kept me, going to better myself, and I am doing great. I got done with speech therapy, I got my license. And now I got my kids back, and I got a place with them. There are some negative parts. I have a temper that I'm working through. My math skills are horrible. But all around, life is awesome, and your videos let me know that there are others out there that know what I'm going through. The idea of just sitting around normal and then suddenly losing so much cognitive ability is honestly terrifying to me. You are amazingly brave for being able to face this with so much optimism. I don't think I could do it. You're making amazing progress, and I hope one day that you make a 100% recovery.

It was so helpful for my students to see your story and it was easier to identify with someone closer to their age. These videos always tug at the heart strings for me when watching. It is clear to see the determination and effort you have put in over 6 years. You are right that it is important to always stay positive but also to recognise there will probably also be many tough days and it is a testament not only to you but all of those around you and your strength of character that you are coming through so well. For someone that knew you pre-stroke, it is incredibly humbling. It's also clear to see the Sarah I got to know those years ago still shines through in your character which is wonderful. One thing I do find interesting with your speech is how it can go in fits and spurts sometimes - do you understand what causes this? Keep going strong, will always be rooting for you in whatever you do xx

I had never heard of this affliction. I've only watching a couple of these videos about Sarah, and I'm absolutely amazed. Sarah, if you ever see this comment - you're absolutely brilliant, and utterly gorgeous. So, from the few videos I've watched, all communication is set back to basically square one. Reading, writing, speaking... it's all affected. I'm sorry if this is a stupid question: what about other muscle memory? For instance, does using a computer/keyboard become difficult? I ask because I saw a video that writing the words helped her respond; so I wondered if typing would have the same effect, or slightly different, since the neural pathways for that fine-motor-movement are slightly different (that's a complete guess and conjecture). Just a curiosity, would this affect signing (as in sign language, not a typo)? Does this affect other languages. There was a study recently that mentioned dyslexia is language dependant-albeit roman alphabet vs chinese characters. Now that I clarified signing, does it affect singing?
+Ryan Jackson I'd imagine so. The same part of the brain that reads and comprehends sign language, is the part responsible for hearing and comprehending spoken language.
As for the singing, aphasia can affect singing, but singing is affected differently than speech. In some cases singing is also used as a therapy method to improve speech.
Hey Sarah, just watched your episode on the undateables. Great to see the improvements you've made. I find the brains ability to recover fascinating. I do wonder, from an evolutionary point of view, why the process is so lengthy. Are there any advances in science that speed up the repair process?
She is doing awesome~! I had a brain injury in Jan of 2009 that I am still dealing with some what( I forget nouns, and what i was doing every so often). And I was thinking that perhaps cognitively trying to add Melody and rhythm to your speech might allow it to be helped by the part of the brain responsible for music on the opposite hemisphere so that you could achieve even more fluency than the impressive amount you've already recovered. I also have a question regarding that same line of thought: was your ability to read music preserved assuming that's something you learned previously?
Hi Sarah , happy to see post another video. Having had a similar stroke a year after you , I've been following your progress and improvement !! Happy to hear you're keeping so busy. I think the jewellery idea is fantastic ! And it's great to hear your goal of owning your own house. I've often been curious .... When you had your stroke , how long did the doctor's wait before treating you ? ( Give you any clot busting drugs ? ). I got to the hospital within 30 mins , but they waited another 2 1/2 hours before doing anything for me. My speech and writing were gone completely during that time. Just as I was about to have the drug to break up the clot , a doctor performed something called a Trendelenberg technique. He lowered the head of my bed and raised my feet. It somehow changes the blood pressure , and with 45 seconds , I was talking ( kind of ). I've also been curious why I was fortunate to get virtually all of my speech and writing back , even though it sounds like our strokes hit the same area with the same effects. I wondered if it was even explained to you why some people are left with more damage than others ? Anyway , it was great seeing another video from you and seeing how much improvement you're continuing to make. Take care. Cheers from Calgary Canada : )
Hi, I just came across this video today somehow. My stroke was 4 years ago. Though mild, it shut off the right side of my brain, my body's left side, for almost a week. I don't have the aphasia as much now, but the emotional and cognitive side of me is still a mess. No idea what to fix, or how But thank you for this piece of hope.
Sarah, have you tried music therapy? there have been SO MANY advances and things doctors never thought possible happening with music therapy! Music accesses more areas of the brain and people with speech problems associated with the stroke and other trauma have had tremendous success using music therapy. Look up Gabby Lee Gifford, she was shot, the bullet passed through her Broca's Area (language and speech) of the brain. She has had extreme success using music therapy! it is so new, I didn't know if you had heard of it. Doctors/Researchers are just beginning to understand and the possibilities are endless with this new understanding the brain! but you have come so far, and you're such a lovely young woman! things are only to get better in your future and with the technology advancing you should feel hopeful for even further progress! Please look into it! Don't ever stop searching for new ways to help you improve and don't ever stop trying to achieve your goals! Best of luck to you!

When I was 14, I had a stroke during brain surgery. And I have aphasia, too. Now, I’m 16 years old.

I've also been curious why I was fortunate to get virtually all of my speech and writing back , even though it sounds like our strokes hit the same area with the same effects. I wondered if it was even explained to you why some people are left with more damage than others ? Hi, I just came across this video today somehow. My stroke was 4 years ago. Though mild, it shut off the right side of my brain, my body's left side, for almost a week. I don't have the aphasia as much now, but the emotional and cognitive side of me is still a mess. No idea what to fix, or how But thank you for this piece of hope.

Sarah, have you tried music therapy? there have been SO MANY advances and things doctors never thought possible happening with music therapy! Music accesses more areas of the brain and people with speech problems associated with the stroke and other trauma have had tremendous success using music therapy. Look up Gabby Lee Gifford, she was shot, the bullet passed through her Broca's Area (language and speech) of the brain. She has had extreme success using music therapy! it is so new, I didn't know if you had heard of it. Doctors/Researchers are just beginning to understand and the possibilities are endless with this new understanding the brain! but you have come so far, and you're such a lovely young woman! things are only to get better in your future and with the technology advancing you should feel hopeful for even further progress! Please look into it! Don't ever stop searching for new ways to help you improve and don't ever stop trying to achieve your goals! Best of luck to you!

Props to these people for sticking with it. If I was that unlucky I would probably end up killing myself. Gotta learn to be more thankful everyday.
What apps do you recommend? My client uses talk now, is there anything else that is helpful?
+Mirtza Griffin it really depends on their aphasia - Proloquo2go was one Sarah used at first and Constant Therapy is great - there are hundreds now!
