- I'm Laura! I'm 27. Five years ago, I was hit by a drunk driver. I had a stroke. I have aphasia.
My friends don't know how to talk to me. Here are some tips.
11/24/13 - The website for the National Aphasia Association is www.aphasia.org. NOT ".com".
11/28/12 - To use this video in a commercial player or in broadcasts, please email licensing@storyful.com
I would rather talk to you than most other people I encounter in a day. You're amazing.
I love that she still kept her sense of humor too. She seems like a really great person to know. ^_^
You are wonderful. Thanks for explaining. I listened carefully. I will try to remember this when talking with people with stroke.
Sweet Jesus... you are an angel.
Laura! You are an inspiration! My mother has lived with very severe aphasia for 13+ years and she gets better all the time. Aphasia is a very hard condition to live with and you are an inspiration to people with aphasia (and their families) I wish you the best for a continued recovery! And I hope that you make more videos!
Laura, you're beyond adorable, I'm from Romania so in other words the whole world loves you, keep up the good work, you're inspirational beyond words.
You are a beautiful, and courageous woman for doing this video. I love that you took a serious topic and put a comedic spin on it.
Great video Laura. I've been through this because of a Traumatic Brain Injury. It is so frustrating when people talk over you as if you're not there, isn't it? Feel free to connect with me. It took me a few years to get through it, and now it only affects me when I'm tired. Keep making the videos. :)
No car hit my car but I survived a major stroke, I type real slow ( one finger), walk w/ a walker and now having to move in at own place. Love your message! People still do that to me....I talk / pronounce everything slow...guess I need to speed it up? It is nice to see a familiar things.
Well done, Laura! I'm sure this will benefit many folks.
Laura you are a beautiful woman inside and out. I wish nothing but happiness and laughter in your future. You can teach kindness and warmth to so many people. God bless
Great video. Thanks for sharing. I remember these tips after my grandma had a stroke. Keep up the good work.
LOVE this video. What a simple, hilarious way to educate people on how to interact with people who have aphasia.
Bravo!
Very inspirational. Thank you for sharing this.
I'm really glad I watched this! It opened my eyes to something I've never witnessed or heard about! :) Thank you for sharing, and I'll definitely put your advice to good use!
Great video, Laura. What a wonderful way to spread awareness.
I like your video, my step-father had a stroke years ago so I'm familiar with aphasia. It is very nice to see you share communication tips for those who don't know how to communicate respectfully with someone who has aphasia. :-)
I'm totally awestruck by this video. You're a beautiful human.
What an amazing person you are, Laura! So positive and cheerful! I can't imagine anyone not wanting to take the time to get to know you.
You're adorable! It's certainly always inspiring to see someone who makes the most of their situation, especially when they can help others and add some humor to it. I wish you the best in all you do!
Good god this women is gorgeous! Some people just don't know how to act around people that aren't the socially accepted "norm". But they need to learn quick.
Such a great video! I have a patient at work with aphasia and he can only say yes, no, or ok. He gets very frustrated when he has trouble communicating, but our office has no problem working with him. Glad to see you still have a great sense of humor :)
Thank you so much this video! I work in a rehabilitation hospital so encounter stroke patients all the time. I'm always wanting to make people feel as comfortable as possible. What a wonderful video. I love your light hearted nature. You are sweet and have an amazing spirit. I can't wait to share this with the therapists at work!
*YOU ARE AWESOME AND ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL LADIES I HAVE EVER SEEN ON UA-cam!!! (LIKED AND SUBSCRIBED)*
Intelligent and creative and FABULOUS tips that we would all be better for following in conversations with EVERYONE . . . thanks Laura! xxoo
Well I'm glad aphasia can never take away your laugh :)
That was awesome Laura, The same goes for people with many other disabilities too, this is a great message to put out there and I love the way you do it in a fun way.
Love the video. You are teaching a subject that people need to know about whether they want to or not. I have a dysfunction in one ear that if I try and hear more than one conversation in a quiet place, it all get jumbled, so the part about a quiet place really hits home.
i found this incredibly enjoyable to listen to, i love the way you talk, it's really soothing
Dear Laura - this is great advice in general! Thanks for sharing your sense of humor. This is a wonderful project.
Thank you for sharing your awesome video Laura! :) I hope many people see this and remember your tips!! I noticed many SLP friends of mine posting and re-posting this today!
Thanks for sharing. I am a neuropsychologist and I have shared the video with my colleagues and patients. You have made a wonderful contribution!
Very eye opening. Thank you for sharing, Laura. I hope that people will take a cue from this video and speak to you and others with such injuries in a way that is comfortable and respectful to you.
Laura, you are awesome! I loved this video and could not take my eyes off of you. You are beautiful. Your smile and sense of humor made me smile. I will definitely remember the lessons you taught me on youtube today. God bless.
So glad to have run across this! Glad you are doing well, and thanks for the smiles!
You are instantly my favorite person on the internet.
Laura, your suggestions are basically how I get the point across to high school classes. Not by talking down to them, but by being slow, concise, and by posing straight forward questions in a quiet classroom.
btw: I become aphasic during severe migraines.
Laura, thank you! I understand just what you are saying and how it feels. I didn't have a stroke but a tumor. You're video has helped me a great deal! I don't know you but I can guess that you are a strong and wonderful woman. We can all see how beautiful you are!
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. The awareness you raised for how aphasia can be properly accommodated in social interactions was very enlightening! Keep up the great work!
Laura you very beautiful woman and thank for taking the time to share your and story on Aphasia. Hope to see more video from you. Stay strong.
You seem like a wonderfully charming, sweet person. I'm really glad you put this out there to help others, and create some catharsis for yourself.
Greetings from Sweden!
My dad had a stroke a few years ago and nowadays speaks barely at all. He avoids talking because he has difficulty making himself understood. I think it's most because people do not know how to talk to him. Ultimately, this means that he isolates himself more and more.
However, I can talk to him and I do exactly as you say! :)
Thanks for a perfect instruction video!
God Jul och Gott Nytt År! (Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!)
Laura, thank you for the awesome video. Those tips are useful in talking to everyone. You seem like a very genuine person, and I bet you are loved by everyone around you. Wish you all the best that life has to offer.
*hugs* keep up your progress dear! I currently work with aphasia clients and seeing you so strong is very inspirational!
I've never met anyone with Aphasia, but I am glad I saw this video as it made me think. Thank you for informing me!
thank you so much for your video! I had a stroke at 21 in 2002. I had some really bad aphasia back then. I can totally relate. I only have a mild case of it now. God bless you dear! I hope your speech gets a little bit better each day. Mine did. It so did take a while
Carlos from Brazil here. Awesome video. Liked and subscribed. Thank you.
Very proud of you. I am almost 28 and seeing that we are almost the same age and what you are able to do gives me strength and courage. You are awesome Laura. Now I will know how to talk to a person with Aphasia. Thank you very much :) Don't ever give up :)
you are a wonderful and strong woman, you deserve a lot of admiration. all the best for you.
Thanks for making this! you seem so strong and sound so sweet! love your laugh by the way! take care !
I would totally go out with you. Beautiful, and smart. People care so much about unimportant things. They way you talk doesn't change anything about who you are.
This made me really happy thanks miss
Thank you Laura, you're amazing!
Hello Laura, way back I said I used to watch your video. I'm still getting better. Count your blessings and keep on going.
This is great! I think this works equally well for any serious speech impediment, I've had Parkinson's Disease for 18+ years, and it affects my speech regularly. I've done the "no, no, yes, no, yes" routine quite a few times, people's confused reactions always make me smile. Try just answering "yes" or "no" to multiple choice questions, works quite well too!
Take care!
She was so adorable, I want to give her a big hug :)
You are a sweetheart. May you keep all your good friends and the joy in your life!
Humor aside, sometimes people really don't know how to connect with those with special needs. I love this and think it is important for all of us to know:) Thank you Laura.
Love the video! I had my first stroke in 2011 and with the help of my speech therapist, I am 95% recovered. Only some lingering problems. Grateful to still be here.
That is amazing! Hope you’re doing okay.
How bad was your stroke? Did u talk right away
You are so fucking awesome. My wife had a stroke and she sent me your video. Thank you very much for sharing these tips and a little bit of your experience.
I fucking hate drunk drivers. You're a very strong woman.
So beautiful, this woman and her smile. Thank you for the tips ;)
i'm finally teaching family and friends understand how they need to speak to me, thanks
Aww, Laura, this is such a great video !
Thank you for sharing this! I am going to share with my classmates, we're in nursing school during Neuro clinical right now. These are helpful tips!
annndddddd I think I am in love
Awesome video!! Thanks for the very helpful tips :D
i love your wittiness laura! nice video! well done!
Thank you! I really enjoyed this.
This might be inaccurate, but it feels like I've learned the basics to a new dialect of English.
Lastly, if I ever do meet someone with aphasia, I know this video will help us to have a good conversation.
Thanks again!
Thank you for posting this Laura!
You are so incredibly beautiful, Laura. Love to see people like you who are able to remain in good spirits and laugh in the face of undeniable hardship. Your humor and personality are contagious. Thanks for making my day!
What a wonderful sense of humor you have! Great video and great tips.
A very helpful video, Laura! These are good suggestions for clear communication for everyone! And a beautiful smile to boot :)
Great video. Loving the humour. Brilliant teaching resource for me (psych teacher) while also informing my students on how to speak to people who have had a stroke. Thanks :-)

I want to give you the biggest hug and never let you go :) Awww thank you for this video
Dear Laura, thank you for sharing this. May all your hopes and dreams be realized. Your courage is inspirational. Thank you, very much.
Aw, bless her heart. She is beautiful!
Thanks for the tips! I had never heard of aphasia before!
Great video Laura. I applaud your courage and your spirit. Wouldn't it be great if EVERYONE could just slow down a little, be more tolerant and understanding of people with communication issues? You're a beautiful girl Laura, inside and out.
Thanks Laura, great advice and a lovely and humorous vid. I wish you all the best for the future.
Laura, thank you for sharing this video. Also, thank you for the courage, Bear Hug.
... this young woman's experiences with conversations are far more challenging than mine, yet we share many of them ... particularly too-many-things-at-once-and in-a-constant-stream
... a very well produced and acted segment.
Girl you brought me to tears cuz I had a stroke 8 years ago I was completely trapped in my head couldn't walk talk or really anything I have recovered a great deal to mercy of God people do not understand unless they have went through this may you find peace love and happiness and hopefully you can recover most of your abilities in time like I have
Wow. So u have recovered ? My brother had a stroke 5 months ago. He can't really talk. He can walk with a brace and walker. But hes still paralyzed on his right side.
How are u now 5 years later
Thank you for this wonderful video. I am a little hard of hearing and I have a hard time understanding some people. Especially in loud places. Hopefully your lovely humor and patience will help people understand. Blessings to you... and to your friends for helping you create this vid.
Stay strong Laura! I have much respect for you!
Hi Laura! It's nice to meet you. I hope that people will learn from your video. I want to smack people who speak to those with different abilities & challenges like they're stupid! Or worse, yell at them. Thank you for putting this video out there, LOTS of people will see it now, it's on Upworthy!
All the best to you!
Or talk to them like naughty children. I am on the autism spectrum and get this constantly, as well as the talking over me, loud, slow stuff as if my intelligence is affected. It isn't!
How can anyone not like this after watching it? Awsome!
What a great attitude you have, and such a beautiful smile!
I think I speak for everyone when I say you are absolutely lovable and simply amazing. I have periodic aphasia due to and IUD but am quite recovered now. I take anti seizure meds and live a functioning life despite another TBI last year. I have fully recovered from that and am doing we. Those are exceptionally challenging times to get through and you are an incredible inspiration!!!❤️
An iud ??
Can u explain more or tell more of that story?
so well done! Love your sense of humor and your bright smile!
Hiya Laura. Great video! I do not have Aphasia, and I still want people to do these with me. Thanks for posting. Also... HAPPY HOLIDAYS! :)
Great advice. Would love to see this kind of real-world teaching done in all medical disciplines.
The song at 2:00 was DJ Fresh - Louder (Doctor P & Flux Pavilion Remix). What a banger.
You are a amazing human being, and more reasons to for me to hate drunk driving.
Thank you for these wonderful tips :D
Hi Laura. When I saw your face on this vid and a smile light up. That's Laura. Exclamation point.
I'm still doing better and talk really well now. Generally very well. Bit won't let me drive yet. Been two years
Awesome video, Laura!
Thanks for this great job. You go!!
Love love love this!!!! Keep spreading awareness :)
Beautiful woman... beautiful sense of humour! GREAT message! Shared!
