These electronic parking brakes use $400 USD worth of equipment replacing a $20 cable. If the system needs repair off warrantee, you are out several hundred dollars.

    • @Tk3997
      @Tk3997 3 місяці тому

But not really if the car had rear discs.
These systems replace a 20 dollar cable AND a number of additional components on the rear brakes themselves up to and including an entire additional drum brake within the rotor hat. The additional expense is actually pretty minor because a cheap motor on the back of a basic screw drive is not in fact expensive at all. It's also simple as hell and in reality very rarely never fails because it's only ever used quite intermittently and never under heavy load. Even repair costs aren't that different because in many cases most of the cost is going to be in labor anyway.
In return for this minor increase in expense you gain:
-A parking brake that always works first and foremost. I can't tell you how many cars with manual parking brakes I come across that can't hold the vehicle on anything but basically flat ground because they're never adjusted or serviced. Because doing so would require paying for probably at least half to an hour of labor. E-brakes however will always wind down as far as needed to apply full pressure without any need of adjustment or developing any sort of slack in cabling, when they're engaged that car isn't going anywhere and there's no need to ever pay for adjustment.
-This also applies to their use as an emergency brake, since they will apply full rear braking power when engaged
-Automatic application when the car is placed into park. Which we all know we SHOULD do, but lets face it most of us don't
-Anti-rollaway features that will automatically stop the car if starts to roll
They aren't really much harder to service either. Assuming you have a scan tool and know the menus for that vehicle they add maybe 30 seconds to set to maintenance mode and then they wind back manually. Some claim you NEED this tool and cite it as a point against them, but this is a lie. If you lack the tool you can simply disconnect the motor from the rear of the drive and then wind them back. Depending on the exact model this might literally only add like two or three minutes per side.

I have been in three different cars without manual handbrakes... They wobble a lot!!! On flat surface they feel like a manual brake car without the brake on!
It is not just the "fun" it is about comfort, security and simplicity. These new things break alot easier, and there are some emergencies that need manual things. NOT just brakes, but door locks too. (Even though many cars don't have manual locks for each door, two of those new cars I rode in had them! But still the worst part about some cars today is that one open door unlocks all four and you can't lock them when one is open! You could do all that and more with central locking, and some remote keycars can at least do that!) But I have read that the trend is declining. Lets hope we can bring individual car locks that can also run on central locking back, opening one door, locking doors when one is open. The last central locking of a key lock car we had could even function just on battery! The important part is to complain and refuse to buy stuff we dont want or need. There are more buttons inside cars again, no dangerous need to look at a touch screen for heating or radio. There are also more buttons on tvs, hidden which is retarded, but still. There were flatscreens that had no visible power button! But just like with lithium batteries and cables I am astonished how easily the majority just accepted "progress" that was worse! Sometimes older people are reminded by me how much more comfortable some "older stuff" was, and young people, well they are surprised that somethings changed for the worse. Why is that, wasn't it the case that customer unfriendly stuff didn't sell??? "there is nothing else, I have to buy this." NO YOU DONT.

A manual parking brake saved me from an accident when my master brake cylinder failed (not on a Ford. It's rare, but could happen on any make I imagine). I was able to pull on the handbrake, put both hands back on the steering wheel to avoid parked cars left and right until the handbrake kicked in and bit a few seconds later. Trying to hang on to a little rocker switch in that circumstance - I'm sure I would have crashed. And if the battery goes flat there is no way to disengage the electric parking brake. What a misguided development on so many new cars :(

I am quite sure it is just a switch.. it is 'up' or 'not up' (or, more specifically 'up', 'neutral/resting' or 'down' which is for releasing the parking brake). You cannot make it apply more force by pulling harder on it. That would be like thinking your bedroom light came on brighter or more quickly if you flipped the light switch with extra force.
(I found your channel by looking for demonstrations on the tech in my new-to-me 2016 Accord. I would love to see more in-depth how-to's and maybe explanations and demonstrations on correcting issues with all the technology in the latest generation of cars.)

I’m 36 and I drive a 2019 VW GTI. I’ve owned more manual transmission cars than I’d like to admit. Whenever I’m driving and I see a cop or a speed trap, it is old habit to reach for the E-brake, instead of the brake pedal. (This helps you slow down, without your brake lights illuminating, which is what they look for at night) I wouldn’t know what to do if I didn’t have this function.

You and most of the commenters here have NO IDEA what you/they are talking about... All an electronic parking brake is, is a motor on the back of your rear brake caliper that manually winds the caliper to a firm braking position. It works in case your hydraulics go out on the brakes. The motor is cheap and easy to replace should it ever go out..

It seems strange that drivers in some nations think a transmission brake is a substitute for a parking brake or hand brake. Wiser I think to use the parking brake daily, so it stands a chance of working if you do need it in an emergency.

As if the click-bait title wasn't enough, the only "disaster" in this video is a salesman abusing a brand new vehicle that was certainly sold as "new" to some unsuspecting customer who then gets denied warranty coverage when this fails because of "obvious abuse". He should've been fired immediately but I'm sure he's still working there. Pitiful.

The ABS computer is directly involved,, If you pull up on electrinc parking brake toggle , "plus" the system it senses the car in in motion it is going to take your action as an intension for emergency braking engagement , Unlike a normal cable parking brake , its going to apply full effort hydraulic braking to all 4 wheels but with one big diffrence "Abs is still active so it wont lock them even if you do this on a slippery surface like snow,, It will only do this as long as you hold the switch pulled up , it ceases when you release it.. How does it work,, when you engage the switch with the car in motion, The computer reads it as "driver intended emergency braking requested , it instanlty spins up the ABS pump to generate preasure and and using the valves inside the ABS unit, applys the maximum amount of presure it can get away with "without locking the wheels" just like a foot to the floor abs stop it applys brakes to all 4 brake calipers with the condition that it regulates the presure to avoid wheel lock up,, even if your driving in the snow , once the car acculy stops , it then applys the normal parking brake shoes to keep the car from rolling , I have been told it also uses the brake system presure sensors to detect if a major hydraulic brake failure has occured like a broken brake line , and in that case it will apply the mechanal parking brake as a fail safe.. that I have not confirmed,,

My 2016 Mazda 6 has this. Normally it will not activate above about 1/2 mph. I tried to use it as an emergency brake. It won't activate. Twice it had uncommanded applications. One at about 25 mph and once at about 20 mph. I was not touching the switch, it just went to full rear brakes and skidded to a stop. I have it back to dealers and they can't duplicate the issue or correct the problem. I'm concerned about an uncommanded application in a higher speed curve, like an off ramp. I hope that doesn't happen. My opinion is that parking/emergency brakes should be mechanical. I've tested that type many times and have always been able to make controlled stops.
